August 2005 - The One With All The Birthdays!!!

Here we are everyone, a new thread, as promised ready for all these little ones to turn one.

Here's the link to the old thread

Miaou, I was just thinking of doing the exact same thing the other day, so much better than a baby book, as it really does record all of the milestones as they happen.

Another milestone today, ds2's first visit to the dentist. He was ever so good he let the dentist look at his teeth, which his brother never did. In fact the dentist got his first look at ds1's teeth ever today and it was his fourth visit!

We're all set for his birthday tomorrow, but I'm tired, it's hard work having 2 birthdays in a week and DH is thirty 2 weeks today, TOO MANY BIRTHDAYS!!!!! We're having friends round for an afternoon barbecue (DH will be getting in touch with his inner caveman over an open fire ) and people are dropping in as and when. Just hope that his cake is OK when it's delivered tonight.

Let you all know how things went after the party.

Hello new thread! Feel rough, pregnancy with a almost 1 yr old isn't fun. Hopefully will get to updating more on here soon once I start blooming (yeah right - never happened with DS!).

PanicPants · 29/07/2006 22:36

Happy 1st birthday Kates' ds!

We've still got nearly a whole month to go yet! Hope it all went well today and that you avoided the rain. It was sunny here this morning but then clouded over - much nicer to be honest though.

Miaou - I'm going to blatently copy you - what a
great idea

My thoughts are with you suzi2, I really can't imagine what it must be like, just said to dp and he turned pale at the tought of it!!!!!

Ds has just got his 8th tooth coming through at long last, the other 7 came one after the other a few months ago, and then nothing! He's really beginng to cruise properly now, and has even mastered the step in the kitchen - up and down, but the step up into the conservatory is a bit bigger, he can get up it, but not back down so he gets a bit stuck and starts to cry!

I'm trying to wean him off formula in a bottle to cows milk in a cup. We're starting with the 3 o'clock bottle only and today he drank it without too much fussing at all (I'm pleasently surprised as i've only been trying for 3 days hmmmmmm feels to good to be true).

My aim is for him to be on cows milk in cups by his birthday which coincides with me going back to work. It would make my life so much easier!

Thought I'd make my post separately to the list.

Love the diary idea Miaou - I know I only joined when DS was a few months old but I'm still amazed to see the changes as I've been posting.

Charlie's suddenly finding tricks at a rate of knots! From the clapping a couple of weeks ago we've now suddenly got tickling (where he 'starfishes' his hand and giggles), dancing (to the thumpiest beats unfortunately - looks like he's going to be a raver!) and saying 'miaou' whenever he sees a picture of a cat (we don't even have a cat at home!) He's also really into lift the flap books and really seems to have started focussing on each page as we read it. We have spent most of the last week visiting various beaches around Kent now that DH is on summer hols. DS still loves the sand (the sludgier the better!) and is gradually getting used to the sea when it is a bit warmer, although he's still not sure about the waves crashing!
His final new trick is a difficult one. He's started biting everyone when he cuddles them. The big problem is that I think he sees it as a kind of kiss so it's really difficult to tell him off. Anyone have any ideas on how we can stop him doing this?

We're off to visit friends for a few days now so happy birthday in advance to Callum and Jaxon!

queenrollo · 30/07/2006 12:06

belated birthday wishes for Ben100.....hope it was a fantastic day.

found out that a friend had a baby girl yesterday.....been out of touch so didn't know she was expecting, but i felt very emotional about it. my cousin in Oz had a baby boy just over a week ago and i feel all tingly at the thought of all the new emotions and experiences they will have now they are parents.

Kipper....ds is having a biting phase too, but he has 5 teeth coming through all at once so i think it's that. i have noticed when his teeth seem to be playing him up that he bites a lot, but when he's had some calpol he seems to stop it.

well off i go...had a friend round last night and we were up talking late, i didn't go to bed till 1am (dp was up till 3am!) and ds got up at 5.50 so we are all worn out here!

suzi2 · 30/07/2006 12:15

kipper - DS does the 'friendly biting' thing. He used to do kisses but does this instead. I actually say No biting to him now and stop him. Just worried that he'll do it to another kid who won't find it as funny as we all do.

My DS seems to have slowed down with some things. Still waiting on the correct use of mummy and daddy and still waiting on a first word. Cruising is going well with occasional shows of courage 'leaping' for things (and usually falling on his head!). Still hasn't clapped hands, although will give a high 5 and will clap 2 toys together so I'm sure he could manage! He seems to need challenges... said he couldn't crawl, he did it that day. Said last week that he didn't like chips - he ate 5. Said he wouldn't crawl on grass as he's scared, he crawled on the grass. Yesterday we were at a 1st birthday and said that he'd never be that tall - swear he grew and inch overnight!

