First birthdays are starting to arrive and our babies are becoming toddlers! What will the next year have in store?

DS had the men b vaccine done at 14m, he's had both the first 2 and the third will be done within 2 years. I hope it might be on the NHS by then! We paid £120 per jag. Did chicken pox vaccine at same time.

lilone1234 · 18/02/2016 20:59

Team, whereabouts are you? do you have somewhere booked in that can do it?

OP posts:
TeamEponine · 18/02/2016 21:39

We are in Surrey, just booked in with our nurse at the gp practice. Although the receptionists are pretty useless, so I can imagine them booking someone in without checking availability!

DH actually started looking into this yesterday without knowing that it is currently in the news.

lilone1234 · 19/02/2016 09:50

Did they say how much it will cost? Wonder if they realise they've booked in an older baby! I haven't actually asked our GP, should give them a ring.

It will be £125 for each jab. Although it is being done by out practice nurse, we are paying for it privately, so I don't think they care about the age!

I am wondering if I will turn up to get it done and there will be no vaccine available...

Awful night last night. I think DD has more teeth coming through.

lilone1234 · 19/02/2016 16:55

indeed! Hope they can do it! I rang GP to ask and they won't do it and all private clinics they know of around (also in Surrey) are out of stock...

I rang my gp they said to book an appointment in Monday and come and plead my case!

Yesterday I had DD's hair cut for the first time. Just trimmed in a little fringe to get the hair out of her eyes.

She looks so different. She looks so grown up.

I hate it Sad

jaykay34 · 21/02/2016 10:40

team I feel your pain.

J's first haircut was when he just turned one. I took him to the barber I use for DS1, there was no wait and he sat there perfectly. He had a scissor cut, short back and sides - but didn't look much different. Second haircut at Xmas was a different story...Had to wait ages, then he wouldnt sit still and ran round the barbers screaming - so I had to take him to another barber to finish the haircut where he did the same again. Was disastrous - but not much taken off so I could handle it.

Last week, DP suggested clippering J's hair. For some reason I agreed to this providing it was on the longest setting (grade 6) and thought at least if it's shorter it will take longer to grow. J sat in his highchair watching Cbeebies and didn't flinch.

When I saw the finished result I actually cried. I absolutely hated it - he looked completely grown up and a bit thuggish. He looks like a different child and lost some of his cuteness. Over the past week it's grown a bit but I still hate it. I just have to keep consoling myself with the fact that his hair grows quickly.

Acorncat · 21/02/2016 11:34

I'm dreading the first hair cut, thankfully DS's hair is growing very slowly! I'll probably just let it grow for a while, no chance he'd sit still for a proper cut

polkadotdelight · 21/02/2016 11:58

We have clipped DS hair with DHs beard clippers! Its too short on top but he has some cradle cap and I wanted to wash/comb it easily. I cant wait for the top to grow a bit longer!

cookielove · 21/02/2016 12:32

E looked like a big boy when we cut his hair, it wasn't the best cut and now he looks odd as it is thick ans growing fun. He is still pretty cute though so that's good!

Nazly · 21/02/2016 14:37

Hello ladies

Haven't had a chance to catch up for a very long time, just quickly reviewed the last week posts before writing. I couldn't believe the most recent subject was haircut. I did two full hair cut with my mum's help; she is not professional but is trained ; but my mum is not around and last time I cut his front hair just so he can actually see it was a diaster. I don't think he is going to sit in a barber shop for a cut though !!!

Off to google the vaccination issue ... I have no idea what you ladies are talking about - was under impression thAt nhs will cover every thing that needs doing ??

polkadotdelight · 21/02/2016 16:21

Sorry all, I asked the question about vaccination but didnt comment myself. We considered it when it first camr out last year, it was a lot of money and a long trip to our nearest clinic. I told myself at the time that if it was that important that he would have had it. I started to doubt myself a few weeks ago and then all the fracas hit and nobody can get the vaccine for love nor money now. I am kicking myself.

lilone1234 · 21/02/2016 17:39

Polka, I did much the same myself! I feel the same too. Thinking about the whole thing makes me feel quite sick tbh.

Haircut - DP says DD needs one because her hair is uneven but I've said no way! There isn't loads of it and it's so fair and fine.

