Sitting here in tears. Sister is having a little party this aft so thought I'd put L into a Christmas outfit a friend sent (0-3m) and it's falling off him. It's brought home how small he is. I must be doing something wrong. No gold top milk here. Feel so bloody useless. Sorry.

ChunkyTurkeywiththetrimmings · 23/12/2012 14:09

You're not useless blonder and its the HP that have made you feel this way. If nobody had told you that his weight gain was 'wrong' you would have just accepted he was petite. The charts show a range of sizes - there always has to be someone at the top & someone at the bottom & lots in between.
And for its worth - DS is a Chunky monkey & only just growing out of 1st size & it took ages for my DD to need 0-3 size clothes, just because she started at 6lb5 & didn't hit 9lb+ until 10wks.

NervousReindeer · 23/12/2012 14:39

blonder don't let it upset you, my LO is 9w and not in 0-3 yet, they all grow at different paces and she'll get there eventually

NervousReindeer · 23/12/2012 14:40

I ment he'll get there Xmas Blush was thinking if my DD

NervousReindeer · 23/12/2012 14:40

I had to take her Xmas dress back because it was 0-3 and way to big

kirrinIsland · 23/12/2012 14:42

blonder it's the HVs making you feel like this because they are looking at average figures, not your baby personally. Both he and you are doing fine. fWIW DD is 10lbs and her newborn stuff still fits and 0-3 stuff looks big on her - a lot depends on where it's from.

KissysUnderTheMisteltoe · 23/12/2012 15:06

Blonder you're not useless at all. Like others have said your LO is just petite, and its weight obsessed HVs making you feel this way. as my mum used to say to me when I was younger "good things come in small packages" Smile

KissysUnderTheMisteltoe · 23/12/2012 15:07

I was 5lb 4 at birth and a tiny baby for a good while, I turned out alright Smile

kirrinIsland · 23/12/2012 15:15

I was 4lb11 at birth and I'm ok too if a little flabby round the middle

ValiumQueen · 23/12/2012 15:19

blonder you are doing a fantastic job honey. I am so very proud of you x

ValiumQueen · 23/12/2012 15:41

Disasterous shopping trip for us. Sainsburys. Tried DS in the lean back seat on the trolley as have DD2 also. Scream scream scream. DH doing shop with DD2 and me and DD1 in cafe with no money for a coffee or anything, or indeed hands to carry it. DS fed and still not happy. Worth coming out then. Grr

november12mum · 23/12/2012 15:42

Hello everyone,
I need some opinions from more experienced mums,my DS has not eaten since 11 this morning,is it normal for them to go so long without milk,am I overreacting by panicking? He had like 3 min at the breast now but he does not seem very hungry or interested in the breast.thanks in advance for any replies

KissysUnderTheMisteltoe · 23/12/2012 15:48

How many weeks is your LO november? Did he have quite a lot of feeds this morning? Maybe he filled himself up on those? My LO is 5 weeks and has gone up to 5 hours between a feed at night before. I bet your DS will wake up hungry soon.

Catbag · 23/12/2012 15:49

blonder I would first direct you tomwhat I saod to pass this morning, and then further to fb to observe what my 3lb 11oz tiddley daughter looks like, ten years on. She could only wear dolls clothes to start with and didn't get into newborn size clothes until she was four and half months. Don't let these health visitors and whatnot knock your confidence. Seriously, go back a couple of pages and read what I put, because it appplies to you too

Catbag · 23/12/2012 15:52

'scuze the typos - I'm leaning over two feeding babies' head tp type this on the tablet :o

november12mum · 23/12/2012 15:52

He will be 6 weeks tomorrow,he is awake and seems fine just not interested in the breast at all.not sure what to make of it.

DonnaDoon · 23/12/2012 15:53

blonder blonder blonder blonder My dd is older than yours and still in first size too she was only 9lb 2oz when weighed last week its nothing to worry about I promise they get bigger in the end (unmumsnetty hugs)

blonderthanred · 23/12/2012 16:26

Oh I just posted & lost the post.

Thank you so much. Sorry for the wobble, just suddenly felt really awful. This week he has been so brilliant, smiling, alert, sleeping better and grasping his toys, I had almost forgotten he was 'failing to thrive'...

You have all been so lovely and I feel a bit more rational now. He is wearing a nice stripey newborn babygro my sister bought him so she is pleased and he's being passed round admiring grandparents.

ValiumQueen · 23/12/2012 16:34

november he will eat when hungry. He sounds fine and is getting quite a big boy.

blonder if your milk was rubbish he would not be like you describe.

StuntNun · 23/12/2012 17:09

Blonder my boys both wear clothes a year younger than their age at 9 and 6 but they're still in the normal range on the growth charts. Look at how healthy he is and whether he meets developmental milestones, not on whether he meets the HV's criteria.

OP posts:
ChunkyTurkeywiththetrimmings · 23/12/2012 17:34

I think, when my DD was always a couple of months behind clothes sizes, I looked at the Mothercare sizes (which, imo, are v generously sized) and found that a child would have to be above the 50th centile on all measurements to fit into their sizes at the appropriate ages. Which means about 75% of the baby population must be in each size "late" because half of all boys and most girls wouldn't be that size. My friends nearly 2yo son is still in 9-12mth trousers. I figure labels don't count in the same way a size 14 label in my clothes is invisible. :)

Sounds like "fun" VQ

Novembermum our boys are exactly the same age. I'm sure he's fine - my worry would be that he'll want to feed every 2hrs at night Xmas Wink

PetiteRaleuse · 23/12/2012 17:35

November he'll be going ibto growth spurt mode or coming out of it so sleeping more. He may well soon be snacking little and often.

Blonder,I was born small and stayed well underweight for my height until I was 29. Then years of being able to eat what I wanted and not put on a lb caught up with me. Weight doesn't matter as long as we are healthy. That remains true right through life.

And your LO is happy and a visibly happy baby is healthy. Grasping toys is a key milestone at his age so that box can be ticked.

november12mum · 23/12/2012 19:36

Yes Petite,he does sleep more lately,so it could be a growth spurt.well,at least he had a good 25 min on the breast now so I feel much better.i guess he will be waking more often at night to feed but at least I finally have my DP at home helping, so I'm trying to be positive.
I hope you all get some rest tonight.

horseylady · 23/12/2012 19:42

Blonder hugs. He would not be bright and alert if he was not getting enough. Ds was 11lb Wednesday and the mother care 0-3 baby grows are huge on him!!! His vests are slightly big still. I wouldn't worry too much as everyone says. As with clothes sizes for us there is huge variation. I can be anything from an 8 to a 12 lol!!! Obviously I don't change so shops vary wildly!!

I need to finish wrapping presents. Dh has gone training. Ds will not be put down. I also really need to Hoover and do the washing. The sling is in the car. I do not think I'll be moving far.....

Evilwater · 23/12/2012 20:22

Ok ladies that day is almost here, and for the ladies that have done this before,
How do you get the baby to sleep on Xmas night??
