Hiya all.

Sorry I haven't read all the thread yet. We are just back from a week in Holland where we were visiting DH's Grandfather.

Johnny was really good considering the long journey although the cabin on the boat on the way over was absolutely boiling and even just wearing his nappy, he was far too hot. He didn't sleep all night and only managed to catch a bit of shut eye when I took him out of the cabin at 5.30am. Boy, were we tired!!

So, he is six months old today and I have achieved my goal of 6 months exclusive breastfeeding Grin This afternoon, DH and I sat at the table with Johnny eating cooked carrot and turnip sticks. Johnny knew exactly what to do and he picked up the sticks and they went straight into his mouth and got chewed on. I don't think he swallowed a whole lot of it, and I'll get an indication when I see what's in his nappy tomorrow, but he'll cotton on pretty quickly I'm sure! I am truly amazed that he could do it first time and he certainly looked like he was enjoying it.

But I am a soppy Mummy. I shed a little tear at my baby growing up and feeding himself. Goodness I need to get a grip of myself Shock

I'll read the rest of the thread to find out what you have all been up to and I hope you are all doing well

Wow, your lo's are eating loads. I feel like I'm starving ds. Only just started weaning him and had to cut down on the amount as he was getting really grumpy mid afternoon like he had really bad indigestion. It's a shame though cos he loves the food.

nervousmum · 22/04/2006 10:53

Piggiesmum - when we first started weaning, Joey only had a tiny bit too, 1-2 cubes at most. It's only in the last few weeks we've stepped up a gear, and only then because he was actively searching for more food each mealtime.

And snap SusiS - Joey weighs exactly 9.3kg tooSmile. We were having a debate earlier re supermarket trolleys. I'm not happy for Joey to sit in the ordinary kiddies trolley yet, as he's still not entirely co-ordinated with his head and body movements, and he often falls asleep half way round the shopping, yet the Tescos baby trolleys (the ones that look like they've got blue car seats attached) say maximum weight limit 9kg! So far, i've ignored it, but what do the rest of you do?

jai38 · 22/04/2006 11:22

Hi all , long time no type

we are all well have passed the six months mark!

Mawbroon we are doing BLW as much as poss as well, we waited till six months altough mainly bottle feeding.

Ds co or dination has come on in leaps and bounds and eat cheery toms like no bodies business. The only problem we have found is he gets frustrated as he is hungry and cannot get enough in so we are doing part finger food and part soft food but still with bits and he does insist on weetabix eating with fingers!!

But a quick question we are now in out third week of real food and not really sure what the routine should be - currently we have a morning bottle followed by breakfast an hour later then a bottle about 11.30 then lunch then mid afternoon bottle and then dinner then bed bottle. He is only taking about five ounces at each bottle usually but this all hit and miss sometimes he won't want the bottle or we miss it and he has banana

What routines are you all following?

Plus he is still having a dream feed and another in the early hours

Elf1981 · 22/04/2006 11:53

Is 9.2kg 20lbs?
Had Evie weighed the other day, she's now 16lbs. Shes 28 weeks now and is on the 40% line, was on the 91% line at birth.
She eats breakfast with the CM, then a yoghurt at lunch and other than that, milk. She will take about 10-12oz between half seven and five, with two feeds from me in the evening, one in the morning, so I dont know her milk intake in total.
She will eat lots of different foods when we try her with them, but she wont eat defrosted foods! Must get myself in gere and up the weaning process!

nervousmum · 22/04/2006 18:20

9.3kg is 20Ibs 8oz

morningpaper · 23/04/2006 13:29

Just checking in... I've had to turn down a hen night this week because dd is VERY difficult in the evenings still. Basically she will settle, but only with me, and I need to go into her quite a bit to settle her between 7-9pm. She has had a bit of a cough lately and because of that she is throwing up a lot of her milk which means A LOT OF WASHING!

Weaning going ok - just a few spoonfuls here and there, no routine yet.

Nursery is going great - two mornings a week, same nursery as her big sister, I practically have to control myself from skipping away shouting I'M FREE! I'M FREE! as I leave the nursery for work.

RedTartanLass · 23/04/2006 14:56

hi all,
been bit down in the dumps for a couple of weeks, but better now Grin

Amazing6 months ago, we had our wee newborns!!!Or were still waiting!!!

