Hi!

Any mums out there with April newborns? If there is already a group going please point me in the right direction!

I’m a first time mum with a 2 week old little girl Smile looking for some people to chat to with similar aged babies!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Sam91TRS15 · 15/05/2018 15:02

Hi @PossibiliTea, I think that's normal but worth mentioning to your health visitor if you are concerned.
I hope you are starting to feel better after your birth and wee ones reflux gets sorted Smile

amysaurus87 · 15/05/2018 15:28

@PossibiliTea how has the reflux been diagnosed? My little one brings up feeds and gets hiccups a lot, the health visitor mentioned this could be a touch of reflux, but I have no idea what to do about it!

He is getting his tongue tie looked at tomorrow, so I'm hoping that eases the pain with feeding. He is gaining weight but feeding is painful and slow, usually about 40mins (he gets both breasts every feed)

Anyone else breastfeeding and have a really a squirmy baby? My little one has started to pull back whilst my nipple is still in his mouth (OUCH!!) nas well as just generally being very fidgety whilst on the breast.

PossibiliTea · 15/05/2018 16:46

It’s been really difficult because she’s constantly hiccuping, fussy during and after feeds, does this strange thing where she throws her head back and arches, goes red, coughs... loads of things you could just see she’s in pain!! The reflux milk is helping a little but I’m due to go back for a review.

It was thick so I asked HV if I could alternate it with normal formula but she brought this back up threefold and hasn’t actually been very sick before then.

Just make a note of what’s happening and when and take it to the GP see what they think. The first time I went they just gave me a print out of advice I’d already tried, so make sure they do listen if you have concerns

Sam91TRS15 · 15/05/2018 19:11

@amysaurus87 my DD had a tongue tie, it didn't actually affect feeding but I really wanted it snipped as I didn't want speech problems. The doc tried to stop me getting it done but if you feel strongly about getting it sorted don't let them put you off. It's such a simple procedure, it would have been done in the time it took him to try dissuade me

El1995 · 15/05/2018 23:10

My lo doesn't have tongue tie but just a really short tongue....takes just over an hour usually to finish the bottle 😣😣 he also does the eye thing, especially when tired, they roll all around the place!

Twounder1 · 15/05/2018 23:12

Had my ds on the second of April :)

yustynne · 16/05/2018 10:42

Hope you are all fine! I'm in and out of the GPs with my dd as she has got a rash all over her head, face, neck and chest and also developed a lump next to the groin that appears only when she cries a lot. I'm concerned but GP says she looks fine and they will not treat any of these for now. Have you had anything similar? What could it be?
amy and Tea my lo also started fussing too much on the breast like a week ago. She throws her head back, pushes her body away. Why would she start doing this?

forestftm · 16/05/2018 10:51

LO is 4 weeks old tomorrow.

Will be nice to have contact with mums with LO's of a similar age. No real Mum friends and I live in a rural area.

We had a rough delivery, but LO is doing well, and I am on the mend also.

Fieau · 16/05/2018 11:15

My son is doing the same when feeding....throws his head back (while still latched on which hurts!!) and arches his back. Due a midwife visit today so going to ask her what it could be.

Also having problems getting him to transfer back to his crib after I've fed him at night - I think it's too cold and we warm it with a hot water bottle at the beginning of the night which helps but by four am the hot water bottle is too cold to warm the mattress and it would disturb him too much to go fill it up again. Any ideas?

amysaurus87 · 16/05/2018 14:17

@yustynne no idea why my little one started doing this, I've got the health visitor coming to see me tomorrow so I'm going to ask her about it, I'm also going to ask her about him screaming after every feed as I'm pretty sure this is not normal.

Had his tongue tie snipped today so hoping that makes things better, he cries more about being bundled up than having it cut! He's never been a fan of having his arms in.

@Fieau you could keep him wrapped in a blanket while feeding him, which should keep him warm when he goes back into the crib? I'm having similar issues, my little one will only settle next to me after a feed, and I then move him to the crib once he's asleep.

Sam91TRS15 · 16/05/2018 14:45

@yustynne can you post a pic of the rash? DD had eczema early on, took a long time to have it diagnosed - could be that?
@Fieau I have the same problem once he is up for first feed at night he only goes back to sleep in our bed, I just don't feel like fighting it yet 😂

Fieau · 16/05/2018 17:55

@Sam91TRS15 I'm just so worried about rolling on him that I can't sleep properly!! Blush

yustynne · 16/05/2018 19:51

I am interested in what your HVs are going to say about the babies throwing their heads back and arching their backs while feeding. HV is coming to me tomorrow as well and I'll ask the same question.
Fieau I keep my LO swaddled while feeding at night so she stays warm when transfered to the basket.
Sam this is my baby's rash. Any ideas?

Sam91TRS15 · 16/05/2018 23:25

@Fieau I do worry about that too, but I had to do it with DD as she was an awful sleeper so I have gotten used to it. I make sure me and DP are as far apart as possible and giving him as much space in the middle as I can. Plus he is usually up every hour after the initial wake up so I don't think I go into too much of a deep sleep.
@yustynne that looks similar to DS, he had bad acne all over his face, it's clearly now but has moved on his chest and back and the skin is very red around it too. I have been told to speak to GP about it so I will either week until his checkup on Tuesday or Friday if it gets worse. Hopefully I can get some useful information to pass on. I'm really hoping it's not eczema.

