A new thread for us all

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hmmm, what about toasting it in the skillet like I do with the millet? She could still have it dry then. Although, honestly I really wonder how important it is at this stage but then again I'm no dietician

castlesintheair · 11/07/2007 13:16

Chocolate, particularly dark, is full of iron.

Olihan · 11/07/2007 13:23

Thank heavens it's not just me, then . Jabber, I wear a bra too in bed but dh still 'forgot' . He needs to learn or it could be another year .

Have just snorted toast over the laptop at Jabber grinding millet . I know have a mental image of you dressed in a calico dress with apron a la Little House on the Prairie, with your skillet on an open fire...............!

Interesting how differently they're all coping with weaning. DS2 will gobble any of the first stage purees, gags a lot on second stage ones (no vomiting yet though Sacha, that doesn't sound like fun) but will happily chomp through a piece of toast. I'm too terrified of his sleeping getting any worse to go fully blw so he feeds himself while I eat then i shovel a jar down his throat, to make sure he's full up .

Re. the iron thing, I'm sure I read on one of the bf threads that they get plenty of iron in bm and formula has it added anyway, doesn't it?

SachaF · 11/07/2007 13:26

Castles - yup! I LOVE dark chocolate! Think I may hold off giving it to ds for a while though although he has had chocolate cake . And to add insult to my choccy obsession - dh and I have just been delivered a box from Hotel Chocolate and it specifically says on the outside 'Please do not open until your Anniversary' (which I think is tomorrow, must check certificate ) - every time I go in the kitchen I am very aware of the box sitting there......
interesting article on iron

castlesintheair · 11/07/2007 13:33

Sacha, I was thinking more along the lines of YOU eating lots of chocolate. Go on, open the box and tell us how it was!! I can never remember when our anniversary is, I always have to ask DH

Is everyone else feeding their LO's protein? I can't remember when I started with my other two. I still only give DD2 a veggie/fruit/carb solid diet.

Olihan · 11/07/2007 13:35

Sacha, we were given a box from hotel chocolat when ds2 was born and they were fantastic! Can't you just say you thought your anniv was today and blame it on sleep deprivation ?

Oh, forgot to say, ds2 lauched himself out of the Bumbo yesterday lunchtime. One minute he was in it, the next he was lying on the kitchen table. Thank goodness I was a responsible parent and put it right in the middle of the table! No more Bumbo for him now, he'll have to put up with his chin on the highchair tray!

castlesintheair · 11/07/2007 13:41

Olihan, DD2 does that too though I stopped putting her on the table when she climbed out of it whilst on the table 2 months ago . The orthotist I see (re her head) said they get really good at launching themselves out of bumbos around 6/7/8 months then in a couple of months when they've been crawling for a while they forget how to, so you can go back to using it again.

FoeGlassSlipper · 11/07/2007 14:42

I dont worry too much about iron at the moment. I think bm and formula has a bit. I also give her weetabix twice a week which has it in (yes I know it has salt & sugar too) and she has stage 2 jars with meat in too.

My DD seems to love her food. She pinched some quiche off my plate today and ate all the filling. is that OK? I'm going on the assumption that most things are ok but watch the sugar & salt and avoid nuts.

babypowder · 11/07/2007 15:56

FGS (love that ), I don't think there are any foods you should definitely avoid at this stage (unless of course there are allergies and you don't want to feed a baby nuts or anything) I feed DD2 a bit of protein now and then, but most of it is egg, dairy or pulse based. I do try her with mince when we have it (in spag bol or whatever). I wouldn't worry about a bit of quiche. (DD2 had a bit of beer can chicken last night )

Saying that, I've started worrying about salt intake, so I may have to start baking my own bread soon

weirdbird · 11/07/2007 15:56

Glad I'm not the only one whos ended up with a baby on the kitchen table after launching themselves out of the bumbo

We are still on the stage one fruit and veg purees but Hannah is one of the youngest on here and is only just 6mhts so am being careful and am following the allergy weaning advice as I have allergies.

Am having huge issues with her reflux still, DD1 had just about grown out of it by now, but Hannah is still really bad, she threw up last night as we were about to go to bed and also this morning after her mid morning feed, cause its so much more unexpected now and shes having solids so its more like normal sick I am struggling slightly to deal with it tbh, she managed to threw up in my hair today, which was just soooo gross, am beginning to worry that she will be one of the babies that doesn't grow out of it...

jabberwocky · 11/07/2007 17:58

at Oli snorting toast. I must get a profile up soon so I can prove am not actually a lentil weaver, lol.

