Welcome everyone. You're doing a good job by the way. Remember that.

We got given one, she's just about able to lie on it and occupy herself now at 7 weeks. She played on it with me a week or so ago, but needed to be able to aim her arms properly to grab things before she could do it without getting massively frustrated.

Tatty you can pick them up for pennies at NCT nearly new sales or Jack and Jill sales if you have them locally? We got the £60 fisher price one for a £5 and I've got a freestanding wooden play arch from Germany by Heimess which you can put over a chair, sleepyhead, change mat etc and which takes up much less space - I must dig it out. The toddler will end up under them both I'm sure!

Yes Tatty, I think a baby gym is worth getting. DS (7 weeks) will lie happily on his for 15-20 mins. He's on it now so I can eat lunch with both hands (I know it's a bit early but I was starving!). Ours is a bright starts one and it's great - nice bright colours, music not too annoying and it came with a few dangly toys but you can add your own too. We bought it for dd so it's an old model, similar to this but ours doesn't have a cushion on and it was a lot cheaper!

Oh Kirsti that is just awful!! That poor family.
My sleep deprived nights are nothing to their loss and devastation.

My friend just told me her son never slept through for 18mths. Ouch.

I don't know if anyone remembers that my DS never latched on from birth and my milk never came through... Well it looks like he does have tongue tie!! Will check with HV later but tongue definitely looks like it's stuck to his bottom palate. Angry

Tatty I've got a ikea baby mat and wooden arch with discs and bits hanging. Doesn't make noise or flash (was trying to delay the plastic invasion) and he'll lie and look at it for about 15 mins. Has no arm control so def cannot touch things. The dangly bits can come off so once he is bored with those I'll hang keys/wooden spoon/crinkly paper etc. I can move the arch bit over his bouncer etc. but I'd say the bouncer has been the BEST thing. He's sat in it since birth. Yet to attach the toy bar...at the mo he is just content to peruse the world from it.

Just asked my mum for the galt toys farm play nest for Xmas, kind of a sitting ring for when a bit older.

Thanks for all the advices. I think I'll get one- she seems to have woken fro her massive sleep way more alert and less clingy (via a night of hell last night) so I think she might be getting to the stage of being able to enjoy one, but to be honest it's at least 75% something to mediate my play with her. I'll say it loud and proud- I'm crap with babies. When they get to about a year I love them, but babies just make me feel socially awkward, so anything that gives me more of a guide to the shaking of things and the making of inane noises is a win- hence, play gym.

Tatty I have the ikea one like fatpony - nice and small and wooden. I just plop N on a comfy may and put it above. He likes to look at it and is attempting to reach out. I'm sure a lot of it is fluke but he's getting nearer all the bits!

Hi Jemima welcome, we are a friendly bunch with lots of different types of babies, sleepers, non-sleepers, screamers & content ones. My DS barely sleeps at all! How do you mean refusing to sleep on back? At all, at any point of the day? What age & how do you pur baby down?

Well if you promise not to judge.... He is 2 months old today and since coming home has slept on my chest. If you put him down on his back he will wake up straight away screaming if you put him on his side he will roll on his back and start screaming. I paid a fortune for a nice cot and as soon as you put him down in it he screams.
I bf and I know this makes him sound like a very unsettled baby but he's really not he just likes being cuddled. I've started to try bf on my side so he falls asleep there which seems to work depending on how tired he is. I've got 2 the point now that I am considering giving him a bottle (formula) before bed and nap time and give it to him on his back so he falls asleep there??
Any advice or suggestions welcome ha

Hi jemima I have 4 dcs and none of them have ever liked sleeping on their back. Try putting him on his side with a rolled up towel or blanket in front and behind him to stop him rolling also makes them feel a bit cuddled. :)

fatpony the galt play nests are fab the same one has done all of my children you can use it from newborn because you can deflate it a bit and it's like a cushion so you can just lie them on it.

kirsti that poor poor family I can't even imagine what they are going through.

Hope everyone is getting on ok I've got my period I'd forgotten how rubbish they make you feel!

I mentioned ages ago that my eldest dd (9) was learning to play the tenor horn for a term as part of a school music project. Well it's come to end and she has a concert on Wednesday in which she is doing a little solo! She is so excited bless her. I haven't broken it to her that all her little brothers and sisters are coming to watch too as I haven't anyone to watch them for me Confused not expecting this to be a very successful outing!!

Hats? Eh? I must have missed that! Haha.

tatty Dylan loves his now he's on a better mood. We've put his play ring under it so he's not flat on his back as he hates that! He's in there now, happy little thing today Smile
He is a different baby today after upping his omeprazole. We've even been bumps and babies and he's been lovely Smile

I'm not seeing any hats!!

HV says we have to get baby's tongue tie done privately as he is bottle feeding well and it's basically not the NHS's problem.
Err what about the fact I asked them at hospital to check whether he had TT and clearly they never did!!

Is anyone elses baby obsessed with standing up? Mine is, and even was in about week 2. She's shaking and grunting with the effort, but grinning all over her face at the same time. If she's crying, letting her stand up will fix it.h

Missus2ndwife · 01/12/2014 17:19

Yes Goats ours is. Determined to stand desperately,
but then he's trying to roll too already.

Report
YellowWellies · 01/12/2014 17:20

Mrsb awesome news! The difference is amazing isn't it? If he's still on omeprazole when on solids make sure he has a good zinc and iron supplement as it depletes the body's stores if taken long term. This shouldn't be an issue for now just remember to ask your doc at 6 months.

Yep goats Dylan loves to stand, usually when he's crying and getting his knickers in a knot.
missus they diagnosed his tongue tie in the hospital too and I was still fobbed off. I've been asking my gp since then too and they still decided "they don't do anything about tongue ties" even though he has colic and reflux. It took a distressed phone call and visit to the lactation consultant to get a referral

Report
YellowWellies · 01/12/2014 17:49

Jonas used to be desperate to stand when his reflux was bad as it lengthens the alimentary canal so keep an eye on it when tiny - it can indicate discomfort. It can also just indicate nosiness and curiosity too! Smile Lil is more into trying to roll or doing press ups on me. She still has the creep reflex from birth - if she's put on my front she can crawl up to find a boob. I'm not going to make the same mistake of my best friend last time who was convinced her baby was crawling at 12 weeks and would be an early mover. She still wasn't crawling at a year! Grin I'll put money Lil will be pretty early to speak but last to walk - if she follows her brother and cousins.

She got weighed today. 9lb 3oz at 9 weeks actual, 4 adjusted. Gone from 25 - 9 - 25th centile again. Ha screw you HVs and your top up pressure Envy if I'd topped her up they'd have credited that gain on FF when its just that her growth, like most kids, isn't linear.
