Hi all - the old thread was about to run out so I started a new one.

Little Miss was up to mischief last night. Thankfully it's DHs day off today so he took her into bed with him while I slept in the spare room. She is just so excitable when she wakes up at night. It can can 90 minutes to scrape her off the ceiling.

lol Aloha no, it was his Christmas bib that Santa brought him :o but he's made so many bibs manky that we've resorted to using it out of season!

Well I am completely shattered this evening - had a party for DD this afternoon (M and DS1 joined them for birthday tea), there were only half a dozen of them but my god, they're hard work! And pretty much all word perfect on Let It Go, any Katy Perry song you care to mention, most of 1D and Olly Murs, I think my brain has turned to mush. Thankfully we're done till next year now!

MaryWestmacott · 18/05/2014 18:17

Rue he looks so happy!!!

I'm thinking just one layer of the cake (I think the bees will be realtively easy to make and I'll use ready to roll icing, not actually make it!)

For a gift, we have similar problems with an older sibling. We're going for a little tikes car as we didn't get one for DS. toys R Us have them for £34, which is about £10 cheaper than Amazon (and free delivery).

DD has been poorly today, not sure what it is, last night I thought it was teeth, but even though I've kept her in, she's been hot, off her food and refusing to drink (bit scary in this heat). She has, however just demolished a pile of roasted butternut squash and chicken, and seems quite cheery, so hopefully she's on the mend.

HungryHorace · 18/05/2014 20:14

Mary, DD had a cold last week which had the same symptoms as your DD is having. Maybe it's something like that?

We are thinking of a trike-type thing, but I can't make my mind up which one to go for. Too many decisions to make! :-/

hedgehogy · 19/05/2014 08:39

DD will be getting a trike too (not from us). I know the smart trikes are the popular choice but I'm not keen on them for some reason so I've chosen the little tikes version instead (after much research!). We're getting her outdoor stuff like a slide so not much help there.

SweetPeaPods · 19/05/2014 09:59

Ds got given the smart trike 4 in 1 recliner thing) for Xmas from my brother. Think he bought it from tesco. Looks good so far but not used it loads tbh.
Ds has a vTech grow and go ride on which he loves ATM. Think we might get a slide and paddling pool for bday, or a sand and water pit as he loves them at nursery.

SunnyL · 19/05/2014 11:29

Yep we've got a Little Tikes trike. It will hopefully be useful when I want to walk the dog. Had an arse of a time trying to find a unisex one. They were all either hideous pink or blue. Does everyone have a crystal ball and know what sex their future children are going to be or are they richer than me and buy another one if the next child isn't the same sex.

HungryHorace · 19/05/2014 14:52

Sunny, the next child here just gets the same toys, regardless of gender. Plus sleep suits / vests etc! :-)

Money doesn't grow on trees, so they'll have to just deal with it! [cruel mummy emoticon]

hedgehogy · 19/05/2014 15:26

Same here, HH. If we have a boy next I won't have a problem with them using DD's things (including sleepsuits/vests).

BeanCalledPickle · 19/05/2014 18:58

If you are putting away vests that could be reused then you are doing a lot better than me. Everything here gets so matted with general food and horrors that it gets tight and goes in the bin. The only stuff that could be worn again is nice stuff like dresses and cardigans which I'm guessing would be a bit mean on boy baby!

HungryHorace · 19/05/2014 19:24

The coverall with another bib underneath saves clothes from too much coverage! And dresses etc won't be used on a baby boy (though there are some t-shirts which could get used!); I agree that that wouldn't be fair. :-)

Only 10 or so weeks til I know the sex...exciting!

RueDeWakening · 19/05/2014 21:09

DS1 used to wear a bright pink puddle suit :o and still wears Minnie Mouse wellies (his choice!). He's quite fond of hair clips, too. And nail varnish.

Very in touch with his feminine side!

We have always tried to get unisex stuff - ride ons, walkers etc. But I think it was easier 7 years ago when DD was a baby, I've noticed a lot more pinkification (and blueification) over the past few years. Business trying to get us to spend more £££?

MaryWestmacott · 19/05/2014 21:13

Oh this is one of the things that annoy me, I really don't like pink, so trying to avoid it.

There has been rather a lot of 'pinkification' going on for hte last few years, but there does seem to be rather a 'fight back' and I'm seeing more other colour options than I did when I had DS. Suddenly there's reds, greens, yellows and wooden toys.

