we live quite near a village called Thong in Kent
That's really interesting Marls about everyone using jars in the US. I'm doing a mixture. I take it the babies move on to food that we eat quite easily over there? At what age do you start giving them what you eat? Over here we're often told if you give jars they won't eat 'normal' food as toddlers but ds had a mixture too and eats just about everything

Coriander73 · 05/04/2007 10:02

Hey all

Well day 4 & am feeling slightly better than day 1..! I had my appeal yday which seemed to go a lot better than the first meeting but I still am convinced they'll find a loophole & get out of offering me anything. The atmosphere isn't great & a lot of people are naturally worried about their positions since the takeover last year. I doubt very much that the position I hold will exist this time next year but I am NOT willing to stick around & find out.

DD is still sick. Threw up this morning & has a high temp. J is feeling sorry for himself too as he's teeting so badly. DH is out home today with them (he confessed yday that isn't it hard being with the two of them on your own..the washing, the changing, the entertaining...so I asked him whether he could be a SAHD..he replied with a very emphatic NO!!) then I have the Easter break with them...I really can't wait...yippee!!
Marls, I too make all J's food as I did with DD. I just like being in control of what is going into their tummies! Not to say I don't have emergency back up jars! They do have a purpose, esp. if travelling etc but on the whole 99% of the time it's homemade. I was going to try a spag bol tm with J...is it OK for them to have beef now? He's 29 weeks on Sat...just can't remember! He still wont do purees so it's sort of BLW but I'm finding it, at this stage, much harder ( I love Annabel karmel!!) but perhaps in the long run it just means he'll be eating proper food quicker than DD?...pfffff.....

Mabel, LOL at evil Richard!!!!!

mabel1973 · 05/04/2007 11:00

Hi all

what a gorgeous day!

i need to find that website...there are some really strange place names round here!

I am taking DS1 to the dentist this afternoon - I am not looking forward to it, it is his 1st time, I have struggled to find an NHS dentist since we moved here nearly 2 years ago, so i hope he will be ok.

Marls - i also make all my own food for ds2, i have a couple of friends who used jars, one was working full time and the other just couldn't be bothered I think a lot of people do use themover here ( i keep a few in the house for when we're out) but there is alot on tv over here about how badly children eat and I think that there is alot of pressure on parents (rightfully so) to feed there children more healthily which means cooking proper meals.... i guess alot of it stems from that. plus it is very expensive to use jars all the time.

Coriander73 · 05/04/2007 11:31

Has anyone actually tasted jars?! Even the more organic stuff just has a very plastic taste...there's is no way they can complete with homemade food I am convinced that as a result of cooking most of DD's food she eats very well & enjoys a range of tastes (loves garlic & parmasean cheese!) etc. I have a good friend who exclusivly ( I kid you not) fed her DS jars - the result of which is that he is a terrible eater & wont eat normal foods that she now trys to cook for him.

clairemow · 05/04/2007 11:39

Cori, we have the same friend. I too have a friend who weaned both her children on jars alone. Neither of them eats well, they won't eat spag bol or even a banana! I don't know if it's because of exclusive use of jars, but not going to risk it!!

Marls, this is not an attack on you at all (after the PF episode..!!) - maybe the jars you can get are better than here where most of the contents seem to be water and glupe? I have seen some Babylicious tubs that are all fresh ingredients etc. but they cost the earth, and it's easier to steam a carrot!

OP posts:
Coriander73 · 05/04/2007 12:17

Have you seen those new plum baby food pots? They cost £1.99 each!!!!!! All very nice & exciting combinations etc & they're packaged extremely (or rather marketed!) well but goodness me, like you say Clairemow, easier just to steam the carrot & parsnip & voila you have the same as plum baby but at a fraction of the cost Why do people fall for it?

