miniS had reflux pretty much as zyla described, it's bloody horrible Flowers to those of you going through it.

deeply I agree with rpopz, I got so wound up about nipple confusion but I think it's cowpoo too. Once you know the difference between feeding & sucking for comfort I don't think dummies do any harm. (I was totally against them before miniS arrived)

snap were on Facebook too incase mumsnet goes down & you miss us all! Send one of us a message & we'll let you in the secret club. Smile

Just taken miniS for a long walk round a lake & a picnic, ready to hide inside under the bed when these storms arrive.

WilHarlot · 12/08/2015 15:14

Step away from the late night google... Grin

Sorry but I need to scream "FUUUUCK MY TIT HURTS".

Deeply I would introduce a bottle by about week 4 and definitely before six weeks. I know people who have done it straight away and had no problems. I don't know of any evidence for nipple confusion. I did notice C wouldn't latch on properly if she had had the dummy in for a while but she figured it out within minutes. Then decided she hated dummies anyway. I probably wouldn't do a lot of bottles at the start in case they decided to take a preference for it but that's not based on any research - just I've heard people say it anecdotally.

I really don't know the answer to the expressing question. I think if you plan to continue expressing regularly then it shouldn't do too much harm as you'll be upping your supply to meet your needs. Although as Popz said, it's finding time which is the problem. With Mini, I expressed every evening from about 3/4 weeks and she got a bottle at the bedtime feed. Would really advise doing it in the mornings if you can find time though as you naturally have more milk then.

Snap, I think micro's issue was really down to the dairy so it might be different but she just used to SCREAM like nothing you'd ever heard. In the evenings for about five hours at a time and couldn't be consoled. Might stop to feed for a bit but then continued. Sometimes was fussing and arching her back during feeds. Always worse at the end of the day. Terrible night sleeper. But generally there would be an issue with lying flat too which she didn't necessarily mind which is why I was unsure about the reflux label. Also I was pretty sure she was having tummy cramps which I don't think is typical. Poor weight gain and coughing too. They don't need to have all of these though - some babies may only have one symptom. She was also congested which pointed to an allergy rather than just reflux.

Well, today did not go well. Although at least I got a nice lunch.

WilHarlot · 12/08/2015 15:16

Oh yeah, I have an Ardo pump which is apparently good for resale as it's a closed system. I find it a bit bulky though. Have also heard good things about Medela ones. I used to have an Avent which could be used manually or electrically which I found really useful but the suction was gone as I'd used it so much.

TheBooMonster · 12/08/2015 15:23

wil how is your boob? If you get a temperature get yourself to the dr's pronto, I developed quite the mastitis lump of doom at about 8-10 weeks, it was mahoosive (rofl autocorrect tried to turn that into manhood ice) and I was quite poorly by the time I got it seen to!

deeply I loooove my pump though I've only used it a few times, multiple kids and a husband who's lazy at parenting makes it hard to find the time it's an ardo calypso and it came with three sizes of boob suckers, it's also a closed system pump unlike the commercially available madela pumps but it wasn't cheap.

We're having a lovely afternoon in the garden having scavenged next doors climbing frame that they were going to take to the dump, so A is systematically moving the whole house into the garden... I'm trying to work out how many of us I'd set on fire if I tried to start the BBQ up...

TheBooMonster · 12/08/2015 15:38

Zomg viroids have you read the thread in site stuff about the outage?!

WilHarlot · 12/08/2015 15:52

Noooo I wondered if that would happen. Will go find it.

WilHarlot · 12/08/2015 15:59

I can't get the full thread on the app Boo. Are they advising to change passwords or anything?

Fleurchamp · 12/08/2015 17:15

Can someone précis the contents of the outage thread? Grin is a password change required?

wil the symptoms you describe are pretty spot on for S too - how did the Drs finally diagnose? Did they test miniwil? I guess they can't test for an intolerance?

Your boob sounds ouchy - I guess you have tried the hot flannel massage? I had to do that when my boobs were engorged Shock

DulcetMoans · 12/08/2015 19:26

They haven't said about passwords from what I can see but it seems a dads group ran an attack in the site
check out the boasting here

Looking at my google history popz I looked up:

Ragu sauce
Kellymom - lopsided
Kellymom - breast feeding
Highways agency
Renault Laguna
PNDdefinition
Baby groups locally

That's from yesterday evening through to this morning anyway!

Another vote for mandula here deeply but that's from feedback, not experience. I am looking to hire one though. I'm also not convinced by nipple confusion but may have been lucky. J has used dummies, nipple shields and a bottle and still uses nipples happily - more than happily!

WilHarlot · 12/08/2015 20:45

Bit tragic Hmm .

Fleur they don't really diagnose. Basically HV told me to go to GP as something obviously wrong - she saw a lot of the screaming. Got given gaviscon which made her throw up. I asked GP and HVs at bfing group if I should consider stopping dairy and they all said no, v unlikely yadda yadda. Eventually said to HV and she said she'd phone dietician who called me and said actually with elder child's problem, was very likely and yes cut it out. At same time GP gave me ranitidine for reflux. Within a couple of weeks, massive improvement. However she also hit the 8 week mark when they do start growing out of colic etc and was on ranitidine so was hard to see what made the difference. So after about 3 months I drank some milk just to see what would happen and she puked and had a million dirty nappies and was v unsettled. I recently stopped the ranitidine and she seems fine with that.

Definitions seem to differ depending on who you talk to but my dietician explained it thus (sorry for the length):
There is CMPA (cow's milk protein allergy) and lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance is extremely rare in babies and children other than temporary cases which result from bad tummy bugs. If baby is lactose intolerant, their body lacks a particular enzyme which breaks down lactose. In this case, they would also be intolerant to breastmilk.

