I think ds is cluster feeding tonight he has been on the boob now for just over 2 hours straight! )tonight is going to be a long night Shock

STIGZ · 04/12/2014 23:38

Is it possible for silent reflux to rear its ugly head at nearly 8 weeksSad

YellowWellies · 04/12/2014 23:56

Yes it can take a few weeks for the stomach acid to burn their throats. It could also be CMPI - also called delayed milk allergy as that can take weeks to appear in some cases. What's making you think SR? Sad

STIGZ · 05/12/2014 02:59

yellow lots of classic symptoms Sad comfort feeding, choking gargling sound, hoarse throat, disturbed sleep, crying out in pain, clearly hungry but struggling with bottle; im bloody gutted Sad poor wee thing has slept only 4 hours off & on since last night, will get an appointment tomorrow and see what they say

ExcitedCJ · 05/12/2014 06:48

STIGZ hope you all eventually got some sleep. Is there anything else that could be causing it? When was last poo? Is there a cold working on your LO?
B went from 11pm - 6:20am. Hopefully we get another couple of hours when he has finished this feed. I am away for the weekend & the cottage we are staying in is freezing, perhaps that is the key!?

STIGZ · 05/12/2014 08:37

cj i was putting the struggling with the feed down to needing a poo, but now im not so sure? She has a constant hiccups whenever she tries to use her wee voice to babble as if there is constant liquid in her throat? Im getting paranoid as she is only taking 3 ounces at a feed now but two weeks ago she was taking 6 ??

Your stretch of sleep sounds bliss, hopefully lots more to come ??

sazzlehopes · 05/12/2014 08:48

Morning all. Hope stigz you get some answers today.
We've had some odd few days. N has cluster fed in the early hours last night and the night before and did so yesterday eve from about 5-10pm. Just on off feeding and being unsettled. I thought he was just mega tired as he hardly slept in the day yesterday. Really odd as I thought we were over the cluster feeding but, especially the 3am to 6am slot?!! Confused
Anyway he's 8 weeks, well 9 on Saturday so perhaps we are coming out of a growth spurt of some kind. Let's see what today brings!
It's turned FREEZING overnight here in the south!!

oh STIGZ poor wee thing, I hope you get somewhere today. If they are going to give you some medication for her I would try & go directly to the Omeprazole ( Losec Mups). No Gaviscon, she is already having issues with poo, ranitidine is great but often only works for a short time. You could try the 'a friend of mine is in same situation & Doc said new guidance is to go straight to Losec.'
My DS is 14lbs & on a 10mg tablet once a day.

STIGZ · 05/12/2014 09:52

a friend of mine is in same situation & Doc said new guidance is to go straight to Losec.'

Is this the new guidance?

Sorehead · 05/12/2014 09:59

I'm absolutely fed up and feel like banging my head against a brick wall- I don't know what is causing DS' discomfort but it's getting to a point where I can't put him down for a sleep and he has to sleep on us because he's uncomfortable. I'll put him down asleep but 5-10 mins later he starts squirming and we get a 'pain cry' and he wakes up. When he's on me, he still squirms, opens his eyes and it's as if he looks to me for reassurance, then closes his eyes again. Not sure if it's reflux, trapped wind or both as he has a mixture of symptoms.

We've seen three doctors; one gave us gaviscon, one said if the gaviscon didn't work then it couldn't be reflux and the other, despite me saying the gaviscon didn't work, advised me to start back on the gaviscon and wouldn't listen to the symptoms to see if it sounded like anything other than reflux....oh and basically said that it was something I should be speaking to HV about and not bother her :(

It's really starting to get me down and I'm having crying spells most days because I'm frustrated I can't make DS better, and prolonged crying periods don't help.

Going to send DH with him, alone, next time as he's more assertive than me.

Sorry, just needed to get that off my chest.

FATEdestiny · 05/12/2014 10:21

Sorehead - does your DS take a dummy?

The comfort offered from a dummy can be very, very reassuring for a baby and helps them settle. Dummies can require some coaxing but help a lot for babies struggling to stay asleep when put down.

How old is DS? I saw someone say 8-9 weeks is the peak for screaming baby and they will gradually get better on their own (ie without any medication) if you get through this phase.

