Hi ladies, here is a thread to get us started. The support of other 'Maysters' has been so valuable, would hate to miss out on this once babies arrive. I have a feeling we are still going to have lots of questions and experiences to share! Smile

Am definitely contemplating a Ewan. Bet Beth isn't fooled though!

purplebiro · 18/06/2015 20:25

Bought a Ewan today after reading reports on here - will report back with my findings...at £30 it better bloody work...

applecore0317 · 18/06/2015 21:47

I love Ewan, we have used him so much that the batteries ran out after 10 days...

longestlurkerever · 19/06/2015 08:50

Yes I have heard it gobbles them. Are they expensive big batteries or cheap aas? Hadn't banked on an extra mouth to feed!

minimooo · 19/06/2015 10:14

I don't have a Ewan feel left out Are they really good?

kitty I will pm you too if that's okay? Someone tried to add me to the fb group a few weeks ago but it didn't work.

We went for our 6-week check yesterday and Dr says all is good. Emmie has put on loads of weight and is now close to 9lb! She was only 5lb 7oz when she was born so she seems massive now Shock
Immunisations are booked for 2 weeks time.

avocadotoast · 19/06/2015 10:22

I don't have a Ewan either! When do you use it? Do you leave it on all night or just switch it on to try get baby to sleep?

FindingNormal · 19/06/2015 20:46

Hi all. I'm new here, so wanted to say hello! Ellis Abigail was born on 19th may- forceps with episiotomy so not much fun but I'm healing now. Love her to bits but starting to feel the sleep deprivation now...and my god, my boobs!! I have so much milk it's crazy. Exclusively breastfeeding at them moment but want to start expressing and using a bottle in the next couple of weeks - anyone got any advice? X

avocadotoast · 19/06/2015 23:46

I've expressed and used a bottle a couple of times now (no real routine, just as and when I need a break!). DD will take it and guzzles it down but it has to be warmed up a bit first - she won't take it cold.

Only thing I did find, and it might just be coincidence, but her latch seemed to be a little more difficult on days she's had a bottle. Haven't had one since though so not sure if it would make a difference.

FindingNormal · 20/06/2015 04:40

Thanks avocado - I'm a bit nervous for that reason. E is getting a bit lazy with her match anyway x

applecore0317 · 20/06/2015 05:32

Ewan uses AAA batteries. Good price on Amazon though for big packs.

Each noise goes on for twenty mins then turns off, one is placenta noise, another lullaby with heartbeat, then vacuum cleaner and I can't remember the fourth. I wouldn't go anywhere without him now lol we use the placenta noise at night as it really settles her, then again so does the sound of the breast pump ha ha

applecore0317 · 20/06/2015 05:35

Welcome findingnormal

Had my little girl on 1st June and have been expressing as well as Brest feeding, mainly done for cluster feeds when my nipples need a break. NCT have a good info page on bottle feeding on their website and tips for getting them to take the bottle as well as breast :)

minimooo · 20/06/2015 08:00

Hi findingnormal and congrats!

I'm expressing and feeding by bottle. I think it's individual to the baby as to how easily they'll take the bottle and whether there will be nipple confusion. Having said that, I've been using Dr Brown's bottles and imo they seem to mimic breastfeeding the best (i've tried a few other brands of bottles and found that they just don't give dd the same control over her feeding) Like I say though, it's so individual and what works for one baby might not work for another!

You probably already have a breast pump sorted, but just in case you haven't, then I can honestly say that the Medela Symphony electric pump is fab Smile

FindingNormal · 20/06/2015 15:07

Thanks guys. I have a hand pump which I bought when my milk came in and lefty got engorged. I seem to get quite a bit out using it but might invest in an electric one. I suppose what I don't understand is when to express in E's feeding cycle, don't want to leave her short when she's hungry... X

applecore0317 · 20/06/2015 15:10

You'll never leave her short, as someone else said to me, they are far better at getting milk from us than a breastvpump :)

Midwife told me to express after a feed, whichever boob she either hasn't fed off or fed less on x

Chookford · 20/06/2015 16:36

Hi finding I had my second dd on 5/6.. I was breastfeeding and bottle feeding combined, now it's mainly bottle with the occasional expressed milk from me as she is so greedy! She was 9lb 5 at birth though so she needs lots of food, and gives me a break when other people can feed her! As mini said each baby is different And different things work.. You won't leave your baby wanting as they will take what they need so don't worry

avocadotoast · 20/06/2015 17:57

Finding you'll be totally fine - as an example I expressed from left side at 5pm for 15 mins. DD then woke up and fed from right for 10-15 mins. She's now been on left for about 10 mins too. So there's certainly enough there for her.

Another way to put it - if you're cluster feeding there's enough, even if you're going for hours!

KittyVonCatsington · 20/06/2015 21:43

Welcome findingnormal!! Congratulations on Ellis!! Flowers

Mixed feeder here and Sarah will take both quite happily so hopefully you all don't have any trouble either!!

FindingNormal · 20/06/2015 21:49

Thanks guys. Think I'm going to wait until she's 6 weeks then I'll give it a go. Can't wait as have promised myself a trip to the hairdressers when I can leave her with her daddy for more than a couple of hours :) xx

purplebiro · 21/06/2015 12:16

Ewan the dreamsheep is a lifesaver. That is all.

applecore0317 · 21/06/2015 20:03

Ha ha purple, he's brilliant isn't he :) spotted Russell the dream sheep dog in boots today for toddlers, on her second Christmas list I think!

avocadotoast · 21/06/2015 22:37

I've decided I'm going to buy a Ewan I think. After last night, when DD woke up at 3:30 and wouldn't settle anywhere but on my chest (which meant no sleep for me until DH got up with her at 7:30), I'll take any help I can get!

Ibu1986 · 23/06/2015 07:06

Hello ladies,

I've been lurking for a long time and have finally plucked up the courage to contribute! Would it be ok for me to join?

I have a not so little boy born 6th May via ventouse. It goes without saying that I love him, but he is seriously challenging and there have been lots of tears from both of us in the last 7 weeks!

Funnily enough I asked my brother to send me a Ewan (I live abroad) as DS is a terrible sleeper. Fingers crossed it arrives soon. I'd be interested to see how other people use it.

Chookford · 23/06/2015 08:32

Hi and welcome ibu sorry to hear you are having sleep issues with your DS but remember it's totally normal and it will pass... He is still very young and a routine will be established at some point and you will look back on this period and think wow how did I manage that but you do as a mum because we are bloody marvellous! Grin

piglet81 · 23/06/2015 14:04

Haha chook, I think we should all print that out, laminate it and stick it on the fridge for those moments of self-doubt :-)

Welcome Ibu. My little boy was born on 10 May so just after yours. Ewan the sheep seems to be getting lots of rave reviews on here - hope you find it helpful.

Chookford · 23/06/2015 14:47

Do it piglet haha when I had my first dd I remember thinking oh my god no one told me how hard this is, but second time round I'm not stressed as it really only is for a little while.. They grow up so quickly so the sleepless nights, bleeding boobs and general feeling of being over whelmed doesn't last I promise!
