Thought i would start the offical May 2007 thread as it is May and we have now had our first offical May baby - even though we have 6 naughty babies who queue jumped and arrived in April .

Probably be a while before there are many messages but a least we have a thread now

OP posts:

I have been given a rather lovely ring sling from a friend in NY but I just cant get the hang of it, are any of you good with slings if I bring it to the meet up can someone show me how to use it properly as I know it will make life so much easier, tubes buses etc.

BefnalNorkSnorkel · 20/06/2007 18:18

oooh - i've just bought a peerie on SOH's recommendation and it arrived today...am having same issue as got it on me then couldn't work out how to get a live wriggly thing into it - as soon as i got one part of her in, she'd managed to get it out again! by then was knackered and put her back in her car seat

BefnalNorkSnorkel · 20/06/2007 18:19

jw have emailed you my mob number... and where is the photo of your lo?

twelveyeargap · 20/06/2007 18:24

Juicy - all breastfed babies have runny nappies. Lots of A's nappies are practically completely liquid.

Let your nipples air dry where possible, rub some breastmilk into it and then lots of Lansinoh. (Kick me if you're doing all this already.) I presume you've tried the "rugby ball" under the arm hold? I found that was great because where my nips were really sore on one side, holding her the opposite way, effectively, meant her tongue was on the other side of the nipple and it didn't hurt quite so much. It does take quite a few goes to get them tucked under your arm in the right position though.

Oh and the other thing I kept "missing" when I was trying to get it sorted, was I was trying to stuff too much of the "upper" bit of areola in her mouth. The "rolling" the top of the nipple into her mouth with a flick of the thumb once her lower lip was around a big chunk of the "lower" bit of areola worked much better than making a "nipple sandwich" for her to latch onto. Does that make any sense, what I'm saying? Anyway - I found once she got a big bit of the areola in her lower lip, the top bit sort of followed.

You can do it!

was just in the process of re-sizing a pic of the boy wonder so I could download it. Tis on there now.

TYG you are on blinding form today

JL, when breastfed babies have diarrhoea it is all green, mucosy and stringy for several days. They can of course have green poop if you have eaten something particularly healthy, but it should go back to a lovely mustardy colour soon after. It is pretty unusual for an exclusively breastfed baby to get diarrhoea, tho saying that both mine had a bad bout at 6 weeks which I put down to living in the tropics.

As for bf babies taking the bottle, neither of mine ever did, they both rejected it from the start, with ebm or with formula, I ended up trying formula in an Avent sucky cup from about 4 months.Lucky for me they both were good sleepers so it still meant I could go and party and leave them with a sitter

BB - love the photo of Lauren, does she take after her mum?

largeginandtonic · 20/06/2007 19:09

Evening all

Am finding this parenting lark of 6 easy peasy, could be due to the fact that Beau has been asleep since just before 5! I have managed to feed them all and clean up, bath Hugs and tidy the house. He is still snoozing in his crib, just poked him to make sure he was still breathing

4 of them are out playing, it is so nice i dont want to bring them all in. It is a school night though, bad mommy moment #2 today.

I want some tea but just know as soon as i have got it cooking Beau will wake up and i will have to abandon it. I need a personal chef and a cleaner while im at it. In fact a wet nurse for the night feeds would be good too

Im sulking a bit.... i want to go to the meet up but would have to drive if i had all the children and really not sure i want to drive in to London with all 6. Is it central or outskirts? Would i be had for congestion charge?

Boobs tingling cos he hasnt fed for ages, it's like pins and needles. Ooooh i hear snuffles. I got measured for a bra yesterday as i kept getting blocked ducts where the bra cut in over the breast. Im a 34E, how ridiculous is that! Biggest i have ever been with any of them, he is a tubber though.

largeginandtonic · 20/06/2007 19:12

Only one of mine would not take the bottle, he wouldnt take anything else apart from booby till he was 16 months The others were good and would take both. Beau takes a dummy so im hopeful the bottle works out too, im going to get a breast pump this weekend i think, any suggestions? I used the medela ones in hosp when i had the twins, but huge mechanical beasts they were! I want a hand held size one.

cameroonmama · 20/06/2007 19:24

SOH, forgot to say, yes we went to Woolacombe on Sunday and it was such a lovely day, lovely beach and lovely company. It was a shame I couldn't boogy board though

Another thought, do you have a bouncy seat for M? I use mine loads, to put J down while i make some food, have a shower etc and move it round the house with me, so that he can be near me but I don't have to hold him constantly. He seems to be happy if he can hear my voice and see me.

AbbyLou · 20/06/2007 20:09

Can't really offer any more advice SOH, the ladies on here have said it all. It's lovely when you see so many women giving so much support with good ideas that are tried and tested. We all know every baby's different but it's so good to have people in a similar situation to use as a sounding board. I have been very surprised to be honest at how different 2 children produced by the same parents can be. Ds was the easiest baby ever, he fed, played and slept from about 5/6 weeks. R is a totally different kettle of fish. She is brilliant at night and i think she's actually pretty close to sleeping through but in the day she is a nightmare! She feeds really well but the rest is very hit and miss. She is rarely happy when awake but occasionally will sit and look around without crying. She rarely goes to sleep in the day and when she does it is in fits and starts. I think the only reason I am coping so well is that I am getting really good stretches of sleep at night. I've given in to my worst pet hate as well - a dummy. She is so sucky and it does calm her down but unfortunately I spend a large proportion of my time putting it back in.

