August 2005 - The One With All The Birthdays!!!

Here we are everyone, a new thread, as promised ready for all these little ones to turn one.

Here's the link to the old thread

Miaou, I was just thinking of doing the exact same thing the other day, so much better than a baby book, as it really does record all of the milestones as they happen.

Another milestone today, ds2's first visit to the dentist. He was ever so good he let the dentist look at his teeth, which his brother never did. In fact the dentist got his first look at ds1's teeth ever today and it was his fourth visit!

We're all set for his birthday tomorrow, but I'm tired, it's hard work having 2 birthdays in a week and DH is thirty 2 weeks today, TOO MANY BIRTHDAYS!!!!! We're having friends round for an afternoon barbecue (DH will be getting in touch with his inner caveman over an open fire ) and people are dropping in as and when. Just hope that his cake is OK when it's delivered tonight.

Let you all know how things went after the party.

bramblina - my DS is the same. he gets the concept but isn't too good at it. He could probably tackle yogurt better than fork stuff as he uses his hands for anything finger foody.

I'm getting quite concerned that DS doesn't eat enough. What's normal at this age? He won't drink milk at all either. So in a day he will have some toast (half to one slice), a banana, a fruit/oat bar, slice of cheese on toast or similar, small biscuit, and dinner will be anything from a tablespoon of stew or something to a few sticks of carrot and a small piece of potato. He's even stopped eating his teatime yogurt. Weight gain wise he's gained about 1lb since he was 10 months and got mobile. He does seem bright and happy though - just not really growing a great deal... though he is naturally short.

queenrollo · 03/12/2006 21:09

suzi......ds has days when he barely seems to eat anything and then today he has been a real glutton. i did get a bit worried at one point because for what seemed like months he didn't seem to be eating anything.....half a slice of toast for breakfast, a few spoons of stew and a bit of apple for lunch and maybe a few bits of broccoli for tea....and most of that seemed to end up on the floor. if he seems bright and happy i wouldn't worry too much.....maybe some of the others will have some suggestions.

PanicPants · 04/12/2006 21:58

Queenrollo and Susi2, thats just like ds, it's a relief to hear others talk about how little their lo's are eating.

For tea today, ds had half a piece of toast which he played with and then threw away and some milk. Thats it. Nothing else

Azure · 05/12/2006 13:36

Bramblina sorry DH didn't get the job and Josey sorry to hear about your Grandma.

Queenrollo, what a great picture of your DS! My DS2 is mostly feeding himself - the plastic bib we have with a turned-up base to capture the fallen food is a god-send. Yoghurt he can manage, although usually moves on to spreading some around the table. The amount he eats varies hugely. Breakfast is his worst meal - an omelette is the most successful (we alternate different things), but then one day he'll gobble it down and a few days later will just drop it on the floor one piece at a time. He does drink a lot of milk - we haven't switched from formula (although he drinks from a cup with a spout) and he'll often have 7oz in the morning, 5 oz after his lunchtime nap and 8oz before bed. At the moment he is recovering from a bad cold & high temperature last week and is cutting some more teeth, including back ones.

PanicPressiePants · 05/12/2006 20:26

Ds is still not eating anything, but he's got a bit of a temperature today so I think he's poorly which would account for the lack of appetite.

Queenrolle, what a fantastic picture of your ds

queenrollo · 06/12/2006 11:05

thankyou for lovely comments about pic of ds.........he is now fascinated by the camera so it's getting increasingly hard to get good photos of him, he just wants to press all the buttons!!

suzi2 · 06/12/2006 14:48

lol QR - my MIL was just saying yesterday that she has to run backwards at the same speed as DS to have any hope of getting a piccie as he just keeps running towards it!

Good to know there are some other little/picky eaters out there.

pookey · 11/12/2006 21:47

Suzi 2 I havent taken a successful picture od ds in months for the same reason lol! You ds is lovely QR!

DS has been really poorly, vomiting loads last sat followed by ear and throat infection on wed

Pancipants what a nightmare about your childcare, did you sort anything out?

Azure · 12/12/2006 17:25

Sorry to hear your DS has been unwell Pookey. DS2 was poorly the other week and it was horrible seeing him so miserable, so unlike his normal self.

