So here it is - a brand spanking new thread!

OP posts:
SAHMof1 · 01/01/2007 14:30

Asur, I breastfed while working (expressing took most of my lunch hour!) and would still be breastfeeding if DS had not refused to feed from me any more. He wears real nappies, and I have turned into a bit of a nappyoholic ? I am trying to set up the Swindon Real Nappy Network (we have a yahoo group, if anyone is local and interested!). I make my own baby food, and I absolutely refuse to let DS have chocolate. I have said to FIL that when DS is 1 year old, he can have a few white chocolate buttons, and no more. That was my concession ? and yes, people think I?m weird, but I AM sticking to my guns! He does have rusks and rice cakes, but I think they don?t count?

HockeyMum, I had to laugh at your DD! So cute! But I do hope you have a much better 2007!

Happy New Year all!

sniff · 01/01/2007 17:30

I still feed almost exclusivly because DD doesnt really like food at all and she doesnt have biscuits or jam but if she would eat choc pudding I might let her have it but only because we are having such a fight to get any food inside her

luckymummybigfattummy · 01/01/2007 20:05

SAHM - I believe Rusks are loaded with sugar. Even the 'low sugar' variety. Just thought you might like to know. Say Hi to Highworth for me

asur · 01/01/2007 21:02

thanks ladies for all your replies... Feel much better knowing that I'm not totally weird Although, I feel a bit mad - just spent the weekend cooking loads of food to freeze for DS - have put 45 meals in freezer so far but i've now run out of little tubs! Got loads of stuff stored in fridge till I buy more tubs tomorrow! Running out of space in freezer which means I'm having to eat a tub of ice-cream tonight to make space

Wishing you all a fantastic 2007!

squidgeymistletoe · 01/01/2007 21:20

Hi Asur - re finding space in tubs..... we bought the Annabel Karmel food freezer tubs (to make big ice cube-style portions) and then when the food's frozen we get them out of the tubs and put the cubes into freezer bags with what it is and when it was made on it. Saves loads of space and is easier to get out too.

Re Chocolates etc... DD has the cow & gate biscuits (the smell of rusks turns my stomach) and is mainly fed with home cooked food (although the bursery makes their own food so I let her have their food instead of taking my own in). She has yoghurt for sweet treats (usually petit filous) but rcvd a milkybar selection pack from the nursery for Xmas. I have to admit I have let her have some and have bought some more, because she DOES love it and it is for just a treat. She's also had some ice cream, which she quite likes but doesn't quite know how to eat (it's lots of fun watching her try though!). Generally I'm gradually getting a bit more relaxed about food - I was really pernickity about what she was allowed to eat to start with and it has recently become a bit of a battle to get her to eat at all (I blame the teething), so when she shows an interest in food we try to let her have some (usually she takes an interest in what we're eating). I don't let her have stuff that's loaded with sugar or with salt in it, but she's certainly enjoying her "baby" food more, since I've let her explore other foods. It's also helped us find out what she does like, so that we can get her to eat "baby foods" - eg, she refused to eat broccoli (with rice pasta) point blank, but she really enjoyed some of my cheese sauce and the nursery said she really likes macaroni cheese, so I mixed some cheese into her broccoli, and she loves it now!!

That said, I wouldn't let her have grown up biscuits or chocolate biscuits - she's allowed new foods within reason.

Sorry such a long post!

PS, hockeymum didn't realise you'd had such a crappy year, hopefully 2007 will be bigger and better for you and your family!

WinkyGirl · 03/01/2007 21:41

HNY All. Sorry I havent posted for awhile but DD and I were a bit later on the weaning and getting teeth front so we didnt have much to add...

DD Madeleine is 7 months old now and we are Annabel Karmeling like mad! My freezer is filled with little ice cube sized purees. I stopped breastfeeding just before Christmas as DD started to bite. I felt quite sad but life is SO MUCH easier now she is on solids/formula especially with regards to her sleeping. But am shocked at my deflated boobs

Wishing you and your LOs all the best for 2007 (especially Hockeymum.)

TheHockeyandtheIvy · 04/01/2007 07:49

Thanks for the new year wishes girls. I feel a lot more positive about this year already. It's going to start off well with dh taking dd away for the weekend tomorrow leaving me with just ds for a few days. I was laughing with him yesterday that when we had just dd if he had told me he was going away for a weekend and I would have the baby all to myself I would have been daunted and miserable. now I have two, the prospect of just DS (who is a breeze of a child) to myself all weekend is sheer bliss. Anyone who can keep my whingy 4 year old entertained for a weekend and leave just me and DS is officially in the good book

luckymummybigfattummy · 05/01/2007 10:17

Asur - I too spent new years day doing a big cook up for dd. It really drove me mad at the time, I spent 2 hours in front of the hob, steaming, boliling, mashing, washing up tubs and ice cube trays, painstakingly pouring moosh into trays and tubs. PMT didn't help, but now I'm really pleased co s I have a month's worth of food for dd in freezer.
I ran out of pots too, but aswell as popping out the ice cube tray size portions, I now also pop out any size meal from a tub and put it in a freezer bag. I have been using my Avent breast milk storage tubs, so when they're frozen, I put the meal in a bag so the pot is free again...huzzzah!!

