Here's the new place to chat about all our wonderful babies, while they still are babies.

DS2 has also been more difficult to settle at night- basically since he's learnt to stand up in his cot. He now holds onto the side and wails. I go back in, place him & back down again, but this can go on for ages. As there is also DS1 to look after it's so tempting to stay in there until he is asleep, but I worry it's storing up problems for the future. DS1 has always been an early riser but the last week or so it's been around 4.30am (4.10 this morning), which is just ridiculous. He doesn't go back to sleep, either. I hate to say it, but roll on winter.

Queenrollo, I hope it's just a temporary thing with your DS. I don't know anything about glucose intolerance, I'm afraid.

Nat777 · 06/07/2006 20:19

Thank god for that! Reading some of the recent messages have really made me feel like I am not alone! Missy has suddenly become a complete nightmare to get to bed, admittedly once down she does sleep right through to somewhere between 6.30-8.30am but we are having real difficulties getting her to sleep even though she is really tired.

Reading your messages certainly makes me think that it is to do with a phase for the LO's current ages. I think maybe the hot and sticky weather may also have something to do with it but maybe I am clutching at straws!

We have ranged from having her up until 10pm to putting her to bed at 7.30pm screaming! We have decided to hold firm and put her to bed at her normal time whether she is awake or not and leaving her to settle herself, she normally does within about 10 minutes. I am ever so paranoid though as we only moved into our new house 6 weeks ago and I dread to think what the elderly neighbours think when they hear her going mad!

colinandcaitlinsmommy · 06/07/2006 21:39

I feel badly for those of you with LO's waking up early. Caitlin seems to have shaken her habit of waking up between 4-4:30 and is making it until almost 7. She's finally able to fall asleep on her own now. DS did that at 4 mo, it was getting a bit ridiculous. I feel maybe we have cracked the sleeping thing, as she has only slept through the night a handful of times before, and the past few weeks she's only woken up once at night, and that was because she had her blanket over her head and was afraid.

We're in our temporary house now for the next few months. It is really, really not my thing. I'm very blah with the whole situation, the kids are sleeping in their travel beds, and we are living with so little of our stuff. In the past week we've been here, though, she's gotten so happy. She's even seemed to have shaken her lactose intolerance issues and has had bits of cheese and yogurt without any problems. I know what you mean about what do you feed them, Queenrolo. I feel I've hardly fed her any variety at this age compared to DS.

I haven't gotten to read everything, but it appears at a quick glance you guys are having temperatures that are almost what we get here. I feel for you. It is actually quite cool today, but last week it got to be 108.

Hope everyone is doing well, hope to catch up on the thread now phase 1 of the packing and unpacking is done.

bramblina · 06/07/2006 22:06

Dss appetite returned on Monday, and today he is back to himself, it's lovely .

QR stickle bricks are just great aren't they? And the arts& crafts box a good idea, we'll go for some of that. Azure, can your lo actually slide down a slide properly? I think ds would end up in a huge heap if I attempted that! LOL

Josey the finger puppets are a fantastic idea, thanks. I bought a book set which had a puppet for each book (9) when pg so will take them, thanks .

Miaou, sooo sweet! Ds waved goodbye to me tonight as dh took him to bed, aw.

Suzi, could you cut the naps a bit? 3 Weeks ago dss appetite shot through the roof and he started taking a good hour for a nap, I think it all coincides with him getting on the move (well, not really!) IYSWIM and if he did as you lo is I think I would see how to manipulate his daytime sleep? Is he overtired when going to bed and fighting it? Or perhaps teething again? Sorry to hear about this, it's so hard when they're like this...and as you're all agreeing I'm wondering when ds is going to start playing up...we still have his changing mat up high as he just lays there and is no problem (obv. we don't leave him) he has only rolled on to his front 3 times! He hates it! However when he realises he can get about it will be a whole other story- the cot is still in the high position, on a morning he just lays there, arms outstretched, waiting for one of us to pick him up! While he was ill he was sleeping to 9 or 10am but this morning we were back to 8am! Oh no! And the night before last he woke at 5am for a feed. How wierd things can vary so much. At the moment though I have to say he is just a joy.

We only had one day of high temp- yesterday, so ds went to bed in short pjs. Woke this morning, had kicked the covers off (not keen on the next size up grobag's fitting-anyone else) and had very cold legsbaaaad Mummy!

