Thought I had better start a new thread as the old one was about to crash

Happy 30th B'Day kbaby Wish I was 30 again but then I suppose I wouldn't even be married let alone have a house to live in or my 2 precious children. Whoops-going all sentimental now, better go!

Taking DD1 to her dance class Christmas Party so got some sarnies to be getting on with.

Happy Sunday

Beadmum-can't remember if Charlotte is your first but I went through all these feelings after DD1 was born. My MIL never worked again after having her 2-my mum had 10 years off so it was only my mum saying give it a go then you can leave if you don't like it. MIL did ask if I had thought about going back (I think secretly, mum and MIL wanted me to work so they could childmind). Well, I went back but to a different Branch of the Bank and stuck it 2 months. Left and took auxillary work with the Bank. I always said after 2 children I wouldn't be going back and DH agreed but now he is pressuring me to work at his place (for his dad as it is his company). I am like you and don't know what to do. I missed DD1's first steps but luckily it was when she was with my mum or I would have never heard the last of it if it was at MIL's! I have to make a decision in April and that time is fast approaching. Feel free to dicuss this because it really is a soul searching thing in my opinion. Whatever you choose, you can always change later on and you certainly are not awful if you go back. I mentioned to my boss that if I went back I want to work 10am-2-30pm x 2 days a week which I'm hoping my manager will say no to then the decision is made. By the way, what possessed you to let Charlotte stay over at you PIL ??????????? MIL's do v. annoying things like saying they have done things when they haven't-ggggrrrrrhhhhh!!!!!

Kosh-I love knitting. Another therapeutic thing I do.

Ceebee-hope things go OK for you today.

Hi to everyone else. Sophie suffering with her cold today so better go and wipe her nose-again!

Catch y'as later!

hi ladies

agalch- hope eilidh is better today

kbaby- hows your first week so far?

regarding work, i was happy going back early as i really needed time to socialise with adults as i havent got friends living near me. and it also allows dp and his mum to spend more time with the kids as they work long hours. his mum and i get on very well and luckily she's not interfering nor does she like to gloat

and... juniors first tooth is starting to cut through!! for the first time ever he wont let me feel his gums!

cant talk too long, have a houseful of mess which i'm gonna force myself to do!

have a nice after all

prettymum · 24/01/2007 12:54

was meant to write have a nice afternoon all x

ImpyChica · 24/01/2007 13:58

Good luck on the back-to-work decisions HC and Beadmum. I reckon if you don't like your job and you don't have to go back for financial reasons then don't feel pressurised into returning... It is a tricky one though. I've gone back part time because I want to keep my foot on the career (tiny step) ladder so to speak and also enjoy my job and have good friends there. Babies are small for such a short time, I'm glad that I get the afternoons with Ryan - otherwise I'd hardly see him.

How's weaning and or BLW going for people? Ryan's great at feeding himself - he chomps on celery sticks (great for teething) and satsuma segments. The nursery gives him mixed veg puree in the mornings and he HATES it! He vomited it all up this morning apparently.... I tried to explain about BLW to his carer but they're a wee bit behind such things here in Spain....

Good 'arbo to you all. Impy

Lysettes · 24/01/2007 15:57

hi just adding to the debate on going back to work - we are pretty sure i am not going to go back to my present job. originally we were definitely thinking i would after 6 months, and even booked a place at nursery for jacob! then as he was 8 weeks early we started thinking about going back after a year, but both my mum and MIL are putting pressure on us to decide not to go back, at least till jacob is around 18 months. I am very lucky that dh earns enough that we are ok without my wage, so we don't have a teribly difficult decision in that sense, but I don't have much adult contact and wonder if that's going to affect me badly long term! of course I know nothing measures up to being at home with LO's, so I know how lucky we will be!

weaning going well although we tried broccoli for the first time today and didn't really like it! banan on the menu for tea time tonight - we'll see how that goes down!

agalch · 24/01/2007 17:05

Hi girls

Just a quick one.Have just come back from the childrens ward. Phoned the surgery and insisted the jobsworth rottwieller give me an appt for both dd's.She wasn't happy but saw sense when i got lippy

Sent straight down to see pead who has diagnosed bronchilitus(sp).very common and as long as she is bfing/got wet nappies and her breathing isn't too laboured we can stay at home.

