Angelico sorry to hear such sad news. I will be thinking of you and your family today. You should be proud that you gave him a beautiful great-neice to love before he went.

Squid DD has sat up a couple of times with one of those semi-circle cushions behind her. Her back is getting straighter each time so I think we are getting there.

FirstTineForEverything Nice night? lol. DD went down at 8pm, woke at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 3:15, then up 5:30. No sign of the end of this sleep regression yet!

Weaning I'm inclind to agree about baby rice, though I see it has it's purpose (as do jars). If you're going down the puree route, the Annabel Karmel puree recipe is quite good for ideas. I think we are going to mostly do BLW but will do some puree things. I plan to give things that are supposed to be purees (porridge, yoghurt, soup etc) as purees and do finger foods too. She's 6 months on 1st April an I'm quite looking forward to it!

Smorgs · 06/03/2013 09:05

Urgh, on holiday and I have developed tonsillitis Sad Cruel fate.

Smorglet is nowhere near sitting up nor bearing weight on his legs - is he behind? Should I be doing something to help him?

I had similar feelings about baby rice but was then told by a British midwife over here that it was just a variety of rice with very small grains and didn't contain any additives... Is this wrong? I've never seen it for sale here anyway, the French seem to prefer these cereals you add to the milk. I honestly saw one that was caramel flavour the other day Confused

squidkid · 06/03/2013 10:17

Smorgs noooo please don't worry. All babies develop differently and do things in different orders. Learning to sit any time before 9 months (adjusted age if premature) is within the normal range!

Sorry to hear about tonsillitis, rubbish. In my hardest job a couple of years ago, I had cold after cold after flu working on a respiratory ward, I jetted off to canary islands for some winter sun... it rained every day, I had an ear infections, and the locals said they had never seen weather like it Angry It feels so unfair being sick on holiday...

Londonmrss · 06/03/2013 10:55

Smile, what is natural movement theory?
Oh and on boob refusal or losing interest, just don't assume it's permanent or a weaning cue. My dd refused and screamed at me every time I tried to feed for 3 weeks back in Jan. It was a phase- it just seems to be how she can react to developmental phases and it got better.

OP posts:
Londonmrss · 06/03/2013 11:45

do you need to start giving vitamin supplements when you start weaning? iron and vitamin d...?

OP posts:
Cherrychopsticks · 06/03/2013 13:28

Smile, I'm coming back to the UK on Saturday for 3 weeks. Can't wait!
Not really looking forward to the flight though, it's bad enough without a baby, and I don't think the sleep regression is over - it seems to be very up and down, with a few bad nights followed by good nights and repeat. What's the betting we're in the bad phase on the flight? Oh well, nothing I can do.

Feeling really guilty and sad for DH that I'm taking DS away for 3 weeks. Sad

I can't catch up with the thread, I'm sorry, so I'm not even going to attempt it. Things have been getting busier and busier here, with the run up to going back to work in April I've had to go in a few times and organising the trip home, and DS deciding not to nap in the day any more.
Also been finding things quite difficult as I have a really bad back, which makes it hard to carry DS in a sling or just in arms for any length of time. Find it quite upsetting and frustrating.

DS not losing interest in milk at all! Still feeding at 2 hour intervals most of the time.

Natural movement theory sounds interesting, is that similar to what you're doing Oren?

That's rubbish about the tonsillitis Smorgs, bloody typical isn't it?

londonmrss according to the info I was given by the weaning nurse from 6 months you need to give drops containing vit d, a & c if baby is having less than 500ml formula a day. She didn't mention iron supplements but it does say at 6 months they will have used up there birth stores so when you wean you need to include some iron rich foods like meat or dried apricots. I was told to take vit d while bf so I guess at 6 months I stop that and give dd the drops instead? I think there's a bit of a rickets resurgence such has got ppl worried.

first I think hair loss and fatigue is par for the course but not joint pain and the rest (although my knees are knackered) so might be worth seeing about the test?

Orenishii · 06/03/2013 15:45

cherry yeah kinda, if i'm on the same page as smile, it's essentially not putting them into a position they can't get out of themselves, not trying to rush anything like propping them - unless they indicate they prefer to be upright - etc. Natural movement theory suggests babies will find their way to doing everything from a lying on the floor position, without the need for any equipment or showing how, and that they actually like to hang out on the floor as preference. That they don't need to be taught rolling, crawling, walking and don't need help facilitating these things - even including developmental delays, giving babies the freedom to develop these things through an innate impulse as they learn about their bodies.

We're not total purists either - I've had DS upright a lot and we have the door bouncer but to be honest, he went through a phase of crying on his back and immediately laughing when pulled onto his feet, and I don't know much greater indication of wanting to be upright than that! But I generally try not to prop him up too much, I roughhouse him a lot, let him roll face forward to the floor, leave him on his back until he cries and generally just join in with what movement he has and leave him to it. He's basically constantly moving around on his belly, back by shuffling around up and down, or rolling off my legs onto the floor.

Zara1984 · 06/03/2013 17:39

You're all a lot more versed than me on baby activities and development! Very interesting to read!

