Tigerlion- thanks for that, I will buy some this weekend. For some reason I just thought that Missy was to young for pullup's, how silly! Have a great holiday! You have number two due in October? WOW!!

PanicPants · 28/06/2006 20:40

TigarLion how scary for you. That trick of syringing water has saved us a few times, especailly when ds overheated. Hope he's much better now but try cold melon - it rehydrates as well as soothes poorly throats.

at all of you lot travelling here and there. We're off to cornwall next week again, but I so wish we were off to foreign climates too. We've been looking for holidays for the october half term. Somewhere not very far away, warm but not hot, and child friendly. Any ideas?

josey · 28/06/2006 21:03

Hi all and welcome Nat

Sorry to hear about your nanny kate

been trying to catch up there are so many posts will have to read them later.

we are going to Euro Disney in october for a few days more for DS benefit - for those worried about long flights i believe there is something similar to calphol you can get at the chemist which helps los sleep - my neighbour was given it for her lo when they went to america, though your probably not keen on trying it, its good to know its out there!!

dd still isnt crawling though is getting from place to place and i cant work out how she is doing it i think she is sliding on her bum she has also found the side of the sofa and is interested but not enough to do anything but hit it haha

going to go before i start on with loads of ramblings again haha

suzi2 · 28/06/2006 21:06

lol Josey - my DS used to get across the room in a way we never really saw... he seemed to lie on his tummy and then sit back up in a different position. but one day I left him for 20seconds and he was right accross the room - it was that evening we discovered he could crawl! So watch her like a hawk!

PanicPants · 28/06/2006 21:19

lol suzi and josey. Once they crawl, thats it! Your life is not your own.

Ds is just beginning to cruise (we're talking pigeon steps and and 5 cm along the sofa lol)but has mastered how to get himself back down from standing now so at least those cries have stopped.

I'm sure ds is manipulating us. He understands no, and moreoften than not he stops touching (say the tv) when we say no. We then say 'well done' and smile etc etc, when he complies. But recently he does it again, we say no, he stops turns back round and grins and claps when we are saying well done. So I think he goes to do something wrong, so we can say no, so he can stop and get rewarded for it iuswim!

josey · 28/06/2006 21:25

hehehe i know she has been under the nest of tables and legs under the sofa but she hates being on her tummy so if you put her on her tummy she just pulls her legs into the splits and sits back up im sure she is spinning - ds was already walking round the furniture and droping to his knees to get to the next bit i prefer her sitting nice no sticky fingers on the glass doors
ps dd will only be 10months on friday it seems so far away compaired to you all for her birthday

Nat777 · 30/06/2006 12:12

Can you believe that our LO's are almost 1 year old! Only a little over 5 weeks and Missy will be one, that is crazy! I know people said it would fly by but I had no idea it would go this quick!

kate100 · 30/06/2006 21:39

I'm off on my holidays tomorrow, but thought I'd check in before I went

My little chap's latest trick is.......... climbing all the way to the top of the stairs I went upstais today and was about to come back down and there was my little fella smiling away at me and looking very proud of himself! I had no idea he could get up one stair let alone all of them, mischievous little monkey

He's getting better at standing and I think he's getting ready to let go, I hope he walks soon, he weighs a ton and it makes my back ache!! I love it when babies have just learned to walk and they totter around, it looks so cute

PanicPants · 30/06/2006 21:45

Have a lovely time Kate - you lucky thing you. I'd have died with shock if ds had climbed the stairs. But he too would be grinning at me.

Ds is poorly again with yet another cold. He's already had 2 lots of antibiotics and now the dr has given him an inhaler too. Poor little man.

He was just really sick when we put him to bed, dp was giving him the last of his bottle led in his cot when ds was sick and said it was like a fountain of milk

Miaou · 30/06/2006 21:51

kate, at your ds going up the stairs!! Have a lovely holiday, and thanks for your thoughtful post on my other thread

They really are coming on, our lot aren't they? Ds can now crawl quite a long way so we have baby-proofed the living room and put a gate across the archway to the kitchen (open plan) so we don't have to keep saying "no, ds" (which, like panicpants's LO, he understands perfectly but chooses to ignore!). He keeps trying to pull himself up to standing but hasn't quite got there yet.

I'm now starting to prepare ds for giving up b/f-ing at 1 year as I'm desperate to have another one - so today we gave ds some cow's milk in a cup to try - and he loved it - phew! We are now replacing one feed (the smallest one) with cow's milk and will drop the other two next month. I have mixed feelings about it really - if we weren't ttc I would be happy to let him carry on - but comfort myself with the thought that he is less and less bothered about it.

Miaou · 30/06/2006 21:52

x-posts panic pants - your poor ds! Hope he gets better soon.

PanicPants · 30/06/2006 21:58

Thankyou miaou - I'm sure he will. Isn't it worrying when they're poorly?

Yes they quickly learn the word no - little monkeys - then choose to ignore it.