Hope you are all having a good new year. I went back to work on Weds, just til 1pm. It was fine and I actually enjoyed being back. I was a bit sad the day before, but it was fine in the end. DD's face when I picked her up was a picture, it was sooooooooo lovely!!
I'm doing a full day Monday, so we'll see how that goes!

Now I'm just determined to lose the 1 and a half stone of baby weight I am still carrying. I've had enough of feeling fat now. Off to the gym today as dh is home to be with dd.

BrummieMomInMerthyr · 06/01/2007 23:14

Hi ladies, hope you're all back to normal after the xmas and new year madness!
I've just been catching up with you all, Hockeymum, what a nightmare 2006, good job Theo is such a good boy! Hope you're recovered from your chest infection and feeling more yourself.
Luckymummy, know what you mean about the fat tummy! think i've put on loads of weight over xmas, my jeans are getting a bit tight again! I'm going to do the kellogs 2 week challenge starting on monday and see what happens, and get back to the gym of course!
Dylan has cut another tooth, but at the top on the left hand side, so he's going to look like an old man who has lost his teeth and not bothered with falsies!!!! And i think he needs another hair cut, but he has this fantastic quiff at the front and i really don't want to cut it off

luckymummybigfattummy · 07/01/2007 13:33

sorry to get a bit serious but can I discuss car seats? AFAIK the lo's are meant to be rear facing as long as possible. DD is nearly 8 mths, but weighed 7.52kg (17lbs) at last weigh in 11th dec. She's not particularly big for her age but her feet are now hanging over the edge of her rear facing seat, which means that when she's in the car, her legs are scrunched up (a bit). Any ideas? We had a lady talk to us about car safety and she said they really are best rear facing, but I think she said that once they are too 'long' for their seats they then need to face fwd. But I also have it in my head that they have to weigh at least 20lbs or 9kg to favce fwd. I'm confused
Can anyone help?

BrummieMomInMerthyr · 07/01/2007 22:23

Luckymummy, Dylan outgrew his infant carrier about a month ago, he is still rear facing but in a combination seat Britax first class si i think it is, got it on kiddicare.com cos it's loads cheaper. You are right about the weight, Sophie will need to be 9kg before you can forward face.
It is really frustrating cos he needs to turn forward now cos he gets bored facing the wrong way iyswim!! Not having too many probs with crushed legs cos seat is a bit bigger. hth

louismummy · 08/01/2007 16:35

hi luckymummy, you shouldn't worry about squished legs, its where their head is in relation to the seat that is important. as long as that is protected its okay. Ds legs are very bent but the head is well protected, so he is fine for now...But one of the more important things before they go front facing is whether they can sit up unaid for 20 mins so they have proper head control. hth

luckymummybigfattummy · 08/01/2007 20:40

thanks louis and brummie. Very helpful. Sophie can sit unaided for 20 mins, but I would prefer to keep her rear facing as long as possible as I know this is what is advised safety wise. It was good to hear that squished legs are not a concern! Thanks guys....good old mumsnet, don't know what I'd do without it!!

squidgeymiller · 09/01/2007 11:38

Hi all, Niamh has finaly got her 2 front teeth (bottom) and has been very sore with it. Although she's know having great fun feeling her teeth with her tongue (much to our amusement, coz it makes her pull a silly face!!).

On a more serious note, re car seats. I'm tempted to go for one of the 3 in 1s that last from 9kb to 11yrs, but for some reason they don't seem to sell as well or be as expensive as the 2 in one, then 4yrs - 11yrs ones. Does anyone know why this is?? I don't understand.

luckymummybigfattummy · 09/01/2007 16:57

squidgy - I don't know why that is, but I can only imagine if they aren't as expensive, maybe they are not all they are cracked up to be. Esp if they don't sell well. Sometimes things that seem like a bargain and a good idea, can not be up to scratch, you know how it's better to use seperate shampoo and conditioner as opposed to a 2 in 1 variety??? It seems like a good idea, but it's just not as effective!! I can't help thinking how on earth can a car seat be suitable for a 9kg baby and an 11 year old child, the difference in size is huge, do you see what I mean?? Have you looked on the MN product review page to see if there is anything about them on that? Or maybe try a new thread on just that question, you might get some people who have one and they can give you an honest review??
Just a thought....