Well, we bought and decorated the Christmas tree and amazingly there has been very little interest from DS2 after the first surprise of it sitting in the hall. He only pulled off a couple of baubles and hasn't bothered since. We're not going to put presents underneath until Christmas Eve as I'm sure they wouldn't survive - DS1 would try to open then and DS2 would run them over with his trolley.

josey · 13/12/2006 13:38

DD is a terrible eater in the morning, she sometimes has half a weetabix and half a banana mixed, or some toast or porriage but its such a struggle she would just rather 3 cups of milk.

DD had that nasty cold poor thing couldnt swallow everytime she tried she screamed, i was so worried she had actually swallowed something behind my back!!

we put our tree up and the lights are of intrest but im highly shocked that she hasnt tried to pull it to bits, we do have snow globes though which have been battered about so now out of reach.

got some good new last night for a change, my mums husband got a new job so instead of her being a ferry ride and a 2 and a half hour car journy away when i move she will be moving within 10mins away from me, im so excitied as have not had her shall we say on tap!! since before my DS was born which was 7 years ago.(it was his bday on sat so took loads of boys to see Santa Claus3 it was great, but it was knackered after it, and when dd got up in the middle of the night i tripped and fell hit my collar bone on the bed end and pulled ligaments in my arm and shoulder area

pookey · 14/12/2006 20:41

Thanks Azure sorry your lo has been poorly too. next week I might avoid mother and baby stuff would be lovely if ds could be happy and well over xmas. We havent put up any decos yet and still loads of shopping to do

Josey thats really good about your mum. Sounds like your dd eats a healthy breakfast at least - quality not quantity ds eats loads of porridge each morning but staedily eats less food at the rest of his meals, which is actually what they advise as the best way to eat I suppose. I am a bad cook though and he doesnt get much fruit or veg

Toothbrushing really isnt happening he purses his lips shut - anyone else go this problem?

pookey · 14/12/2006 20:43

sorry about my diabolical spelling and grammer the teachers amongst you would have scribbled SPG in red biro all over my post

bramblina · 14/12/2006 20:50

Oh heavens, we're all in the wars!
Ds was bad for 2 weeks, then I realised he had cut all 4 pre-molars too, he was so ill. He's almost back to normal now and we came home last night from a few days down at my Dad's in Oban. It was nice for everyone to see ds, my step sister hadn't even met him so she was just delighted. H travelled well, slept most of the way so was later to bed but it all workewd out well in the end. He woke late on Tues night and was inconsolable for half an hour, and woke again at 3am this morning, so I'm putting it down to the teeth.
It's the gaelic toddler group meal out on Friday, but dh is still in France, fil is somewhere close, mil is going out on her work's night out so I can't get a babysitter. However it's my 30th on Saturday and mil is sitting for us then so I'm planning making it worth the while. Toddler meal is all paid for though so I'm quite sad to miss the opportunity.
After I said last time ds couldn't really manage much on a spoon I've really let him go for it, and he's doing very well with a fork. I'm quite pleased. He loves his food (daddy's boy) so the portions are quite something! Fortunately he hasn't bothered to throw the bowl round the room (yet).
Josey, great news for you. QR what a gorgeous ds! And any word on the cm front, PP? Pookey hope the infection has cleared up.
No decorations here yet, quite sad about that but will need to wait for dh to get the tree. They are always up for my birthday, so I really can't get in to the mood yet at all. Christmas or birthday!

Miaou · 14/12/2006 20:53

Hi guys. Ds is now trotting around quite happily now - in the last week he has graduated to walking about in places other than the home (eg playgroup) - he was quite clingy before then! Still not ready to walk around outside yet and I think we are a while away from that.

His speech is developing well - his latest phrase is "oh dee!" (oh dear) when he drops something - that and hiya and uh-oh are repeated several times a day!

We took him to the dd's school panto on Wednesday night and he was absolutely spellbound - sat still for an hour and a half just watching the action! Bless him. At one point he recognised dd2 on stage and went into full excited babble mode

Sorry to all those who are struggling with poor eaters. My dds were both terrible - ds, in contrast, is fantastic - a huge appetite and will eat anything and everything. In fact the only thing we've found he doesn't like is the white of an egg! I wish I could tell you the magic formula but I'm afraid it's just pot luck!

suzi2 · 14/12/2006 21:40

Does anyone else find that when threads drop off their "threads I'm on" list they totally forget they ever existed??? lol

Teeth brushing isn't really happening here either. The best we can do is to put a bit of toothpaste on a toothbrush, sing a silly song and get DS to chew the toothbrush for 10 seconds and then help me clean my teeth!

