YW I read that taking baby into the bathroom with a hot shower running is good for colds - the steam will help clear the airways a bit (although make sure it's not too hot to be scalding).

Happy Birthday and congrats petite.

Baby G has been the biggest Klingon ever today. Would not let me put her down and wanting to feed constantly. She must be exhausted as has only slept about 3 hrs tops. This newborn malarky seems to be getting harder as the days go on...or as the tiredness increases Wink.

PetiteRaleuse · 20/11/2012 20:07

Yellow, I now consider myself a bit of an expert on newborn colds, as this is how LO started... Keep an eye on her temperature of course, but at the hospital they gave us saline drops, basically just sea water. You turn them on their side and squirt it up a nostril qnd all the gunk comes out the other side, and vice versa. It clears the nostrils and protects them against further germs from coming in..

And as is basically sea water isn't anything medicalised. Paracetamol in case of anythign over 38, but we were told to take her to the dr or to ooh or casualty in that case anyway.

Belgrano · 20/11/2012 20:11

Well I'm in the waiting room of the children's hospital. Phoned out if hrs GP about v sleepy, not really feeding baby who has been doing funny sicks today and they told me in no uncertain terms to come straight here 'or call 999 if you can't go In immediately'. Well I managed not to cry and am now in an incredibly busy waiting rm trying to avoid the sick-smeared toddlers and whooping cough cases waiting for triage. God knows how long I'll be here but I suspect tonight will be the worst nights sleep yet. Wish me (and more importantly of course poor little DD) luck.

PetiteRaleuse · 20/11/2012 20:12

Good luck belgrano. Tat was us a couple of days ago..

kissyfur · 20/11/2012 20:14

Good luck belgrano

Belgrano · 20/11/2012 20:17

Petite I am glad you have all officially 'got better', you must be very relieved to be home.

Chunkychicken · 20/11/2012 20:19

Daisy not an expert, but your HV is wrong. Night feeds up your supply, not all babies sleep well at night (bf or ff) and supplementing with f will reduce supply & not necessarily improve sleep. Perhaps encouraging baby to know the difference between night & day with a bedtime routine etc would help increase sleep periods at night rather than lots of long day time naps.

Baby has been sleeping almost the whole day, bar feeds. That's ok isn't it??!! He's 9do. He had been awake a couple of hours yesterday & the day before so kind of expected the same again today...

Chunkychicken · 20/11/2012 20:23

Happy birthday & good news petite.

Best of luck belgrano.

I too was told olive oil for dry skin, but have used a touch of baby oil on DS too. Wouldn't buy baby oil, but had a tiny bottle from DD's baby toiletries gift set I had.

Chunkychicken · 20/11/2012 20:25

Anyone else got DRA?? I think I've strained my poor muscles slightly walking fast this afternoon Sad

DesperateHousewife21 · 20/11/2012 20:29

chunky dd is 11do today and still only really wakes up to feed. She's still slightly jaundiced though so that could be making a difference.

I'm off to bed as she's asleep and I'm v tired, will no doubt be back in a few hours anyway

Chunkychicken · 20/11/2012 20:45

Thanks DH & sleep well :)

daisychain76 · 20/11/2012 20:46

Thanks chunky. I am trying to distinguish day and night, but no real affect yet. l shall persevere.

Great news petit and thinking of you Belgrano.

if you are using olive oil of course any is fine but a brand like meridian or clear springs from a health food shop is particularly good cos has no preservatives in it (unlike supermarket ones).

kirrinIsland · 20/11/2012 20:50

Great news petit What a relief.

Hope everything is ok belgrano

All is well here. Just done my first painless feed - the razor blade sensation has gone!!!

MadamGazelleIsMyMum · 20/11/2012 20:54

Great news petit.

