you choose - for you or for your bubba

I can't believe the May thread is so excited that their babies are arriving. That time in our lives seems like soooooo long ago .

Anyone else thinking of getting one of those "snot suckers" (charming expression, eh!), I bought one the other day in Poundland (for £1 - you'd never have guessed that would you?) as part of a set with "snot sucker", thermometer, medicine dropper, baby nail clippers and scissors.

Have bought Toby one of these - £10 at the local car boot sale. I had thought he might still be a bit too small for it, but he absolutely loves it. Even if he can't actually reach all the toys on it yet, at least it's getting him upright and leaving both his arms free so it's a bit easier for him to play than when he's lying on the floor/in his playnest.

We spent yesterday at our local agricultural show, and had a BBQ on Saturday, so quite a nice weekend.

muppethasakitten · 04/06/2007 15:49

Are the snot suckers like those pooters you can get for mini-beasts? If so, I wonder whether my ds1 would mind me borrowing his

Samuel is loving his door bouncer... keeps us all amused anyway! Why can't they make ones for grown-ups?

divastrop · 04/06/2007 17:09

lol@'snot suckers'.i can still remember the contents of the suction pump when dd2 was in hospital...ewww.unless Elsie gets very bunged up i'll just let nature take its course.shes pretty good at sneezing out gunk anyway

today dp and i went to fil's to show him the baby, and tell him the wedding date.dd2 had fun playing in the garden with her uncle.they were throwing bits of grass at each other and laughing.

went to pick up ds2 from nursery and they said he'd been asleep for 2 hours.then we got halfway home and he puked up.then we got home and i puked up.oh joy.i dont know if its abug or just the heat.

better go Elsie is crying at me and dp is very busy playing his computer game

spongecake · 04/06/2007 17:22

diva, discussed is a dirty word in my family.....when i said he would need feeding, they sort of glanced at each other and ma said oooh in a really disproving manner- so i snapped " i am fed up with this- what is your problem, its a natural thing and if you don't like it then bugger off home. its not as though i am torturing kittens" there was a deadly silence, mum denied huffing at me, then no one spoke for ten mins. when they did they changed the subject. and as i said below, left!
they promised to come back in 2 months!

snot thing, feel really queasy just thinking about it.

after saying he is awake all the time, he is now sleeping constantly and feeding lots when wakes- a big change, is this ok, al you ladies with more than one?

Booboobedoo · 04/06/2007 17:31

Snot Sucker

Am at these families who are so unsupportive of BFing. What do they think people did before formula was invented? Strap babies to the underside of cows?

foxcub · 04/06/2007 17:48

Sponge - I just don't understand why some people can't cope with seeing a Mum feeding her baby - my Mum used to get all embarassed but after three babies, she's kind of used to me whipping my boobs out now.

I don't use a snot sucker - I use a cotton wool bud (on a stick, you know the things) and wipe it round inside his nostrils very grnetly to pull the snot out. Its quite satisfying actually

Monti is all bunged up too...

He is awake all evening and goes off about 9-10pm..he needs loads of attention and entertainment during the eveneing which coincides nicely with when DH wals through the door

kittyhas6 · 04/06/2007 18:20

Sponge I've never noticed if anyone has been embarassed by me feeding my babies. I wouldn't care though so i guess it wouldn't matter. Must say though your mother is a bit odd .

Yes it's quite normal for babies to change their sleeping/ waking/ feeding/ crying etc patterns very quickly. Hey, if sleep's on the agenda, thank the lord!!

Shrinkinglily · 04/06/2007 19:44

Have never heard of a snot sucker, you learn something new every day!

foxcub · 04/06/2007 19:45

"strap babies to the underside of cows?" PMSL

Piffle · 04/06/2007 20:39

Hi all no time as per usual...
Finn angelic still was up tio 10pm last night but twas bliss as he was so fab and lovely. Lots of hand staring and playgym toy grabbing happening now.
Given that he then slept til 6 and then 8 well, what's not to love huh!
anyway enough bragging
Boob do make me laugh, you have quit some turn of phrase lassie!

