@Horehound I'm always moaning too 🤣 I hope things get easier for you soon. Stay strong 👐 and enjoy that gin. I still haven't had a drink. Looking forward to a Bacardi and coke.

@Megan2018 sounds good re your nursery choice. It's a big step isn't it. Nate just completed his daycare orientation today and will be there three full days per week as of next week when I go back to work 😱 his is a lovely centre too. Is pretty much new, has a great sleep area and the workers are lovely. I hope he hasn't come home with another cold this week or that will completely break me! We pay $120 per day, which equates to about $60, but you get good government rebates here so will only see us out of pocket approximately $30 (£15) per day. This of course depends upon income.

Geegrl19 · 31/01/2020 03:53

I'm melting. Is a delightful 40 degrees outside and Nate is alseep on me 🥵. Silly me didn't put on the aircon before I sat down. Waiting for a cool change to come through. Is rather cloudy so think we might be in for a thunderstorm which I love - as long as it happens after I've picked up the girls. They are both at high school now, where did the years go!

happydays00 · 31/01/2020 07:16

@Horehound I find the first 9 months or so is just ever changing: what worked last week, might not work next week and what didn't work last week might work next etc. They are so small and we can only guess at what they're really trying to tell us. Will he nap in the pram at all? I can get DS down in his cot for a morning nap but much trickier in the afternoon (at the moment) so I just rock the pram now and usually he dozes off.

@Geegrl19 40 degrees is just so hot!! I would have completely melted. How are you feeling about going back to work? My DS has started at Nursery one day a week as I have my first contract starting in March and want him to be settled when I start there and he goes up to 3 days in April. My DD is there already and is loving having her baby brother there with her!

Our nursery is £56 a day, this is middle of the road where we are but price bore no influence on my decision (although I was a bit 😒 at the £73 per day one!)

Stroan · 31/01/2020 07:39

Moan away @horehound that's what we are here for. @happydays00 is so right about things changing, they like to keep us on our toes.

I'm off until August. DS turns 1, DD starts school and I go back to work in the same week. I will need all the gin that week! DS has a place at DDs nursery and she'll be in their out of school care setting too. I've met a few mums who have the exact same set up so will be nice that the babies are all together.

I've had a breakthrough with night wakings. I realised that I was just feeding him every time he stirred and he was having tiny feeds then going back to sleep - about 8 times a night. I've started offering the dummy and putting my hand on his chest instead and he settles most times. Last night he slept 10-3, then 3.30 to 6.30. I'll take that!

Geegrl19 · 31/01/2020 09:33

@happydays00 yes was pretty shocking. Was 42 by the time I went to get the girls. Was rather a lot of boob sweat going on 🤣🤣

Yay for the sleep breakthrough @Stroan. Long may it continue

Horehound · 31/01/2020 10:40

Oh I've not even thought about nursery bookings yet! We have our eye on a private one but the only thing is it's in addition to our commute so we are now thinking of moving back to my hometown where we both work.
Shame cause we love the house we bought but really, it's not sensible commuting into work every day and where all our friends and family are!

On a lighter note, Arthur is absolutely desperate to get our cups of tea! Probably doesn't help that they have cartoons of chickens and hen houses on them and are all colourful but he's sooo interested I feel bad saying he can't have them! I'm gonna try getting him onto cups soon and basically miss out bottles. He's pretty switched on so I'm hopeful :)

Horehound · 31/01/2020 10:42

@Stroan oh that's good re. Wakenings. Lucky you!
Arthur used to take a dummy but at 4 month regression wasn't interested. Maybe i should try again!

Megan2018 · 31/01/2020 10:44

@Horehound check the wait list situation with local nurseries just in case. I enquired when still pregnant and was told 9 months before I need it is fine here as not over subscribed. But some areas they need booking in a year or more in advance.

I didn’t wait any longer with ours partly because one local nursery recently got slated by Ofsted and there are also lots of new houses going up so was worried we might miss out due to additional demand!

Stroan · 31/01/2020 10:49

@horehound you could give him a doidy cup or sippy cup to play with while you are having tea?

How is everyone feeling about weaning? We started DD on purees at 23 weeks as she wasn't gaining weight on milk. DS is showing no signs of being interested at all at 24 weeks, but the HV warned that I might miss the "opportunity to chew". I think we might convert the high chair and start giving him some steamed veg while we have dinner. Definitely in no hurry to be doing three meals, it's so much work!

I go to one baby group where all the other babies were on solids by 18 weeks, I felt judged for NOT weaning!

Stroan · 31/01/2020 10:51

@horehound he doesn't keep the dummy in for more than 30 seconds! Other than that, he has it in the car occasionally but really isn't bothered. I'm tempted to get rid but worried about the night wakings!

db92 · 31/01/2020 10:58

@stroan following our GP appointment on Tuesday, we tried E with a bit of baby rice last night. He point blank refused to put the spoon in his mouth whilst I had hold of it but was more than happy to do it himself and seemed to 'chew' and swallow it okay. I know baby rice has no nutritional value at all but because of his CMPA he can't have the baby porridge's. From next week I think I'm going to give him some puréed veggies from next week. But like you it'll just be a bit and not the hassle of three meals a day just yet.