BeanCalledPickle · 19/05/2014 21:43

My rule is that she doesn't wear anything I wouldn't wear a full size version of myself. So no hideous mummy's little princess t shirts. Nothing embroidered with ducks. Nothing much more adventurous than spots or strips. I've found that dressing her like that is quite expensive. And hard to do. Luckily I do like pink so that's ok. But it's everywhere!

So I buy a lot on eBay. And sales. And generally try to buy what she will actually wear and nothing more. Which means it gets worn to death! Very little goes into boxes to keep these days. Are you actually using dresses that much? Since cruising took off here it's been shorts and cut off jeans a lot!

MaryWestmacott · 19/05/2014 21:57

oh but bean, I wouldn't wear a romper suit, or a pinny dress, or matching knickers to my dress, or socks with dresses, but DD looks gorgeous in them! (Boden have 20% off until Wednesday, just seen this - I wouldn't wear a parrot print dress, but how cute is this?!)

HungryHorace · 19/05/2014 22:08

Dresses are crap for cruising, I agree. But nice and cool in the scorching weather we have had (think tonight's storm has ended that one!).

I get loads in sales and I mostly don't buy twee stuff! But I agree with Mary in that some stuff is just too cute / adorable to say no to. :-)

Oh, I think we are being taught a lesson after putting DD in the Jumperoo so much as she now loves jumping. She didn't even realise she'd let go of the sofa the other day, she was so busy jumping up and down! Why learn to walk when you can jump?!

BeanCalledPickle · 20/05/2014 07:33

Are you kidding Mary? If they made matching knickers to my dresses I would be all over it! :-)

SunnyL · 20/05/2014 08:26

Since Lil was 6 months old I decided I was too cheap to spend £8+ on dresses for her so I've been making them myself. That means I've had a lot more control over the colours she wears. She does have pink stuff but it is moderated by blues, greens and yellows. I had £50 of tescos vouchers recently and really struggled to find clothes that weren't pink pink pink.

I can cope with the clothes thing but it's the toy thing that really fecks me off. Been getting quite a few things from charity shops - as they're older there is less of a gender bias. I mean why should a trike be a girls trike or a boys trike? Stupid marketing people.

OP posts:
Mrs81 · 20/05/2014 16:08

Charity shops and the suchlike are brilliant for kids clothes. I don't think we've bought much at full price for DS. Similarly, I object to some of the clothes for baby boys on offer. There's too many teddy bears and things with ears ( Next, I'm looking at you ) for my liking.

Just seen a job to apply for. It would be a good 'un, would suit our wish to keep nursery to a minimum (the job is 1.5 days a wk) and I could continue with being self-employed too. But I'm nervous of applying. I'm a muppet and just need to get my arse in gear.

SunnyL · 20/05/2014 18:11

Mrs I filled in a job application last week - my first in 7 years. I've ummed and aahed all week over whether it was a good idea. After a particularly crap day today though I'm convinced it was the right thing.

Do it do it do it

Mrs81 · 20/05/2014 19:32

Thanks Sunny Smile Similar to you, it's been some time since I applied for any jobs. That, and because I've not returned to working as much as I was pre ds means that my confidence is a bit wobbly. But that isn't a reason in itself not to apply!

Sunbeam18 · 20/05/2014 19:49

I get most clothes on eBay. Go for the job, Mrs!

AlohaMama · 21/05/2014 06:28

Do Mrs81. If you're feeling nervous have someone else look over your application with you,and if it comes to it, have them practise interviewing you. Even if you decide not to go for it in the end going through the process will be good practise for the next one.

Had forgotten about eBay for clothes. Mostly we have hand me downs so I then feel justified in buying the odd thing new, but that is just so I can choose the colours I like (rather than sticking to the donated pink and lilac). Vertdaudet parcel on its way right now

hedgehogy · 21/05/2014 10:29

I don't think I've had to throw any clothes away; everything has come out in the wash without me doing anything special.

I wouldn't go as far as making a boy wear DD's dresses but I have no problem with a bit of pink. Saying that, I thought that her trike would be purple but it has arrived and it's definitely on the pink side - despite looking very purple in all the photos.

I've spent quite a bit on clothes for DD, mostly from M&S with the odd thing from JL, but Sainsbury's also do some lovely clothes for girls so I've had quite a bit from there too - very reasonable in price (and they have a permanent sale section where new things are always being added). I'm not keen on slogan stuff but love cute dresses (she has a lot of dots etc but one of my favourite items in her current wardrobe is a purple dress from JL with white embroidered owls all over it - photo taken from a google search).

Good luck with the jobs ladies. I'm quite happy to go back to mine when my career break ends, luckily they're very flexible if you have children (term time only, part time etc).
