March 2013 - time to wrap them all up in tinsel

Old thread here.

worse we're like Plonky on the timings - we keep mealtimes and milktimes separate. I spotted something in Evil Baby Whisperer that suggested around this age milk should be at the time you'd give a snack. Thinking about it, that's pretty much what we do - milk at the crack of dawn, 11am, 3pm and bedtime, food at 9am, 1pm and 5pm. It seems to work, and Fartypants is definitely in the process of reducing milk herself. Those middle two feeds, she's having about four ounces now.

How is the worselet on mush? Does she show any preferences? If we were sticking with baby led weaning we'd be getting absolutely nowhere. Savoury mushes, she'll try a mouthful then get distracted by the cat. Fruit mushes, she practically inhales. For a reduced stress option, can I suggest getting yourself to Asda? They've a hell of a range of cheap fruity mushes, and then at least you're not having to throw away purees you've spent hours lovingly creating.

Incidentally, six month old Molly may love her porridge, but all that means is that Molly's a total weirdo - porridge is vile. It's weetabix all the way round here, with mashed banana in.

eco hang in there, it does get better. How long until 37 weeks for you?

I am thanking my heathen gods we don't have crawling yet. Nappy changes with rolling are bad enough. Especially when it's a particularly horrific one.

Alas, Plonky, that's my only claim to fame. Said best man was of mixed ethnicity, and for a long time not much was publicly known about his white father. Some researcher got in touch with my dad about it a few years back. It's a cool claim to fame, but unfortunately everyone in England's heard of Mandela but nobody's heard of his best man. Other fame-claims, hmm... My cousin competed in last year's Olympics. Didn't win though, so probably doesn't count.

Apparently Bridlington's been hit pretty badly. I've an uncle up that way and he's been posting rather soggy photos on facebook.

The crying it out wasn't so bad once we turned the monitor off. How on earth did I manage to misspell that as minotaur? Anyroad, she was only crying for forty five minutes. Could've been a lot worse. The shush pat thing, I considered for a moment, but given that me actually picking her up wasn't stopping her, I didn't think a bit of shushing was going to do anything at all except get her more worked up.

Ah, we're back to local news, excellent! Kingston Retail Park's waist deep. That's what you get for building a shopping centre on a flood plain right next to an estuary so large you can see it on a world map.

We were up, no surprise there, but for once not hunger. I think the worselet is just unwell to be honest. She has a horrible cough and a windy stomach - bad combination. DH went in to get her up at 7am, but she is determinedly having a lie in. All that midnight partying takes its toll eventually Grin

Hope you guys aren't too knackered after a rough night. I've bags under my eyes that could carry Victoria Beckham's luggage.

No flooding round these parts. No storm even. I think we had a 10 minute flash down pour late last night, but nothing to write home about. I hope those of you on the east coast are warm and dry and not flooded out.

It's Friday, nearly the weekend. Yay! Plan for today - we're going back to baby lead weaning. I've had it with food stress. Food shouldn't be stressful. If she eats she eats, if she doesn't she gets milk. The font of all knowledge that is Annabel Karmel (which may or may not be spelt like that) states babies often won't eat when unwell. The worselet is definitely unwell. It's a theory anyway!

Go on the Worselet! Yes it's true, poorly babies just want milk. Hope she's better soon Worse, and try to just relax about food. DS hasn't read that he should be crawling by now, and it's hard not to stress when I see that all the other babies are more mobile than him. But he'll get there and so will the Worselet.

And how can you resist her cute little mush? The latest photos are so cute!

Very sad news. What a man. And what a claim to fame stormy, I hope you pull that one out as often as I mention "my mum's first boyfriend was Pete Tong".

Talk about first world problems, just waiting to hear if we've still got a beach hut in Suffolk. Hope you remain unaffected stormy, have we got any other east coasty types? Ooh hull is just about to be shown on the telly... There's a bank with fish on the floor apparently.

Worse- how was last night? We had our first shocker in a while. I blame snot.

Um- so, stabby ovary pains during a period isn't just what happens to everyone? I truly just assumed it was normal, and have never mentioned it to anyone... Didn't even occur to me it would be linked to PCOS... What an idiot I am. Shall book an appointment for next week.

