ooh a veg debate, hang on a sec

LadyTophamHatt · 03/07/2007 14:37

parsnips are a fav too, have to be roasted though.

and roasted sweet potato.

mmmmm yum!

MrsCarrot · 03/07/2007 14:46

Well, I don't like peas! I will eat them if they are in something and I can't pick them out, they just make me think of corn beef hash and egg fried rice, egg, chips and peas, staple food of my childhood. Bleurgh...

Mine eat what I give them except for mushrooms, and courgettes (make them eat one slice though)
and ds1 doesn't like banana and dd doesn't like kiwi. They love most veg, even (ponce alert) quinoi with herbs, beetroot and carrot coleslaws and the dreaded brussels, well, they eat one or two. If they don't like something I make them try a little of it every now and then and sometimes their tastes change. Not always. I appreciate some children won't eat stuff even if parents do, I didn't mean to suggest blame yesterday, it just often tallies.

I agree it's expensive though. I spend most of my money on food I have to say. I think large pots of yoghurt are definitely better on a budget, they're often on offer too and you can buy plain and mix with fruit puree, honey when they're older etc. I think a lot of vegi box schemes let you choose what you want now don't they?

I aim for ten portions of fruit/veg a day so it adds up but I expect I am in the minority there? God, am I rabbiting.. will stop now

We have just had a horrendous thunderstorm, my conservatory is flooding again, towels everywhere

Dragonhart · 03/07/2007 15:02

Mmmmm! Brussel Sprouts. Seriously, I cant think of one fruit or veg.

MrsGolf- Have to say, Luke would eat bread til the cows came home so perhaps that is why!

MrsGolfPro · 03/07/2007 15:40

MrsC - isn't it funny that you don't like peas out of all the veg out there...I LOVE peas, esp mixed with sweetcorn. Can't stand minted peas though bleurgh!!!!!!!

Well, my DS has just had a healthy healthy lunch of.........two yoghurts and a Heinz biscotti . Would he eat the deicious parsnip and sweet potato puree and banana and pear puree?? Would he bollocks. They went down like a sh*t sandwich. [bad mother emoticon]

Oh well, he is usually an excellent eater so I won't stress. His fave meal at the moment is Butternut Squash mixed with Pear. Weird child.

Not long till I can introduce wheat and meat properly into his diet. Am gonna start with Annabel Karmel's one pot chicken recipe which sounds lovely.

RGee · 03/07/2007 16:04

Right, no time to read through at the mo, but I LOVE sprouts. And carrots and parsnips. And all fruit. Nom nom.

Just got back from Derby from visiting my bf who had a daughter yesterday. I cried!! She was sooo tiny and gorgeous.

It's all go as I've just spent the last two days in London. Good old DH has been looking after the lo. Won't mention that our electricity was off all Sunday so he couldn't play on his XBox, playstation, watch the cricket on tv, or surf the net. So he had to play with lo all day!

Back later. Must go and give toothy lots of missed cuddles.

theUrbanDryad · 03/07/2007 16:46

i don't like peas either MrsC!! bleargh. tis about the only thing i won't eat though.

well we've just had a guy come and look at our leaky ceiling, he thinks we need a new bath, shower, toilet, cistern, tiling, redecorate whole bathroom, then downstairs new floorboards, plastering etc. i very much doubt whether the landlord will authorise it though. knob.

btw - what the hell is quinoa? i've come across it loads on MN but i don't have a clue what it is!

smallone · 03/07/2007 17:43

Grr! Wrote a really long post and then comp lost connection and lost it! Back to catching up AGAIN!

MrsCarrot · 03/07/2007 17:50

Quinoi is a grain a bit like cous cous but has all the amino acids and loads of vitamins. Hang on...

"Quinoa is famous for its amino acid content as it contains all the amino acids needed for humans to build protein. Most grains lack at least one or two of these amino acids. Quinoa also contains useful amounts of manganese, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron and phosphorous as well as B vitamins and small amounts of the essential fats. The fibre in quinoa makes it useful for cleansing the intestines and preventing cardiovascular disease."

You can have it whole grain for salads like tabbouleh or flaked for porridge. I have some quinoi bread at the moment but it's a bit odd.

JodieG1 · 03/07/2007 17:50

Tip for you, if you lose all yuor text hold control and Z and you get it all back

UD - sounds like a right pita for you

MrsCarrot · 03/07/2007 17:52

how on earth did that double post around you, Jodie?

vinorouge · 03/07/2007 18:04

I like brussels too and get excited when I see them in the shoips for the first time in the autumn. I usually cook a raost dinner in their honour!!

DH is off work this week too so we are enjoying some family time, off to Southport tomorrow to see DH auntie and for Ellen to put her little tootsies on the sand for the first time. I'm excited about that too!

E&H - sounds like you were in your element tidying at work yesterday.

MGP - let me know how one pot chicken goes down with J. My mum loves Mackays - I got Ellen a lovely cardi there in a previous sale.

I keep thinking of trying a vegibox scheme but never get round to it, bit like internet shopping. Never done that yet either

smallone · 03/07/2007 18:14

Jodie - about infestation! I had nits loads as a child, was far too sociable for my own good! and I have really thick hair so they were very cosy in there!

LTH- Hope your boys are feeling better, and you've got some rest yourself.