C&C'smommy, hope you settle for the short term in your new place, can imagine what chaos you've had getting sorted!

QR I think they can grow out of intolerances that they develop at this age, around 2yrs. Soya milk is an alternative (unsure if good idea before 1yr old) but the ordinary one contains sugar, there is an unsweetened version. Alpro make a good selection of yogurts. Your hv should have some good advice. I have a lactose intolerance apparently- had my hair analysed a while back- but it has never bothered me so hopefully your lo will also grow out of it.

PanicPants · 08/07/2006 09:24

Hi all, just a quick note to say hope all the poorly babes are better. Ds is a lot better in himself but now on antibiotics again for his chest .

We're off on holiday today for a week in cornwall so fingerscrossed for sunny but not too hot weather!

As for birthday presents I'm not sure. We have got ds a pull along wooden train, but I do like the idea of a trike of some sort. I can see him zooming around in one creating havoc!

kipper22 · 08/07/2006 13:29

Have a lovely time panicpants! We've been thinking more about the birthday present. DS has developed a habit of holding on to the side of his cot and almost jumping up and down. We've seen some baby trampolines (I think they're for 1-3 years) and I'm very tempted...!

suzi2 · 08/07/2006 19:11

At the moment, ALDIs stores have a play tent and tee pee pack with a tunnel to link them for £12.99. And next week (I think!) they're doing mini bouncy castles for £16.99. I have to say I'm tempted by the bouncy castle although I'm not sure my DS culd use it! Kipper - my friend jsut got a baby trampoline for her DDs 2nd birthday and all the kids were going daft for it. I tried DS on it and he was a little short to get a good hold of the handle - but he's a really short baby so other 1 yr olds would probably be fine!

josey · 10/07/2006 13:46

Hi all just home from my kid free weekend in Italy for my cousins wedding it was lovely BUT!! there was the most awful rain and thunderstorms and we are home with no bags or anything as the airport have lost them Whoops(DH hire Kilt)I also really missed the kids as there were a few there but the journy we had to do would just have been really crewl

one of the Bridesmaids had her kids and she was telling my her nursery cut her DDs afternoon nap to 20mins power nap as apparently that is enough time for them to recharge and they will not have reached a deep sleep in 20mins for them to be grumpy when woken this was done as they're dd wouldnt go to bed at night and was up at silly times in the morning im thinking of trying it wil our dd.
not that im that good at being firm with those kind of things seeing dd is still asleep and has slept through lunch

Suzi I got a bouncy castle for DD out of koscos she doesnt jump about much but loves the movement and there are balls(the ball pool type) which she loves to play with-i just have the issue of keeps DS and all his friend off it!

I cant remember from ds and seeing you all talking about cows milk was just wondering when they can start having it? i still us formula for breakfast and drinking but have made some cheese sauce and she has been ok

Tigerlion · 11/07/2006 21:41

Just back from a lovely week away in Italy. If anyone is looking for an idea for a holiday which will give them lots of rest, definitely try Club Med. It is all inclusive where they had the most amazing food, branded drinks and snacks available all day and really well organised activities. We did loads of sailing and tennis and much as we missed DS we got so much rest. We dropped him off each morning at 9.30 at the baby club and collected him at 5.30.They put him to sleep, fed him and looked after him brilliantly there. Even though they had loads of toys, baby paddling pool etc, DS's favourite activity was crawling backwards and forwards under the 10 highchairs pretty much non-stop. Everyday we would sleep for about two hours after lunch which was bliss! I just needed a holiday where I was going to get loads of rest in preparation for the new baby in October and this was perfect. Highly highly recommended!

Josey, as far as the pill that helps babies sleep on planes is concerned I forget the name but my sister in law used it for her baby and it made her sleep throughout a 13 hour flight when she was 5 months old. Ask your doctor about it and she will be able to tell you exactly what it is and give you a prescription. Do it soon to make the most of the free prescription service.

Bramblina, I do hope that your baby is better. It is so hard when they are ill, isn't it? If only they could talk and then they would be able to tell us exactly where it hurt etc. Poor little things!

I saw something that I may get for DS which I saw on an ebay shop. It is a bean bag chair that lasts until around 3 years old. It has a harness type thing that you can strap the LOs in with when they are still small and is really comfortable. I have seen the beanbag armchairs in many shops but it is far more expensive than this one which sells for around £25.