Having a shocker this evening. Visiting my family without DH as its 350 miles away and he is back at work now. Attempted bedtime on own. Oh dear. DD screamed for DH for a solid hour. She is now passed out in my bed and not the toddler bed. DS has slept in the car all day and fed v little so is bound to feed all night. My DM wants to help but DD basically wants to co sleep and I'm only happy for her to do that with DH or I, and only when nothing else will work. Am hoping this is all to do with the journey, unfamiliar surroundings etc, otherwise this is going to be a miserable trip.

applepieinthesky · 20/11/2012 20:55

I was also told not to use anything for dry skin unless it is becoming sore then buy some olive oil from a health food shop. Poor DS is flaky all over but luckily it doesn't appear to be irritating him.

I made an appointment today to go and register him on Thursday afternoon. DP had to come with me as we are not married yet. I can imagine we will still be debating middle names on the way there.

DS settles wonderfully in the day time but we haven't managed to transfer it to night time yet. Still, he's only 6 days old so need to keep on trying.

applepieinthesky · 20/11/2012 20:56

Good luck belgrano. I hope your little one is ok x

horseylady · 20/11/2012 21:08

Belgrano hope all ok. How worrying for you all.

For dry skin I was told to use baby oil!!! And I bath him Every day with johnsons baby bath!! Odd/worrying how the advise changes for babies born together!! My hv was also sensible wrt to weight gain. She said get him weighed every other week or weekly just to track what he was doing. She said he'll go up and down the centiles but will settle somewhere but regular weighing will help them see a pattern and see where he's likely to be. She emphasised that it doesn't matter where on the chart he is, he'll follow his own line, but the line should follow(ish) the growth chart. I really liked her. She was just sensible!! Like the community midwives, sensible!!

ValiumQueen · 20/11/2012 21:10

madame you are either very brave or totally mad driving all that way after a section and with such a small baby. I do hope you are ok.

Interested in colocynth (homeopathic). Anyone know anything about it?

applepieinthesky · 20/11/2012 21:14

I was told not to use any baby bath or products for at least the first month so have been using plain water. Yes it is odd how the advice varies, you would think there would be guidelines and they would all recommend the same thing Confused I'm sure a little bit of baby bath won't do any harm though.

horseylady · 20/11/2012 21:19

Not heard of it, quickly read about it now and it sounds ok. I'd speak to someone who knows a lot about homeopathic medicine. I can ask my friend if you want? She's very knowledgeable and helped get rid of the most horrific abscess in my puppy!! Not sure how good she is for humans though lol!!

horseylady · 20/11/2012 21:20

Apple - the hospital said bath with baby bath in the hospital!!

ValiumQueen · 20/11/2012 21:26

If you could horsey I would be most grateful.

DS had baby bath in hospital. I use johnsons head to toe for all of us.

NervousAt20 · 20/11/2012 21:53

Hope everything is okay balgrano and you get seen quickly

Just feeding LO and hoping she'll settle back down quick so we can go to bed. DO gone out so she needs to come to bed with me. I thought my hormones / emotional side had settled down but done things still start me off lol

Hope everyone gets good nights sleep

Belgrano · 20/11/2012 21:58

Been given a sort of all-clear...they muttered about bronchiolitis and blood tests and liver failure-Sad but then decided DD not bad enough to warrant all the pricking and testing. So off home to 'watch her all night'. No sleep for me then! I'll be up watching and timing her breaths all blimmin night...sore boobs due to lack of feeding all day...night all.

GTbaby · 20/11/2012 22:10

I was advised to use olive oil. But not the health food one, never heard that. But will try pick some up.
I am using plain water to bath. Or cotton buds with top n tail bowel. But am not bathing everyday Blush.
I had fully intended to not use baby wipes. But laziness got the better of me.

Won the controlled crying battle at 7.45. Well it was unintentional, I was in kitchen didn't hear, by time mil told me he was crying I ran up, n as I got to door he stopped. I stayed by the door until he totally settled. Guess I should try it more during day as well.
DH is with him feeding now Confused I can hear him talking to LO. This is LO wide awake time. So really trying hard not to stimulate him during night feeding.

Just curious to bottle feeders, how do u know when u move up in teat flow size?
