A new thread for us all

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
weirdbird · 14/07/2007 22:07

Aggghhhh

I am so fed up of being thrown up on!

3 times today!"!, am feeling really ill, and Hannah threw up all over our bed, so I have had to get up, really wish I could work out why its suddenly gotten so bad again.

Am running a temp, want to cough constantly and I was meant to be at a MN meet up today that I had been looking forward to and we couldn't go cause I was too ill

Darren has this week off work so we can spend some time together before DD1 is off school for the summer and it looks like hes gonna spend half of it looking after me

(Thanks for listening if you got through that, I just needed to get it out, I will now go and change all our bedding....)

Elibean · 14/07/2007 22:16

Aah, WB, sorry you're ill . And being thrown up on. dd2 got me, herself in clean PJs, and the sofa tonight...but its getting rarer, in large quantities, for which I'm very grateful. Hope same for you soon, and feel better. xx

Thanks for all the wean support, will try broccoli and try to reign in impatience too. Purees getting rejected after two mouthfulls most of the time, so will persist with finger foods and hope dd drinks enough milk to keep her weight up...she's dropped recently, and got longer at the same time, so is beginning to look rather skinny (apart from her sumo thighs, bless her).

I think us reflux-mums should have some sort of perk on the NHS, on the grounds of mental health: laundrette tokens at least, a cruise in the sun at best??

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 15/07/2007 00:31

How about Funky Glass Slipper?

dd2 had a crumpet today, I don't actualy know if she digested any of it. she did give it a good old chew though.

I bought an steamer adapter for my pots, so I will be steaming some veg for her tomorrow. I bought some green beans and she can have some carrot (She's chewed on a raw one before) and cauli as well

jabberwocky · 15/07/2007 02:21

ds2 is not too fond of carrots Our beans are coming in so am going to do some tomorrow and see how that goes. His first bit of green food, lol.

babypowder · 16/07/2007 13:05

DD2 loves feeding herself asparagus and broccoli. I just made some butternut squash risotto for her (as we're having butternut squash pasta tonight and I roasted the squash this morning), intending to feed her some at lunch and freeze the rest. She loved it, had 2 helpings, and then I scoffed the rest

castlesintheair · 16/07/2007 13:32

Me too, fed up of all the vomit Paranoid that the place stinks of it too! I can't understand why DD2's is getting worse either WeirdBird.

I made butternut squash pastina for DD2. She loves it too, though it comes up later, like everything else.

DD2's head asymmetry is nearly 'normal' (only 2 mm to go). Pretty amazing stuff in 3.5 weeks.

accessorizewithbabysick · 16/07/2007 16:12

WB, feeling any better?
The whole sick thing sounds awful, the rivers of it seem to have stopped here at last, still never as bad as castles and wb.
Bnut squash risotto one of my fav recipes, anything I'd have to miss out for ds2 (I use lo-salt stock anyway)?
Castles, sounds like the helmet is all worth it, tha's grand!

weirdbird · 16/07/2007 18:22

Sadly we are still the plague house, I finally started feeling a bit better yesterday evening, but both Hannah and DD1 started the high temp Sat evening and where both really ill all day Sunday and we were having cold baths in the middle of the night to try and bring there temps down as they where both burning up, was all a bit scary tbh

They both seem to be on the mend today, though both are quite clingy and tearful over not much, am just waiting for DH to come down with it now!

Really hope DD1 is ok for school tomorrow as its her School Choir Concert that she is in and she has her Rainbow Rumpus in the evening that she has been looking forward too for weeks! (These are her only 2 extra curricular activities that I have managed to keep up with since Hannah was born so to miss the last one of the term for both would be unfortunate!)

OP posts:
weirdbird · 16/07/2007 18:25

ok, what do you do with butternut squash to put it into the risotto?

I make Risotto on a regular basis, and can highly recommend chicken and mango!

Castles - Amazing difference in a really short time!

Definitely like Funky Glass Slipper for a new name! FGS never fails to make me

OP posts:
Elibean · 16/07/2007 19:35

WB, sorry you're going through the Bug Zone...we're free of colds for the first time in, well, however long it is since dd2 arrived. Nearly 8 months, I suppose

Castles, wow, thats good news re helmet - so fast! Does that mean she can stop sooner?

Took dd2 to the HV today, as I could feel her weight dropping - or at least, not increasing - though she's got much longer. HV was concerned, and she's being referred to the Speech & Language specialist, who apparently also deals with swallowing/food issues. Just in case the Laryngomalacia has anything to do with it. And the lovely Nursery Nurse is coming to observe, give feedback etc tomorrow lunchtime.