MrsC - You'll be pleased to hear that carrot batons are the food of choice for dd!

UD/Jodie - Glad its Nestle Boycott week, I find it really hard to avoid everything, have always been a cadbury and kellogg girl tho! Are the rumours true that Nestle are going to buy Lansinoh?

PCT - well done at getting max into his own room, am I the only one left with lo still in with us? (laziness on my part, will have to give up dining room)

DH - re fruit on a budget, I think greengrocers are cheaper than supermarkets and try to buy whats local and in season. (easy for me as I live in Herefordshire - the fruit capital!)

I love fruit and veg, prob a good job coz I'm veggie! Don't think there's any I don't like, not so fussed on broad beans but I will eat them. And I am fussy about getting all of the pith off oranges so tend not to bother - tinned on the otherhand is another matter.

smallone · 03/07/2007 18:18

Jodie - ta for top text tip!

JodieG1 · 03/07/2007 18:20

MrsC - how odd?!

Vino - have a great week with dh home Mine is off to Italy next wed with work and back on Friday, the 13th

Smallone - My dd has quite fine hair but ds1's is really thick, luckily his isn't too long. We still co-sleep with Ethan
and no plans on moving him for a while yet. He feeds far too much at night anyway and I don't want to be up and down to another
room, plus I like having him nearby I'm a veggie too

vinorouge · 03/07/2007 18:31

Carrot batons are next for Ellen too, prob tomorrow. She had melon today and was happy to suck a piece of it but not keen on it pureed. I ate it instead!

eandh · 03/07/2007 18:56

Ellie likes most veg we give her, broccolli, carrots, courgettes, peas, sweetcorn, sweede, red cabbage, white cabbage, greens, leeks etc although its the last 8 months that she'll actually try new things always used to be carrots, sweede and broccoli all the time and Mrs GP I love peas and sweetcorn mixed together mmmm yummy

Hattie had 1st taste of meat today as did some chicken breasts, she had chicken, mash potato, sweede and carrots and ate the lot (it was a big portion!!) have got some weetabix to try for breakfast later in the week.

Had a manic afternoon I volunteered to look after 4 under 3 year olds on my own!! Actually they were all really good and they stayed for tea so am no thinking maybe I could do childminding as it was easier with 4 than 2

My new sofas are arriving tomorrow yipee!!

UD Love the weaning pics v.independent little man

Jodie - hope treatment works

MrsC - Thankyou for explaining quinoa alays wondered what it was

RGEE glad you had a safe journey and had a slight smirk on my face thinking of your dh without tv/xbox etc

Ummmm I know smallone/loopy/lth etc have posted but cant remember what so sorry for anything I have missed

Dragonhart · 03/07/2007 21:33

DH has a big interview tomorrow so keep all your fingers crossed for us! He has to go for the whole day and get 2 interviews, personality tests do talks and all sorts! Sounds very scary to me!

Dragonhart · 03/07/2007 21:37

Smallone- think that is the key: buy in season. Trouble is dont suppose that will make much difference to bananas!

Vinorouge, Southport is quite near me. The beach there is really great and very long!

How exciting about the sofa EAH. I love having things delivered.

MrsGolfPro · 03/07/2007 21:44

Buggy arrived - very nice. Very lightweight. Perfectly fine for hols etc. Good choice RGee. Where are you RGee???

Good luck Mr Dragonhart. Fingers crossed.

Shimmer · 03/07/2007 21:44

Evening all. Ummmm LOVE sprouts! And pretty much all fruit and veg really. 'Specially bananas & peas!!
So i'm hoping to pass this love of fruit and veg on to Freddie, whilst trying to avoid passing on my love of cakes and biscuits!

So far he's doing really well and is a brilliant eater. He's scoffed down everything I've made so far with no problems at all! He actually gets so excited when he eats that he sort of grins and pants! DP has remarked more than once that it's a bit like having a litle puppy! I gave him frozen veg today for the first time, as I'm on a tight shopping budget now too, now that my maternity pay has stopped.

The real mystery about that quinoi stuff is how you prononce it. Someone mentioned it the other day (i think saying how poncy it was!) and i actually didn't know what they were talking about at first cos they pronounced it so oddly!

Saw mumsnet on the news tonight. The debate about whether they should be showing the message about Madeleine McCann in the cinemas before Shrek. Interesting.

LadyTophamHatt · 03/07/2007 21:46

Buggy, Mrs G?

what buggy.

tell me .

tell me now!

(bt I have just eaten a big plate of bubble and squeek...alll this talk of veg reminded me of the left overs in the fridge. Was yum, even though I'm now going to be farting alllll night)

vinorouge · 03/07/2007 21:47

Shimmer I asked my friend what on earth she was talking about when she mentioned having made a casserole with 'keenwah' in it - when I saw the box I said oh you mean quinoa and I was told off for mispronouncing it. Never eaten it.

Good news about the buggy MGP. I was tempted too! DH has commented how I am on a spendng spree at the mo though....

Ordered some nametags ready for nursery stuff - tenner for 75 iron on and 75 stick on was quite good I thought - mynametags.com.

vinorouge · 03/07/2007 21:48

lth there is a link on a post below from rgee to the buggy rgee and MGP ahve bought. It was a BARGAIN!!!!