We're doing that allergic infant weaning schedule which is really hardcore I don't think he can even have meat for a few more months. But, at this point I'm willing to do anything that might help him grow out of this blasted excema.

jabberwocky · 11/07/2007 22:11

Okay, have now gone bonkers over cloth diapers and am just a bit that my "expedited" order from Canada will take over 2 weeks to get here! I mean it's only British Columbia, for heavens sake, but it's evidently taken over a week to even get in the US system

babypowder · 11/07/2007 22:20

Jabber, I have known it to take months to get something from my sister in BC. It drives me insane - Canada Post sucks!

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of reusables. You will start to want nappies in a way you only previously desired shoes

Olihan · 11/07/2007 22:36

Lol at all the babies throwing themselves out of bumbos .

WB, my friend's little boy had reflux quite badly and his disappeared once he started walking and was upright for most of the day. The frequency reduced once he could sit though.

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 11/07/2007 22:44

I have been toying with the idea of getting a bumbo. I'm glad I didn't.

jabberwocky · 11/07/2007 22:53

Had no idea the post was so bad over there, bp. Lol at the shoes reference...it is bad. I have found myself surfing diaper sites during my precious few moments on the internet...'tis a turning point in my life, methinks

babypowder · 11/07/2007 22:56

Just think, Jabber, you can boil the nappies on your wood stove with one hand while you grind millet with the other, in true Laura Ingalls Wilder fashion

jabberwocky · 12/07/2007 03:08
Grin
Olihan · 12/07/2007 07:48

Jabber, what's the time difference where you are? Is 3am UK time late or early for you?

castlesintheair · 12/07/2007 09:50

WB, DD2's reflux is still terrible. Probably worse now she's on solids I took her to the doctor on Monday to get another medication (can't remember name but Elibean knows it!) and I have to be referred to a paed (3 month wait) to get it. She'll be 10 months by then and DD1 started to improve at 9 months and was completely fine by aged one so I'm just going to sit it out. It's bl**dy hard on top of everything else to have to wash all her bedding every day plus change mine and her clothes at least twice, not to mention shampoo the carpet ... Sorry bit of a whinge there .

weirdbird · 12/07/2007 17:48

Castles - Glad I'm not the only one still shampooing the carpet (and washing the sofa covers!) still, Hannah is under teh Paediatrician and is on Ranitadine and Domperidone, the Ranitidine reduces the amount of stomach acid and stops the pain of it coming back up, the Domperidone makes th food digest faster and stops it coming back up.

Jabber - You definitely need to put some photos up as I will forever have you pictured as Laura Ingalls Wilder otherwise!

jabberwocky · 13/07/2007 01:41

will have to get dh to sit down with me at the computer this weekend - I'm such a technophobe

Oli, you all are 6 hours ahead of me there so 3 am for you is 9 pm for me. Terribly inconvenient, actually...

babypowder · 13/07/2007 09:01

I've been reading that thread about the things we're supposed to do but don't (like brushing baby teeth) and it occurred to me that I chuck DD1 into the garden nearly every day with no sunscreen on at all. And sometimes we'll go for a walk with DD1 on my back, and she won't have a sun hat on. I'm only putting this on here cos I'm too scared to admit to it on the other thread

babypowder · 13/07/2007 10:40

I should probably point out that we do live in NE Scotland, where the sun is rarely seen. Not that that excuses it at all.

Olihan · 13/07/2007 11:16

BP, I very rarely remember to put sunscreen on them when they're playing in the garden. They just potter in and out but for some reason I don't think about sunscreen unless we're going out, out.

Jabber, are you actually an American, or are you an expat? You come across in your posts as very british and unamerican (iyswim) but I have a vague recollection that you're a southern belle .

Well, ds2 surpassed himself with his sleeping last night. He was a bit unsettled during the evening, waking every couple of hours, then he woke when I went to bed at 11 and decided he wasn't going back to sleep until 2:30am, then woke again at 4 and fussed until 5:30, then ds1 got up at 6. He was just really restless all night, even when he was in bed with me so I've no idea what was going on. Needless to say, I'm not the most cheerful, patient mummy this morning! Thank goodness for preschool, at least ds1 is occupied elsewhere!