In the meantime, they said to throw nutritional thoughts out and give her anything from sweet biscuits to fromage frais as long as it has calories and is soft enough for her throat. They also suggested using a Biscotti as a spoon, for dipping into sticky or milky stuff. So we got home, put some banana, some rice pudding (Rachel's ), some chocolate Heinz Biscotti, and some stewed apple on her tray and watched her stuff her face...her hair...her ears...

Well, stuff by her standards.

I can't tell you how much happier I felt, and she started trying to crawl half an hour later - then drank more milk than she's ever had in one go. AND NOT ONE DROP OF VOMIT!!!

Sorry for shouting, I'm just so relieved

And you never know, we may not be woken up four times in the night tonight

Elibean · 16/07/2007 19:36

Love butternut risotto...local Strada cafe used to do it. Sadly no longer. Recipe, anyone?

accessorizewithbabysick · 16/07/2007 20:11

Ahh, that's great Eli, must have been a relief for you. I love it when you see a health professional and they just turn things around!
WB, weekend sounds horrible for you, hope things on the mend soon {{}}
I make Annabel Karmel's butternet squash risotto. I cut up squash into cubes, then steam it for 5 mins or so. Do the risotto as normal, then add the squash 10 mins before the end along with about 8 torn large sage leaves which add a lovely flavour - you could remove them at the end.
Went to see HP last night, v.v.good, thoroughly enjoyed myself. Can't wait for the new book to come out!
DS1 has a fever today, poor lamb has spent much of the day in bed, luckily it rained all day anyway. So long since he's been ill (chicken pox at 1, he's 3.7) bit of a shock, I know how lucky I am - none of my siblings or I ever got sick much, clearly my kids have my genes!

FoeGlassSlipper · 16/07/2007 20:16

wb and castles - the sickness must be so hard.

castles - wow about the helmet!! My DDs head seems to have improved a bit by itself thankfully but it will likely always be a bit misshapen...

elibean - the food thing is great! My HV told me to add butter to any homemade purees I made to help add calories..well done baby bean!

wb - I love FGS too....will defo change to Funky next week..

DH away this week and I have managed to get both DD2 and DD1 to bed at 7.15 and 7.45 respectively which is a first!! (normally more like 8) I'm well chuffed but hope I dont regret it at 5am tomorrow

babypowder · 16/07/2007 20:58

Eli, that's fantastic news! And great news about the helmet, too castles!

I hate faffing about with butternut squah - the whole peeling/cutting into chunks thing just seems like too much work. I just wrap the whole thing in foil, stick it in the oven for an hour or so, then when it comes out it's lovely and soft, scoop out the seeds, scrape out the flesh, and I'm away!

Are you all using normal (ie salted) butter for your LOs? I am becoming obsessed with salt (I did actually make my own salt-free bread the other day), and I worry that I'm maybe going overboard.

accessorizewithbabysick · 16/07/2007 22:06

Good idea, bp, I'll do that next time, I hate peeling bnut squashes!

Elibean · 16/07/2007 22:30

Oooh, thanks for recipe AQ - and thanks for cheers, all. Am still very pleased, and have some wonderful photos of baby-bean covered in chocolatey mush for posterity

Butter excellent idea - I'd buy unsalted, 'cos I think it tastes nicer anyway (maybe the French bit of me).

I'm one for lobbing squash into oven too - but it came up beautifully in the Baby-Cook thing, for dd. And do love risotto.

WB and Castles, wishing you sick-free nights and days....

Elibean · 16/07/2007 22:31

AQ, meant to say, hope ds better soon - understand shock, I was totally shocked to have such an ill dd2 back in December, 'cos dd1 has never had more than a cold, really. Get well soon AWBS Junior-senior

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 16/07/2007 22:49

Good to hear your lo ate well today Elibean

Get well vibes for WB

I've had the b'nut squash in my cupboard for ages - should do something with it.

OonaghBhuna · 16/07/2007 22:57

Havent been on for ages.....I am a fan of butternut squash, I cook it in the oven. Its lovely with parmesan cheese grated through it though you couldnt do that for the babies....Also the seedsare lovely toasted in a little olive oil ( and salt ....) For the children I mash it and use unsalted butter.Dd2 who is 6 months is really not enjoying solid food at all, I am struggling. I keep trying every day but she just wants her bottles, cause she can hold them herslef. I gabe up breast feeding a few days ago aswell due to her love of the bottle

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 16/07/2007 23:13

OB - I know how you feel - all of a sudden b/f have reduced to 2 per day

To tell you the truth, I don't think dd2 is actually eating a lot of the food I give her. I am glad she is trying these new textures though.