Ds has learnt a new trick, I had him in the bathroom while I showered today for the steam (for his chest)and he pulled himself upto the bath, worked his way around to the shower curtain and then yanked it back so he got drenched - and stood there looking at me blinking!

kate100 · 30/06/2006 22:05

Panicpants, how funny, I bet he got a shock!!

Miaou, I've posted on your other thread. DS2 understand 'no' and can even shake his head, still ignores me though

suzi2 · 01/07/2006 21:40

aw PP-hope your DS is feeling better soon. We bought a humidifier for DSs chest but getting soaked in the shower sounds like way more fun!

Kate, welldone on the stair climber. We have a climber here too -he's always trying to get his feet onto something higher. He can do stairs but has short legs so ours are too deep. He also tends to stand up inbetween steps and let go so I have to be right behind!

Miaou, hoping for you that just by dropping a feed or two your fertility returns and you won't have to quit completely. Glad to hear your LO likes cows milk -my DS is the same and feeding is getting quite sore so I might switch a couple of feeds.

PanicPants · 02/07/2006 20:33

Suzi2 - do you find the humidifier effective? I wonder if it's worth getting one for ds as he often gets a bad chest BUT since I've been giving him the inhaler (which he takes brillantly) it has eased it a bit, so I think it's an allergy based wheeze rather than a cold...maybe?

bramblina · 02/07/2006 21:19

Hi all,
We're joining you in the illness club, ds developed a raging temp on Thursday, we'd met my Mum for lunch and he wouldn't eat much. Popped up to Boots (btw They have started a new club where you can have a quick consultation with a pharmacist and they can prescribe minor drugs like calpol etc which then of course is free, you need to register the lo for it) and bought some paracetamol. That night he brought up all his dinner, then slept on till 10.30am. The next day all he ate was a weetabix and slept most of the day. He was so floppy at 6pm and was hardly responding I phoned NHS24. They asked me to take him to hospital (Ross Memorial in Dingwall, just a small nursing hospital so no drama with A&E thankfully) where he was checked over. Once the doctor stuck the wooden stick down ds's throat and he got all upset he threw up all over dh and got himself in a right little state. He slept well again but the next day had a temp of 103 and fell asleep every time I lay him down, even just to change his nappy. Only ate a weetabix again and a little fish for dinner. Today his appetite has been better, but he didn't wake till 10am, and has had 3 naps totalling nearly 5 hours! It's just so sad for him not to be his happy little self, the house almost felt empty today. Dh was worried sick as he had to go to Spain and hates leaving him at the best of times. He cut his 8th tooth today too so I don't suppose that has helped.

I found the Huggies convertibles reduced in Boots- but only down to £4/small pk and £5/lge pack. Got some anyway, but ds is in the normal 4+ size, and I find the convertibles size 4 a lot bigger. Softer elastic though so that's quite good. Someone said use them on the plane for a quick change so I'll save them for then. Trying to gather a load of new small toys for the flight- I need 11 hours worht of entertainment so if you have any good suggestions for what your los like in miniature, send them this way! Ds has a "Shimmery Dinky" book he was given, found some more in Borders, just £2.99 but a good little set of books. ELC in Inverness have got a lot reduced just now, stacking rings, bath toys, mostly half price, it's end of season so maybe other ELC's are doing it too. While I'm on the subject has everyone heard of Hawkin's Bazaar ? It's a great place to find different things, and come Christmas they do shed loads of things for 50p etc, great stocking fillers for the older ones.

I asked previoulsy about everyone's plans for the birthdays- but what about the presents? We can't decide whethter to go for a ride on toy, a garage/train set that can be added to for years, outdoor toys etc, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

suzi2 · 02/07/2006 22:21

Sorry your DS isn't well Bramblina. as for pressies, my DH says that DS has too many toys and we souldn't bother but I'm going to get him either a ride on trike that goes from 9 months + or a playtent/tunnel from IKEA. He'll be getting his next stage car seat too - although how DS thinks we can pass that off as a birthday present I'll never know!

queenrollo · 03/07/2006 08:06

so far i've bought ds a box of stickle bricks for his birthday, we'll be getting him a trike of some sorts but not sure what else. MIL is getting him a baby trampoline from Mothercare and my mum has bought him a book and i've asked her for paints/crayons to start building up an arts/crafts box for him.
i am quite amazed that we've got almost to his first birthday and still only have one storage box worth of toys!! we were determined not to buy him loads, because i've seen with friends kids they don't play with half of it! besides ds is happy with the following......the cat to chase and the broom to 'sweep up' with. he really likes books too.
sorry to hear your lo is poorly Bramblina.
it's so hot here again and our house is always interminably warm anyway, there is NO BREEZE and keeping ds room cool is impossible. i didn't sleep very well last night because i was worried about him overheating. then to top it off just about everything in the fridge has gone off because my fridge can't cope with the heat and is not working properly.

kipper22 · 03/07/2006 12:52

hope all poorly lo's are feeling a bit better today!

panicpants & kate (when you get back you lucky thing!) - ds has managed both of those tricks! i left him playing in the front room while i loaded the dishwasher. the next thing i knew i could hear banging in my bedroom! he'd had to pass the kitchen door to reach the stairs and had then crawled up like lighning! certainly gave me a scare and made sure we got a downstairs stair gate! he also loves to watch me in the shower - holding onto the bath and tottering up and down along the inside of the curtain until he and the floor are soaking!

so far we are just planning to buy ds some sticklebricks or duplo - waiting to see what he doesn't get from relatives!