BefnalNorkSnorkel · 20/06/2007 20:15

cm the apple doesnt fall far from the tree .

jw hes smashing! cant wait to meet him.

tyg i've got the avent isis uno which works for me - its £85 in boots or arond £50 on ebay second hand (needs sterilising ev. time anyhoo)

BefnalNorkSnorkel · 20/06/2007 20:21

soz, meant lgn't

Mrsjaffabiffa · 20/06/2007 20:21

I can't add anything more SOH, but I can agree with everything everyone else has said.
I am thinking of you and worried for you all. Wish I was nearer to be of some help.

TYG, your info on the types of cry is absolutely spot on and I was very guilty when I had H to presume he was hungry everytime he cried. Oh how I change that one when Maddie arrived. My general rule now is that if they are crying before 2.5hrs after last feed then try all other options for about 5 mins. Leave to cry, Nappie, Play time, sleep, If none of the them make any difference then I'll feed. Suprisingly it's usually, clean bum and in pram with a push round the drive that does the trick.

Mrsjaffabiffa · 20/06/2007 20:27

oh yes, I have the avent isis too. It's very good, I'm really pleased with it. Still only get about 2.5oz from each boob though. Wish i'd bought it in the UK, it cost me 149?

SOH you are a milking machine, can I have some of yours please.

ShowOfHands · 20/06/2007 20:40

Guess who's been asleep for 3 hours? DH put me to bed with lots of fruit and liquid in easy reach, settled M and tucked her in next to me once she was asleep and went back to work. He's just phoned to check on me and we've been asleep ever since. M is still asleep now. Jacket potatoes are in the oven, beans, tuna and cheese on standby, just hoping she stays asleep until it's ready.

TYG I will readily admit that I probaby do misread her cries at times but try and cover every eventuality before I offer her food. She does seem to follow the same pattern when hungry- starts by putting out her tongue and turning her head from side to side, turns into proper rooting, she then starts to grizzle, making a grumbly sound in her throat which escalates into the mad, insistent waah waah waah which I know is hunger. The other way of knowing is to lie her on my belly and if she's hungry she finds the nipple herself, if not she calms instantly. Usually she's hungry though. I have tried and tried to lengthen the time between feeds but to no avail. She has never gone more than 2hrs in the day and it's usually nearer an hour even on a very good day. I can jig her, soothe her, sing to her, bath her, push her in the pram, leave her alone, put her in her bouncy chair, give her to DH etc and it won't work, she gets angry and tired and then can't feed properly through exhaustion. She feeds for at least 20 minutes at each feed even if she only waits half an hour for it, is definitely getting hind milk and has lots of very bright yellow explosive nappies- probably 7 full dirty nappies a day and another 10 very wet ones on top of this. I talked to another mother at the clinic yesterday about how often she feeds and she said her 4.5 month old has only just started going 3hrs between feeds and is a very hungry bf baby. She described her behaviour and she could have been talking about M. Her solution to the tedious, ongoing, exhausting problem? Sky! MIL had four babies who were exactly the same and ended up with two rugby players, a professional ballet dancer and a triathlete. All of them eat enormous amounts and are extremely fit and active. Me, I'm more your sloth of a human, hung from a tree, idly scratching, reading a good book and wondering where my next gingerbread fix is coming from. This uncontrollable appetite is a very foreign concept. She even gets hungry in her sleep and wriggles over the bed to me, rooting away and latches on in her sleep. DH changes jobs mid-July so just have to get through the next few weeks.

I've started watching the most rubbish Two Pints of Redcoats and Jeremy Meets Trisha nonsense in the night just to while away the hours (can't focus on a book). It all melts into one and is all rubbish but have so far managed to avoid watching one second of Big Brother. When that happens I know I've reached rock bottom. I also sit for a long time in the wee small hours noting spelling errors on BBC News 24 with such glee. I even watched a 3am repeat of Countdown.

Got to go as oven just dinged. Mrs JB I still have coccyx trouble and am still sleeping on the floor instead of the bed. At least M can't roll off the floor I suppose. Still have mild carpal tunnel too.

Off to snaffle potatoes...

cameroonmama · 20/06/2007 21:04

Sounds like you are going to have your hands full with M SOH, if it makes you feel better, J can only really go for 2.5 hours max between feeds and 3 hours max at night. In between feeds however he is quite contented. Also I am going to put him in a cot in with ds1 soon, as i found when I did this with the other two at about 6 weeks they started sleeping for longer at night.

