you choose - for you or for your bubba

I can't believe the May thread is so excited that their babies are arriving. That time in our lives seems like soooooo long ago .

Diva - pmsl at weeing in the cat litter!!

I don't have a webcam and wouldn't know how to use it is I did . I am over 40 remember!!

I weaned DS1 and DD at 4.5 months - and have got loads of stick for it on MN!

Kjay - Monti was a cling on until about yesterday, when he suddenly changed!

Kitty - how many drinks can I have you my dear?

muppethasakitten · 23/05/2007 14:45

Oh god... what happens to you if you tell mners you're weaning b4 6 months then?

foxcub · 23/05/2007 14:47

You get about 100 links provided, which all tell you you are an evil bad person

kittyhas6 · 23/05/2007 15:07

I have always started weaning at 12 weeks ish. Not much, just little tasters here and there. Without fail the children have been more settled as a result. I can't imagine them haviing to wait until 6 months . It'll change again soon , it always does and then in a few years time thry'll be at how babies were denied solid food.

AmieR · 23/05/2007 15:48

Thanks for the tip off on the metanium nappy rash cream ladies! Joseph's bottom is no longer a beacon!

My mother couldn't believe it when I told her we were advised not to give solids before 6 months! She was advised from 9 when we were LO's!

evenhope · 23/05/2007 16:22

DD had her first jabs this morning at 11am. She screamed for both and took ages to stop. At 2pm she was overtired and trying to sleep and started this awful crying we've never heard before and wouldn't stop.

One of her poor little legs is bright red. She wouldn't feed and would only settle when DH walked up and down with her but every time she went to sleep she started screaming again. Only stopped about 30 mins ago and now the boys have come in and set the dog off and she's moaning again.

Worst is I was worried sick about having the jabs in the first place and now it looks like I was right to be worried

TheBlonde · 23/05/2007 16:34

Evenhope - hope DD is better soon. You could give baby paracetamol if you have any

Fox/Muppet/Kitty - I didn't wean DS til 6 mths and I might wait even longer with DD.

divastrop · 23/05/2007 17:09

evenhope-hope dd is feeling better soon

muppet-saying you intend to wean before 6 months is like saying you give your child sausage rolls and fruit shoots for lunch everyday on here.

i weaned mine at different ages, the recomended age was 3 months when i had ds1 though and they just put it up to 4 when i had dd1.i just try them with little bits when i think they're ready, all babies are different.

LaidbackinEngland · 23/05/2007 17:47

Hi - Evenhope sorry to hear that your DD had a bad reaction to her jabs.

I am off to boots to buy a breat pump as I'm going to a wedding on Saturday and have to leave Amos woth a friend for a few hours. I looked on the internet and the Boots web site describes the Medela breastpump as "handy and trendy" WTF a breastpump trendy !?!

Sorry to hear from those with sleeping and feeding problems.... I echo Lunars advice about trying somehow to delay a feed so you can accumulate more milk....that EMPTY feeling is horrible

LaidbackinEngland · 23/05/2007 17:48

A breast pump even ...

foxcub · 23/05/2007 18:09

Evenhope - when Monti had his jabs we gave him Calpol beforehand to take the edge off the jab. The Calpol did nothing to stop him getting a high temperature afterwards So I gave him the children's Nurofen - which says it can be given from 3 months - 10 minutes later he was happy and content again. You could try that if you have any - I'm sure it won't do any harm.

Talking of which...Diva when DS was born the advice was to wean at 3 months, with DD (2003) it suddenly changed to 6 months. Surely all babies differ anyway i.e. a big baby will be hungrier and have a bigger tum than a teeny baby? I got into a huge "discussion" on a thread a few weeks back when about 10 health facists came on and "advised" me how I'd damaged my LO's health by weaning at 4.5 months.

One said "how did you know they were ready for food? Actually they were just having a growth spurt"

I said "they were sitting up, hungry and trying to grab my food" LOL!!!

Well Ok, I wasn't quite that assertive...

foxcub · 23/05/2007 18:10

Laidback - does your new breast pump have a holder for your skinnylatte then?

kiwibella · 23/05/2007 19:47

fox!! I have the medela and it is fab. I do wish I had either bought medela bottles or the avent pump (I have avent bottles) so that I don't have to decant.

kiwibella · 23/05/2007 19:53

oh, Evenhope!! Sorry your lo is not happy after her jabs. I hope that she is not too upset and able to settle tonight. It is so worrying.

kiwibella · 23/05/2007 19:55

Kitty: what sorts of foods are little tasters? Kate is coming up 13 weeks (I think?) and I can't imagine giving her food just yet. I don't know how she would hold it even?? I do remember starting MissE on solids at 4 months though - at the time she seemed to need it.

kittyhas6 · 23/05/2007 20:11

Evenhope, hope your lo makes a speedy recovery

Kiwi, I start with bits of pureed apple, banana, potato, things like that. Just a tiny amount to give them a taste and let them get used to using their tongues. It's quite a while before they can take any real amount in.