ExcitedCJ · 05/12/2014 10:43

STIGZ according to my GP, latest guidance is straight to Losec. Thought I was going to have a battle on my hands to get ranitidine straight away. My GP's are very good with reflux

ExcitedCJ · 05/12/2014 11:04

... Continued... DS pooed on me!
I saw a consultant with DD's reflux & he was surprised my GP had already got everything under control & he didn't need to do anything. My GP's seem to be pretty on the ball. HTH

STIGZ · 05/12/2014 11:18

Thanks cj your advice has been really helpful, my first dd had silent reflux and i was told just to keep continuing with gaviscon, which clearly wasnt working, i changed gp because of this as i felt totally let down that my first 6 months with her was not a good at all, i really do not want a repeat performance as i now have my first dd to consider aswell. I hope to god my gp is as good as your gp cj

sore i think you need to push for diffrent medication, i didnt first time around and wish i did... This is round two for me today...im not settling for gaviscon this time espcially as dd is already struggling to do a poo as it is

YellowWellies · 05/12/2014 13:44

Stigz, Sorehead I'd push for ranitidine or omeprazole. Some kids grow out of reflux if they have it mildly and that's great, the fact its not responding to gaviscon suggests its more serious and could take months to outgrow. You can't listen to them in pain for months - blimmin GPs. Also untreated reflux can cause speech and weaning problems. I agree with CJ. Fate's suggestion of a dummy is good advice too - they help produce more saliva which keeps the stomach acid down. Also tilting the crib head and wearing them in the sling really helps keep the acid from burning their throat.

mrsb87 · 05/12/2014 13:57

sore keep pushing. Ds was given gaviscon which didn't work. My go was rubbish. We ended up calling 111 and going to a&e because he kept choking in his sleep.

STIGZ · 05/12/2014 14:47

Apparntly omprezole is only prescribed by pediatrcians, i want to cry Sad

Sorehead · 05/12/2014 16:31

Thanks for the advice everyone.

STIGZ- did your GP then refer you to a paediatrician? I can't believe how reluctant a lot of docs are to prescribe medicine for reflux!

FATE- DS is 7 weeks today (where has that time gone?!) and is quite good with a dummy but will push it out of his mouth after a while, and start crying. It does sometimes settle him though. Fingers crossed for a quiet night here because DH is at the wedding of a close friend and is staying over due to distance. I didn't want to leave DS all day/ night so have stayed home. Very jealous of the cooked breakfast he'll have in the morning if he's not feeling too rough but trying to persuade myself I'm not jealous of the wine!

It's quiet here this afternoon!

Sorehead · 05/12/2014 16:32

Quiet on here*

ExcitedCJ · 05/12/2014 17:21

STIGZ that is BS! Poor you, poor DD. Can you find a GP that has a Paediatric specialism?
As sore asked have you been referred? Blooming heck, I count my lucky stars for the GP's at my local surgery, 2 of them are shit hot at their jobs!

STIGZ · 05/12/2014 17:59

Just typed a long post and lost itAngry basically the gp could clearly see with his own eyes how uncomfortable she was as she was red & screaming blue murder, and he advised waiting 2 weeks before returning... Heartless man Angry

Dp coming with me on monday, he is very assertive!

Why oh why do they not treat reflux with decent medication ? I have ended up with carobel thickining powder as i refused gaviscon, i feel so sorry for her and really let down by my gp once again!

Can a hv get involved with getting medication prescribed ? She knows about my anxiety issues and the impact my first dd's reflux had on my mental health plus she went through it herself

Smooshie85 · 05/12/2014 18:19

I'm feeling really sorry for all of those that have bubbas suffering with reflux problems - it's really tough when you feel like your not getting the resolution you need.

Good news looks like my mastitis/abscess has started the clear up - only after 5 weeks of extra strength antibiotics. Ladies if you even suspect you have it get to your gp straight away it's horrible!

Off for my 8 week check tomorrow ( I know a Saturday of all days!!) and it looks like lil has a cough so hope that can be sorted!!

hefner · 05/12/2014 18:20

Sorry to hear lots of you are struggling with reflux, it sounds horrible.

How do you get your babies to nap in the day? Until recently ds just fell asleep whenever he was tired without me doing anything, but for the last few days he's been obviously tired but unable to fall asleep unless I carry him in the sling. Feeding sometimes sends him to sleep but he wakes as soon as I move. Any tips? My daughter could only nap if I rocked her in the car seat and I really want to get into better habits with ds!

hefner · 05/12/2014 18:22

Glad your mastitis is clearing up Smooshie!

Smooshie85 · 05/12/2014 19:03

Thanks hefner it seems like i got there in the end and hasn't put me off bf either!