Food wise I'm a bad mum these days... DS doesn't get as much veg as he should because I don't make as much as I should. And he doesn't really like much veg. He loves fruit and dried fruit though. He's a really picky eater and doesn't like many proteins (eggs, meat etc) but adores all things bread based. Doesn't drink milk and has since gone off yogurt. So it's toast and banana a lot! Breakfast is when he east most - a banana, some dried fruit and between 1 & 3 slices of toast. The rest of the day is a hit or a miss but he seems to prefer snacking to proper meals.

pookey · 14/12/2006 22:28

Miaou hope your ms isnt too bad at the mo, the panto story was so sweet

Suzi snap snap with food; banana is a staple! I dont feel so bad now, guess we both have pregnancy as an excuse - how long have you got to go until the big day?

Bramblina - happy birthday for sat! its my 28th bday next thu. DP has got tickets for us, my mum, my sister and a friend to go to the Albert Hall for a christmas concert, which is lovely but I am really worried becuase ds is going to stay at a friends for the evening, usually my mum does all the evening baby sitting.

DS has been a little bundle of joy today and [whispers]the infection seems to be clear .

josey · 14/12/2006 22:55

DD has taken her first steps tonight she was so delighted she was holding onto the door frame and made her way to me on the sofa the smile on her face was fantastic and she through her arms round my neck and hugged me tight then giggled and tried again.

tooth brushing is a bit of a struggle she will only do it herself which i suppose it better than not at all, when im brushing mine she squeaks and points for hers but if i try she clams up!!

fav food is sausages/sausage rolls, grapes roast dinners, and at the moment fruit custard, also scrambled egg with grated cheese is a huge hit, also loves homemade soup of any kind, if only she would eat more breakfast she will eat it better if its after 10am!! cantbe doing her any harm as she hasnt really been poorly and is a heavy wee lump!!

my work xmas night out is tomorrow though i have cancelled as i havent been at work this week after my fall!next friday is my last day on the count down to our move, not that we have a firm date yet - im just delighted i dont have to go back after the hols!!

Happy birthday to you all with birthdays coming up

pookey · 15/12/2006 20:11

Congrats baby josey DS shuffled to dp tonight apparently, but didnt witness it myself still progress on the walking front is happening here too!

DS top foods are baked beans, bananas, fish fingers, toast, porridge, scrambled eggs and cheese on toast, and richtea biscuits

Not feeling christmasy at all, we have decided to bail on our tree and buy one of those treetop no decoration numbers

bramblina · 19/12/2006 21:20

Josey, have you tried having 2 toothbrushes- one for her to have a go, then one for your turn? We have done this since ds insisted on having a go. Before we got the 2nd one he just would not let go but now happy to take turns. Sometimes while he lets me do his he has a go at mine!

Fil ended up babysitting on Fri night and I had a lovely meal, first time I've been out on my own since ds was born (it's such a rare occasion that we tend to go out together when we do get the chance!) But unfortunately ds woke. Fil didn't phone, and I had decided against phoning him incase he was asleep (had been working all night) however when I got home ds was asleep on fil in livingroom, looking well worn out. He'd woken coughing and then got upset when couldn't find me. Fil said he just let him cry and eventually he gave in and fell asleep. I'm not sure if I'm grateful or not as the thought of ds being so upset just upsets me. Anyway he slept fine that night but the next night we were going out for my birthday and ds didn't settle till 10pm. My sister had come over, and pil had just arrived as ds was going to bed so with everything that was going on he wouldn't go to bed. He didn't wake that night, but the next 2 nights he took an hour to settle, quite unusual. Consequently he was late up so today didn't have a nap to see if he would revert back to a good bedtime so fell asleep at 7 but woke at 9, he had a burp but wanted more milk before he would go back down. Dh thinks he's all to pot as fil let him fall asleep on him the other night and he reckons that's what he wants now. My Mum suggested maybe he thinks I'm going to go again and isn't happy to be put to bed.
He's been great in the day, not at all clingy, but bedtimes are not usual. It could be to do with teeth though (there I go again!) so we'll see. We had a toddler group party today and one yesterday, which were really lovely. He is now very loving- towards other children, quite a few got hugs yesterday! He played really well and Santa didn't even freak him out (like he did me when I was young!)

Miaou · 19/12/2006 21:30

Hello everybody! Bramblina don't worry about ds not settling - put him down to bed as usual and he will get back into his routine

Josey - congrats on dd's first steps!