CMPA is pretty common - more so in ff babies. Most children grow out of it. Symptoms can be like typical allergy symptoms - rashes, eczema, anaphylaxis, immediate vomiting; or digestive and delayed - cramps, diarrhoea, blood in stools and various others. I think she said a blood test would only give results for immediate symptoms so if your child doesn't have those, it wouldn't show up. I believe they can test a stool if it is fresh but you can imagine the logistics of this - so it isn't done. Diagnosis is basically done by process of: cut out allergen, see if there is improvement, reintroduce allergen, see if there are symptoms. The dairy will take a couple of weeks to leave your system and then a couple more to leave S's system so you would expect to see improvement around the 3/4 week mark.

Sorry if that is really long-winded or disjointed - baby not settling and tit hurts!

Basically if you think stopping dairy has had a positive effect, I would ask HV to refer you to dietician. Write down his patterns of behaviour now and keep a diary. Also, some babies are allergic to other things e.g. soy, wheat, eggs etc so it can be a bit of a minefield but tbh I'm not obsessive about it. Stopping the screaming was good enough for me!

Fleurchamp · 12/08/2015 21:18

Thanks wil that's sooo helpful.

Hope the boob improves soon x

RPopz · 12/08/2015 21:38

So what happened with the site hack? Am guessing it's something to do with that loser on the twitter link Dulce..?

RPopz · 12/08/2015 21:42

My mum poked me in the muffin top stomach earlier and said "what's THIS!?". Bitch. And minipopz just bit my nipple Angry Good day chez Popz.

WilHarlot · 12/08/2015 21:48

You should have told her it's caused by stress brought about by FUCKING ANNOYING MOTHERS.

SnapdragonAzZ09 · 12/08/2015 22:25

Great, thanks, Wil, that's really helpful. We have arching and fussing when feeding, gulping and coughing/ choking and I think I can hear the liquid going up and down in his throat sometimes. A snotty nose, too, which I had put down to a cold. Feeds are generally better when he's drowsy/ relaxed. Not much vomiting, not compared to his brother who puked on a regular basis. His weight gain has dropped a bit, HV said it's colic but his crying isn't excessive so I don't think that's right. Another trip to the GP methinks, sigh.

I have the Medela swing and found it really good. The Avent electric pump hurt me but nipples come in all shapes and sizes! Hiring a pump might be a good idea so you don't waste money if it's not right for you.

SnapdragonAzZ09 · 12/08/2015 22:30

Furry, thanks for FB tip. I'm not very active on there but would be nice to have another way of keeping in touch.

RPopz - your mum!!!!

RPopz · 12/08/2015 22:35

You're right, I should've wil. That and biscuits Grin

I do feel pretty fat and disgusting atm. I'm meant to be being a bridesmaid in 3 weeks time... Can feel a Bridget Jones pants purchase coming on.

How's your tit wil?

DulcetMoans · 12/08/2015 22:55

It's a big day for my job tomorrow. Feels weird that I won't be there! Everyone is setting their alarms for 5am and I am going to be at home working around a baby schedule!

Yeah wil, is the boob better today?

Nice one mummypopz... Maybe she was hoping you would say you were pregnant again! Have you got a breastfeeding friendly dress for the wedding? We were talking about this today actually in my group!

TheBooMonster · 13/08/2015 00:13

The thread about the outage is weird, it seems it's one Twitter bloke who can't decide if he hacked the site and has access to all our deepest darkest post shaped secrets or if he just ddos'ed the site for a while... He may or may not be in his teens and may or may not think he's multiple people. At the same time people's posts are apparently being edited and I've seen no hide nor tail from hq representatives...

SnapdragonAzZ09 · 13/08/2015 01:24

Wil, ibuprofen may help with inflammation (and pain) and bf/ expressing in a vertical position for a few minutes so gravity helps release the blockage.

SnapdragonAzZ09 · 13/08/2015 01:39

...ie dangling over pump/ baby. It helped me get a particularly stubborn blockage released.

LaLaLaaaa · 13/08/2015 04:10

Sleep, LO, sleep!!! rocks madly

OP posts:
WilHarlot · 13/08/2015 06:28

Oh no bad night La?

Boob is much improved thank you. Applied heat pack and did mammoth pumping session so think it should be ok now. I have one of those blisters that you had Zyla - (was it you?) so that's probably the cause.

Are you missing work Dulcet?

Fleurchamp · 13/08/2015 08:35

Morning all - bad night chez champ Sad

My smugness about S sleeping well has bitten me on the arse. I think I got 3 hours in total.

Thank god I can have guilt free caffeine.

However, in a fit of pique, it has given me the impetus to sterilise the breast pump (just an avent manual for now) and I will be giving it a whirl shortly.

Mums are great aren't they rpopz? I was talking to mine about he dairy thing and she just said "oh well, it will help you shift the baby weight".
I thought I was looking pretty good for 4 weeks post partum.... Reality check!

Glad the boob is improving wil

I am soooo confused about the outage thing. But then I have no idea how the internet works. Or electricity for that matter Confused

LaLaLaaaa · 13/08/2015 08:49

I'm so confused about the outage thing it went totally over my head!

Yesterday was a blur of visitors. Today we are off to look at the proofs of photo session last week then we have health visitor coming.

Ok night - went to bed at 9, fed til 10, he woke me up at 1 and 4. He went straight back to sleep at 1 but was a wide awake monkey at 4 then woke up for feed 5, 6, 7. Phew...bit tired.
