Thread to share the newborn news and support each other through the 'eeek what do I do?' When the baby gets home and you stare at it in the car seat and think - help!!

Bump I'd say keep doing what you're doing and maybe try a couple of longer sessions on an evening (when lots of babies will habitually sook longest) to build up her time spent on the breast. The BF support worker will advise best. But I honestly think you're doing great.

fedupofrainydays · 05/10/2014 23:41

If it's working bump and you need to get food in her then I would carry on. Also see was bf person says. Otherwise I think you wkll start stressing about how much you are getting in her and getting stressed out with her falling asleep. As she gets older she will be able to stay awake longer naturally anyway.

So ds took bottle and fell asleep after etc but started crying as soon as DH out him in bednest. Oh well, I got 1.5 hours sleep I otherwise wouldn't. He's now feeding on me!

Yawn so the wee miss is now feeding 3 hourly at night and can empty a breast in 15 minutes! That's the good news, sadly her reflux is so bad I then have to hold her upright for 40-60 minutes post feed to stop her choking Sad . Am trying to remember how long J's reflux was this bad?

gunwalloe · 06/10/2014 08:42

Bump it sounds like your doing fab!
fedup I suspect it's all the hormones that are making it worse hopefully it will pass I really don't want to have to take anything for it.
Last night was a 2.5,3,1.5, with feeds ranging from 15-30 I'm sure it's wind waking her up what's currently the best thing to give them it used to be infacol but I'm wondering if there's something new and better now?

fedupofrainydays · 06/10/2014 09:00

So we did a bottle last night of expressed. Meant I got an extra 1.5 hours sleep. He took it ok and fell asleep but as soon as DH put him in the bednest he woke up crying. So I gave him a quick nurse and he was asleep. He seems more settled for it too which is weird. Will see how today goes though! Expressing with builders around could be interesting!

Yellow - that sounds tough. I assume a sloped cot isn't upright enough?

YellowWellies · 06/10/2014 09:19

We've tilted the bednest but think it needs to be a lot steeper so will adjust again.

Fed up when did you express the bottled milk? If it was daytime it wouldn't have had high levels of sleepy hormones in it whereas your night time BM would have? Maybe that's it?

fedupofrainydays · 06/10/2014 09:22

It was first morning breastmilk - so about 8 am I think I did it. Does night time BM be more sleepy?? I learn somethjng new every day!

OP posts:
YellowWellies · 06/10/2014 11:52

Yes the hormone content of BM varies over the day, morning milk wakes them up and night time milk knocks them out. Smile

I got the heel prick results today with the all clear so one less thing to worry about :) Health visitors coming this afternoon I hope she's nice the lady I had before has now retired sadly, she was really good and willing to suggest non medical options.

fedupofrainydays · 06/10/2014 11:58

Oh no!! Worked for my other son though and I always expressed in the morning rather than middle of the night!

YellowWellies · 06/10/2014 12:12

Fed up don't worry I did the same with j and he was fine though sometimes needed a shot of the night stuff to drop off.

YellowWellies · 06/10/2014 12:25

I thought the book I've been reading on my tablet during night feeds was a bit hard to follow. I finished it at 6am and realised I'd missed 200 pages in the middle! doh! Thank you sleep deprivation.

fedupofrainydays · 06/10/2014 14:09

Is it weird to say I like the smell of his poo?! Or maybe it's in comparison to my toddlers poo!!

porcito · 06/10/2014 17:35

Mine reminds me of popcorn. Messy popcorn Grin

Today my parents arrive from UK with suitcases full of Cadbury's baby things. Very excited.

The crazy teary meltdowns of the first few days are over, but yesterday had a really down feeling for no apparent reason. Hormones!

gunwalloe · 06/10/2014 19:59

portico it must be lovely seeing your parents (and getting decent choccie :) ) Do you get to see them much?

porcito · 06/10/2014 20:54

I usually see them about once a year, though this is the first time they've been out to me. Definitely makes me appreciate them more! (and the chocolate!)

We're on a monster feed right now, 4 hours and counting!

fedupofrainydays · 06/10/2014 21:51

Have a great time with your family porcito! Can't beat some good cadburys when abroad either!

So second night of expressed bottle. Am off to sleep

Yours sounds very similar to mine last week.

This week I haven't been as scheduled and am feeding her more when she wants (but waking her up if she goes more than 3 hours).

I usually do one breast, change, try the other, often change again (she's like a poop machine). Usually goes for 40mins to an hour each side. She's also snacking more rather than just sleeping. I don't know how 'good' our schedule is but we're filling nappies, we're alert and gaining weight so far so hopefully it's working!

We are similar too. After special care and the jaundice I don't let him go more than 3 hours - except in the day he feeds almost hourly anyway! Well it feels like he's constantly feeding. He's going a bit longer at night now - so I finish feeding marathon about 8, DH giving him expressed bottle of 3oz at 11pm and then brings him up. He then needs some boob to settle, then wakes up at 3 for feed then 6.45. Always change nappy before feed as he poos constantly! During the day I change before feeds or as and when I can smell it!