Not even a banana??!

clairemow · 05/04/2007 13:49

I know. Weird. But they came to our house for play one morning, and I offered a snack of some banana. They wouldn't eat it - too lumpy??!! Mind you, bet a doughnut wouldn't be too lumpy...!!!

We digress. Go to here to enter your post code and have a laugh at the rude places near you...

I'm 39.2 miles from Wet Pits. Lovely.

compo · 05/04/2007 15:52

Ah you see ds was fed a mixture and he loves garlic and parmesan So you can never tell... And I have tasted the jars - the banana custard is yum

compo · 05/04/2007 15:53

p.s. ours is Pett Bottom

Coriander73 · 05/04/2007 15:58

compo, I give you that the pudding options inevitably taste rather scrummy....it's all that sugar!!! I've just eaten a Mars...I'm having my penultimate session with the trainer tonight so thought, oh what the hell! - can you tell I bored & demotivated at work today?!!

compo · 05/04/2007 18:44

I'm starting to feel guilty now. Can people post their most successful reipes on here perhaps. Thanks

clairemow · 05/04/2007 19:01

oh now, recipes. Good idea. Well, apart from steaming veg (very dull!) and mixing them up, F likes spaghetti bolognese (I just take some of ours out for him), roast chicken and veg, squash and apple. To be honest, I haven't done any special recipes for him really, he has a portion of whatever veg I've cooked for everyone else and a portion of the protein if it's suitable. I don't think I'd give him a bit of rump steak for example! Or a chicken tikka masala! The other week he really went for salmon with some pear mixed up with a spoonful or two of Covent Garden leek and veg soup. It smelt really leeky so I wasn't sure he'd like it, but he gobbled it up mega quick.

We're only 15 miles from Dancing Dicks. Woohoo! I make all my own baby food too. I just like to know exactly what is going into DSs tummy! We sometimes use the odd jar, if we're out and about and I've forgotten to take things out of the freezer. As for recipes, I am a fan of Annabel Karmel. DS seems to love all her recipes, but I do try just to give him some of whatever we're having. DH and I are going to get fatter and fatter though. I made cauliflower cheese the other night using full fat milk and cheese. Something I'd never usually do. Skimmed milk for me normally. Having said that, I've found myself using fewer packets and jars. I make things more from scratch so that we can all have the same so, in that way, our diet has improved.

On that note, Cori, I gave DS beef for the first time today. I think they can have it from six months onwards. He loved it!

Think the teeth are on their way. Dribbling very much, sore bottom, touching his ears a lot. Nothing popping through though.

Beautiful day here, too. Hope it continues over the weekend. DH had afternoon off work so we went for a walk along the seafront. Bliss.

compo · 05/04/2007 22:15

thanks Bristols and Clairemow. Do you blend whatever you give or are your lo's onto lumpier food now?

liquidclocks · 05/04/2007 22:59

Yayyyy! I got m'broadband back!

(and my evening has been made so much better having found out I live just 25 miles from Randy Pike )

You're all such avid typers, too much o catch up on so give me a few days...

Missed y'all though! [liquid wipes tear from eye]

Marls001 · 06/04/2007 03:32

Welcome back Liquid!!

Wow and ... I've just checked all our jars for ingredients ... relieved to find nothing listed but food (i.e. "apples and blueberries" is "apples, blueberries.")... DS1 also had jars! Each 4 oz jar costs about 40 cents (approx. 0.2 pounds). There are organic versions as well, not much more expensive.

I agree babies' preferences are set early! DS1 likes all the basics, eats healthily & gets his food groups - but he usually eats separate food from DH and me - more hot dogs, lunch meat, cheese sticks, peas, fruit ... less salmon, chicken, asparagus I might happen to cook.

(Sisters & I also fed jars as babies. I won't eat salty/bready/cheesy foods, but middle sister cooks v. well & youngest has been immersed in foreign culture & luckily adapted.)

