@whatalearningcurve @beherenowx32 she’ll be weighed on Monday but we can clearly see and feel she’s putting weight on. She seems to be more than happy to sleep! I’ve got a list of questions for the midwife/HV/Breastfeeding lady!

@sheeni my Mum has been right about most things Hmmand even my Nan has although some of her advice is ridiculously outdated. I suppose the point is we get so much advice from everyone from google to health professionals and not all of it will work for every baby. As they say the baby hasn’t read the books. You’re the Mommy at the end of the day. But yes ‘helpful’ suggestions can be very irksome. My DH was trying to give me advice the other morning and it just came across as criticism and bossy. You also don’t need anyone being smug! FlowersFlowers

KarBB · 05/04/2019 09:32

@BeHereNowx32 My mum is the same - driving me & DH barmy! Now I know why me & my siblings have zero tolerance for cold weather...

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 05/04/2019 09:49

Morning ladies. G's cord has come off but underneath seems to be a bit gunky. Just wondering if it's normal or if it's a bit infected?

Sorry for the gross photo- the dry crusty bits around the belly button is just his over cooked skin. 😊 not sure if I need to ring triage to get it looked at or not.

cardboard33 · 05/04/2019 10:00

My mum is also currently here and also thinks we have him too cold. I went upstairs yesterday and she had him in two blankets and his sleeping bag, and his clothes whereas we would normally go for clothes and then one of the others. Tbf I do think he must get cold sometimes as I'm always cold in our house but we've been following the guidelines for if its between X and Y temp then do Z, so I don't know if she has a point or not.

@jenlou1992 hopefully you're currently sleeping!! Yet again he was fussing a lot until 4/5 and then settled better. Glad the infacol has been working for you... As others have said it honestly does get easier. Our baby has been sleeping for extended periods this week in his next to me crib whereas originally he wouldn't sleep anywhere that wasn't on us and then progressed to the chair rocker thing as he can stay all snuggled up in there. Likewise on the screaming front, apparently it gets worse before it gets better... A lot of the stuff we've read says around week 6 is the peak of the crying, and you'll probs find in week two it gets worse simply because she's worked out how to do it. Not saying that to frighten you, more just so if/when it happens you'll know it's baby being baby rather than you.

(Disclaimer: I'm no expert/only have an almost 5 week old baby that I'm basing these opinions on so could be completely wrong...)

Hermagsjesty · 05/04/2019 10:00

@assumeitwasclever hmm, I think that’s probably normal unless there’s an off smell or anything? Maybe just gently wipe with cotton wool and cooled, boiled water and see if that clears it and if the gunk reappears and you’re concerned call triage?

I agree - they definitely used to keep babies much warmer! My mum is constantly pulling up blankets I’ve just pulled down and whenever I sent the bigger kids over as toddlers they always seemed to come back with extra cardies and jumpers! I try my best to just small, nod and then proceed to ignore the advice I don’t agree with.

Hermagsjesty · 05/04/2019 10:01

smile and nod

cardboard33 · 05/04/2019 10:02

@assumeitwassomethingclever ours also looked a bit like that when it fell off and also had bits of blood around where it has been hanging on. When is your next appointment? They check it then if you say that it has fallen off (maybe they even ask, can't remember!)

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 05/04/2019 10:05

@Hermagsjesty it doesn't smell but does leave little yellow marks on his vests.

@cardboard33 our next appointment is on Sunday. I was going to wait til then to mention it but didn't want to if it's obviously infected!

Thank you both! This FTM thing is a minefield. 😂

Wineandchoccy · 05/04/2019 10:13

@AssumeItWasSomethingClever it looks like dd’s when hers came off and the midwife said it was normal it cleared up very quickly.

Both my daughters have always slept better when kept warmer than they suggest now.

WhatALearningCurve · 05/04/2019 10:34

@AssumeItWasSomethingClever I'd say totally normal. Ours looked like this when it came off and my best friend is a doctor so I sent her a photo. She said as long as it's not read and inflamed around it then it's all good. Just wash gently with sterile water (boiled and cooled) and then when you start to bath them then it'll get clearer and clearer. Ours fell off 2 weeks ago and now basically looks like an actual belly button

WhatALearningCurve · 05/04/2019 10:35

Also - that is the most unflattering photo of my child 😂😂

SquirtlesMumAgain · 05/04/2019 13:12

I do think the one more layer than you thing is very subjective when it comes to keeping them warm. My clothes are a lot thicker than hers, so she often has a couple of blankets on overnight and her cotton swaddle (plus sleep suit & vest) where I am in pjs, duvet and blanket.