He likes proving us wrong and making a liar of us.

kate100 · 31/07/2006 12:11

Thanks for the birthday wishes folks. We had a lovely day, the weather just about held, it was dry during the day for the kids, but the adults got a bit wet when we sat in the garden drinking in the evening, oh well Will try and post a picture, but it might take me a while.

Ds2 had a lovely day and has had lots of lovely presents and I was right he does love his tambourine from his big brother. Ds1 also loves the Dizzy that he got for his birthday from ds 2and keeps telling people 'look this is Dizzy, Ben gave him to me', very sweet.

I've spent this morning running around various toy shops exchanging duplicates for both boys and spending their birthday money, so we've now got lots of toys for their new sand pit, which is a real sacrifice for me as I HATE sand!!!!! But they both love it, so a sand pit we now have.

Can't believe how fast this year has gone, it seems a very long time ago that I was holding tiny baby in my arms, well not so small in ds2's case. I had him weighed and measured last week and he's a giant!! He weighs 26lb 2oz which puts him on the 91st percentile and 81cm long which puts him on the 98th percentile!!! The health visitor could only just fit him onto the chart, he nearly didn't fit onto the measuring board. Still he's happy and healthy and nicely in poportion, bless him he's big everywhere.

OP posts:
PanicPants · 31/07/2006 21:40

James is a biter, and I think he means it as a kind of kiss, and for ages I just said no, but he carried on, and now he really hurts. So as soon as he does it now, I say 'no biting' firmly and put him down and walk away.

And so far it seems to working (fingers crossed!)

But he only ever bits me. Hardly ever dp, has anyone else experienced that?

colinandcaitlinsmommy · 31/07/2006 22:38

Happy late birthday, Ben.

Things are crazy here. Caitlin's been waking up at 2 am 3 nights in a row and not going back to sleep until almost 6. I looked in her mouth and she's had 2 teeth pop through, and 5 more really close. She had 1 molar(?!)come through on the bottom and 1 other tooth come in on the bottom. She only had 2 teeth on the bottom beforehand. And she's got all 4 canines coming in, and another molar coming in on top. So much for teeth coming in order. At least when they all come in she'll have 13 teeth and not that many more left.

Her eyes look great after her surgery. I can't believe the difference.

She's started to walk, and can get about 10 steps or so before she tips over.

The kids and I move Thursday to take care of DH's mom, who I can't remember if I told you was dying of cancer. DH will be up as soon as he can, but will probably be another month and a half. We'll be separated by about 250 miles. I really hope she starts sleeping better by then.

queenrollo · 01/08/2006 08:02

happy birthday to Miaou's Calum!

i can't believe it's August already!

sorry to hear your having a rough time with Caitlin C&C's mom........ds has taken to waking at 5am after previously sleeping 7-7, this morning i brought him into our bed (usually dp gets up with him) and he went back to sleep for two hours. he did cry out in his sleep a few times, and it's his teething cry but he has his 4 canines and two molars all pushing up so not surprised he's a bit unsettled.

i've started leaving ds to his own devices with his porridge in the morning (after i've made sure he's eaten enough)...he's nearly got the hang of the spoon, but usually ends up covered in food. it's messy but he's having fun!

Miaou · 01/08/2006 09:15

Thank you for the birthday wishes guys - just off to work now so will post later!

kate100 · 01/08/2006 13:52

Happy Birthday Callum

Sorry your having such a time of it C&Cmommy, hope that Caitlin gets lots better and that your DH is with you soon. Sorry to hear about your mother in law too

DS2 is a bit poorly with a very snotty nose and nasty nappies. I'm sure he's got a whole mouthful of teeth coming and is finding it really tough going.

OP posts:
josey · 01/08/2006 14:38

Happy Birthday Callum

hope things start getting better for you soon C&Cmommy

DD went ot jump off my bed this morning and as i caught her she bumped my arm and split her lip with her teeth

she started biting everyone last night including herself she still only has 2 teeth and no real sign of anymore so hopfully its a sign she is going to get more soon she is also being really strange at dinner time and has to pull all her food out of her mouth mush it in her hands and then put it back in or through it im starting to hate dinner times!!!!

I was a bad mum and ran out of formula last night so just though to hell cows milk and cup here we come she was a bit socked but delt with it well - im on holiday now so can cope a bit better with a few ups and downs so hopefully no more bottle making!

wilbur · 01/08/2006 15:37

Hi all - lovely to see everyone gearing up for the big birthday! We're having a party for Caspar on Saturday (which is actually MY birthday, but I don't mind sharing it JUST THIS ONCE ) as we're going away the following week and then moving out temporarily while builders rip the house apart. Yikes. I'm also going to start getting rid of the bottles. He's fine with water from a cup and I gave him a bit of milk that way yesterday which he was a bit confused about, but not upset. I'm hoping by the end of our hols to have him on cups for everything except a bed time bottle which I'll carry on with for a couple more weeks. Right better get back to packing boxes. Anyone got any good tips about living in a two bed flat with three children....?

suzi2 · 01/08/2006 17:44

Happy Birthday to all the mummys and babies.