Right. Porridge for the tiny one, muesli for me. I seem to be losing the weight again, and have just dropped under another milestone, I'm now less than 100kg. Also 8lb less than when I got pregnant, which is nice to know!

Awesome Gerry, and for the benefit of everyone else on this thread can I just say Gerry looks gorgeous, super fit and healthy.

Pete Tong? Well done that mum! My family's claim to fame.... err.... we don't have one Grin. Must try harder.

I hope the snot didn't come from here, as we've had more than our fair share of it lately. Apologies if it did.

Time to get up and out here I think. I've just thrown the tiddler's specially bought 'all babies love it' muesli away, she's had her milk, so all is as it should be.

DH had to go down to where the boat is moored at midnight as the surge tide was on its way - he had to let the ropes off a bit as the water was nearly a metre above the jetties and it would have floated away if the ropes had snapped Shock and then he went to work at 5am. He's had no sleep so I shall overlook the wake of cr*p he seems to have left all over the house and try not to have a go when he gets home Confused
plonky yay for no work for a while, boooo for no longer having easy access to wine.
Stabbing pains? Yep, get em checked out.
Report
BettyOff · 06/12/2013 14:47

Gerry there's no harm in getting the pains checked out just in case you've got a cyst bigger than 5cm (as with Wors, I did and only found out once it popped...ouch) but the stabby pains are pretty normal and very likely nothing to worry about it. Obviously you can go on the pill to down regulate PCOS but as mbay posts have mentioned this often comes with its own problems. Unfortunately PCOS is one of those that you often can't do a massive amount about, although your diet will help regulate it by improving your response to insulin.

Madam can join the group of poorly babies. She's been up with a manky nappy in the middle of the night for the past 3 nights & is off her food too (I think her and Worselet are taking their namesakes literally). Roll on a week when we've all got happy, healthy sleeping babies!

Plonk, congrats on finishing the crappy job!!!

I have a milk question. They're not supposed to have cows' milk as a drink before the age of one. Is this because formula is tailored to meet a baby's nutritional requirements, or is there something weird about cows' milk that means they'll catch fire if it's not adulterated with weetabix?

Dunno about milk. You can use it in cooking, I do know that.

In other news, we have a tooth! First one. We are so behind...

StormyBrid · 06/12/2013 16:20

Be thankful, pud. Teeth can be a right bastard. Going nine months without getting any hassle from them must have been lovely!

Friday afternoon, DD at my dad's, chilling out and playing Warcraft, phone beeps. Text from my dad. Two words. "She crawled!"

Way to go mini Stormy though! We have to be close i fear so child proofing is on the agenda now dh has done his flexible working form

Cheers plonky to the end of nasty jobless Grin

Gerrythetootallgiraffeswife · 06/12/2013 18:30

Stormy, I believe it's mainly because of formula being nutritionally designed, and partly because too much might upset some tummies (although that's far less of an issue by this age). I think by now if you had some kind of milk emergency for one feed then a one off bottle of full fat milk would be ok. Certainly fine for cooking/weetabix etc.

We hit 9 months tomorrow, still no teeth here!

Report
StormyBrid · 06/12/2013 18:48

Good to know re the milk. I ask because DD's pretty much giving up on formula, it seems. First bottle she'll just about clear and then go back to sleep, two daytime ones she's only been drinking four ounces and the past couple of days even that's been under protest, and last night at bedtime she announced she was done after an ounce. I've long suspected she just plain doesn't like formula. But if she has her way she'll be on ten flozzes a day and I'm worried about dehydration. If she likes cows' milk, it'd be handy if I could give her that instead during the day.

Turns out the crawling was commando style rather than up on the knees. My dad put her on the playmat in the middle of the room and went to sit on the sofa. A moment later she was tugging at his shoelaces. I guess the time to babyproof everything is finally upon us.

Stormy crawling! Oh what a pain for you how exciting! In the spirit of solidarity I shall share with you what I have learnt in the last week (and Something has known for ohhhh about 3 months):

Anything that hangs is there for the sole purpose of tug of war. Curtains, electric cables, towels, blinds.... anything

Phone chargers are for chewing. Especially when plugged in

Babies have magic powers. They can disappear. Always check under the sofa

Cupboards are for opening, and emptying

Fireplaces and stoves are fascinating

Enjoy!