I think I spoke to soon about colic, today has been awful, lots of crying but nothing helps and he seems to be sore when pooping Sad

Aspenn17 · 17/05/2018 07:50

Hi all, welcome to everyone new that’s joined.

My daughter does the pulling away and arching her back thing too sometimes, I presumed it was wind?

Got her weighed yesterday and she’s lost weight! :( I know it’s nothing to worry about at this stage but she was back to her birth weight at 2 weeks so I thought feeding was going really well, she feeds regularly and for a good amount of time so I’m confused as to what could be going wrong (she is 4 weeks now)

OP posts:
PossibiliTea · 17/05/2018 17:50

The anti reflux milk is really helping with feeds however... it’s really thick so takes a long time to go down, she wears herself out I have to wake her up with a drop of infacol (bad mummy!) also it has made her poos really strange! Like mustard coloured plastercine.

HV wasn’t too bothered about anything as she is gaining weight, which is great but not so helpful when it does seem like she’s in pain when feeding

How are you all getting on?

amysaurus87 · 18/05/2018 18:56

Looks like my little one might have an intollerance to cows milk..bless him. Time for me to go dairy free! Anyone got any advice?

Sam91TRS15 · 19/05/2018 09:24

Oh @amysaurus87 that sounds difficult. I tried going dairy free when DD eczema was really bad early on. It was difficult - luckily for me she wasn't intolerant to dairy so i didnt have to do it for long. Why do they think your little one is intolerant?

amysaurus87 · 19/05/2018 09:35

@Sam91TRS15 the breastfeeding specialist suggested it yesterday as he is fussy after feeds, despite being winded, he has mucousy poos, which are occasionally green, brings up feeds and gets hiccups a lot, I know some of these fit symptoms of reflux but she suggested I try dairy free and see if it helps.

Myalterego1 · 19/05/2018 11:11

Hi all my little man arrived on 26th April so just over 3 wks old now... He Doing good is breastfed so that has it's sore moments also has those spots my other 3 children had same it's baby acne they all seem to get it nothing to worry about my phn said rub some breast milk Into them may help a little .. He does b plagued with hiccups all the time don't seem to bother him to much most the time

Fieau · 20/05/2018 10:08

How long should it take to lose baby weight? I am only two kg off my pre pregnancy weight, and it's only been for weeks. I've been eating as much as possible but I'm worrying that this means I'm not getting enough calories for breastfeeding. I've got a history of disordered eating and really struggle with my relationship with food. Sad

amysaurus87 · 20/05/2018 11:08

@Fieau I think I've lost my baby weight very quickly, I was doing slimming world during my pregnancy and according to my mum's scales I'm back at the weight I was when I first found out I was pregnant...in that case I've lost 3 stone in 4 weeks (well almost 5 weeks).

I did go through a period of having no appetite at all, but it's likely that's linked to the mastitis and that the GP has diagnosed me with post natal depression, I've also got a history of disordered eating, I was basically anorexic at university but was never diagnosed.

Like you I worry I'm not eating enough either, especially as he is feeding loads at the moment, which I know means he is probably having a development leap, but my sleep deprived brain says I'm not making enough, because I'm not eating enough and it's being made even harder as it looks like Joshua has a dairy intollerance so I've had to go totally dairy free, which means I've had to axe most of my favourite breastfeeding snacks.

I think you tend to lose baby weight quicker if your breastfeeding, I think it burns like an extra 500/600 calories a day.

Fieau · 20/05/2018 13:00

I don't know what I would do if I had to go dairy free... All of my meals and snacks involve full fat dairy and I also drink milk as my main drink for extra calories. How long do you have to do that for?

I know what you mean about worrying about not making enough. I give my baby a bottle of formula every night before bed even though he cluster feeds all evening, just because I'm convinced he must still be hungry.

amysaurus87 · 20/05/2018 13:17

At least a month as it takes that long for the protein to leave my system! It's so hard as I need to axe all dairy, even hidden dairy like whey, lactose etc, it's a nightmare as it's hidden in so much.

I've managed to not top up with formula for about 2 weeks now, as I was encouraged to just breastfeed because of the mastitis and I really don't want that to come back! Joshua feeds every 2/3 hours during the day, and then about every 1.5 hours in the evening.

forestftm · 20/05/2018 20:35

@amysaurus87 I can recommend an app called "FoodMaestro"

You can add a lifestyle setting for dairy free and use the app to scan products in the supermarket.

I had to go gluten lactose and fermentable sugar free a few years ago and this was a lifesaver!!

I lost almost all my baby weight within 2 weeks, but I had a massive decrease in appetite and was expressing. I don't think there is a right or wrong amount of time to lose the weight.

I was lucky and didn't really put on very much, was all baby, but am of the opinion that it took 9ish months to make LO so can take 9 months to go back to somewhere near pre baby 😊
