Hi all - the old thread was about to run out so I started a new one.

Little Miss was up to mischief last night. Thankfully it's DHs day off today so he took her into bed with him while I slept in the spare room. She is just so excitable when she wakes up at night. It can can 90 minutes to scrape her off the ceiling.

Ha! That's another thing: DD doesn't have tantrums, but if she doesn't want something she throws it away. So she has a basket of toys and pulls out and throws away anything she doesn't want to play with at the time. Same with her cup of water; if she doesn't want any water right that second she throws it away (after she's shaken a load on the floor of course). It drives me mad!

Mrs81 · 18/06/2014 11:17

DS is another thrower. Tantrums haven't started yet but the dismissive flinging something to one side is quite comical.

Water is an ongoing battle in our house. DS is generally quite reluctant to drink until he's gasping. Which makes this hot weather a bit challenging...

HungryHorace · 18/06/2014 12:06

Hedgehogy, are you still using the Tommee Tippee free flow cup? If you get the next one up it can be turned upside down and doesn't leak. :-)

www.tommeetippee.co.uk/product/easy-drink-cup/

We have to scrap using the Doidy cup because of throwing as we were all getting soaked.

hedgehogy · 18/06/2014 14:07

Yes we are, Hungry. Thanks for that. I hadn't looked at any other options after the HVs went on about the free flow cups. We have a wooden floor so luckily it's not too much of an issue but I think I'll look into getting one of those!

SunnyL · 18/06/2014 14:13

Ha my dog is LOVING the dismissive throw of food. Once little miss has had enough of something over the side it will go. I've had to adjust the dogs diet to stop her getting fat on pasta and toast Wink

Just been looking at all the cups on the Tommee Tippee website - I can't cope with that much choice!

The easy cup is recommended up to 12 months so there's probably no point getting one of those now. These look good as a non free-flow option; DD can drink from an adult glass (with me holding it, obviously) so she's probably like one.

These look like the next stage up from the free flow sippy cups: www.tommeetippee.co.uk/product/kids-on-the-go-super-sipper/

HungryHorace · 18/06/2014 16:57

We've got some of the next stage up ones and leave them lying around for DD to use and get used to. She drinks loads of water but was struggling a bit using the next one, so we will go dual use until she's used to it. :-)

Need to think about weaning her off bottles from next week too. That'll be interesting. Useful to do before baby comes though.

On the chickenpox vaccine we've decided to give it a miss because of the shingles thing. My uncle and my grandma have had shingles and it's really caused them great difficulties. In fact my uncle had it 18 months ago and it looks like its caused him permanent problems including nerve damage. As horrible and unpleasant chicken pox can be for a child i'd rather do what I can to avoid her having what my uncle has experienced.

BeanCalledPickle · 18/06/2014 19:59

Sunny, she's not more likely to get shingles herself, it's that if every child was vaccinated then people in general are more likely to get shingles. As she will still come into contact with chicken pox throughout her life because it's still around she will not herself be more likely to get shingles. The increased risk of shingles would only manifest if everyone was vaccinated. And in any event there is a shingles vaccine which she could get when she's older.

hedgehogy · 19/06/2014 08:05

DD drinks loads of water too and she likes her current sippy cup. DH thinks that for the next stage we should go straight to using the cup we have without a lid! As I said, she drinks fine from our glasses but letting her loose with her own unlidded one sounds very messy! Reading up on it though, babies seem to have the doidy cups from a very young age so she might get used to it (without feeling the need to spill) quite quickly. There's one website saying you shouldn't use any cup with a sticky-up bit but the HVs definitely recommended the free flow sippy cups (they gave them away!).

I've been torn on the chickenpox vaccine since reading up. At first I thought we'd go for it but then I read that they have to keep having boosters throughout life as no one is sure how long the vaccine is effective for. Not an issue if you're in a country where everyone is vaccinated but I don't want her getting it as an adult if I can prevent it.

SweetPeaPods · 19/06/2014 08:40

My baby is 1 today.... I can't stop crying!!!

MaryWestmacott · 19/06/2014 11:11

SweetPeaPods - I was a bit emotional too - esp as DD is walking, I don't have a baby, I have a toddler and as she's my last one, that's it, I'm done On the other hand, how much more fun are they now they have their own little personalities and are playing more! the next stage will be super cute and fun (and I can't wait until she can tell me what's wrong when she's crying!!!)