DS still won't drink any milk since he stopped breastfeeding. i'm trying hard not to get worried about it - poor thing doesn't understand why he's getting offered yogurt every 2 mins!

No walking or talking here. But plenty of cruising and babbling. Still hasn't grasped using mummy and daddy properly. We're having his birthday party on Sunday and I'm making top hats and having loads of sweets! Just trying to work out quantities for the party food. Anyone a good idea of how much each adult (mostly adults) will eat and drink? We're just doing sausage rolls and things.

Tigerlion · 01/08/2006 19:41

Happy birthday to all those little ones. Are they officially going to be toddlers once that they are One or does the term mean that they are physically toddling along at the same time? Hasn't time flown by quickly?

CandCsmom, great that Caitlin's eye surgery went well and hope that temporary separation from husband won't be too tough. Will you see him in the month and a half?

Suzi2 I hope you are feeling better. How many weeks PG are you now? I had really bad morning sickness for the first three months which I did not have with DS1. Sod's law that it would come at 5pm, which is just when I would feed him and get him ready for bed! Are you feeling very tired? I broke down in tears today at my seven month check up with the GP, telling her how difficult it was with DS screaming the whole time and refusing to eat. I felt so much better after my weep but still can't believe that we will have two LOs in two months' time!

Has anyone used a Rabbitt safety harness changing mat? It is quite expensive but apparently really keeps baby still when changing them and it is meant to last until 36 months. DS crawls madly around the room when I try to change his nappy and I am thinking of getting one of these to keep him still for a few seconds. Would be great to hear from anyone who uses one.

Hope all the birthdays and parties go well.

suzi2 · 01/08/2006 19:48

Tigerlion - I'm only about 11 wks. The nausea has improved the last couple of days but the degree of it has still surprised me! I can only think that this one is a girl! It's definately hard with DS and I feel my energy is just so low. I had erythema nodosum and joint imflammation during my 2nd trimester with DS so really trying to take it easy this time. Not sure what I'll do if I'm quite immobile again.

Can't believe you're 7 months already! What are you going for in the way of pushchairs BTW? I'm trying to stop myself looking (not wanting to tempt fate) but can't help it! I thought singles were a minefield...

colinandcaitlinsmommy · 01/08/2006 20:08

Happy birthday Callum. I can't believe it is August already.

Tigerlion, we will see each other sometimes. It is just a very long way to drive with the kids and I, and his mom is bad enough I can't leave her that often. He often has to work 6 days a week, so I told him not to come up when that happens. He just found out today that construction is behind schedule, and if they can't get back on, it won't be finished to open in October, and if that happens they won't open it until January, because they don't open stores in Nov and Dec because of the Christmas rush.

Good thoughts to all those of you pregnant. It was hard enough with a 16-24 mo. old. I can only imagine how it is with a younger one.