Sophie still got NO teeth. I'm bored waiting now. I'll never get to be the tooth fairy at this rate!

asur · 09/01/2007 21:55

Hi ladies,

Just on quickly but thought I'd share some 'wisdom' on carseats... DS moved to a forward facing seat in November (ish - memory isn't good!) We had planned to get one that goes up to 11yrs; knew exactly the one to get. Went to a Mothercare near us to double check his weight (they have scales and had only checked him on bathroom scales at home) Anyway, got advice from people in there. The 3 in 1's aren't recommended for little ones - they are basically only booster seats with harnesses and not as safe. Woman told us they would be ok for occassional use (ie. gran's car) but not for everyday use. They recommended getting a proper forward facing seat which will probably only do DS till he's about 2.5-3yrs old (because he is a big guy) then we could possibly think about a 3-in-1...

They also said about the squished legs not being a problem, it is their head that has to be in the seat...

Such a big choice though - would recommend going online to reduce the price like Brummie said but make sure the seat will fit in your car... Our car is awkward for seats so got our in toysRus as we could get it fitted - was in the sale too!

Not much news with us. DS is crawling - only backwards so far but figuring out forwards - would prefer to walk though I think! We're going away this weekend - first family holiday, should be good. Scary how big DS's bag is though compared to DH and mine! So much stuff!

plama · 10/01/2007 11:33

My baby has got a tooth!! No big deal I hear you say? But big sister made us wait till she was 14mths - so it's a big surprise to have a tooth at the grand old age of 7 and a half months

SAHMof1 · 11/01/2007 12:04

DS in forward facing car seat due to length ? head is fine, but still under the recommended weight. I was told that a crash could damage his legs if he were still rear facing. I guess it?s what you feel comfortable with. he is able to sit by him self, although he can?t pull himself up yet!

He has 8 teeth, and chatters away all the time. I?m sure he knows ?mum mum mum? and ?da da da? as us too ? he calls for me in the morning, and calls for DH after tea (when DH is due in from work!). Is that possible this early?

GingGangGooley · 11/01/2007 18:54

sorry I'm new and really confused how this works!

Is this the right place for May 06 babies? I couldn't find a particular group iykwim!

Hello anyway my name is Hannah! lol!

DD born 25.05.06

luckymummybigfattummy · 12/01/2007 09:20

welcome gingganggooley!!! Yes you are in the right place. My dd was born 17.5.06 so just a little bit older than your lo.
Welcome to the amazing May06 thread, I have found it very very helpful on several occasions.
Talk soon!!!

hockeypuck · 12/01/2007 13:05

hi gingangooley - welcome.

oh by the way I'm hockeymum just changed my name to this now.

Haven't posted for a while. DS still in his rear car seat but DD was out of hers before she was heavy enough because she got too long. DS doesn't seem to mind it so we'll stay in it for a while - luckily DD's stage 2 seat is still in perfect condition so we'll get that out when we need it.

The new year has started much better than I thought. Am much better now as is Theo and looking forward to the year. I have had an out of court offer for the car accident I had on my birthday so that helps! I'm going to use the cash to pay for my MSc which I'm starting part time in September - cant wait to exercise those brain cells again!

Nice hearing all your news - can't believe how quickly they are all growing up!

BrummieMomInMerthyr · 12/01/2007 18:27

Hi gingangooley! welcome! i have a ds called Dylan born on 7th May, 10 days late, but luckily 3 days after my 30th birthday! hope you find this thread as useful as i have!

squidgeymiller · 13/01/2007 10:35

Hi GingGangGooley, my dd, Niamh, was born 13.05.06, 14 days late. Welcome to the thread.

Thanks for the advice re carseats, stupidly I hadn't thought of checking the prod reviews on here (D'oh!). I can see your points re the 3in1s, it does make sense!

DD has started pushing herself backwards and this week is objecting wildly to having her nappy changed, which makes for fun!

Also realised this week I'm not feeding her nearly enough, so have stepped up her food and she's started sleeping straight through - result!! Only thing now is the thought of weaning her off a bottle to a cup for milk feeds and brushing her teeth after last feed before bed. Has anyone tried this yet?? Also, now that our lo's are a bit older, do we count their age by calendar months, or by week months? Calendar months Niamh is exactly 8 months today, but week months she's 9 months next week. I know it's only a few weeks, but I'm never sure. How do you all count their age?

Hope all are well xx

GingGangGooley · 13/01/2007 18:56

Thanks for the welcome ladies!

My dd was 4 days late but we just managed to get the homebirth i wanted
(they nearly took me in hospital cos they thought she'd be a porker!) She was 8lb 9.5oz so not too bad.

I'm finding this forum tricky to navigate is there an easier way to find the May threads?

luckymummybigfattummy · 13/01/2007 19:22

squidgey - I believe it's by calender months. DD is 8 mths on the 17th this week. Can't believe it's all going so fast!!

Hockeypuck, what are you doing your MSc in? I went back to work 2 weeks ago. I am really enjoying exercising my brain cells again! I admire you so much for doing an MSc with 2 kids. I love my job, and go on lots of physio courses at the weekends, but I don't think I could ever commit to that level of work. Most of my friends have done PT MSc's and I've seen what it does to them!!!!! Only joking, you seem very together kind of gal who will cope with it!!