Ahh with the feeding I just whip it out discreetly in front of in laws and brothers and their girlfriends, FIL I think is a little embarrassed but more on my behalf I think
When we went to PIL's when Finn was 3 wks old, Finn was howling on his usual 6-9 pm shoutathon as had back then, chinese dinner arrived, well I hate cold food so on I popped Finn and ate at the same time, was right opposite FI who thought it was a hoot and fed me filo wrapped king prawns on his fork!!!

I aso bf at debenhas last week and saw one grandmother smiling benevolently at me in a kindred fashion LOL

Anyway have about 6 trapped nerves in neck groin and leg (ie: agony) so am off for rub from DS (13 and a mean masseur for money)love to al and hope have not missed any majr news good or bad and not offended anyone by not mentioning something
Should have more time tomorrow ro catch up hut dd's pre school is shut again this week so ARGGHHHH

divastrop · 04/06/2007 21:23

sponge-some babies sleep alot more when its hot and feed more due to thirst,or he could be having a growth spurt.

my mum does the silence thing also.i had a go at her about that mouldy crumb thing when she was here-ie 'how would you like it if i went into your house and started pointing out all the things you hadnt cleaned properly?you'd think i was a right cheeky cow!'and she just looked at me as though i was mad then went silent for 10 mins.
she knows she cant comment on the way i look afetr the baby now,as im more experienced than her,so she chose to comment on how much food etc dp was giving the kitten

an old woman went up to Elsie in town today and started making clucking noises at her like she was a dog or something, then she asked how old she was,to which dp replied 'its none of your business'.
he says the things i think but dont say as im too polite/scared of getting a smack in the gob!

CallieNewMum · 04/06/2007 22:21

Hello ladies, have been away from MN due to spending the week with my family and other animals and then having friends stay from Sat till this evening, which has been lovely.

Last week, I thought I had more or less cracked the sleeping through thing - one night DS went from feeding at about 7.30/8 ish until nearly 6am!!! But then it's got steadily earlier again and for the last two nights has been back to 3-4 wake up. Oh well. I've got a very slight cough which comes out beautifully at night as soon as I lie down and keeps me awake for ages/wakes me up - VERY annoying when the baby's asleep!

There's lots of hand sucking and drooling going on here too. I've got teething gel but I need to get things for him to chew as he won't take a dummy. It's fascinating seeing the development going on. Still lots of crying though.

Diva I think I'm getting my period. Don't know whether to be glad or not. .

Rosy, your summer peregrinations sound fantastic! I might be going to Ireland this summer, either Co Galway or Dublin.

Dolly, we've just applied for DS's passport too, as we're thinking of going to France. Now, how hard is it going to be with a bottle-fed and probably weaning baby to travel??????? Any tips? It will be car and ferry. Btw, I went to San Remo in northern Italy in Dec which was lovely, but it would probably be mobbed in the summer. The Cinque Terre towns further down the coast are lovely too.

Mossy, you're sounding much chirpier, which is great. Have been thinking about you lots, sorry didn't post on your thread in the end but must have written loads in my head - if only there was a direct connection to the net.

Rosy, how old is your second-eldest? You've had three pretty close together have you?

Shrinkinglily · 04/06/2007 22:50

I'm always eating and breast feeding at the same time! Spilling food on Hasan etc.

Callie, dd was 4 in January and ds2 was 2 in dec, Diva and Kitty have close together babies. I have found it easier this time but not sure if that is due to slightly bigger age gap or the personalities of ds2 and ds3...

Wonder what Jay and Laidback are up to.

eidsvold · 05/06/2007 03:43

kiwi jolly jumpers - they really are popular over here - my lot have never had one though.

mossie you know how those mossies can be !!

snot suckers are fab - we are still sharing our murky fluey coldy thing and the snot suckers is fab for dd3.

had a bit of a mad morning - had to sell t-shirts at kindy - dd2 thought it was fab as she got to stay. She then told me when it was time to go - to go and feed dd3 so she could play for a bit longer!! I did - no harm - and dd2 is missing playgroup today. Then off to the library and home. Sorting out money and receipts for t-shirts to hear dd2 ask me to come and get her. Finish off - shout down the hall for her to have a rest - then thought - better go check.