Azure, DS is also standing in his cot, playpen etc. Sorry to ask something really silly, but is there any chance that they can fall forwards out of their cot? It is on its bottom setting but he is quite tall and his shoulders are level with the cot rail. I am worried that he will try to get out in a few months time. What is the best to prevent this from happening?

Also, we are trying to wean DS off dummies. We only give them to him when he is sleeping or really crying but would like to get them out all together. Any suggestions as to what we can do?

What are people doing for first birthdays? It goes so quickly, doesn't it. Before we know it they will be fully grown up!

bramblina · 12/07/2006 22:10

I weighed ds last Tuesday, he'd lost a pound and a half in weight from being ill poor thing, and still isn't back up to the 22lb 12oz he was. I'm almost glad as boy, was he getting heavy! He's looking fine though.
He crawled today! We really didn't think he would but now there's no stopping him. He's a slow mover, but very careful (except the head, ouch) and gets where he wants to. Tonight he almost crawled to the bathroom, got closer and closer to the wall as he went along the hall- went to sit down but there was no room and he ended up sitting on the skirting board! He was a bit confused!

Josey, ds has had cm from about 7 months in cooking etc, and since 10 months as a drink. I'm still breastfeeding but he tops up with that after, don't want to start formula now. He loves it. He has about 4-6oz mid morning and about 6 oz after bf, before bed. (Bf first and last thing). They aren't supposed to have it as a main drink before 1 but I couldn't get more bm in to ds if I tried so I'm happy to give him it. We cut the 2 daytime feeds as he was just faffing.

Breastfeeders- are you giving the vitamin supplements that we're advised to give? I don't understand it, how can breast milk not be enough for your baby? Babies managed on it hundreds of years ago, so surely with a good diet it's quite adequate? I have heard of overdosing on vitamins. I know formula is fortified, but why do they say breast is best when it's actually not? But it is!

Hope all the holiday makers are having a lovely time, and those of you still at home. Our weather is not good but we do manage to get out for a walk every day. Tigerlion I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself, 6m pg and an 11m old, couldn't imagine, you'll be needing it. I have a friend whose lo (17m) manages to flip himself out of his cot. Obviously he's a lot bigger and stronger than our los but yes it is possible. She had to peep on him one night to see how he was doing it, and now has to lay duvets around the cot!

Ds got his first party bag this week, the party was while he was ill so we didn't go but I was slightly bemused- in it was just a packet of mini jammie dodgers - I don't mean just in that I think they're being mean, quite the contrary- because with it came an ELC bath time book, too big to fit in the party bag! Is this what we're supposed to do? We're just having family for this year but oh heavens from what some have said this party bag business is quite something!

I handed in my resignation to work on Tuesday! I am definitely not going back. And very happy about it, my boss tries each time I see her to persuade me to come back! For the other SAHMs- did you claim contributions based jobseekers allowance when you left work? I'm going to apply. Dh got it last year when he left work (6m driving ban therefore lost his job) though was working again within a week but from this I learned that it is available to us all, regardless of why you left work. It's something like £55 pw for 6months. We should all get it if we're entitled to it. We finalised our child tax credit award thingy, and found that we had been underpaid by £1,100 last year! And as I'm no longer earning our weekly payments go from something like £20 to £60. I'm quite chuffed.

josey · 12/07/2006 22:13

Tigerlion dd has a dummy and ds also had one which he got rid off himself at 16months as he burst his fav 1 and i tried to give him another which he just refused so im hoping dd will grow out of hers also

very proud of dd she has 2 new words dog and look though they are said ogy and ook which she says pointing a fist hasnt worked out how to get her finger out yet bless

bramblina · 12/07/2006 22:37

Oh ds loves to point, it's really funny,he points at everything, nothing sometimes, and finds the smallest bit of anything on the carpet and likes to push it with his stubby little finger. Unfortunately he also likes to point right up my nose when I'm feeding him!

suzi2 · 13/07/2006 20:09

My DS loves pointing too - mainly at lights and light switches. Still no sign of any words. He babbles loads but doesn't even do mummy & daddy to the right people yet! He has said "boof" a few times, not sure if it's a word and have no idea what it means because it's been in a different context every time. more than likely it's just a new sound.