Laidback, a wedding sounds exciting. Have you got a lovely frock to wear?

divastrop · 23/05/2007 20:24

i weaned ds1 at 8 weeks,on the advice of my hv!!the thing is,it was the crappy milk that was the problem, but i dont hink hv's are allowed to recommend specific brands of formula,so she couldnt tell me to change his milk

my hv with ds2 said 'another mum i go to see has told me that her baby is alot happier on aptamil'.sneaky, but im so glad she said it,or i would have had a colicky ds2 for months.

laidback-i havent been to a wedding in years,i'm
i'm going to one in october though

morocco · 23/05/2007 20:25

hiya everyone
v jealous of meetup talk - come on northern lasses, when are we going to do ours??

weaning talk already!! omg time is flying. i plan on wholely bf til the age of about 3 so I can miss out all the messy bits and they can go straight onto knives, forks and napkins. lol. I am going to try for 6 months though. with ds1 advice was 4.5 but i thought that meant if you didn't start then that they'd be malnourished or something so got really stressed about the whole thing. ds2 was starved til 6 months but the best bit was being able to miss out all that crappy blending and pureeing and go straight onto normal food. I read last month that it's called baby led weaning so I was very ahead of the crowd there trendy not lazy that's me!

for any first time mums looking to find playgroups etc I'd really recommend the childcare information service, ours is based at our main library. they can send you out lists and lists of nurseries/creches etc but also playgroups/coffee mornings in your area. click here for internet site but if you give them a ring they are really helpful (well they are near us anyhow)

CallieNewMum · 23/05/2007 20:25

Hello all, have had a few days break from MN as have been doing quite a lot in RL. I went to a Bliss (prem baby charity) meeting on Monday, then for lunch and a walk with the people who were at it afterwards. Yesterday I met up with a workmate and was reminded of all the reasons I DON'T want to return to work , then today I took Jordi to baby massage for the first time. He was pretty good, only cried a few times, but he did manage to pee on me when I picked him up without his nappy on - I thought I was safe as he'd peed right at the start when I first took his nappy off. Two of the other mums asked me if I wanted to have lunch with them after I'd been telling them about him being prem and missing out on all the ante-natal stuff etc, which was really nice.

Mossy, I hope things have improved with your DH. Will post on your other thread.

Evenhope, I hope your DD is feeling better. Jordi started crying quite badly about an hour after his second lot of jabs, but I gave him baby paracetamol and it really helped.

Am of all those going away next week, particularly Kiwi all the way to Oz!!! We're just starting to think about holidays for later in the summer and DP got a passport form for J today. Don't know how we'll cope with travelling with him mind...it will have to be ferry and car (and I'm the driver, as DP doesn't ) as J can't fly until he's over six months old cos he was on oxygen.

morocco · 23/05/2007 20:37

duh
children#s information service not childcare!

kiwibella · 23/05/2007 22:06

Callie... those "meetings" with workmates are an awful reminder. I'm dreading returning!!

eidsvold · 23/05/2007 23:04

i weaned dd1 at 4 months even though the advice was 6 months at the time. However I took it really really slowly - just the tiniest amounts.

dd2 was not even interested although I started with her at 6 months - she probably took until about 8 months to be remotely interested in food.

I usually give them a bit of paracetamol about 20 minutes before their vaccs and it seems to take the edge off.

dd3 hasn't started hers despite being 10 weeks this week as we have such a germy household at the moment with the flu and colds etc going around - am going to wait until we are all cold and flu free - which might be a bit longer - this seems viral and not good.

our nighttime routine is not bad - dd3 went from 10ish when she had her last feed until 5am.

I tell you actually getting sleep makes all the difference. Dd2 was a very restless baby and I remember it took the longest time for us to get a real block of sleep at night. A huge shock after dd1 who did not wake at all at night - she was fed by ng tube until she was 8 weeks old and had her surgery and so she would just sleep and we would get up and put her feed in her tube. THen when she came home from cardiac surgery - have a feed at 10pm with her medication and go through until 6am when we would have to give her more medication and she would have a feed.
