@Hazandduck we haven't been brave enough to go out and play! We dithered on our walk/dash from the car to baby group this morning. It's perishingly cold here -6, so we have looked at the weather through the window. I hope your hubby gets home safely!

DiscombobulatedWomble · 01/03/2018 19:09

Haha @sock our little one loves it if we take the fish off and make it vibrate on her tummy & feet! I'm hoping it will get a giggle out of her soon!

Hope everyone gets home safe, I'm hoping it will stop actually snowing tomorrow then I will be brave& take her out in her bear suit!

Hello!

I hope people don't mind me jumping into this thread! I'd been looking for a November 2017 discussion for a while and I'm so glad that I've found one.

Your little ones all look gorgeous, by the way! I'd love to know when people are thinking of weaning, too? I've been chatting with a few mum's of older babies and everyone seems to do it earlier than I thought, but I can't help myself from counting down the days until my daughter is 17 weeks! Help!

Zampa · 02/03/2018 09:44

I'm currently in bed watching Muppet videos on You Tube with my two. Have to venture out for our swimming lesson later - may take a Thermos flask with me!

Weaning is so much hassle I'm going to leave it as late as possible!

I can't remember when I started weaning DD1 but general guidance is that baby needs to be able to sit up with or without support. I think tongue control also improves around 6 months, making them less likely to poke food out on reflex.

Also, as babies get older, they are less likely to accept new tastes. Under 1, it can take 15 tries to accept a new food but far more as they grow. So make sure you introduce as many different flavours as possible, as early as possible.

DD1's SALT recommended holding the spoon side on to baby's mouth (like you drink soup) and then allowing them to take the food from the spoon, rather than placing the spoon into baby's mouth and "wiping" the food off as the spoon comes out. This doesn't teach them anything.

I weaned DS at 6 months and did baby led weaning. I'm planning on doing the same with Iris. I'd wait as long as you can as feeding milk is so much easier. I'd definitely recommend BLW, it's so easy particularly if you're out & about as they can just have a bit of what you're having.

We're pretty much snowed in. There was no way out of our village yesterday, all the roads were closed as the snow drifts were so bad. The local farmers have been out clearing the roads & they are currently passable but I'm not planning on going anywhere. We don't need to go out so not worth risking it although I am going stir crazy being stuck at home with 2 children, I haven't left the village since Sunday & only left the house on Tuesday to go to preschool!

Iris has only rolled once & that was on Wednesday. She's still not a huge fan of being on her playmat but she's getting better. She's only happy if you're lying on the floor with her though. Her favourite thing is watching DS so she's much happier in her bouncer where she can see him properly.

lydiangel83 · 02/03/2018 15:49

@Hazandduck good u have a nice GP, ours kept telling me it was wind and I knew it was silent reflux. I think the ranitidine is starting to not work as we are getting screaming episodes again :( will be on to the omeprazol soon :-/

lydiangel83 · 02/03/2018 15:56

Our weaning talk today was cancelled due to weather :(

theotherendofthesockportal · 02/03/2018 16:45

@lydiangel83 we are on the omeprazol and it has made a real difference to Bea. We are running low, and our pharmacy have told us there is delay in getting it in as it has to be turned into a liquid in County Durham and we are in the Midlands 😬 and the weather conditions do not look favourable

lydiangel83 · 02/03/2018 17:44

@theotherendofthesockportal yikes that's good to know thanks! Are u on the liquid? I was told u can only get that privately. The NHS version is tablets that u grind up apparently. Also how long did it take for it to work for Bea? And were u on ranitidine first? We came off ranitidine and gave her omeprazol for two days and it was awful so gave up and went back to ranitidine but had a few bad days now so thinking it's time to move on to omeprazol :-(

theotherendofthesockportal · 02/03/2018 20:30

@lydiangel83 yes it's a liquid, our pharmacy explained they send it to another pharmacy to be ground up and turned into a liquid. It has to be kept in the fridge. We noticed a difference within 48 hours.

We didn't try ranatadine, we went from gaviscon to omeprazol as it was over Christmas and the doctor said he didn't want to risk the ranatdine not working and ruining Christmas for us.

The only downside is that Bea hates the medication and cries when we give it her and she gets into a rage. It makes me feel like a horrible meanie. Roll on weaning!

theotherendofthesockportal · 02/03/2018 20:31

@lydiangel83 yes, it is nhs

DuRezidal · 03/03/2018 12:22

@Hazandduck we have been to Switzerland... the conditions have been incredible but I am so excited to get home to my tiny humans!

When is everyone starting weaning? I cannot believe J is now 4 months old!