I wish I could join the meet-up but I too will be husband-less then and there would be noone to look after the two bigger dc. However if anyone is going to Glastonbury this week I am just down the road if you fancy a cuppa

Mrsjaffabiffa · 20/06/2007 21:19

SOH, I think you simply have an Olympic Champion on your hands. Just try as hard as it is to look after yourself, sounds like you have all areas covered now as best you can. I do feel for you though, all babies are differet but it also sounds like you've tried everything, she is obviously as you say just one hungry baby. bless!

We are always here for a chat if you feel like crap.

Sorry your cocyx is still bad too.

cinnamontam · 20/06/2007 21:34

TYG - you are amazing! What don't you know. My breastfeeding is going really well but I'm still picking up good pointers from your posts today that are making it even easier.

Changing positions is definitely a good one as it gives sides of the nipples a break.

scootermum · 20/06/2007 21:42

Hi all,

SOH Do you want a visitor?Im only 45 mins from Cambrdge hence cant be far from you? Will bring food...

You have all been chatty girls..cant catch up properly so suffice to say, hi to all..

DD1 still poorly, gaah!DD2 still being very good, touch wood..I have a bit of a chest infection now too but am dosing up and getting on with it..DH back at work today Mae and I went to Bumps and Babes whilst a friend very kindly offered to come and sit with Lily who was asleep so I could get out for a few hours..was starting to go crazy stuck in the house and Mae needed the fresh air..poor Lily though, cough, cough..

Will try to have a catch up with everyones news properly...have nothing on tomorrow except being Mummy so am going to try and get a bit of MNing in at some point..

Off to my bed now..Good lord I forgot how tiring this newborn baby business is!

Pebblemum · 20/06/2007 22:56

Evening ladies

SOH sorry to hear you have been having a tough time of it. I went through a similar thing with ds1 and i remember feeling so low, it does get better though. Glad dh was able to come home for a bit to give you a hand. Hope you get some rest tonight and things improve soon.

A has hardly had any sleep at all today. She slept from about 10-1pm but since then has only managed about 10mins. I thought she had finally gone off just now but i was wrong she is now laying on the front room floor gurgling away to herself. She is due another feed at midnight but if she is still awake at 11.30 then i will try to feed her early, hopefully she will be so tired by then that after her feed she will sleep right through. So much for babies sleeping all the time, A has always had a lot of awake time but today has been ridiculous!

I had her weighed again today and she is now 7lb 14oz so she has gained 4.5oz in a week. I cant believe she is a month old on Friday, it has gone so quick!!! I was comparing baby record books today and saw that when ds2 was the same age he weighed a hefty 9lb 4oz and yet he was 1oz lighter at birth. it just goes to show how babies differ. When he weighed the same as A does now he was only 2wks old

Oops A has now decided she's had enough of laying on the floor, she is not a happy little bunny (that will teach her not to sleep lol, she is now obviously over tired, oh joy) Better go

Juicylucytoo · 20/06/2007 23:59

Thanks TYG. MW is here tomorrow, so hope she will agree that it's ok. He had another nappy the same tonight. He's still feeding ok though, but won't go to sleep at the moment, but this seems to be his favourite time to be awake (based on yesterdays behaviour only, so could all change tomorrow!)

Pebblemum · 21/06/2007 09:08

Morning all

It is so quite in the Pebble household, makes a change. Ds1 has gone to school and ds2, A and Dh are all asleep. Its not been this peaceful in ages

Well A stayed awake for me to give her the last feed at 11.30, she was so tired though that it took an hour but it was worth it because she then slept through until 6.30, had a feed and fell straight back to sleep By the time i got to sleep I only managed 5hrs sleep but at least it was all in one go and not 2hrs here and there!!

It was so nice eating breakfast this morning with both hands free and both bobs safely tucked away lol. Since A has been born I think ive only managed one maybe two meals without having to feed her at the same time, it doesnt matter what time i decide to eat she always decides that shes hungry then too Even if i try to leave eating until she is fast asleep you can bet that as soon as ive finished making it she will wake up, im sure she has 6th sense, she seems to know when i sit on the loo or just get in the bath too

Hope everyone managed a few hours of peaceful undisturbed sleep last night and that all our babies let us have a bit of rest today especially SOH's M-your mummy needs it!

cinnamontam · 21/06/2007 11:06

Very quiet here as well. On MN I mean although it's pretty quiet in the CT household as well. Madam is sleeping having done 7.5 hours then 5....whooo hoooo

Off to London with my sister to sample the delights of Dickens House and St Pauls Cathedral

Have a lovely day all

x

Juicylucytoo · 21/06/2007 11:36

MW has been and gone. O has still not regained birth weight so he's not been discharged. Will have to feed him up for another check on Tues / Wed. She's told me to stop demand feeding and to feed every 3 hours for 45mins even if it means waking the baby up. Not sure how I feel about that and not sure how O will feel. Oh well, will give it a go.

BefnalNorkSnorkel · 21/06/2007 12:00

jl - are you eating enough? i am eating a pack of 4 scones a day/night as snacks & drinking a pint of water every hour! my gp told me to do that to keep the milk rich . no, really!

in that vein, off to wild cherry for a huge quiche and salad followed by chocolate gateaux and coffe. and i'vevonly just finished my second brekka!

wonder why those pounds aint shiftin!
