Feathers, dd's reflux started to settle at around 6 months when she was getting 3 solid meals a day but up til that, even when we first started weaning with quite milky food, she was still throwing up at least once after every feed. she had a muslin permanently attached to her because you couldn't hold her without being thrown up on! it was obviously the cause of the colic too. she slept much better tilted up like others have mentioned andi found baby massage invaluable for soothing her and aiding her digestion.

Hi everyone! Only had chance to skim through the messages as havent been on for a week. Hope mommies and babies are all doing well .

Jackson lost 9 oz at his first weigh-in last week but have managed to get him back up to 8lb 10oz (1.5oz off his birth weight). The midwife said my milk isnt probably enough for him and am having problems expressing for some reason so have started topping 2 of his feeds with bit of formula and what a face he pulls, obviously likes his mama's milk ha! Jackson is a very happy and contented baby he hardly cries and sleeps really well, gets up for one feed during the night at around 4ish. Has anybody got any tips on expressing or can recommend a good expresser as the one I have lent doesnt seem to be doing anything?? And I really want to express!

Eeny/Sal hope your ok, sounds like Alex is keeping you on your toes and when your tired it must be driving you mad but remember it wont be for too long and hopefully it will soon pass, keep ya chin up!

I've also got an infection on my c sect cut so am on antibiotics aswell as my iron tablets and painkillers. All this medication has made me even more constipated and the other night strained a poo the size of my forearm (sorry if tmi). Has anybody got any tips for bad constipation? Really tempted to stop taking the iron tablets as the constipation just panics me and I'm on the loo for an hour at a time crying and sweating.

Is anybody else really sweating during the night? I think its all the water I retained as my ankles which were really swollen have started to go back to normal thank god!

Yellow, you mentioned something for dry skin for Ellis, well midwife has told me to massage olive oil into the skin as Jackson's feet and hands are always peeling due to him being overcooked by 14 days. Also started peeling on his shoulder, I know you shouldnt but sometimes when I'm feeding him I pick it but its really flaky and wouldnt hurt him!

Has anybody been squirted with runny poo yet? Jackson's got a new trick and plastered my nightie last night lol, oh the joys of motherhood! Loving it x x x

lunavix · 05/09/2006 20:40

BHM at being squirted. kiera's tried, bless her, I'm usually being soaked in wee, she pees when her nappies off!

I got the avent isis iq uno thingy pump (electic single one) and it's good. I couldn't express with ds at all, and I'm still struggling a tiny bit (two sessions will get me around 3oz in total, as only one boob seems to want to work!) but the pump itself is fab fab fab. so easy. a bit pricey but worth it with the boots points from the huggies pack! Got £30 in points for buying it!

I'm sweating too... feel really stinky lol. Esp at night.

lunavix · 05/09/2006 20:48

I've posted a pic of kiera in the members bit. She's cute if I say so myself

katylou25 · 05/09/2006 22:18

Hi all

Can't believe Jacks a week old alreay its just flying by. Hes doing really well - was weighed yesterday and has only lost 1/2 oz of his birth weight must be because hes such a guzzler! Hes feeding well cluster feeds in morning and evening and 3 hourly in day and is only waking once in the night which is great. DS1 is still loved up with him got really upset yesterday when DH was taking him out and me and Jack stayed in - dragged the car seat to the door shouting baby baby bless him!

Sorry to hear some of you are having such problems with colic - not really got any advice as have no first hand experience of it but second just leaving the room for 5 mins if you feel yourself getting too stressed with anything - they pick up so much on how you feel and as long as they're safely in the cot whatharm can it do?? Know I used to do it occasionally with Ds when he was small and overtired, screaming for hours just 5 mins away can make the world of difference to your sanity!

sarahlou1uk · 06/09/2006 09:29

Sorry to hear some of you having problems with colic. I've been there and got the t-shirt so I know what you are going through. Well, my little madam decided to keep me up until 1.30am, then sleep for 2 hours and then get me up again at 3.30am . I am knackered this morning to put it mildly and I can't go back to bed because dh has just come off the night shift and is sprawled across it dead to the world (another )!

Anyway, mw came yesterday and discharged me from mw care. Molly now weights 9lb 1oz - not bad to say at birth 2 weeks ago she was 7lb 11oz! I must be doing something right or is she just a greedy little madam?

Got to go now. Sat here typing in my pyjamas and ds has just come downstairs to watch cbeebies - oh the joys of parenting!!!

speak to you all later.

hoppybird · 06/09/2006 09:57

Hello everyone!