bramblina · 01/08/2006 22:50

Belated birthday wishes Ben and happy birthday Calum! I really can't believe a whole year has past, and we no longer have "babies". I began a diary when ds was born, I had an A4 2005 one which I filled each page of every day, and for 2006 I bought a lovely lined notebook from Paperchase. The last time I wrote in it was Feb but I've kept little notes about every day in my daily diary. I really want to update it before ds's birthday- but that's only 3 days away! You all have inspired me!
Feeling quite low today about ds's birthday party. Fri is the day but everyone is at work (except us) so we decided to have a small party on Saturday, but about half our friends are away. I thought the inlaws at least would pop over (they live 10 min walk away) and bring ds's great grandpa (86) but today MIL said they're not going to bother. FIL won't be home till very late (can't be helped) but MIL is only going to "pop" in and see him open his present. They have decided to go away for the day on Sat,thus missing the party- so told me to keep them a bit of cake! My Mum is 61, disabled and works full time, yet is planning on driving 75 miles after work on Fri just to see him. It turns out now we may have to head over her way on Thurs to pick up dh so I may ask her if she would rather we stayed overnight and she would see him at hers, saving her the journey. I think I'm overreacting but I guess it's just going to be this all the time- feeling hurt because not everyone in the world thinks your child is the best thing ever! My sister, niece and nephew are driving quite far for the party though (sis is making the cake- she is just fab at these things) and the few friends who are coming will make a nice group. I'll get over it!
Josey LOL at the feeding dilemma! Ds has just started doing this too. A few weeks ago he began helping with each spoonful, which was great, guiding the spoon almost to his mouth, but last week began to remove lumps from his mouth and either hand them back to me or put them back in his bowl! He was good with lumps before but now is just being fussy! And the latest trick is- I feed him with a spoon in my right hand, he helps with his left hand, but has just noticed that his right hand is frre, and likes to grab what food is on the spoon, I am stuck as I have the bowl in my left hand...he had a good squelch yesterday with a handful of rice pudding. I don't want to totally discourage it as I know it's just normal but oh it's a bit testing!
C&C'smommy, so sorry for Caitlin. Ds has had some awful nappies and a few whines for no apparent reason but he's never very willing to ahow his pearly whites so it's hard to tell if there's more on their way. All his others were quite "textbook" with their timing so it's likely. He has woken a few times in the last fortnight, but goes back down no problem. He's pulling himself up to standing on anything now so he's more mobile everyday. I feel a big change in him this month, I guess just with the crawling he's realised there's a whole world out there...and he's off to explore!
I'm still breastfeeding but it's hardly worth it really for what he gets. He takes about 7-9oz cows milk mid morning and the same before bed, in a bottle. Should we be thinking about getting rid of the bottles? I just don't think a cup is quite as relaxing, but don't want him still to be drinking from a bottle when he really shouldn't. I always thought my bm would be enough and didn't even want him to have a bottle at all, but my boobs are desperately trying to give up!
Better go and plan this party! Happy birthday to Joseph, Lemmy, Logan, Alex and Thomas. I'll be back shortly after and let you all know how the party went! Suzi, I actually visualise what most people will eat (say, 3 sausage rolls, 2 vol-au-vents {or in my case, 15[blush!} handful of crisps, 2 sandwiches or whatever etc etc) and try to estimate from there. Sounds a bit OTT to assume "3 sausage rolls per person" but IYSWIM you can prevent yourself from catering for the 5,000!

Azure · 02/08/2006 13:08

Happy Birthday to all the LOs (and Mums). We've still got a couple of weeks to go before DS2's, and I haven't even thought about how to celebrate. DS1 will be five 9 days later - I suspect we'll have a small combined family thing. DS1 had an early birthday party for his school friends before the holidays. C&Cs mommy, sorry to hear about your MIL and everything - it must be a difficult time.

We got back from our holidays at the weekend - a week in Kent/Sussex followed by a week in northern France. We had a great time and were so lucky with the weather - it was often too hot. I can't say we relaxed exactly but it was nice spending the time as a family.

I stopped sterlising DS2's bottles when we went on holiday. He's actually on his old Nuk bottles with a spout rather than a teat, and his afternoon milk is in the cup version. It took me years to get DS1 away from a teat, so I was determined not to have that problem this time around. I also stopped boiling water once we got to France and am using Evian at the moment - he'll be on tap water when we run out. I'm tempted to still use formula rather than cows milk for his morning and evening drinks because of the extra nutrients - but am I just talking rubbish? Does anyone know if there is a benefit?

josey · 02/08/2006 14:38

ARG!!! you should have seen my dd last night at dinner time infact i should post a photo!! she had tomatoe pasta ate alot of it with the spoon then that was that in went the hands again she ended up looking like and oompalumpa her face was bright orange and her clothes and chair are recked I wont be feeding her that again!

I know what you mean about the birthdays Brambalina though my mum wont make it down until 2days after dds birthday so i will be stuck with my MIL trying to be centre of attention as always so im more tempted to lock the door and pretend we are out

its a cup with a spout dd has gone onto and she is loving it now as its easier for her to drink herself than holding bottles its been a very easy swap so im pleased - ds used the same type of cup for his milk till he was about 3 would only go to bed if he had it.
Azure i asked my HV and she said as long as they have a good balanced diet the only thing that the formula milk has is iron and if the diet is good enough there shouldnt be a problem she also told me that some babies have to go onto cows milk as soon as 6months i cant remember why though but thats reassuring if its ok for them to drink it that young

Eulalia · 03/08/2006 16:06

Hello, just popping over from the July Thread to say Happy Birthday to the August babies.

Nat777 · 05/08/2006 19:45

Kipper22- Thanks ever so much for the birthday wishes for Missy on the 8th. I still really cannot believe that a year has almost past!

I think we have got pretty much everything sorted, I have placed a box in the local paper, cake and candle is sorted and I have bought all of her pressies. Although I am still waiting for a couple to arrive, fingers crossed they arrive for Tuesday.

Birthday wishes and hugs and kisses to the others!

Panyanpickle77 · 05/08/2006 20:03