I'm hoping having abit of so kind in his tummy will lessen the sick

Horehound · 31/01/2020 11:02

Ah ok @megan2018 I know which one I want as a backup but I definitely need to check waiting lists! I'm hoping it's not too bad. Don't think NE Scotland will be same as cities or England but I could be wrong!

@stroan yep I have the cup which the NHS give you with the red top that doesn't have a valve and I also bought one of those 360cups which I think I'll try first because if he masters that then we have no need for sippy cups that I then need to teach him to use a cup from.
I'll prob give both a go.

Re. Weaning we were talking about trying some porridge with Arthur soon and then move onto boiled carrots etc. I actually wondered if he was eating more proper food maybe he wouldn't wake up so much.

Horehound · 31/01/2020 11:04

@db92 I kind if of feel like the baby rice and porridge is less about nutritional value and more about getting them used to a thicker texture. Going from a smooth milk to something of substance must be so weird! So makes sense to start with that

Stroan · 31/01/2020 11:06

The 360 cups are brilliant, DD still has hers in bed at night because it doesn't leak.

Megan2018 · 31/01/2020 11:16

We are doing BLW, started buying a few things in prep inc a couple of recipe book (ebay 99p jobs) but won’t be starting until we are past the 6 month mark. I can’t be arsed with purees or baby specific porridge etc. We are going to put her straight onto what we eat. Obviously sticks of veg then fruit first but on to small tastes of our meals after that. Only 7 weeks or so to go!

Stroan · 31/01/2020 11:34

Will also be doing mostly BLW but with the addition of some foods that we don't eat much, like creamy sauces. DH is fussy and I want DS to be exposed to a much wider range of foods than we normally eat.

Not that it makes much difference, did the same with DD - she ate everything until she had her MMR. Didn't eat for 9 weeks and is now really fussy. Can't get her to even try totally normal food like cheese sauce, but she'll demolish a curry or sushi...

Megan2018 · 31/01/2020 11:35

Oh and I have these cups-unbelievably cute!!
www.babycup.co.uk/

Also have the cheap Tommee Tippee free flow for out and about etc until she has cracked the open ones www.aldi.co.uk/tommee-tippee-my-first-cup/p/700840322101200

Horehound · 31/01/2020 11:43

Heh they are cute @megan2018

The tommee tippee ones look similar to the NHS one. Dentist recommended apparently.
Just tried him with it and he did really well. I mean the milk went all over him he was spitting it out but loved playing with the cup. He knows to hold the two handles and the spout goes in his mouth :)

Horehound · 31/01/2020 11:45

@stroan what age did you start your dd with the 360 cup?

We will also do blw around 6 months first but I want him to get used to a different feel of texture. Just a small spoonful here and there every so often

Stroan · 31/01/2020 12:08

@horehound probably about 1? They were quite new then

To be fair, all my weaning plans are just plans. You never know how your baby will take to it. I'm not averse to spoon feeding if it persuades then to taste something new.

Horehound · 31/01/2020 12:24

Yeh exactly @stroan best laid plans..hehe

Managed to get Arthur down pretty quickly. I waited three hours this time rather than two and he dropped off in me fast. I always sing "frere jacques" religiously at any sleep time and I joke about it to my husband that I'm conditioning him hehe but maybe it will!
The other thing we've tried today is using the blankets underneath him as a quite of padding. We used one in the next2me when we were away in the hotel and he slept fine so I think the blankets feel and smell familiar rather than a cold hard bed.
The only thing I'm concerned is that the blankets are quite soft and so maybe not hard enough for his back.

KnobJockey · 31/01/2020 12:33

We haven't started weaning yet, but have offered sticks of carrot to help teething, and slices of cucumber while out for dinner. The carrot was much more popular! Not planning on weaning yet, but also not fussed about starting earlier than 6 months if we fancy- there's apparently evidence about nowadays that 5 months may be the optimum time to reduce allergies, and we have multiple sufferers of coeliac disease in our family. Don't ask me to supply it though, it's just something I read! Quite happy to mix between spoon and blw, and offer her everything we're having. And if this sleep regression keeps up, I will definitely be trying sooner than planned in the hope of getting some sleep!

KnobJockey · 31/01/2020 12:34

18 weeks here by the way, so earlier than lots of you, but with a baby I think is about 20lb, so lots of her to keep full!

happydays00 · 31/01/2020 13:34

DS is 5.5months now and I've offered a bit of veg this week but he has no interest whatsoever and I also have zero enthusiasm or energy for weaning. Sorry, I know that's awful but I just find it so time consuming and messy 😩 Obviously will get it together soon but putting it off properly until 6 months!

Megan2018 · 31/01/2020 13:42

@happydays00
That’s exactly how I feel-it’s a massive PITA tbh, I have trouble fitting everything in during the day as it is. Adding in bloody meal times is not something I want to hurry along. I’m not even offering anything until 15 March. Unless she actively grabs something earlier we’ll be leaving it until clear of 6 month date.

Mind you my friend’s baby grabbed a finger of Twix out of her hand just before 6 months and shoved it in her mouth before anyone could stop her GrinGrinGrin so she self declared weaning had started! So I might be forced in to earlier action.