BLW said to try to think that "food is for fun until they are one"

jabberwocky · 17/07/2007 03:55

castles - huge high five from across the pond

eli- also major congrats for being cold-free - you all have really been thru the mill with viruses. I'm so glad your dd2 has found something to her liking food-wise

wb - here's wishing good health all around in your house

AQ - have been thinking about sending you a CAT regarding the impaction business. Seems like we take one step forward and 2 steps back IYKWIM...

I so thought we would do blw but ds2 is such a good eater with homemade purees, even on his very strict allergic diet (err, and the millet ) that we have only done rice cakes so far in that regard. He's eating up a storm, tho, which is so much better than ds1 at this point that I'm just well pleased about the whole thing.

Big question for all - He's been rather hoarse the last 2 days. Seems to feel fine. I'm sure he's got to be teething a bit at this point, even tho I can't feel anything. I'm wondering about allergies as with the excema problem I am considering him to be an allergy-prone baby.

And, where's milkshake????? I miss you!!!!

Olihan · 17/07/2007 04:18

So much to catch up on as usual!

Castles & WB, sending 'sick free' vibes to you both!

Eli, glad the solids are starting to go better, the whole eating business is so stressful, isn't it?

AQ, hope your boys get better soon, ds2 had a strange high temp virusy thing a few days ago, but got over it pretty quickly. Chicken pox is apparentlydoing the rounds o the village at the mo, so I'm just waiting for that to strike.

Castles, great news about dd2's head.

BP, re the salt, I used to let ds1 and dd eat ordinary bread, etc but used unsalted butter and didn't add any extra to anything. Having said that, dd developed a taste for toast and marmite at about 7 months and is still addicted to it, ds2 seems to be going the same way - he steals my toast in the morning but if I give him a piece with jut butter he throws it on the floor in disgust .

Jabber, don't know about the jhoarsenessm my dcs are quite late teethers and their teeth always take me by surprise - my usual clue is the vile nappy rash inducing poos that they produce for a couple of days prior to a tooth popping through.

FGS, how's the biting?

Ds2 is in a real mess sleep wise at the moment. DH and I went to a ball on Sat night and the PILs babysat but ds2 decided he didn't want EBM from a bottle and was up from 10pm until we got in at 3am . He was quite happy and fed himself a little bit of milk at about 2am but since then he's been waking up for his 3/4am feed and staying awake for a couple of hours. (Hence the daft o'clock posting now.) Grr, surely it's time for him to start sleeping through?

I have a butternut squash in my fridge that i think I'm going to roast tomorrow and try him with it at dinner, thanks to all your inspiring stories. The jars are costing me a fortune and i need to get myself organised with some proper food for him.

Going to stop rambling now, I'm only killing time until his lordship decides it's time to go back to bed...............

Olihan · 17/07/2007 04:24

Margo, is dd2 having bottles too, or is she just not a big drinker? Like the 'food for fun' quote, will have to remember that next time ds2 is refusing to eat! Trouble is, my need for sleep is making me want to shovel as much food down his throat as possible, just in case it makes that vital difference and actually pushes him longer than 3 hours.

accessorizewithbabysick · 17/07/2007 10:57

Yes, glassy how is the biting, I didn't follow the other thread?
Oonagh, I think 6 mo still pretty early, it's only at 7.5 months that I can see that ds2 is getting more interested in solids, so I'm feeding him food first then milk after the last couple of days.
Jabber, don't think I'm set up for CAT, I'll look at it when I get home (we're still deciding when to set off, no doubt dp and I will have another major barney about it!). But that would be good, I'm feeling v.frustrated going back to nappies at 3.7! He's going thru that many pullups a day with little bits of poo, so just as bad as pants really. DS1 seems completely recovered, just a 24 virus then, no temp now. Tho he woke up in the night and smeared poo all over my dad's upstairs bathroom and the carpet. Urgh.
I've given up largely on blw, ds2 just wants to eat too much for it to be practical. And like Oli, I'll do anything for sleep!

Elibean · 17/07/2007 13:35

Ok, well, dd2 is definitely pro-BLW.
Or, more accurately, BLHFAWSWS: babyledhairfaceandworldsmearingwithsolids.

DH, who is slightly retentive when it comes to food mess (though not tidying clothes up, for some reason ) has to leave the room at times

Wheetabix soaked in milk, butternut squash, sweet potato, and rice cakes dipped in peach yoghurt. Why does it make me so happy to see her eating? I'm half French, half Jewish, suppose its in the genes

Oonagh, honestly, dd's only just started eating anything - and she's nearly 8 months. She's hated spoons since the start, and choked on anything at all till very recently - easy for me to say, but I wouldn't worry for a while yet, just keep offering.
