I still clusterfeed

margo1974 · 04/02/2007 23:18

re swaddling

I have been using a swaddle fleece which has velcro fastenings so is fairly idiotproof... anyway, bought a swaddleblanket from John Lewis which said came with swaddle instructions and cost me £18. When I opened it, it was just a big sheet and I must be thick, because I follow the instructions and it still doesn't work. Are any of you actual swaddle experts?

It's loose at the top, which is exactly the bit where you need it to be snug.

Currently kicking myself for buying it and not looking at the packaging before purchasing and opening it

northernmama · 05/02/2007 04:45

oh dear god all....haven't been able to check the thread....

for all of you whose little ones had bronchiolitis... holy shit!!

we've just been released from hospital after a bout with that nasty virus RSV...bronchiolitis... poor little Kirsten was SOOO very sick, and I was damn near scared to death.... and I'm a nurse to boot.

Haven't had a moment to "catch up" in the last 2 weeks, but will try to zip thru to see what the general topics of concersation have been.... must go try to collect my house, and do about 15 loads of laundry!

NM

northernmama · 05/02/2007 04:50

How long is maternity leave in the UK? From the conversations, it seems as if it's only 12 weeks long... is that true? 3 months seems so short, I'd hate to tell you how long I get here in Canada...

jabberwocky · 05/02/2007 04:52

OMG, NM, we were wondering where you were. That is so frightening. I'm glad she's better. We have gotten so paranoid about illness that we are keeping ds1 home from Mother's Day Out, probably for all of Feb.

Ds2 having odd night. Clusterfeeding and just won't settle

northernmama · 05/02/2007 04:56

Hey milkshake... have you tried saline nose drops? It's a little nasty to shoot up their noses, but helps them to sneeze hard and get all that yicky stuff outta there.

northernmama · 05/02/2007 04:59

I was wondering why the heck you're on so early Jabber! Thanks, I cannot believe how sick she wa. Sorry to hear your
lo won't settle tonite.

jabberwocky · 05/02/2007 05:15

I'm on your time NM

Just gave him some gripewater. Haven't needed that for a while. bouncing lots too.

northernmama · 05/02/2007 05:20

DH just finished putting DD1 & DS down... it's after 10:00 pm now and I really do have 15 loads of laundry...that'll get done tomorrow. I haven't had any me time in 10 days, so i'm going to hang out here for a little while!

Jabber, where are you from?

jabberwocky · 05/02/2007 05:21

I'm in Tennessee, central time.

Where in CA are you?

northernmama · 05/02/2007 05:33

Alberta, I think that's central time too. It's nice to know that there's someone out there who is not 7 hours ahead of me. It's sometimes hard to find time to log on when the UK'ers aren't asleep!!!

northernmama · 05/02/2007 05:35

Finally have put baby down too... eerie, everyone's asleep and the TV isn't on...DH going off to bed now as he's exhausted, and recommends that I do too. D'you think that means I look that bad????

northernmama · 05/02/2007 05:54

Heading off to bed now... no hope of catching up on my sleep, but will try to make this night a good one!!

Hope to catch up with everyone over the next week or so.

Jabber - I hope you LO settles and you get a few good hours.

Kirsten gave me her first smile in hospital... when I put her in her carseat to go home! How's that for irony No one believes she can smile already -- she's already 6 weeks old!

Tomorrow off to the OBS for 6 week follow up -- birth control here I come!!! ( as if the massive tantrums of my 2 year old weren't enough!)

satinshoes · 05/02/2007 08:53

worst night yet. i had really thought we were getting somewhere and th its like we go backwards

castlesintheair · 05/02/2007 08:56

How old is your LO satinshoes? DD2 is nearly 10 weeks now and is more settled but until a few days ago I'd still have a few good nights then a bad one.

Northernmama, sorry to hear about your LO. December does seem to be a truly awful time to have a baby health-wise. Pity we can't plan for summer babies, I couldn't anyway

LowFatMilkshake · 05/02/2007 09:37

NM - poor DD hope she is over the worst now!

Yep I am using saline drops (I feel a meany doing it, but I think he cries more because I am holding his head than the aste and feel of them!) and decongestant. DS is find during the day but it's atnight or after a sleep that he has the snuffles.