Azure · 03/07/2006 16:26

Hi everyone - hope the poorly ones get better soon. It's so hot, isn't it? When DS2 went to bed last night (in just his nappy) the temperature in his room was 29 degrees - awful. I met up with some mum friends this morning with babies the same age. I hadn't seen them for a couple of months and was stunned at how big the babies were (as were they with mine). DS2 is crawling and pulling himself up all the time. He has managed a couple of steps, but thankfully not the whole flight of stairs yet. I think we'll get him a ride-on for his birthday. When DS1 was the same age we lived in a flat with no garden, so it's nice to get some toys which need more space. Oh, and a little slide - he absolutely loves them and we've only got a huge one in the garden. It was DS1's 5th birthday party yesterday, which went very well (though so hot). DS1's actual birthday isn't until August (after DS2) but we wanted to have it before he breaks up from school. We'll probably just have a small family get-together for DS2.

Hi All hope the poorly los are feeling better, dd still has a runny nose and is a bit grumpy but not ill.
still not crawling which i was quite glad about till i got my hair cut last week and there was a teacher in and my hairdressers lo is 5days younger than dd anyway this teacher said to both of us get a tunnel cause there is new research to state that non crawlers have no co-ordination skills and have problems reading and drawing - i didnt crawl and i can do both perfectly where as DS did crawl and struggles with both!!!
Planning either a ride on or a swing for the garden for dds birthday.
Brambalina what about some finger puppets that you could tell stories with?

Miaou · 04/07/2006 19:33

Hello folks, hope you are all doing well

Ds has added another word, byebye, which he whispers when we put him to bed - soooo sweet! He is also making an attempt at dd1's name so I think he is going to be talking at the same rate the dd's were (nineteen to the dozen, that is ). He is still trying to pull himself up, and currently is balancing on his hands and feet then trying to stand up straight, but he keeps falling back on his bum.

Can't believe he is nearly one!! Nothing planned for his birthday but might do a joint party with a couple of friends at the beginning of September whose little ones are also turning one.

suzi2 · 05/07/2006 22:20

Aw miaou - that's so cute that I actually cried when I read it. My DS isn't quite so cute going to sleep. So ladies, I need your help...

DS is usually fairly good about going down to sleep at night. he goe to bed around 7pm, sometimes with a bit of a fight but nothing more than 20 mins.

But the last week or so, he's been shattered and going to bed at 7 as normal, but refusing to go to sleep. He climbs, crawls and crys and if we try and lay him down he throws an all out tantrum and screams. Loads of tears! Consequently, he's been finally falling asleep about 7:30 or 8.

And he's also started waking at 5:45am again. Although he's grouchy and not ready to get up, he's too awake to go back to sleep.

Any ideas? DH was wondering that as he gets older, he might need a later bedtime? He has between 2 & 3 hours of naps (at most) during the day.

Miaou · 06/07/2006 07:14

suzi, they don't have to do much to turn us into emotional wrecks, do they?

Re the early starts - if it's any comfort, ds is now waking around 5.45am, will play until about 6 when he shouts for his milk (b/f in bed with me) ... then we have to get up! He is currently sitting across the other side of the room from me picking up bits from under the table (the dds were making collages yesterday and there are lots of magazine snippings under there which he likes to pick up pincer-style!). He goes back to bed at 8am-ish for another 2-2.5 hours.

The dds both did this at various times - personally I would say just go with it, it's a phase he will grow out of . Ds has really started crawling with avengence, and from going to bed at 8-8.30pm we have had to move it forward to 7pm because he is so exhausted! Hence the early start in the morning. As he gets used to it he will probably revert to going to bed later and/or sleeping longer.

Re. the crying before going to bed - ds will sometimes do this, generally because he has sat himself up or got himself caught up in the bars of the cot! We mostly leave him to sort himself out unless he is totally stuck (having him in a grobag really helps as it limits his movements without frustrating him) - if we need to go up we just pick him up, speak to him calmly and put him back down at the bottom of the cot, but don't wait for him to calm down (mean parents! but he then settles pretty quickly). HTH

queenrollo · 06/07/2006 08:09

suzi......my ds is doing exactly the same as yours! got his daddy up at 5am yesterday!

it would appear ds has developed a sudden intolerance to cows milk ....this latest bout of teething turned his grown up poo into breatsfed style mush again. it hasn't settled down at all so yesterday i gave him formula instead of cows milk to drink at lunch, and made his porridge with formula instead. this morning we have a return to normal solid poo.
i'm a bit upset now at the thought of a lactose intolerant baby......what the hell am i supposed to give him?