Lucky I did.....

she had decided to change her own nappy - pooey one - and wipe her own bum cue dirty nappy on carpet, pooey wipes on carpet and one small smear on carpet!!

The funny thing was - she then had her clothes on inside out - well dd1's clothes. Why you ask ( probably not cause you are probably asleep by now) It is inside out day at kindy and dd2 wanted to have her inside out day at home!! gotta love her.

dd3 has found her thumb and loves sucking it like mad - will not take a dummy but boy does that thumb get a work out.

Shrinkinglily · 05/06/2007 08:36

Oh no Eidsvold! We've had one or two of those incidents here too!

LunarSea · 05/06/2007 09:29

Is a jolly jumper one of those sling things with a spring you hang from a doorframe and they can bounce up and down (like this)? We had one for ds1 (and have probably still got it somewhere) and he loved it. I sort of remember that it was from 3 months, but looking at that one online it says when they can support their head firmly (which Toby can) so perhaps it's worth digging out now?

Off for a walk today, then the dreaded baby clinic so they can tell me he's below the percentile line he was born on again (no surprise, ds1 was exactly the same - born on 91%, but more or less followed 75% afterwards), and then football practice for ds1 after school. By which time I'll be shattered, after Toby decided it was playtime at 5am this morning.

Had some emails from work - they want me to do about a weeks work, spread over a couple of weeks, and then will tag the time onto the end of my mat leave. Also heard that one of the people I deal with at a client is having a sex change and is now a she - so that'll be interesting when I go back.

foxcub · 05/06/2007 10:15

lunar - haha i knew they wouldn't be able to cope without you

diva - i wish i would say what i mean when horrid people start poking monti and grabbing his hands

we've got one of those jolly jumpers - must dig it out...

CallieNewMum · 05/06/2007 11:35

Ew, Eids, that sounds like not fun to clean up. Well, we seem to be having a sleepy day here. It's stupid but I still start to worry when he does this, rather than getting on and doing something useful with the time - like have a shower for example!

It's glorious sun outside but I feel shattered today - DS woke up at 1 last night but as I was preparing milk went back to sleep without feeding, then I think at about 3 briefly then properly at 4. Tonight I really must go to bed earlier and get the hours when I know for sure(cross fingers emoticon) he will be asleep. He did fall asleep without having his last feed of the day so that's probably why the early wake up.

I'm also feeling a bit anxious for no proper reason, again probably just tiredness or hormones on the go. The period I thought I was getting may have been a false alarm but I thought I was getting pains last night which brought back to me all the horrors of the endometriosis and the years of suffering, and made me worry it could come back fast. I suddenly wanted to be pregnant again! Now I have low-grade anxiety that it will never happen again. Sorry for the moan, am hoping I'll feel better once I've offloaded a bit.

Hope you all have a nice day and it's sunny where you are (except if you want rain of course, Eids!).

Booboobedoo · 05/06/2007 11:40

Morning!

Poor little Jonny's very snotty today, and DH (in his wisdom) decided to steam-sterilise the snot-sucker. . It is now a snot-pancake.

I'm going to try Foxy's cotton-bud method.

Lunar: I really want one of those door-bouncers. I know DS would love it! Don't think we can run to one this month though.

Eidsvold: you've described my nightmare. Do many kids try and change their own nappies? I think Kitty told a similar story.

Piffle: Finn sounds like an angel! I think a nights sleep is some way off for me...

Diva: well done for standing up to your Mum!

Rosy: I eat over DS too. Got a muslin 'specially for the purpose.

Callie: will DS be weaned according to his EDD or his birth age?