This week is the start of my new organised, slimming - spending less me! Got up at 6.15am, changed DS bum while DD got dressed, swaddled him and we had a wash came down to feed him and DD have breakfast then get dressed myself whilst putting away the laundry, tidied kitchen while eating one handed. All done and ready for pre-school by 8am! Come home, do dishes, prepare tonights veg and get DS dressed in new very cute Pumpkin Patch dungarees. So here I sit chatting to you - I am sure I could find other thinsg to do, but hey DH wont belive I was so organised and will think I did good anyhow!

DS playing happily on his gym, watching Narnia - well okay I am watching Narnia, but he likes it too!

satinshoes · 05/02/2007 09:40

Castles. D was 8 weeks on Saturday. She is of course sleepng like an angel now Not sure what the problem as but she woke at 6 pm and hd 2 catnaps for 25 mins between then and 3am. It was soo hard. She wasnt screaming or anything just wide awake and hungry.

Milkshake. well done. I had the same thought and did a meal plan for the week before I did my online Tesco shop last night. Have saved a bit of money by being organised.

DD1 now at pre-school and DD2 asleep so plan to try and tidy the ombsite wich used to me my nice house in a minute.

satinshoes · 05/02/2007 09:41

ps NM - glad DD is on the mend. Scary

jabberwocky · 05/02/2007 11:46

Okay, just when you think they have settled into a good sleep pattern...worst night in a looooong time here, I can't imagine what was going on w/ ds2. I should have been suspicious when he started the ferocious clusterfeeding. He'll be 11 weeks on Wed. Vould it be an early growth spurt? I think the do have one at 3 months,

NM, yes it's nice to have someone in the same time zone. Moaning in real time is helpful I've only been to British Columbia. Is it utterly freezing atm where you are? We are having godawful cold snap here right now.

Baileys, I really need to start slimming and organizing, too. My last 5 pounds are all at my waist!

babypowder · 05/02/2007 12:29

NM, so glad to hear from you, and that your LO is doing well again. Must be so scary. It's so odd that you're in AB - I still read the Edmonton Journal (and various small town papers and occasionally a Calgary paper)online, so I still feel like an Albertan!

We can take up to 12 months matty leave, but we only get statutory pay (£100ish a week) for the first 6 months. What's it like in Canada? I suppose I always think we're spoiled compared to you with annual leave (I get 6 weeks holiday a year, and still think I'm hard done by ), so I supposed that matty leave would be the same.

babypowder · 05/02/2007 14:03

As you know, DD2 is a bit of a sight to behold, what with being jaundiced and spotty. And, to top it all off, she now seems to have cradle cap between her eyebrows. Poor wee mite. I'm putting lashings of Kamillosan on it (I use it for everything now!)
We're back at the hospital tomorrow for DD2s thyroid tests. The thyroid test they did at the same time as the PKU is normal - surely there won't be a problem [hopeful mother emoticon]

castlesintheair · 05/02/2007 15:33

Good luck with the test Babypowder.

My DD2 is a bit "spotty" too. Does anyone know why that is?

I can't believe it (Victor Meldrew voice) I have been trying to get an appointment all day for the GP and have just been told to "ring back tomorrow" This is DS's 2nd week off school now and it is getting ridiculous. I'm starting to wonder if it is the mould which we recently discovered in the (built-in) wardrobe in our bedroom Is it my post-natal panic-hormones or can this really make you sick? I rang the enviromental health department and they didn't sound in the least bit interested.

satinshoes · 05/02/2007 15:57

hi there, we have spots and dry skin on eyebrows too.

Spots are down to hormones. A bit like teenage acne and they should go in a few weeks.

I've been using oilatum on the eyebrows and it seems to be helping.

margo1974 · 05/02/2007 16:13

#DD2 is spotty too, I also think it's a slight reaction to other peoples clothes and the chemicals in their washing powders

Indith · 05/02/2007 16:57

swaddling for margo

Place a cot sheet in front of you short side towards you. Fold down the top right hand`corner a bit and place baby with neck over fold so feet point towards opposite corner. Fold right side of sheet over and tuck under baby. Fold bottom up, folding over up to feet thn up to chin (or howver many times you need depnding on sheet and baby size). Then fold right hand side over and wrap around the baby nice and tight.