Most of what we all eat is grab-and-go, not cooked; I only just learned to cook since we moved here (where there isn't even Chinese delivery) from Houston where we bought ready-made meals or had delivery ... I can do a few good dishes now though

Shopped today! After got back down to my old size, have kept on losing. Everything's too loose!! Perhaps it's my cooking!

compo · 06/04/2007 16:27

Marls - how do you live without Chinese takeaway?!!

bristols · 06/04/2007 19:00

Hello Liquid! Was wondering where you'd been!

Can't believe how cheap the jars of food are in the states. They're about 50-60p here. Minimum. And most of them do contain other things apart from just food IYSWIM. Additives, colourings etc.

I have been blending DSs food, but now I tend to mash it, or blend it for less time. He had fish pie tonight (Bristols family good friday tradition) and I just gave it to him as it was. He makes me laugh because he chews the lumps and it looks so funny. Also looks a bit like my FIL who also has no teeth

Beautiful day here. Went to see my friend's new baby. EIght days old and gorgeous. So tiny! We're off to visit some friends in London tomorrow so looking forward to that. Haven't been to London since DS was born and can't wait. Love the hustle and bustle, the culture etc etc. Although I wouldn't want to live there. Mush prefer being beside the seaside, beside the sea.

Think the sun has gone to my head! Off for a glass of wine. Well, it is the weekend....

Enjoy!

calvemjoe · 07/04/2007 15:55

I live 30 miles away from Titty Ho! I'm at work, the team has completely changed since I left so I don't know anybody and I'm sitting here alone lmao Thanks mumsnet.

Cori, I hope DD is better now and work is improving for you. Are you planning on leaving?

Myrtle, 7pm is my goal every day, I need to make it in one peice and I'm definatly exhausted by then. Baby swimming is really good. Elizabeth has been going since 6 weeks and she loves it. Especially if you have a phobia of water, it'll allow you to be confident with your children.

Fairy, I can't believe how rude the other mothers were at baby yoga . I must admit I go to no mother and baby groups cause I'm too chicken to walk in

Marls, I make all my own food too, apart from the occasional pudding, but my main reason is because we simply can't afford to buy the jars.

I'm not having a very good day at work. I left my darling lo with my mil, calpoled up and truly miserable because her 3rd and 4th teeth are not playing nice. I just want to be at home having delicous baby cuddles. Other than that we are all well. Elizabeth is using a combination of rolls and comando crawls to get her chubby little hands on whatever she desires bless her (usually ds1's toy cars) and she'll munch on apple and biscuits but leave the smallest lump in anything pureed and she gags like crazy bless her.
I went shopping on weds to spend my birthday money and I'm (are you ready for this) a size 8. I haven't been a size 8 since I was 15

bristols · 07/04/2007 21:11

Calv - Size 8???? You lucky, lucky thing. The world's your oyster with your birthday money. I could only dream of being so lovely and svelt....

Went to visit my best friend today. Had a fantastic day. She announced she's pg! She's already had her first scan and its all so exciting. A bit of a shock for them but they're happy about it all. Have begged her to take me pram shopping with her!

Hope everyone's having a lovely weekend

mabel1973 · 07/04/2007 22:14

20 miles from butt hole lane...
will check in again when i get chance ....

Coriander73 · 07/04/2007 22:27

Hmmm...I know I can share this with you How likely is is that on day 14 (yday) of a regular 28 day cycle that I could be pg after having bf last night...with a condom but only put on at the end so to speak?!!........ooppsss....

mabel1973 · 08/04/2007 10:47

hmmmm - not likely???? I really don't know - not the best person to ask! I have no idea about my cycles etc, haven't had AF since being pg...

anyway - happy easter!!!!
we are having egg hunt this afternoon, with all the children on our crescent - followed by bbq - lovely!

Anyone else put their lo's in forward facing car seat?
We put Ds in one last week, his head was hanging out the top of his bacwards one and the straps were digging in bless him - he seems so much more comfy and loves sitting the same way as DS1 in the back of the car.