Could Call The Midwife get any more harrowing? Blimey, if I wasn't so emotionally invested in the characters I would definitely stop watching it. So much doom!

In other news, it has become apparent that when DD see's any animal she will say "quack, quack, quack". While we might say Sheep says Barrr, can you say barr? and she will happily repeat "Barr". But show her a sheep (same with any animal) and say - What does the sheep say? and she will say "quack, quack, quack"!

Jaykay said earlier about fluking full sentences. DD has been doing that for ages. Not really saying the separate words, but getting the tone, inclinations and constituent sounds right. Her first "word" was whatisit?, followed by things like wheresitgone, whoisit, hereitis, itsallgone etc

It made me realise I was evidentially conversing with her by asking questions and then giving answers - so the questions were being repeated over and over again, rather than the noun words being repeated. I've made a conscious effort to ask fewer questions and instead give answers without the question first.

polkadotdelight · 21/02/2016 22:08

Call the midwife had me in bloody tears again tonight. I always cry as seeing newborns triggers a lot of emotions about DS early days and PND but tonight..... Why do I do this to myself?

FATEdestiny · 21/02/2016 22:30

I normally sit at the end of the sofa and cry discretely at CTM. Not tonight, I was actual sobbing. I did some panting for that poor woman and the placenta and then the whole attack - I just couldn't speak for ages

polkadotdelight · 21/02/2016 22:41

DH is banned from the room when its on because he laughs at me crying. I then made the mistake of watching Walking Dead afterwards, I wont give anything away for those that watch but as a mother I cried again!

KitKat1985 · 22/02/2016 20:57

I'm quite relieved I don't watch CTM. I've heard so many people say recently how harrowing it is to watch.

Had the Doctors today after being ill all weekend. I am getting over both a flu virus and a secondary tonsillitis infection. Sad I have to say DH hasn't been very sympathetic. I came home from work sick on Sunday (I stupidly tried to go in despite being ill but I couldn't cope) and he just expected me to take right over looking after DD when I came home. Hmm The thing is I know that if he catches the same flu virus off me he's going to go to bed for days and do nothing as he'll be 'too ill' as this has happened MANY times in the past. Why is it that whenever I'm ill I have to carry on and do stuff around the house and with DD, but whenever he's ill everything has to stop? I'm taking tomorrow off work (but DD is still going to nursery) and it's going to be a real 'luxury' (for want of a better word) to have a sick day where I can actually just sit on the sofa / lie in bed all day and feel sorry for myself if I want, rather than run around after DD all day.

Sorry. Just needed to rant there!

On a completely different issue, when do you generally take children to the dentist for the first time? I literally have no idea. I'm guessing about 2 though? DD has quite a few teeth now, and all of her big molars.

Acorncat · 22/02/2016 21:50

DS has already had a couple of dental check ups, he just gets seen the same time as me, 6 monthly. I thought they were to go once they had teeth. Tho given they can barely look in his mouth it's all a bit pointless really!

TeamEponine · 23/02/2016 19:01

Nothing to do with babies, but I had a really, monumentally shit day at work today. I feel like I've been slapped on the face. Sorry, just needed to get it out of my system.

DD is wonderful though, and I'm getting used to the fringe Grin

Hope all is well with everyone.

LillyBugg · 23/02/2016 19:53

Oh team :( anything you want to talk about? I just had a busy day. Only one person cried though. Hurrah! (Work in HR, there's always tears).

DS is finally taking some steps regularly, although he's still not happy about it!

TeamEponine · 24/02/2016 06:52

Thanks Lil! I have a new boss and it seems how my job is regarded has suddenly and drastically change. I've gone from glowing reports of my work to not meeting standards very quickly, apparently Sad I know that it isn't true, but it still upsets me.

I think DD has conjunctivitis! Other than warm water on cotton wool, can I do anything? Do I need to take her to the doctors?

Kitkat - I hope you're feeling better and that your DH is pulling his weight!

cookielove · 24/02/2016 07:31

team if you breastfed you can use breastmilk in the eyes to help clear it up! If not either cool sterile water on a gauze or cloth which can be thrown ir washed (don't use cotton wool) or dr for eye drops if really bad! We left it and cleared up by itself in a week!

lil yay for steps!!