Will just keep a close eye on her.Nurse showed us how to give her calpol etc.

1.Wrap tightly in towel

2.Squirt 2mls of calpol into cheek at back of mouth

3.Blow gently into babys face and baby draws in breath, chokes and has no option but to swallow.

Needs must eh?

Oh and doc checked dd1 who does have a chest infection so she has ab's but she will ake them thank goodness.

have a good night all xx

FirstAtForty · 24/01/2007 17:55

Good news that you got to the paed Agalch, broncholitis, yuk Hope both girls start to feel much better very soon xx

UsandBump - how is Zack now?

Not much to report here, Emma still coughing, up at 12.30, 2 and 5 again last night (yawn) - luckily not a work day today.

Re work, it's so hard to generalise isn't it. What works for one person doesn't work for another - you have to just take into account your circumstances and go from there. I work with several other mums with young babies/children and they all felt really different about returning to work and have coped with it in different ways. I suppose the pluses of returning when they are this age are that for some people it's easier to get back into work as it's not too long since you left, also 6 months is an easier time to settle babies in childcare as they are not too fussy about strangers yet. Then again it's also a difficult time too as it coincides with weaning and you have worries about expressing etc if you are bf. How you feel about the job you are going back to is also going to have a big effect, if you hate it then you will resent leaving your lo even more. Ditto childcare, if you're not 100% happy with your childcare arrangements then it would be very stressful. And if you're not getting much sleep then any job is going to be a nightmare to cope with! God I don't know - I haven't come to any great conclusions myself, wish I could! Well enough woffling from me - have good nights all
xx

Ceebee74 · 24/01/2007 19:29

Evening all - just a quickie tonight as I am shattered!

Work went much better than expected today. Josh was absolutely fine at nursery, they commented on what a lovely mood he had been in all day, he slept twice (which was 2 more times than I was expecting ), and ate all his purees - which is much more than he does with me! As for work, by lunchtime, it felt like I had never been away (and that is not exaggerating) - so weird!! Have to agree that it is a difficult decision to make about going back - for us, it was a toss up between being able to afford come nice things for Josh (ie holidays, etc) or really really tightening the purse strings and me staying at home - as it is, I am only working 3 days so I get more days with him than without him and we can still have some luxuries - but everyone and their circumstances are different and you can only make the decision that feels right for you.

the only hiccup of the day was that I was all ready this morning at the time I was aiming for and me and Josh had our coats on ready when I smelt that dreaded smell coming from Josh's bottom - delayed us 10 minutes and so I subsequently hit traffic and was half an hour late - great start eh?

Agalgh - hope that Elididh manages to keep some ab's down with this new method and she gets better soon.

Lysettes - tried Josh with broccoli yesterday - you would have thought it was bitter lemon with the face he pulled - not impressed! Thought I might send some to nursery tomorrow as they seem to be able to feed him better than me!

Hi to everyone else - will try and catch up with your messages as soon as I can.

So much for it being a quickie eh??

Have a good night x

Beadmum · 24/01/2007 20:05

HC - yes, charlottes my first but it doesnt sound like the decison to go back to work gets any easier its good to hear other mums thoughts on this but its true everyone and their situation is different, definitely lots of soul searching to do and Im beginning to wonder why we let pil look after charlotte, just thinking about mil makes me just now, we normally get on quite well but they used to live hundreds of miles away and decided to move back in the summer as they were wanting to be closer since they are now grandparents but think i see too much of them now oh well said it now guess pil are there to test you huh

agalch - good you seen a paed, poor eilidh, hope shes feeling better soon

first - hope you have a better night tonight

ceebee - glad work went well

lysette & ceebee - how weird. i tried charlotte with brocolli yesterday and she too was not impressed, thought it would maybe go down better if mixed with another veg so going to try that soon

have a good night ladies xx

Lysettes · 24/01/2007 21:50

agalch you poor thing - big hugs to you and the girls!

tried the broccoli mixed with sweet potato and it still didn't work! and talking of strange combinations - didn't someone have avocado and apple - we tried kiwi this evening and ended up having that with sweet potato - and he loved it! just raw ripe pureed kiwi . jacob's also really into yoghurt, which is great, although he does manage to get it eveywhere with all his drool!

totally understand about pil - mine visited for 6 weeks when jacob was 6 weeks old - i could have happily strangled them by the time they left - my fil was particularly troublesome and appeared to think i was incapable of doing anything without my mil there

lol everyone and take care tomorrow morning it's supposed to be very icy!