Hedgehogy - DS wouldn't drink from a cup for ages, eventually we tried him with a straw and that was a big hit, far easier when out and about if htey can drink from a straw, most cafes/restaurants will have straws. (and you can shove a couple in your changing bag so you've always got one to hand)

hedgehogy · 19/06/2014 11:25

I was emotional too, I had to put a lot of effort into holding back the tears when everyone sang happy birthday.

Straws are a good idea, Mary, as an open cup won't work when out and about!

hedgehogy · 19/06/2014 11:28

Mary, do you have a special cup with built in straw for on the go?

Sunbeam18 · 19/06/2014 16:11

I just welled up even reading about everyone singing Happy Birthday. I'm going to be a mess on Sunday when we have our party. We are doing same as you, Hungry - BBQ on Sunday!

MaryWestmacott · 19/06/2014 16:18

hedgehogy - we did have, from Sainsburys, have it somewhere, really need to find that! Otherwise, I just took a bottle of water and a straw.

Mrs81 · 19/06/2014 17:05

We have a cup with a straw also. DS drinks more from that than anything else. Whilst the weather is hot, that's good enough for me!

It is emotional, the whole turning one thing isn't it? I held it together on the day but did have a big cry the night before
I've been offered an interview for the job that I applied for Grin I have 2 wks to prepare my socks off and regain some professional self confidence. Let's see how that goes... Confused

hedgehogy · 19/06/2014 17:17

Well done Mrs and good luck!

Thanks Mary and Mrs, I've just got one with a straw. It took me 20 minutes to decide on one though - in the end I let DD pick! She went for the purple Tommee Tippee one, though the nuby ones looked appealing (and were narrower so would take up slightly less room).

HungryHorace · 19/06/2014 19:16

I can assure you non-pregnant ladies that trying to hold it together while even thinking about your child's first birthday is just impossible with pregnancy hormones to contend with!

It's going to be tough on Sunday, I can tell you. :-/

We haven't tried our cup with a straw yet. We will get there though!

Saturday will be spent making the cake. That should be fun. Or something!

We have had a couple of unaided steps. Getting there. Hopefully she can go for it on her birthday when we go to the beach. :-)

BeanCalledPickle · 19/06/2014 22:05

I can't believe you are having another next month HH. I just cannot imagine it right now. We've kind of agreed to not actively prevent anymore but I just can't imagine the physical strain of a newborn. Though I guess you've not got your life fully back and started enjoying your freedom again like I have! That's one good thing about doing it back to back I guess! I'm really enjoying work, nights out, red wine. So not ready to trade it all in again. Doing it so close you will remember last time very well, does it make you think 'well I won't do that again' or 'I'm definitely going to be less precious about that'? I was stressing about how nursery is messing up naps and the women at work were very 'this is first time parent syndrome. If you have two the second just fits in. You can't creep around them in the same way'. Guess that's true! First babies get food lovingly prepared. Second gets whatever anyone else is eating!

HungryHorace · 19/06/2014 22:23

I didn't mind the 3 months of work I did do! Though it was knackering.

We just decided it was easier just to get it done. It disrupts less of our life doing it this way as they'll be in consecutive school years and all that malarkey. I can't imagine waiting 4 years and then doing it. This also disrupts my career the least too as once I start proper I won't have to stop...clear run til death retirement!

It's swings and roundabouts, and what works for us isn't what would work for other people. And vice versa.

I can't wait to have a proper drink at some point though. And a good night out would be awesome. Not long to wait though!

HungryHorace · 19/06/2014 22:36

And mostly I expect to be more relaxed about everything really. And more assertive if I feel something isn't right.

I'm more worried about how DD will react than how DC2 will fit in. This baby's not going to have known anything different, but DD will obviously feel an impact. But we shall see what happens, I suppose!

Sunbeam18 · 19/06/2014 23:25

Bean, you have your life fully back?? I'm still struggling to remember my life!

Mrs81 · 20/06/2014 07:02

I'm with you on that Sunbeam! What is this freedom that Bean speaks of??

SunnyL · 20/06/2014 08:26

I'm pretty broody at the moment. I think my brain has forgotten how tired I was this time last year because every time I see a pregnant woman or tiny baby I go 'awwwwwww'. We're not planning on trying for another for at least a year as maternity leave bankrupted us so need to do some saving. Smile