Ds is so funny - he was crawling under the desk today towards the bin, and dh started to tell him off thinking he was trying to empty it out - but when he looked ds had found some scrap paper and was putting it in the bin!! And yesterday he was at my mum and dad's for lunch and my dad yawned - and ds said "night night!" - lol! My mum couldn't get over how good he is - tell him not to touch things (ornaments, computer) and he doesn't. My dds were the same at this age and my mum always claimed it was because they were girls (because their boy cousins never did as they were told) - it is so nice to be able to prove her wrong!!

queenrollo · 20/12/2006 19:38

hi all.....i've been ill the last three days with a headache. dp sent me to bed at 6pm last night, and i got up again at 10pm had some food and went back to bed. i slept through till 7am when ds woke us and dp had to have the day off work as i felt so bad......i went back to bed, got up at 10am ate a banana and went back to bed till 1.30pm. apparently i got up at 7am and i collapsed in the hallway as dp was on his way back from the loo.
the pain has subsided now but i feel spaced out, and it was the christmas party at toddler group today so we missed it
Dr has given me some tablets to help with the tension in my neck but it's just so typical. i haven't done any housework and the house is a mess for christmas.....

bramblina · 20/12/2006 21:12

Thanks for the confidence boost Miaou. Ds woke lasnight around 10pm, settled well but at 2am wanted a drink of milk. Tonight he went to bed at 7 and woke a little while ago. I just lifted him and put him back down after a minute. I do hope it is a pain of some sort, rather than an insecurity, IYSWIM. Time will tell.
Oh QR how awful. What a darling partner you have though! Hope you're geting better.

PanicPressiePants · 20/12/2006 21:43

QR you poor thing, you sound like you're having a rough time of things. I really hope your head doesn't get any worse.

Bramblina - just keep trying with the sleeping. Although we've noticed that ds has started to wake again in the night, (about 3 nights a week) where he won't settle until I've gone in and cuddled him. Then he gives me a beaming smile. So I'm wondering if this is insecurity, as he's not ill, or in pain. I really must try to nip it in the bud.

On the CM front, a friend of mine has had ds up until christmas, and on friday dp and I are going to look around a nursery to see what we think for the new year.

Well, incase I don't post again before christmas, Have a fabulous second christmas with all the lo's. Can you believe that last year they were barely 4 months old??!!!!

Tigerlion · 21/12/2006 09:51

I have only just got back on to MN after a few months off as I have been kept quite busy at home. Eloise was born on the 22nd of October and is such an easy little thing compared to her brother, waking at 4am for a feed as opposed to DS1 who was up at all hours, at least 3 times a night! I am currently typing with my left hand as my right hand is holding Missy on my lap.
Her older brother is looking after her very well, bring his dummy or a bottle to her whenever she cries and he seems concerned when she cries even more when he tries to stuff the object in her face! Even though DS1 is doing a lot of gabbling he does not say any words as such yet but he does took to Eloise in a high pitched tone - obviously putting on a baby voice for her, when he is just a baby himself. It is so sweet. Breastfeeding lasted six weeks as it proved to be so difficult to do whilst trying to look after DS1 at the same time. As he started walking just after she was born, there have been many falls (with a fair amount of blood!) so I just could not feed Eloise whilst constantly worrying about him.
DH was sacked the same week E was born and sued by his ex employers tens of thousands of pounds for an email that should not have been sent. He has had to pay with a lot of our savings that were being kept for the children. So despite E being born, we have had a pretty rough time over the past few months but it has been lovely having DH at home with me to look after the LOs. He fortunately has a new job starting in January so I am going to have to get used to looking after the two LOs on my own.
I will try to post photos of the two munchkins once that I have a photo of them where neither is crying!
Have a lovely Christmas everyone and Congratulations to you ladies with bumps. You forget so quickly what newborns are like and I can't describe that overwhelming feeling of holding them for the first time. True little miracles!

josey · 21/12/2006 15:54

so much for the joys of xmas, we all seem to be going though it one way or another, DH gran passed away on Sunday so the spirit of Xmas has been knocked away from our house a bit.

I finish work tomorrow, in prep for us moving although that has been put off im so happy at getting to just be at home with the kids again.

DD has become so funny lately she has a big personality, if you tell her off she makes a huffing sound turns her back then glowers at you over her shoulder im dreading the teens already.

tigerlion, nice to hear from you, and congrats to the new member of the family
