A new thread for us all

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
SachaF · 13/07/2007 12:04

Mmmm, chocolate summer selection box and pink champagne . Unfortunately I can only eat a couple a day as they have milk and egg in them but then the pleasure lasts longer!
Also following that allergy schedule, but as we are on a cruise next week I may try him on meat - not wasting any hunks of meat on him at home as I am sure they will end up on floor to start with! So no protein or iron in diet apart from Bmilk.
Dh has accepted a new job - we need to move! but we are away 3 weeks in next 7 weeks then he probably starts September - I think the campervan will be useful for a while (for dh, not me and ds!)

babypowder · 13/07/2007 12:58

Exciting news, Sacha! Are you having to move very far? I just don't know how you women do this kind of thing - I can barely cope with stayin in one place!

Enjoy the chocs and champagne (I take it your anniversary is today, then)

babypowder · 13/07/2007 12:58

We got married on my birthday at my DHs insistence - just so that I would never forget when it was!

jabberwocky · 13/07/2007 13:36

Happy Anniversary, Sacha! The choccies and champagne sounds sooo good.

Don't know how all of you are doing moves with babies either It's taken me/us all this time to finish remodeling

Oli, what a good memory you have! I am a Southern Belle by birth, but have never been very good at playing the part. I think I must have been British in another life as I have loved MN from the first day I found it over 3 years ago

There's a MNer moving very close to me next week and I am just in a dither of excitement about it, lol.

Oh, and ds2 was doing the exact same thing with sleeping about a week ago. I had wondered if it was teeth, but then dh took over with some cc and now he is doing much better. So, now I think I just spoil him by getting him up and bfing too much. It is just so hard for me to hear him cry and know that if I bf and snuggle he will go back to sleep. But in the longrun it's not good for either of us b/c neither gets enough quality sleep that way. Now the problem is when I can move out of the guest room and back in the bedroom with ds2 (and dh, )

I guess this is a good time to ask how many of you have moved your lo into their own room?

castlesintheair · 13/07/2007 14:24

Jabber, DD2 has been in her own room for ages. Since we discovered damp in our bedroom. Think she was about 9 weeks which coincided with her "sleeping through". Although that bit went all wrong at 4 months

Happy Anniversary Sacha.

Just getting a little sneak preview of the summer holidays here. DD1 (3) hasn't done much over the last couple of days as all her activities have ended and I'll just say it's been rather trying We went to DS's sports day this morning and she spent the whole time moaning & asking when we were going. Still, at least all the other younger siblings were doing the same. Roll on September. Only joking. I think!

jabberwocky · 13/07/2007 14:31

Can't remember if I mentioned that I decided to put ds1 into 5 day per week pre-school? I go to the parent's meeting on Tuesday (madatory, the head told me rather sternly when we put in the application ) then he starts on July 30th. I've been secretly holding my breath for him to start, then last night he crawled on my lap and said, "Mommy do you need me for anything or do you want to be alone?" Just ripped my heart right out, I tell you. so I decided to start our first night of chapter book reading with Harry Potter - first book. He was quite attentive for about half the chapter then fell asleep. Now, I'm starting to fret that this is the end of just having days with him to do what we want

jabberwocky · 13/07/2007 14:32

castles, am thinking he really should go in his own room. Ds1 was in by 6 months.

has she adjusted to the helmet finally?

castlesintheair · 13/07/2007 14:41

Yes, DD2 is really happy in her helmet now Jabber. Have a check-up on monday to find out the improvment. It's exciting - like going to weight-watchers. Not that I've been to anything like that. I should but I haven't!

IKWYM - once they start proper school or pre-school everything is so structured. I miss the lazy hazy days of being to do exactly what we like all the time. Now I really look forward to the holidays. Or at least I was ...

SachaF · 13/07/2007 16:03

Thanks
ds went in his room at 10 weeks - he had a habit of yelping in his sleep and waking me up hourly, this extended to 2 hourly when I couldn't hear him so well!
Ds has just done his first 2 nights of sleeping through! yay! 8.30 until 8.30! I still went in at 1 and 5 each night - if only to pull him back down the cot to stop him bumping his head and waking up
I have to say we did cc as well about 5 weeks ago - dh broke the back of it and got rid of the 10.30 feed, I would then feed him after 1, then after 2, was just this week making sure I didn't feed before 3am and he started to go longer - 1 night was 6am, another 3am then 2 nights of nothing! Sooooo happy.

SachaF · 13/07/2007 16:14

Oh and the Tiso rain and sun cover for the old backpack carrier I have arrived today - just in time for hols! phew! looks good though.

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 13/07/2007 16:33

congrats for anni and dhs new job Sacha.

Where will you be going?

GlassSlipper - whats happened about your mice?

FoeGlassSlipper · 13/07/2007 16:46

Hi all.

Sacha - congrats on anniversary and happy birthday.

We think mice are all gone. DH sealed all the skirting boards in the cupboard under the stairs last night so they now have no way of getting in. We'll have to wait and see if the cat catches any more tbh.

I'm tired today. DH away all next week which I'm not looking forward to.

Elibean · 13/07/2007 20:02

Oh oh oh finally got our internet connection to stay for more than five seconds...at least I hope so...posted a long one last night, then lost it

Congrats, Sacha, both on anniversary and on sleeping LO! Hope you have a great time cruising...my sister just got back from one, she loved it, said it was totally surreal and great fun.

Sleeping going better here too, on the whole - maybe one feed between 7pm and 6.30am, on average, but I don't expect any better until dd starts managing feeds better during the day.

Which brings me on to food....aargh....dh thinks she has trouble swallowing (larynx??), she likes tastes but won't swallow more than a few spoonfuls of anything, and gags on anything remotely solid. Every time, and its been weeks now. I'm a wuss, I admit to feeling anxious and even tearful, and wanting to leave meal times to dh when possible....she seems to hate having anything in her mouth at all. Very unlike dd1, who ate everything and anything by 7 months.