HumphreysCorner · 24/01/2007 22:22

agalch-good on you girl for putting your foot down. Hugs to you and your family. ((xx))

Ceebee-glad today was OK for you.

Mum has told me not to go back to work today. Girls-how difficult all this is.

It is official-Sophie is now teething and this is why she has been waking up in the night lately and being wittery with her cold. She has rosy cheeks too-bless.

Have been invited out for the day on Sunday with.....................the In-Laws!!!!!!! Oh joy! Must get the valium on standby.

Night all

Yes, me - Aidan loves avocado, apple and baby rice - had it again tonight. Tried sweet potato, swede and broccoli today at lunchtime (trying to hide the green stuff) - he wasn't all that keen by all accounts (DH) but ate most of it. Going to try again tomorrow with sweet potato and perhaps some courgette or green bean mixed with the broccoli - he loves both of those. In fact we've yet to find anything he won't eat. He wasn't amazingly keen on banana yesterday, but I think that was possibly the lumps. Apparently that goes well with avocado as well .

Ceebee - glad work went OK - isn't it strange how it feels like you haven't been away for 7+ months?

Just a quick one tonight as I'm knackered too. Night all!

pinkdolly · 25/01/2007 07:48

Morning girls,

Agalch- How are your 2 this morning? I hope you got a better nights sleep {{{{BIG HUG}}}] as I am sure you are tired.

Well, I took Jazz to the doc's yesterday and she also has a chest infection (quite common after chicken pox apparently) so she is on ab's aswell. Agalch I may have to resort to your hints on how to get the meds down her.

Anyway have woke up this morning and noth my other girls are hot and coughing well. They are very whingy so its gonna be one of those days again I think.

I really sympathise with those of you struggling with going back to work. We made the decision after our first that I should stay home. And as I am home educating the girls I think i'll be too busy to go to work (lol). It must be a real wrench for you guys.

Kz- hope your enjoying your holiday, r you basking in the sun?
Well am off to tend to my lo's. Have a good day,

usandnosleep · 25/01/2007 07:50

Hi everyone

I'm afraid I'm really behind with everyones messages. Thank you all for your suggestions to help Zack's breathing.

We are now thinking it is more likely to be an allergy/asthma. And we think it's my sisters fault! It all started out as a bit of a joke that whenever Zack was poorly it coincided with a visit from my sister but it was getting ridiculous. She has cats and we are becoming more convinced that is the problem Both the nurse and the doctor said they wouldn't be surprised if it was asthma. Do you think this is likely? After a visit he coughs, has a runny nose, becomes wheezy and rubs at his face manically. A day and a night goes by and he is absolutley fine.
She is staying away for a while and then we are going to have a test visit if it happens again then I'm going to head to the doctors.

Hi First Thanks for asking after Zack, he is sooooo much better. Still taking AB's for a throat infection. Teething lots but that comes and goes so it's not getting him down too much.
Emma's night times are similar to Zack's, he goes down at about 7.30/8 and wakes 11ish, 2ish and 5ish. You are doing so well dealing with these nights and work too- Supermum! Bet you have a cape cunningly hidden under your work blouse!

Lysettes -it is VERY icy here, bbrrrrrrrr! No snow this morning though.

Twinkle- sounds like Aidan really enjoys his food

Agalch- {{hugs}} We shouldn't need to get pushy should we Bloomin' GP's we know our babies best after all. Wish I'd read your meds tip earlier! Although after struggling for a few days with the syringe I've found that Zack takes his AB's really well from his feeding spoon Hope your LO's are better soon.

Ceebee- I'm glad work is going well for you, good timing Josh Maybe he was too embarassed to do it at nursery

Beadmum- inlaws [YUK!] I have mine visiting on Saturday pm, HC can you send me some of that valium?!!