Was first day at school for ds today - starting in year 1 - big brother proudly showed off little sister to anyone who cared to look. Both me and dh very proud of both our little angels! We'll be off to the clinic to have her weighed today - she's certainly filled out a bit, and I'm really looking foward to seeing just how well she's done.

Luna - beautiful pic of your dd! A real cutie!

BHM - I'd have thought expressing would be easier once your milk is very pentiful? Then again, I don't speak as an expressing expert, - I was always rubbish at it! However, the more baby feeds, the more milk there is - sometimes you really have to do the hourly feeding thing to build up the supply, horrifying as that may seem. Supplementing with formula won't help increase your own milk supply. I've also found that olive oil works like magic to help peeling dry skin. Have you tried prune juice and prunes to help the constipation?

Yellow - yes, I also think it would help if eeny has camomile and peppermint herself, to come through in the milk. I've also used camomile tea, as well as fennel, and it seems to have a good effect, at any rate, it doesn't hurt!

Dreamy - some good advice about colic and diet there - I found that me eating chocolate definitely upsets the system for little ones too.

Sal - I remember (just about, although it's a bit hazy because of all those sleepless nights) that the colic seemed to reach a crescendo at around 3 months, and then once I started on the fennel tea, and ds went through a growth spurt and feeding frenzy, that it gradually subsided after that, rather than suddenly stopping. Although my ds didn't develop colic as early as poor little Alex has. I do hope something can help you, and as others have said, if the constant crying gets too much, put him in his cot for a bit, to keep your sanity.

YellowFeathers · 06/09/2006 15:49

Hi everyone!

BHM, Lactulose for your constipation. Comes in a plastic bottle. Not sure if you can get it over the counter but if you need a prescription for it just tell your MW or HV that your having probs and they will give you a prescription.
I'm also sweating alot in the night. Strange isn't it?

As for Ellis' dry skin, the HV is bringing me a prescription for Aqueous cream. She said it will clear up on its own accord but its getting worse and spreading all over so I'd rather get it sorted.

Luna, did you get my message?

Ellis will be weighed again tomorrow so hopefully he will have put something on since Monday. He vomited again yesterday on the last feed of the SMA but since then he's been on the Enfamil and touch wood he's been fine and taking slightly more on each feed. The only problem is that as the milk is thicker he's having to suck a bit more so he falls asleep more often lol.

YellowFeathers · 06/09/2006 15:51

I just been told that on Monday next week, which is the first day on my own, not only is dd starting school so we have the school run to do but we're having all the front of the house's windows replaced and door!

Great.

purpleturtle · 06/09/2006 16:29

Sorry to read about all the problems people are having. Elijah and I have thrush, which is nice. Fetched appropriate meds yesterday, and so long as i can remember to dose him 4 times a day, and myself 3 times, we should be okay in a week.

On the other hand, he has put on weight again - now up to 9lbs 2oz, my cracked nipples have healed, and I'm proudest of the fact that I managed to get all 3 kids out of the house to the doctor's and back yesterday, without losing it! (It did involve bribery of the sweetie kind to get ds1 there and back, though). Ds1 is definitely pushing boundaries very hard at the moment. Hopefully, nursery restarting tomorrow will give him another outlet for his energy.

Dd went back to school today, and her report on the day was "It was super!".

Shame about your windows Yellowfeathers. Still, it'll be lovely when they're done...

SnowBoo · 06/09/2006 22:59

To top my day off ds1 has just woken up, i've been stroking his hair to get him back to sleep and found......NITS!!!!!!!!!!!! Hes due back at school tomorrow....WHAT DO I DO?????!!!

hoppybird · 06/09/2006 23:37

Well, my first trip to the baby clinic was a success - my little dd is now on the the graph rather than below it (only on the 0.4th centile though)! She is now weighing in at 5lb 15oz (2.7kg), is tiny next to other babies, BUT she has actually gained 10oz (280g) in one week! Am very impressed!

After the clinic, we went to pick up ds from school - we were a little early, the teacher saw us and invited us into class to show our baby to the children. Julia was the star of the show, managed to be awake for the children to see her properly, and the teacher made a learning experience of her presence, by asking the children about what they thought she was able to do at her age. Most of the children hadn't seen such a little baby before. ds was terribly proud of his little sister!

PinkTulips · 07/09/2006 09:56

awwwww, hoppy thats lovely! great experiance for the kids too... i bet your ds was beaming!