Bramblina - he'll pick up speed fast! My DS was slow for about 2 or 3 days and now hes like grease lightening!

I'm also wondering about the dummy thing. But since DS is getting me up 5 times a night and my morning sickness is awful, it's the last thing I want to interefere with as it's all I have to calm him (other than my boobs!)

suzi2 · 13/07/2006 20:33

Vitamin supplements when breastfeeding???? Erm, never heard of any and not using any. Not sure if that's right though!

kate100 · 15/07/2006 14:02

Hi all, we had a lovely holiday, the sun shone, the boys were happy and we were altogether - bliss!

Ds2 loved the beach and spent of the time on the beach crawling around and digging in the sand. He wasn't that interested in eating it which was a relief as his big brother at the same age was unstoppable. Poor ds1 got knocked over by a big wave in the sea - fully dressed and was totally soaked, then he fell overin the sand! He couldn't have had more glue on him if I'd dipped him in glue and then rolled him in it and I HATE sand, it really sets my teeth on edge. When I was ds2's age I wore my tights on the beach if you can imagine that!! We had a great time 'though and now I need to get started on the boys birthdays. DS2 is 1 2 weeks today, I can't believe it's come around so fast. I was so miserable this time last year and couldn't wait for him to be born and now I want time to slow down. I had a reminder of my SPD on holiday too, I went to swing ds1 round and as I lifted him up I felt the bones grind and it was really painful and a shock as I hadn't felt it in so long, it still clickes but doesn't hurt, but this time mit did, ouch!

Hope you and all your about to turn one little ones are well and happy.

PanicPants · 16/07/2006 21:04

Kate - you sound like you had a lovely time, but I bet your glad my ds isn't yours as he spent the entire time shoving sand into his mouth and eating it. ALL DAY. Even after several days of visiting the beach he still sat and ate sand!

We had a lovely time, and ds really enjoyed himself.

Am very Jealous of you resigning Bramblina, I'm back to work next week an I'm not looking forward to it at all

But on a more happy note, as we left the beach last night to come home we stood looking back at it and dp asked me to marry him!! So today we've been shopping for rings!

bramblina · 16/07/2006 21:56

Oooooh PP you've given me goosebumps! Congratulations to you both, what fantastic news, and with the first birthday on it's way, oh how lovely.

The crawling is coming on but fortunately he's not too fast, just very careful. However he gets where he wants, and at the moment the favourite trick is to pull himself up on the plug in air freshener! All things similar will have to go.
Suzi, oh the morning sickness, I'm feeling for you honey. And 5 times through the night too, is he just a hungry little one? Are you going to continue the bf for both of them once the new one arrives? Always wondered what would happen there. Hope the sickness goes soon. How many weeks now?
I started another thread about the vits&bfing, general consensus is they'r enot necessary if child has helthy lifestyle and diet. Well that's what I've told myself anyway!
Ds has had some awful nappies for the last 2 days, and has woken around 10pm crying, I'm wondering if the pre-molars are on their way. He has all 8 front ones. (Either that or it's the 4 s&s chicken balls dh fed him in Jimmy Chung's at the weekend-but he reeeally loved them)!
Ds now almost always insists on helping with the spoon feeding himself- hmmm it's tad messy but I don't want to not let him incase I put him off forever! Unfortunately though for the last few days he has also taken to removing bits of food from his mouth to inspect or play with....! I just tell him no firmly and today it did seem to have more of an effect, I'm now wondering is he bored of small items (mince, fine chopped veg etc) as he likes to have a lump of something to chew on (eg Jimmy Chung's s&s chicken balls !) I guess it's just a normal developmental stage...

A question for all the bottle feeders- how much milk does you lo drink? Ds has a breastfeed in the morning, then breakfast. 6oz about 11am, lunch, then a bf followed by normally 7 oz before bed- tonight he had 7oz, then another 3, then another 2! Just wondered, but I guess if he wants it then there's no harm..?!
Kate, sorry you're still suffering with spd. I'm still seeing the physio about my sacro illiac. I think it's improving but now the good side has started to suffer as I've altered the way I walk to relieve the pain, and both sides are bad now. Surely not much longer!
We bought Ds a Fisher Price Little People Garage for his birthday! It's really cute, and the whole range is aimed at 1-5 yrs so hopefully it will be worthhile. It's a big range too so cabe added to. Had finally decided to buy him a ride on toy of some sort. Made the mistake of telling MIL....she bought him one last week.