Weaning is going ok, I have to mix everything with milk and baby rice and make it very runny though. I'm slowly trying to cut down on these bit by bit.
It's a very messy affair because Zack has to have a spoon too and likes to put his in his mouth just as I'm putting a loaded up spoon in there and he also likes to put his fingers in his bowl to see what it feels like!

He is teething too, he seems to be ok most of the day and then come tea time those tell-tale rosy cheeks appear and he starts to pull at his ears. Calgel and Calpol are doing the trick.

Well I actually have plans to go out on Saturday night If everything goes to plan I'm going to put Zack down at normal time, dash out and try and get back before he wakes for his next feed. Once or twice a week he wakes at about 9.30pm so sods law it will happen but DP can call me and I can be back in half an hour if necessary, it's not like Zack is going to be starving is it?
I really want to go, I'm the only one in this circle of friends who has children and I feel I'm slowly losing touch with them. Will have to remember not to talk about babies, breast pads and teething all night

Have a good day all

usandnosleep · 25/01/2007 07:51

That is practically a novel

Your poor girls pinkdolly There are so many bugs around at the mon.

HumphreysCorner · 25/01/2007 10:26

Us-sounds suspiciously like an allergy to cats to me My friend has the same problem when she visits me but I think the Dr gave her some tablets which she takes before each visit. Just monitor it and see what happens. Will send you virtual valium if I have any left after Sunday!

pink-seems to be the season to have ailments. Hope your girls feel better soon. Gosh-you must have some patience to teach the girls at home. Lots of admiration eminating from the HC household.

Oh girls, bought the most gorgeous pair of HumphreysCorner coral coloured Lottie dungarees for Sophie. Far too expensive being as though I am not earning now but just had to buy them.

Gave her a double dose of Calpol and she slept through. Forgot to take the teething gel into Tescos yesterday so grabbed some off the shelf and gave her some. Did buy the tube. Nearly opened a box of Cow & Gate biccies for her to chew on as well.

Right better get on-think a nappy change is in order.

Have a good day ladies

Wallace · 25/01/2007 14:44

just a quickie. glad Eilidh is a bit better

Leo has a cough and cold, and had a terrible night. Took him to gp and he has been given an inhaler for a wheeze but at least she said it isn't asthma(dh has asthma)

kbaby · 25/01/2007 17:38

Ive not had time to catch up on all the posts so apologies to everyone who ive missed. Its been difficult fitting in mumsnet time esp as I feel Im neglecting DH so sorry if im a bit scarce on the posts for a while.

1st week back has been ok, the job is very boring and not much happening so the days are dragging but at least I can leave on time and forget it all, its quite difficult trying to get everything ready for 2 children in the nights though.
DS is now going down for naps and bedtime awake but still waking twice a night. On a plus side though MIL said he is sleeping for 1hr each nap and has been really pleasant and happy. Not sure how she is managing that though as for me today hes only slept 30 mins each nap. Weve all got bad colds and so were a grumpy household esp DD who seems to be spending all week moaning and whining.

DS also managed to sit up today but easily loses his balance, hopefully hell get the hang of it soon.
Agalch- I seem to have missed whats happening with elidh but I hope shes getting better now.

Our dear little cat got run over Monday night right outside our house. She survived and we rushed her to the vets but the next day they confirmed there was nothing they could do. She had multiple jaw fractures and lost the sight in both eyes as well as a swollen brain. The poor thing. We went to the vets while they put her to sleep and my heart was breaking as she heard us and started purring while they were giving the injection. I wanted to smash in all the car windscreens owned by the boy racers in our street. We live on such a quiet road and its only a few teenage boys who have no care of the speed limit. I was so angry and upset.

Wallace · 25/01/2007 18:16

maewest · 25/01/2007 19:42

Ceebee74 · 25/01/2007 20:21

Kbaby - so sorry about your cat - how awful for you and your family.

Today went even better than yesterday - when I went to pick Josh up he was really giddy and giggly - apparently he had been in a fantastic mood all day and the staff said they wished they had 10 of him [proud mum emoticon] - so I am feeling much better cos I am feeling much less guilty about him being there when he is obviously enjoying it so much - makes it so much easier to leave him. Kbaby - maybe our babies are on their best behaviour when they are elsewhere??

Work - boring though!!

Agalch - glad Eilidh is picking up now - and get you with your size 14 jeans falling off - how jealous am I???