Motherhippy16 · 03/03/2018 12:44

Hi all.... I am still here just read through everything.... sorry I haven't been on here a lot..... am finding bit enough time to breathe atm let alone do anything else! Ellis is nearly 12 weeks can't believe how quick it has gone. Experiencing similar situations to a lot of you. Meds for reflux, constant colic which stops him from having good sleeps in his cot in the day and sleeps a lot better upright on me or dh. He also hates the buggy and car seat.... have tried putting cushions in it so he is raised up and not flat (buggy not car seat!) Any suggestions would be great as hate going out with him! Although I didn't think I could love anyone so much! X x x x lots of love (quick post whilst managing to express!) X

theotherendofthesockportal · 03/03/2018 13:21

@Motherhippy16 the thing that saved our sanity was a swing. We couldn't afford a new one and bought it for £10 of Facebook market place. And spent a small fortune on batteries since.

Motherhippy16 · 03/03/2018 14:25

We have one but atm he only stays in it for 10mins max... can get him to have 20 mins in his bouncy chair when I have a shower and get breakfast. He likes to be at face height with everyone! Dh has just changed round the buggy so it's a sit up one.... he's taken him out so I have no idea if he's crying or not.... so want to text him to see if he's Ok! X

Hazandduck · 03/03/2018 18:47

Ah @motherhippy we just changed from the flat pram. Matilda likes being able to look around! It does get easier, gradually you find time to breathe again, although some days it doesn’t feel like it! Hope you’re ok Xxx

I second what @sock says, he bouncy chair means we can have dinner together at the table and not take it in turns most evenings! We’ve been eating off our laps for weeks when she was really tiny, but I hate it and much prefer sitting at the table so we are now being really strict and eating our meals there as often as possible because soon we will have Tildy sat with us in a high chair and I want her to know the sitting room isn’t for eating! Xxx

Hazandduck · 03/03/2018 18:51

@Durez, sounds lovely, my sister just got back from the French/Swiss border and I was so jealous, so she has promised me we will ski next year. We’re looking at Whistler. My parents have agreed to come and babysit for us while we ski as it is mine and DH’s thirtieths. I won’t say no 😄

Re weaning - I can’t wait either, I’m so excited for her to try things. DH held a bloody matchmaker under her nose this morning and she licked it! I nearly killed him lol. xx

butterybollocks · 03/03/2018 19:50

We are fed up of snow here. Been stuck in a lot this week as the pram wheels kept getting stuck in the snow. Freddie hasn't napped well and we've both gone a bit stir crazy. DD was off school yesterday because of snow so we had my mum over then had DD's friends over, then went sledging. Today I snow proofed the pram and pushed it down to the park while DD sledged down hills there. F has actually napped properly today after a bit of fresh air.

Motherhippy - Freddie basically cries in the pram or car seat unless he's tired or asleep. It's such a pain, especially as we have the school run to do twice a day. I just only go out at nap times or I put him in the sling. I'm hoping he'll be happier when he can sit up and look around.

I'm putting off weaning as long as possible as it's such a faff. I need a perfect prep machine for baby food where I can just press a button and it dispenses food.

lydiangel83 · 04/03/2018 17:03

@theotherendofthesockportal that sounds like a great doctor! Ours kept telling us it was wind and I knew it wasn't, have had to fight for gaviscon and then ranitidine - and went private as have insurance through work and got the omeprazol. I hope things get easier for you. I've also heard early weaning for reflux babies but it is convenient to breastfeed!

theotherendofthesockportal · 04/03/2018 20:00

@lydiangel83 sorry to hear that your doctor was so useless. I'm going to wean Bea once she can sit up in the high chair. She can sit unsupported for a couple of seconds now, I'm trying to encourage her as much as possible. Then this reflux nightmare will hopefully be over!

Thankfully the snow is now clearing, hopefully this means I can have a life this week!

izzibee29 · 04/03/2018 22:11

Thanks @Zampa for setting up a new chain- defo great to keep this going x

@butterybollocks must be something in a name as our Freddie is such a cheeky chap getting distracted when feeding too. Today we went to a sensory play glow party and mid feed during the party he flung us head back to watch some older kiddies fighting with glow sticks leaving my nipple etc totes on show haha

We rely on the white noise machine to help with sleep at night, only issue is I find the wave sounds make me sleepy too!!

DuRezidal · 05/03/2018 08:49

So last night I gave J a little bit of baby rice and he absolutely loved it!!!

DiscombobulatedWomble · 05/03/2018 09:57

DH decided to try & be helpful by loading & running the steriliser with this as a result! I know he means well but oh dear 🙈

What on earth is/was that Womble?

We had a terrible night here - Freddie has a cold and woke every 20 mins ish from 7.30pm to 5am. I think he managed two longer stints of 50 mins each Sad I am tired today and he's asleep on me so I can't have a nap.

DiscombobulatedWomble · 05/03/2018 11:38

Oh no @buttery it's awful when their sleep is disrupted. Sophia has started only napping on me, she wakes if I try to put her down so bang goes any chance of a daytime nap! Been like this for a couple of weeks, hoping she's back to normal soon!

It was a teething toy from her playmat! Now it is in the bin Grin