Should we have a new thread for their birthday month? "And then they were 1"!?

PanicPants · 16/07/2006 22:37

A new thread sounds like a good idea.

I'm bottlefeeding and I give ds 7fl.oz in the morning with his breakfast, 7 at about three o'clock and then an 8 oz bottle at bedtime. Sometimes he finishes them, sometimes leaves an oz or two. We give him water when he's thirsty during the day and with meals.

But in the heat I have been adding an extra oz of water to his bottles to make sure he gets enough fluids. hth

kipper22 · 17/07/2006 10:53

oh, that's lovely! congratulations panicpants! you need to share every detail of the preparations with us! good luck back at school today.

i agree that a new thread is a good idea - i vote bramblina starts it with a run down of the birth dates as she posted on this page. i've just been trying to do it but can't find all the new dates and am confused by name changes since the pre-natal thread!

on the bottle front, bramblina, ds has 6oz at about 10.30 (now - hence why no caitals!) 4oz of cows milk (naughty, i know!) with a snack at about 3pm then 6 oz before bed. as pp said, i've been making the formula up with 7oz of water.

we've had a lovely, sunny weekend. went to the town show where my mum lives and ds had his picture taken for the local paper's baby competition. looks like it will be a gorgeous photo. i don't think for one minute he'll win (i don't know enough locals to swing the vote for him!) but at least my mum and nan will be able to show him off to all their friends!

ds was playing in the sand yesterday and kept rubbing his eye. i've rinsed it loads but today it's all red and swollen - any ideas of how i can clean it?

kate100 · 17/07/2006 16:08

Congratulations PanicPants Your proposal sounds a lot more romantic than mine, Dh propsed to me in a filed full of cows, in the midlle of the night and it was pouring with rain and it was November, chilly. I still said yes though, you'll have to tell us everything you're planning.

Ds2 is teething, he cut a bottom incisor, just before we went on holiday and now he's tired all the time, his skin is breaking out and he is producing the most hideous nappies. I'm sure there's a tooth on the way.

We bought the ds's birthday presents yesterday, ds1 is having abike and ds2 has got a car with a parent handle so I can push him round the park while ds1 larns to ride his bike. you can also take the floor out so when he learns to wlk he can push himself along.

Also ds2 has learned to kiss!! If you say 'Can I have a kiss Ben?' he'll plant a big wet smacker on you!! Next step is to teach him to do it with his mouth closed

I agree about a new thread for their birthdays, it's less than 2 weeks to go until ds2's. I can't believe how quickly it's going

Nat777 · 17/07/2006 19:40

Hi, wonder if you can help please. I have bought Missy a beaker today to use for her juice but also to use when she goes on to cow's milk.

My question is, are you guys going to stop using cooled boiled water for LO's juice when you go onto cows milk? Or will you continue boiling it?

Any advice would be appreciated, thx.

PanicPants · 17/07/2006 20:27

It wasn't as romantic as it sounds though, we were in the car ready to go (although overlooking a nearly deserted beach with the sun shining) when he says to me, maybe we should go shopping for a ring. And I had to say what do you mean etc. He still couldn't say the 'm' word though hence the long way away date of summer 2008!

Kipper yours sounds very memorable though something to tell the grandchildren!

But thankfully I didn't start work today but unfortunately it's next week

Kate we get the open mouthed kisses too, usually with a snotty nose thrown into the bargin

As for the cows milk/boiled water I'm not sure. Ds won't be 1 until the end of August so should I start to slowly introduce cows milk now? He does have it on his cereal already but not as a main drink. I'm still boiling water Nat777 so I'm not much help, maybe the others can tell you.

thought i'd stick the list in this thread so we can make any necessary changes before opening the new thread with it.....

i've changed my name on it.....so if anyone else needs adjustments then go ahead.

we went away to a small festival at the weekend....apart from being far too hot for camping, and myself not being able to 'rough it' as much as i used to it was a great time.
ds was in heaven the first time we put him in the tent, and he loved the music.......

suzi2 · 17/07/2006 22:27

Potential bad parent alert... I haven't been boiling water for DS to drink. He only started getting drinking water at 6 months and gets it straight out of the tap. It didn't cross my mind to boil it first!
