March 2017 babies

So my 9 day old baby boy was delivered by emcs at 37+5 gestation due to presenting breech (waters broke and contractions started). First baby so lots to learn!

Currently giving him expressed milk and formula topup. We tried breastfeeding but there was latch issues, he got very frustrated as he wasn't getting satisfied and my nipple was cracked and bleeding within a couple of days. I then got blocked ducts and the whole thing was a disaster really. I feel like a bit of a failure and did get help from bf clinic for the latch but it was little too late. With the c section recovery I just feel too exhausted to have him on the boob constantly and least with formula he is getting some decent sleep (although I'm usually expressing during this time so don't get a proper rest).

Oh and his fussy time is between 10pm -2am. He tends to feed and need winded on repeat between this time. It's exhausting but tonight I had a nap from 7-10pm in anticipation.

Come and join me for some chat...

Ladies please share your secret for sleeping through!!!

NameChange30 · 17/06/2017 09:28

There is no secret I'm afraid, it's just luck in our case!

If it's any consolation there is no way I can just put him down to sleep by himself, have to feed or rock him to sleep, day or night.

Carolann8584 · 17/06/2017 09:46

Well having thought about it, I did wake her at 1 for a feed so I could go to bed. Then she woke up at 4:30 crying put her dummy back in while I went to do her a bottle and when I got back upstairs she fell back to sleep then she woke again at 6am. I wonder if I just left her she would sleep through. I just get worried if she hasn't had a feed for hours and hours that she's too weak to wake up for one. Especially as she's still got the pox

purpleviolet1 · 17/06/2017 10:12

Carolann I think whilst she has pox it's wise to get milk into her as you are doing.

No secret but I Do think it's
combination of getting enough milk into them during the day (I used to try to do 4 hourly feeds but now if he appears hungry after 3 I just give him it), not too much daytime sleep but not too little either and ultimately I guess when they are ready they will just do it!

I read somewhere they need to take around 30-35oz during the day to be able to sleep through.

Congrats purple 🔑! Also nice one Carol with the sleep 😴 x

NameChange30 · 17/06/2017 11:05

My DS is a good eater (at 8kg he's hardly going hungry Grin) so maybe that helps him to sleep at night. He doesn't always sleep through though - far from it.

Carolann8584 · 18/06/2017 06:39

Just had a full nights sleep!!

DD slept from 6pm til 8pm then had a feed. Put her back down and she slept straight through til 6AM! Woke once in the night for her dummy and that's it!! So so proud of my little lady. She is still her little smiley bubbly self this morning

NameChange30 · 18/06/2017 07:43

Woohoo, congrats Carol! Smile

purpleviolet1 · 18/06/2017 10:31

Aw that is so good Carol!! Grin

Ds not feeding well at moment, he just chews the teat and cries. Think the gums are bothering him. He only having as much milk as he really has to , maximum at one time he is having 3oz. Such a pain coz the milk can't be kept

Aw your poor DS. If his gums are hurting you could put teething gel on before a feed, or use faster and/or softer teats?

Carolann8584 · 18/06/2017 18:12

purple what bottles are you using? I have avent and tommee. Both with number 1 teats I found the tommee ones to be a lot softer and have a slightly faster flow. I use them in the evening so it's easier for DD might help you DS get a bit more down in a short amount of time.

If I use a faster teat ie number 2 she gets in a mess and eats too faster so has trouble with stomach and wind pains.

purpleviolet1 · 19/06/2017 00:57

Thanks for your help. I've got the chamomila granules and today bought bonjela teething gel. Both aren't really helping. Been searching on MN and it appears anbesol liquid and ibuprofen are the best. Every feed has been a battle 🙄 really dreading feed times. And because he's only managing it when very hungry I'm
Constantly trying him wth the milk and it's stressful Sad only just got on top of the reflux and milk allergy....

Carol we have the dr brown bottles with the number 3 teat which is pretty fast. This is because the milk is thickener to help with the reflux.

DD has definitely shown signs of teething, only started affecting her feeding today so will pop out when she wakes for some supplies. This morning I wrapped my finger in a muslin square and she had a good chew on it Grin

purpleviolet1 · 19/06/2017 12:20

Thanks ladies. It doesn't seem to be affecting him otherwise. Just the feeds..

How is everyone ? I have been in Greece for 8 nights now with lo and I can honestly say she has been as good as gold and I worries over nothing !

purpleviolet1 · 20/06/2017 20:18

Aw wow mother!! That's absolutely great.

We are doing ok thanks, for anbesol for the gums and used it once. Thankfully he has been feeding better today. The rash is less and the diarrhoea isn't too bad.

Going to last baby massage class tomorrow Smile also house shopping!

Mother
Hurrah, glad baby is doing well and you're having a good time! I wonder if it's hotter in England or Greece atm... I guess you probably have air con in Greece! We're boiling here Confused

purple
Glad your DS is doing better Smile Good luck with the house hunting!

This weather is making me think that we really MUST sort out our barren wasteland of a garden Sad I've said that every day throughout every summer since we moved in!

MotherofA · 21/06/2017 07:47

That's so exciting purple !
I have heard all about it name I'm so looking forward to house work and cooking in this heat argh!

NameChange30 · 21/06/2017 09:26

Has anyone been using MAM or NUK bottles?

I'm mostly breastfeeding but also expressing so DH (and others) can feed DS occasionally. Up until recently DS has taken the bottle - with the Avent natural teat - but he's been refusing it lately Sad Confused I think it could be teething related so I'm looking into bottles with softer teats, either MAM because they are supposedly softer silicone, or the NUK latex teats. Has anyone used either of those? Or got any suggestions for a teething breastfed baby?!

I'm panicking at the thought of him refusing a bottle completely Sad

MotherofA · 21/06/2017 16:24

I haven't breastfed this time but have used Dr Browns bottles which have good reviews . Good luck Smile

Carolann8584 · 21/06/2017 18:24

Hi ladies

purple and mother glad things are getting easier 😁

huge I noticed that when changing my DDs bottles, I tried her with TT last week, she's had avent since birth but noticed she was having her full feeds so tried her with TT as the #1 teat has a faster flow than avent but she couldn't get the hang of them as avent teats are quite hard. This week I tried her on #2 teats for avent and she's slowly getting the hang of them, bit messy to start with but at least she's having a good 5oz each feed. I got Ashton & Parsons sachets for help with her teething, only given her 1 dose a day so far, it says twice a day on the packet but she's doing better on just 1.

Carolann8584 · 22/06/2017 20:28

That was meant to say Wasn't having full feeds.