Sheeni · 05/04/2019 14:29

That's exactly what it is! She constantly wants to overdress him. But I kind of get it. We're keeping the house at 19-20°C and I can't say it's really warm - it's an old drafty house. He's wearing what the books/guidelines etc. say, but I wouldn't be terribly surprised if he's not warm enough normally.
What got me was when she suggested breaking the suction on breast by holding his nose, because that's what they used to do. That one was a definite no-no for me.

KarBB · 05/04/2019 15:20

@Sheeni Confused That's amazing!

Gronk27 · 05/04/2019 17:18

@sheeni oh no that doesn’t sound very nice!

BeHereNowx32 · 05/04/2019 17:29

@Sheeni that’s scary advice! People have lots of interesting things to say!!

Babies are better being a little cooler, I’ve heard. It’s actuslly more dangerous for them to be hot. But I think we can judge it best ourselves xx

ballanj · 05/04/2019 19:26

@Jenlou1992 hope you got a better night last night.

And it's as if my little Charlie could sense me dishing out advice and chose to not settle as well as usual last night! I say last night, he was inconsolable from around 5:30am until gone 2pm today. Felt utterly useless and at the end of my tether. Took him for a walk, bathed him (NOT well received at that point!) changed, fed, you name it. He eventually had a couple of lengthy naps and I managed to grab two hours with him. Had some dinner and now in the bath while DP has time with him downstairs.

I think we need to remember it's still very early days. Everyone tells me it does get easier and I'm clinging onto that as I'm sat with him crying thinking I'm doing a crap job!

ballanj · 05/04/2019 19:32

Post partum question guys. When did everyone's lochia/bleeding eventually stop? Mine seems to have now turned to an off yellow/browny colour (more like heavy discharge) and I'm 3 weeks PP now. Just wondered how much longer I can expect it to last. When it lightened up I switched to my normal pantyliners but they have a slight scent which I think irritated everything down there. So back on my Natracare maternity pads. Just worried the colour meant an infection as I kept feeling a dull ache around my urethra but that seems to have eased off now. I think everything is slowly adjusting but some days feel a bit more delicate 'down there' than others

MistakenHoliday · 05/04/2019 19:41

Mines still going at three weeks PP @ballanj but is a bit variable. I'm only using panty liners and some days are heavier than others. Still bright red though and I've been idly wondering if I need to worry about that. No weird smell or anything so I'm guessing not.

Can't remember how long it went on for last time but I have PP blood loss so think a lot of it might have gone then (not very scientific!)

Hermagsjesty · 05/04/2019 19:59

Mine has stopped in the last couple of days - I’m 4.5wks post partum but I think anything up to 6wks is normal

KarBB · 05/04/2019 20:34

@ballanj Mine sounds very similar to yours- browny yellow, only a tiny bit of red & quite light (liner, not thick pad) - I'm 4.5 weeks PP. midwife said it's fine & also checked my stitches & said no sign of infection so I think all normal.

BadBadBeans · 05/04/2019 20:39

I need to properly reply and catch up with this thread but have been struggling with lack of sleep the last couple of days - and I haven't got it half as bad as some of you! Sleep deprivation is hard.

Just wanted to say that to take baby off the breast I have always inserted my little finger into the corner of their mouth, but have often found it very difficult to get my finger in there, meaning I end up with several painful seconds before I manage to free my nipple. But i learned the BEST thing at a baby cafe this week - suck your finger first and it will just slide into the corner of their mouth. Game changer.

SoBoredOfWaiting · 05/04/2019 21:56

Hi all!
Just catching up again - baby boy is now 3.5 weeks old and the evenings are seriously getting me down. His latch is perfect when bf but every night from 7-12 he cluster feeds, cries and fusses with only a few minutes sleep in between. Anyone else struggling with this?!

@ballanj mine is just a tiny amount now and using panty liners only. I had a few grazes but no stitches however still feel a little tender on days where I have been quite active.

@Sheeni I have also had the mother and in-laws dishing advice, I am getting to the stage now where I just take it all under consideration 😊

@Gronk27 not using a pur flo but using a poddle pod overnight- I know, it is not recommended. Baby boy was so little when born (5lb 12oz) and he would not settle at all in his cot. I had three hellish nights before trying the pod. He sleeps 3 hours at a time in it and loves it so I am going to use it for a while longer until he is a bit bigger!

Hope everyone else is doing ok!

Gronk27 · 06/04/2019 00:01

@soboredofwaiting LO loves the Pur Flo I just worry she’s not getting the benefit of a firm mattress because I can’t work out if it’s lifting her up a bit in places-a but like a hammock but not as much!

NotDoingThat · 06/04/2019 00:10

I'm 6w postnatal and still have some light (but heavier than before she was born) yellowy discharge, which still gets a heavier/ a bit red when I over exert - but then again I was a c-section.