Thinking of starting a baby sensory course (only heard of it through you lot). Is it good or a swizz? What sort of things do you do? Is Does 100 euro (about 86 GBP) for 7 weeks sound about right?

Ok so DS did another one of his guzzle-two-bottles-in-a-row tricks and is on course for taking 6x240ml bottles today. Confused Couldn't get hold of health nurse so I called Aptamil help line. Jesus I know formula companies are meant to be evil but their nurses are bloody helpful. Well they I suppose they should be given how much money I (and statistically, most parents in the UK and Ireland) spend on their products. She said that it can be totally normal at this age for ff babies to do a double-bottle trick in the afternoons. Said that unless he starts regularly going beyond 6x240ml bottles a day there's no need to switch to hungry baby milk - that is meant to be for very very very greedy babies who are pretty much just eating themselves sick! Also unlike health nurse said I should hold off weaning and just give him more milk (as you have all said).... just to add to the confusion! So there you have it. Perhaps that is of use to anyone worried their FF baby is going to turn into the Goodyear Danone Blimp.

Elpis · 06/03/2013 18:51

I'm going to give Abidec multivitamin drops from 6mo because we're bf and I worry DS won't get enough from sunshine. It's not just rickets - lack of D is also linked to MS, so of course I'm super-paranoid about that. Abidec can be a bit elusive in pharmacies and Boots so I order it from Boots.com with their 3 for 2 on vitamins.

It was LOVELY to meet up today! Londonlivvy, DD loves you! Can you come round and entertain her whenever?

horseylady · 06/03/2013 18:53

first yes to joints!! Relaxin stays in the body for up to 6 months. I feel them quite frequently.

Elpis · 06/03/2013 18:54

Sorry for the triple post - in a basement on 3G. Having my hair done. Second evening off since DS was born! DH flew in from NY this morning and is off to Prague tomorrow morning...

smileyhappymummy · 06/03/2013 18:59

angelico have been thinking about you today, and about your uncle who sounds like a lovely, lovely man.
London lot, am very jealous of your meet up! Maybe we should do something up north sometime....anyone tempted?! I think I might get some abidec drops too, am uncomfortably aware that I wasn't great about taking vitamins through pregnancy and so my vitamin d stores are probably not great....
Main exciting news here has been rolling from back to front (had done front to back before). Typically she mastered this new skill yesterday when dh was at home with her and I was at stupid work. Felt rather jealous which is ridiculous cos I get so much more time with her but still.....
firsttime I reckon all of those symptoms could be normal postpartum but equally could be hypothyroidism and it's more common postnatally, no harm popping along to GP and having a chat +/- blood test.
smorgs get well soon, miserable being poorly on holiday just Not Fair.
cherry hope your trip over here goes well and that you're alright, you sound a little bit stressed and pressured (which is entirely understandable and I might also be completely misreading it but just wanted to say hope you're ok).

OctoberOctober · 06/03/2013 19:20

first I have got all those symptoms too but am putting it down to generally being knackered running around after 2 children and generally feeling A bit run down.

Dp sent me off to spare room last night and did night feed, letting me catch up on some sleep as I feel like it is really catching up with me. Felt like it barely made any inroads though, still fucking knackered. Hmm Sorry for the moan, I know a lot of you are up much more than once in the night so this seems like complaining about nothing but I've always loved my sleep and am really missing it!

londonlivvy · 06/03/2013 20:33

Elpis your DD is a fab little girl with the most infectious laugh. Wild be delighted to play with her again! Fab to meet you and nenehoo too. Can't get over nenehoo s DS hair. The best Mohican ever. And cant get over how tall elpis DS is. Think he could give huffle's DS a run for his money!

DF has manflu. Sigh. I hope he doesn't give it to me as if I'm ill I won't be able to spend the day in bed.

DD is getting less keen on bottles every day. She used to take them no probs. I suspect it's because one of the daily bottles now contains the yucky formula so she's resisting all of them, just in case, though the other two contain pure my milk. Hoping she will get used to the yucky formula soon.

Smiley I think that kyyria was expressing an interest in a northern meet up. I think turnwest is up north too (though clearly I am being a nobber southerner assuming that all "north" is the same place).

October I felt the same after DF did one night - somehow worse, as though my body realised what it was missing. I hope you feel better soon.

First, argh re the continued crappy nights, same deal here.

Cherry, you sound super busy! Hope your trip all goes to plan.

Are the vitamin d drops advised for everyone who's not on formula?

cherrycherry41 · 06/03/2013 23:02

Im up north too! Very jelous of the london meet up, need mummy friends asap but no baby groups near :( wahhh

cherrycherry41 · 06/03/2013 23:25

*jealous even Hmm

Woolybob · 07/03/2013 01:09

Here is the link to the nhs vitamin info:

Using mn app so hope that worked! Am also in the north! That covers a slightly bigger geographic area than london but is probably quicker + cheaper to travel around [smug hardy northern lamb face]

Woolybob · 07/03/2013 01:12

Hmmm will try again from interweb on phone....

zara we go to baby sensory, is mixture of songs signing and play with feathers/balloons etc. Usually has a theme (France/space etc) and a puppet show at the end. DD loves it but can be a bit cheesy. £86 for 7 seems dear thou ours is £6 a class.