Any oh I think DH has earned some slack. After all he did save the boat's life. He's a hero!! Sort of....

Betty I'm seriously hoping Betty-baby isn't a Worselet in the making. Although there is some good news on that front.... dinner was a joy! We went baby lead, with added mucking about. It involved singing, pulling faces and me pinching food out of her hand and eating it. Not one for the local pub perhaps, but despite eating virtually nothing she did try chicken, apples, and courgette.... all firsts... and laughed all through it! All together now... YAY!!!!

worse yay that's amazing news on the food front! Maybe worselet just wanted to be in control. Hope the testing continues and eventually turns into eating.

Sympathy to betty and all those with poorly babies - hope everyone starts feeling better soon and regains appetite. We are still waiting for our first cold or illness of any kind - obviously I produce awesome antibodies but know it can't last.

I'm so glad DD can't crawl yet - it sounds terrifying! DD loves just sitting and playing and occasionally reaches. She can sit all day without support and occasionally goes on her tummy and then pushes herself up again and sometimes does a bottom shuffle to reach what she wants but that's about it. I'm not rushing her to do more just yet!

so many milestones whilst I've been in the pantry! teeth pud! actual food worse! crawling stormy! end of job plonk! first temperature Gerry! that last one's not so great (may it be short lived Gerry) but hearty back slaps to all other babies. lovely to hear about.
baby Gerry must have inspired ecobaby because she's well into downward facing dog now and today pulled herself to standing for first time which is exciting in this baby centric world. we also have a chesty rattle and lots of snot. my antibodies must suck handsomely because we only had three cold free days since last one, but at least we're building resistance ahead of the snot fest that will be child minder. I'll gloss over pantry gate but will say we're on day five of the Kent/Sussex sans daddy tour and we're ready for our own beds. I'm holed up in rusthall tonight and return Home to the flood plain that is Norfolk tomorrow. which reminds me, lovely heroic dh any!
in the spirit of spreading some Friday cheer I shall share and anecdote: there are three babies in the house tonight and as we waited to get into baby fest bath a naked eco baby sat sideways on my lap on some stairs opposite the bathroom door chatting to sil and bil. we chatted absentmindedly and then sil alerted me to eco baby pulling a poo face. instinctively my hand went down under her bum just in time to literally catch a poo. sil and bil had the pleasure of seeing the poo actually exit my lovely baby's bum and neatly into my hand. Grin but Blush what a classy girl! prunes for breakfast tomorrow.
right, bedtime. sorry to have been sulking and to have missed your news everyone. happy weekend to all.

Stormy drop one of the day time feeds. DS is only on two bottles a day, so 14 flozzes. He automatically started drinking water.

Pud ooh a tooth!

Gerry I forgot to mention, Hanson were on NBC breakfast this week...they're all grown up!

We are at the pils. I am dying of suspected sinusitis (hence being awake at this hour) and would really like to go home!

Oooh I'm angry. A predictably bad night last night, which ended with DH heading to the spare room and me sharing my bed with a kicky sweaty grumpy little bundle of joy. He was booked on some jolly with friends today. After a lovely nights sleep for him and a shitty one for me, he got up with her at 6.30. 10 brownie points. However, he didn't give her a bottle, (he forgot-minus 50 brownie points) just sat in front of postman pat. Then at 7.30, delivered her back to me and declared himself to be off for the day. (Minus 100 points). I know for a fact that if roles were reversed he wouldn't have let me go because he wouldn't know what to do with a poorly baby, and I wouldn't have gone anyway because it's clearly unfair.

Hooray for food worse! Fingers crossed it continues!

Hello up there eco! I'm just down the hill a bit!

Well done to new crawlers, dd has been at it for a while but still doesn't actually seem very interested in going anywhere... She's only interested in head stands. She's doing one as we speak. Crazy baby.

Wonder where KF/yummychocolate is? Haven't seen her for a while. Are you there yummy? If you're lurking come back and say hello!

Have lovely Saturdays all