I'm going to ask the HV, and (not very helpful) GP, but do wonder if her muscle tone isn't up to it or something?? Or is it just that she's slower to wean than dd1, and not a greedyguts like me?

Other than food, though, she's great - I swear she has a sense of humour already, is full of smiles, and sitting up much better than a week ago.

Castles, good luck with the helmet check! We must take our bored 3 yr olds out soon

Elibean · 13/07/2007 20:05

FoeGS, we had mice in our larder (where else) a few years ago - dh got some 'humane' traps and would traipse out every morning in his PJs to let them out on the Common - or on one memorable occasion, in Tim Henman's front garden (he was living nearby at the time, and dh was too lazy to make it to the end of the road ). One day we caught a VERY big mouse, must have been the one responsible for endless baby mice, and that was the end of our mousing days...

...hope you've seen the tail end of them yourself...

SachaF · 13/07/2007 20:24

DH lived in a house in his student days that 'shared' mice with other houses - the neighbouring 'for rent' board said 'mice come free'!
It will be a move to where my SIL loves - approx 140 miles away, so definately a change! Need to think about my return to work, as obviously I won't be able to but I do want to work part time, but it can all wait for now....She says on a day when she started working at 10.30am (at home), had a total break in day of 90 minutes (to BFeed) until 6.30 dinner, and is now back at her desk again trying to get work done before hols.

jabberwocky · 13/07/2007 23:57

Eli, ds1 was very similar with food. Strong gag reflux with anything even remotely lumpy. He was quite near a year before we went past very smooth purees. Then I had to play the "Food Train" game with him. "Choo-choo, swallow, swallow" I swear I literally had to teach the child how to chew and swallow food. Of course, in hindsight I really think he had undiagnosed reflux which probably had a lot to do with it. Anyway, he eats fine now, if a bit picky, but then lots of kids are so I don't think there's any real connection.

Elibean · 14/07/2007 15:38

Thanks, Jabber, thats encouraging...it does sound as though the reflux is more to blame than the laryngomalacia (I posted on the Health section, hence found out a bit more). She happily chewed on an Organix carrot stick (yuk, but am desperate!) today, and ate half a Heinz Biscotti thingy. They melt to nothing in her mouth, probably why she likes them

beansontoast · 14/07/2007 16:08

i have no idea waht im doing on this thread...no idea

anyhoo ELIBEAN...just thought id mention that you'd want to ask your GP to refer you to Speech and Lang therapy services for any persistent swallowing difficulties.

sounds funny i know but they are trained to diagnose and treat in this area as well as communication.

FoeGlassSlipper · 14/07/2007 19:51

Elibean. Hopefully the lumps will follow. Just take it slowly. My friend had a DS who was sick after every drink/feed until he was 2.5. lots of tests for everything and it gradually reduced until the medical profession but it down to reflux and lactose intolerance. sigh. It is so diffcult when all DRs vary.

Anyway guys. help me if you can

Elibean · 14/07/2007 20:01

Thanks, Beans and FGS ( FGS, did you use those initials deliberately?)

I've been reading up on weaning advice. dd enjoyed some very small pieces of kiwi and pear tonight, and held and chewed on some ripe pear with great success. Its nice and slippery, and liquid, I suppose. She then choked and was sick on some bits of pasta - not surprisingly - ditto on roast carrot.

But am encouraged by the pear

Also, can't find a cup she can manage to get any water out of - dd1 did best with Tommy Tippee, but dd2 just gums it and doesn't suck! Any ideas? Has to be easy...

FoeGlassSlipper · 14/07/2007 20:06

Eli, thanks for advice on my thread.

Good news about the pear. Try banana too as that is very mushy. And also very well cooked broccoli as that is kind of lumpy but mushy so may be ok. Dont rush though....

Also I got a cup from asda which is a bit like an anywayup cup and DD2 can get water out of that. Boots do an own brand one with a valve which is quite good too.

FoeGlassSlipper · 14/07/2007 20:07

And I love my new initials. So, when Harry Potter mania is over I am going to come up with a new F prefix to keep the initals

accessorizewithbabysick · 14/07/2007 20:33

FGS (and I'm not getting the new name, sorry!) sorry to hear about the biting, sounds awful and you have my sympathies but no ideas I'm afraid. I'm waiting for the same thing to happen with my ds, luckily he hasn't got any yet. Hopefully you won't have to wean, hard to do if you really don't want to.
Eli, pear encouraging, it's a start! Sounds very frustrating dealing with this on a daily basis. I can't say ds2 is liking lumps that much, he much prefers the super pureed stuff so I'm being very slow at introducing them. At the mo ( still on hols) adding a bit of homegrown roughly pureed stuff to jars and he seems to be ok with that.
Still lol about the jabber/Laura Ingalls Wilder thing I did buy some millet tho, not sure what to do with it as I have no skillet

LittleMissLate · 14/07/2007 20:37

Eli - my dd has mild silent reflux and is also gagging and vomiting on finger food and lumps. She's generally fine with purees though unless I try to overfeed her (I do try to encourage her to eat lots as she has been so slow to gain weight). The HV said it could be reflux related and to just keep trying and to offer finger food at the start of a meal so that there isn't too much in her stomach to come up. In the last couple of days she has managed to swallow and keep down a bit of a stage two jar - I think the texture is smoother and softer than the home-cooked food I have been preparing. Smells revolting though - don't know what happens to food when it gets put in a jar - they sound quite appetizing from the description!

FoeGlassSlipper · 14/07/2007 21:00

AQ - madeye moody has a Foe-glass which he spots the dark arts people with.
