Thread to share the newborn news and support each other through the 'eeek what do I do?' When the baby gets home and you stare at it in the car seat and think - help!!

Bump Lilla was 35 weeks and I hand expressed in hospital whilst she was learning to feed, whilst waiting for her tongue tie to be cut and we needed to flush the jaundice out - but we stopped by day three once she'd perfected her latch and was waking for feeds. I said to the MW that expressing would be difficult to juggle at home with a newborn and a toddler and they didn't push it. She's returned back to her birth weight in 12 days without top ups.
With my first I expressed and topped up for weeks, it gave me serious oversupply issues and his growth rate wasn't really much quicker than Lilla's. Though the routine 3 hourly feeds did make him a better sleeper!

bump could DH do a night feed? Would give you a break.

We are trying it but it's a bit hit and miss with bottle. He takes a bit then falls asleep. Then wakes up as soon as he hits his bednest!

It does get easier bump - in phases. Eberything is a phase - you will start saying to yourself 'oh it's just a phase! When something happens. Hard to imagine when you are in it, but things do change after short periods of time.

I am having a silly night and feel so bad for it.
I fell asleep 3 times tonight bfing my wee one. She fell asleep too and last feed did get a good one but then we fell asleep before I could put her in her basket. she is very safe sleeping on me.... (don't drink or move around) but am worried am doing something wrong by letting it happen.

I am hoping she doesn't get used to this as she had been getting good at being in her moses basket and sleeping the 3 hours between feeds....

fedupofrainydays · 09/10/2014 07:51

Don't feel bad dazed I really have to fight to stay away if bf in the night. And I'm asleep if lying down! You can only try. But I would try and put her down as like you say, one of the lucky ones whose little one happily sleeps in the Moses basket!!

Bump hell yes if she's happy with 4 hour gaps (and isn't jaundiced) then blimmin enjoy them!!!! I'm shit at falling asleep during night feeds and find only a good book on my tablet keeps me awake. I can't lie down to feed for that reason.

YellowWellies · 09/10/2014 09:54

Bollocks - the boiler's died, the dogs shat over the kitchen floor and Lilla has a poonami up her back! Happy end of paternity leave Hmm

porcito · 09/10/2014 10:54

I'm the same bump , keep ignoring my alarm and only waking up when she wants. The first week, after swearing I was way too thrashy to cosleep, every night I woke with her on my chest. Usually as the cleaner arrived. That poor woman's now seen us topless more than anyone.

Baby is a bit jaundiced but we're feeding more than every 3 hours in the day on demand, giving her 'sun baths' and the doctor's not worried... She's piling on the grams now too, another 250 this week so clearly not starving her!

Great having parents here - I ate a dinner with 2 hands yesterday!

porcito · 09/10/2014 10:57

How's your scar today yellow? They told me it does go hard around as it heals so hopefully it isn't infected for you just to add to your shit morning!

YellowWellies · 09/10/2014 11:11

I've got a docs appointment at 12.30. Just want the heating fixed or else my babies are going to have a cold night Sad

porcito · 09/10/2014 16:55

Hope you get it sorted yellow . We've got the opposite problem - a bedroom that gro egg tells us is a bit too warm, yet DP insists (based on MIL's advice) on putting 5 ridiculously large blankets over her. Hmm

I'm playing tour guide today and baby has decided that it would be a good day to have just one giant cluster feed. Mums should automatically grow extra hands for these situations or something...

YellowWellies · 09/10/2014 18:49

Doc not sure if infected so has given me a scrip for antibiotics. And given me permission to hold off taking them (ABs can pass into BM and really unsettle babies, especially as Lilly was CS I don't want to wipe out her good bacteria) until its obvious that I need them - ie if I get flu-ish, fever, chills etc.

And we've got a stop gap to fix the heating until we get a new boiler so the tots won't freeze tonight Smile .

I'm v chuffed with day one solo with newborn - batch cooked a roast chicken dinner and cottage pie, got four plumbers quotes sorted, registered L at the docs, sorted out washing, went to town and even managed a shower - I didn't manage any such feats whilst solo with J for weeks first time around. Now tomo with toddler and newborn will be a different kettle of fish Confused but at least tea is already cooked.

Just walked into the lounge to find a nearly two year old lounging in the baby Bjorn bouncy chair. He was vair louche but distinctly squished looking! I cracked up laughing.

fedupofrainydays · 09/10/2014 19:31

That's a regular occurrence here too yellow except mine is almost 3!!!

I can BF loading and unloading the washer and dishwasher and when hanging out a load of washing on the airer! I think its safe to say its much easier second time around Confused Smile

fedupofrainydays · 09/10/2014 22:52

I bf walking round the house too! Today I but ds1 to bed and did his dinner all whilst bf. I think it's cos he's so small and light!

Small babies and more confidence is so liberating this time. I'm not even feeling stuck to the sofa when she cluster feeds. Such a change.

Has anyone else's baby really woken up today? She's been so alert and so awake - its wonderful. Have realised she has the most massive loris eyes like her brother!

fedupofrainydays · 10/10/2014 00:44

Feeding constantly since 5 pm. Knackered and want to sleep!!!!

OP posts:
gunwalloe · 10/10/2014 05:53

Baby's loads more alert here to its nice as she's more accessible to the other kids who are desperate to spend time with her.
She's going 2 hourly tonight I'm shattered! Had 2 lots of 2 hours sleep so far.
yellow hopefully you won't need the anti bs my scars red and inflamed and has a whif to it but bloods and swab came back clear for infection

YellowWellies · 10/10/2014 06:09

Gun interesting mines gone hard and raised but isn't red or smelly. It has sealed - the hardness is internal. Maybe its like Porcito says - just a sign of healing. Am not convinced its infected but am wary as my cousin got sepsis from her CS. She warned me about chills / fever as being the symptoms to watch for.

fedupofrainydays · 10/10/2014 09:21

One of those nights when not actually sure if I slept. How much can a baby really want to eat?!

But I'm enjoying our first day without builders in the house. Staying in Pjs beyond 8 am is a novelty!

bumpbangbump · 10/10/2014 12:01

Checking in. Day 5 and feeling so so tired. Nipples are shredded and painful at the start of every feed. Totally emotional and weepy! But my baby girl is beautiful and it's all worth it... I think!

fedupofrainydays · 10/10/2014 12:34

Ouch bump sounds on painful. Have you tried nipple shields / had someone help you with latch?

I'm knackered too. Got out the dummy earlier as boobs were killing me after basically being sucked on for 24 hours solid. It worked and gave me an hours respite!

OP posts:
YellowWellies · 10/10/2014 13:52

Ouch bump have you tried lansinoh?

Just been to toddlers and then bank, post office, chemist, supermarket and bakers with pushchair and toddler, baby in sling and errant border terrier. Am shagged! Thankful that tea is already prepped, toddler is napping and baby feeding so I can sit on my arse!

You really do see the best of folks when out with a newborn - got so many coos and cwtches!

porcito · 10/10/2014 17:24

Feel your pain bump . My left nipple is the size of the baby's head. When it's that side's 'turn', I cry inside. Lansinoh is helping.

We had a day of nothing but feefing yesterday. From 3am Thurs to 7am today, she had about 5 hours in total not feeding. Great, on the day I'd decided to show my parents round. Where does she fit it all?! Today, back to the sofa!