Snow poor you having to deal with nits... nasty buggers. best way to deal with them is to get a nit comb and tea tree oil. comb the hair, then wash it. while it's wet massage a few drops of tea tree into the scalp and thouraghly comb the hair with the nit comb and get every last nit. repeat this every night until his head has been clear for about 3/4 days. it's tedious but it works.

hi everyone! sorry I dont have time to catch up on everyones news. Alex is fussing (again)

basically he is very colicky and doesnt ever want to be put down. So I have NO time to myself really. We have some days that are better than others but today he starts crying as soon as I set him down. Flattering for me but very inconvienent. He is on his own at the moment across the room from me and I am hoping it lasts for at least 10 mins.

Alex is thriving though. He now weighs 8lb 5oz!!! Must be those hourly feeds fattening him up! We are really proud of him.

I hope you are all doing well and that eventually I can rejoin the land of the living!

lots of love

sarahlou1uk · 07/09/2006 17:42

Eeny - have you tried a sling with Alex? That way he can still be close to you but you get to have both hands free! I've got one for Molly and it's wonderful !

YellowFeathers · 07/09/2006 18:34

I can second the sling Eeny. I put Ellis in his the other day when he was screaming and he stopped instantly. I think its a combination of them being close to you and the position it keeps them in.

SnowBoo, poor you is all I can say or sods law more like it!

HV came out today and Ellis has gained 2oz so thankfully hes putting on weight now but has dropped from 75th centile to under 25th.
He slept like a dream last night too, 10:30 till 6am! But sadly it was dh's turn.
Since hes started on this new milk he's really having to suck hard as the milk is thick and as a result its tiring him out and all hes done today is sleep. So I bet I'll be up all night!

eenywifemum · 07/09/2006 21:00

I have a carrier not a sling and the carrier didnt go well when I tried it yesterday! he was already crying though when I tried to put him in it so maybe I picked a bad moment to try. I am wishing I had a sling now though as he likes to be in that position, across my chest.

eenywifemum · 07/09/2006 21:02

yellow, meant to say glad Ellis slept through the night so well! hope the same happens tonight!

sarahlou1uk · 07/09/2006 21:12

Eeny - I would advise investing in a sling or a pouch. There are quite a few on ebay at the minute but I've got a Freedom ring sling one (she sells on ebay). I've also got a mothercare carrier that I had for Jack which he didn't like - and now Molly doesn't like either! The sling lets them lay across you or upright. I have to have Molly laying across me as my big boobs prevent her from getting comfortable in the upright position !

SnowBoo · 07/09/2006 21:14

Good luck Yellow....Can't actually remember what a good nights sleep feels like! Anyone got a clue?

Eeny, glad to see you're still sane. Hard work being mummy. And daddy Sal. Hope he gets rid of his colic very soon so you can both get on with enjoying every moment with him.

As for the sodding nits, poor ds refused to wash his hair with Lyclear? so i told him the nits were actually bloodsuckers and would drink his head dry . I've never seen him rush up for a hair wash so quick! Well, they do say you have to be cruel to be kind....

One last (stupid) question. Can i take a bottle of cooled boiled water to bed and add the powder when he wakes? To save a trip downstairs as i can just about find the moses basket, let alone the fridge! Have tried bfing in the night but he wants to feed for hours and i'm too tired....

sarahlou1uk · 07/09/2006 21:27

Snowboo - the only problem is that if the water is cold, the powder won't mix properly and you'll be left with lumps. Have you got a bottle warmer you can warm the water with before adding the powder?

SnowBoo · 07/09/2006 21:30

No. Would it help if i put it in a bottle carrier thing?? The one with polystyrene (sp?) lining? Or put the water in red hot before bed.

YellowFeathers · 08/09/2006 15:50

SnowBoo, those bags are no good IMO. Never keep the bottle at the same temp for very long.
If I were you, depending on what time you went to bed and when ds wanted feeding, I would make a bottle to take with me and leave it ready. Or you could by some of the single serve cartons and they'll be at room temp

We've got yet another problem. Ellis has started passing blood in his poo. We've had at the dr's again and they've said if it carries on today and tonight to take him to hospital. So we're keeping a watchful eye on him.

Its very quiet here today. You all enjoying the good weather while it lasts?

eenywifemum · 08/09/2006 17:08

YEllow I hope Ellis is alright! Keep us posted.

SnowBoo I dont blame you for not wanting to make a trip to the fridge in the middle of the night! Sorry I dont know the answer to your questions though.

Alex has been a darling today - He HATES being put down though. when I am holding him he is quiet and as soon as I set him down he starts crying. VERY hard for me to do anything but makes me feel loved and needed which is nice.