Booboobedoo · 05/06/2007 11:41

X posts Callir. Hope you feel calmer soon.

shanks313 · 05/06/2007 12:55

Hi everyone

We are all doing okay

I had the health visitor come yesterday with the PND test and I scored 6 so not bad.She was really nice and chatty.Come bearing gifts of weaning info,a toothbrush and cup for Deanna. She weighed Deanna and shes now 12lb 2 and on the 25th centile which she said was prefect.

We have now got a routine which has worked for the last few weeks with Deanna,we bath her about 8.30 then give her a bottle, shes usually asleep by 9.30 and doesnt wake till 6.30-7am.

Shes a very strong baby, can go from a lying down position in my arms to a sitting position if shes determnined.

Deanna had her 2nd jabs today and now Im expecting the miserable baby lol

DollyPopsOut · 05/06/2007 13:18

Hi girls

SO much to catch up on....

Eids - DD1 does that a lot (she's 2y and 2m). I don't mind too much when it's just wee but poo is awful! I suppose I shoudl think about potty training but can't be bothered yet. I suppose once we've come back from our (as yet unbooked) hol it'll be time.

Callie - I know what yo mean about anxiety as I suffer from it a lot. A friend told me today that she was pregnant and I felt so jealous (pleased for her but sad it's not me if you see what I mean). Plus my next door neighbour's waters have gone, so she'll have her baby shortly. I must et my head sorted about no 3 but am worried that it might not happen. It's stressful being a mummy sometimes!

Boo - men - try to be helpful and break things! Hope you can still use it! They are brilliant things though.

Diva - well done for standing up to your mum.

Hello everyone else!

I went to St Thomas's milk bank yest and got lots of bottles. How much milk shoudl I leave for DD when I go out tomorrow? She is 12lb 6 now as we had an impromptu weigh in on their scales. I will be out for about 6 hours - do you think 2 x 6oz bottles will be enough? I don't want to thaw more than necessary!

Must dash as we have friuends coming over to play and house is a tip! Filthy too! Better have a quick whizz round

Love to all

XXXX

divastrop · 05/06/2007 13:42

callie-sorry youre not feeling too good.its probably due to sleep deprivation or hormones as you say.i had some spotting that i thought was my period starting when i was pregnant with dd2 and Elsie, when i would have been due on.it was implantation bleeding

i still havent got my period .did another test yesterday just in case and it was defo negative.am going to the doctors on thursday.i keep getting period-type pains and im very irritable, its like groundhog day, stuck in the day before my period.

booboo-none of my children have ever tried to change their own nappy, but they do such stinky poos i have to change them straight away so they wouldnt really get a chance.

shanks-good to hear Deanna is doing well(and sleeping through).

Elsie isnt to well today, she seems to have a temp and is quite sleepy.shes been a bit constipated as well but i managed to get her to 'go' by giving her a very long tummy massage.

both babies are asleep and ive managed to make all the phonecalls ive been meaning to make for ages.

DollyPopsOut · 05/06/2007 13:53

the bottles are for me to fill and give to them for the prem babies, not for me to go out socialising / They said yest their smallest baby at the moment was 26 weeks and weighs 500g. Hope s/he will be ok. Callie, was Jordi born at 28 weeks? I remember he was abit heavier - this little one is barely more than a pound.

foxcub · 05/06/2007 13:55

Snot pancake ???

Monti is very snotty and his eyes are all misty and watery - has a barking cough. He coughs then kinds of shouts in surprise which is very funny.

I've promoted him today.

He was in the baby cot part of his Phil & Teds buggy, but he's now been promoted to the clip on seat, put at the back. You could see he was really pleased when I placed him in it!

Callie - sorry you're feeling all anxious. R U thinking of yring again soon? have you asked whether its better to try soon, re. the endemetriosis? My sister has it and has had a terrible time over the years - with the pain each month. [hugs]

I'm still getting woken twice nightly - am almost used to it now LOL!

DD used to change her nappy and yes, we've often had poo up the back and poo encrusted rugs etc