DD has discovered eating!!! OMG, from being completely not interested in eating to going OTT!! She has about 100g of porridge at breakfast, 125g of mushed vegetables and 100g of fruit at lunch and 125g of mushed dinner and morefruit in the evening!! Plus loads of milk.

Mind you a couple of weeks ago, I could still squeeze her into her newborn vests Blush and now she's popping out of her 3-6 months.

I really must get her weighed poor soul. She now has 6 teeth, can roll from front to back but not back to front!! She also can sit unsupported now. She's found her voice and boy does she screamn, is that a girl thing, my 2 boys didn't scream like her!!

i'll go and cathc up with the rest of the thread now!

mawbroon · 24/04/2006 10:19

Hi all. I've managed to catch up on everything now.

RTL - sorry to hear that you've been cheesed off. I hope you are more cheery now.

MP - hopefully the unsettled evenings will pass soon. Just think of the hangover that you saved by not going on the hen night Wink

jai - how's the BLW going? I am finding that I have to hold some of the slippery stuff like banana for Johnny as he can't get a good grip of it, but I understand that the key thing is that you must not put the food in the baby's mouth for them, so I just hold it and he slurps away. I can't believe that he ate almost a whole banana this morning. Bear in mind that we only started on Friday!! I am seeing some stuff in his nappy so there has definitely been something going in even though it doesn't appear that way! He managed really well with some cooked chicken and seemed to enjoy it, so I am going to try some other cooked meats for him to get to work on.

I'm getting Johnny weighed this afternoon. He was only 6.2kg three weeks ago, and I am not expecting him to have put on more than a couple of ounces. Mind you, with that whole banana inside him, he'll be quite heavy!! As long as he doesn't poo before we go Grin

We have had some lovely weather here the past few days and we have finally managed to get some seeds and things planted in the garden. Johnny was out with us in the backpack whilst I was doing the hoeing (is that a word?) and seemed to enjoy it. And the fresh air makes him sleep!! GrinGrin Bonus!

mummygow · 24/04/2006 15:27

Hi everyone sorry not been on for a while - rtl should have e-mailed you as I have had sh** few weeks - dh and I have seperated and couldn't be bothered talking about it, still cant but it's not too bad and hopefully we will get through it one way or another - he had kids from 4pm on friday until last night and I stayed with my mum and went out with my friends - my wee man looked so big this morning when I got him up!!

He eats loads

8oz milk in morming with a weetabix

I have also started giving him proein and carbs with veg and he is loving that with fruit at lunch.

At 2.30 he has between 3-6oz milk and 1 or 2 yogurts (yes he is a grubber).

He then has a dinner at 5pm with more yoghurt and not very much of a bottle at 6.30pm (that's why I have given him yogurt at dinner to make sure he is getting enough milk - hv says 1 yoghurt = 3oz milk)

He is sleeping soun dly from 7pm to 7am and still has a morning nap of 45 mins and sleeps for 2 hours after lunch - he's a lazy sod!!

Cant be bothered rolling or even attempting to get up on knees or anything can sit for a couple of seconds then topples but he gives great cuddles and smiles Grin

No teeth yet but not stopping the chewing process - he loves a wee rice cake after lunch and he is getting a better hang on the cup situation - I just give it after lunch and he is starting to pick it up - not really drinking from it but getting there.

Really enjoying the nice weather as going out for walks and playing outside now.

Anyway enough of Cameron and I now.

Glad everyone else seems to be getting on really well and will start keeping up again now that I can be bothered
(was kind of missing you guys actually) Grin

Elf1981 · 24/04/2006 18:47

MG - sorry to hear about you and your DP separating, when you want to rant or talk, you know where we all are. Hope that things start looking up soon.

MB - how did Johnny get on at the weigh in? We have increased Evie's food, she now has brekkie and lunch and next week / week after are going to introduce a dinner. She had strawberries again yesterday, in a BLW fashion where she ate them herself, she seemed to really enjoy it!

RTL - sorry you have been having a naff time. I was pretty peeved last week, esp when it came to payrises at work, hardly got anything, was penalised as even though I'd hit targets in time I'd been there, they justified no rise saying it was as I was on mat leave. Wouldnt mind if I'd taken the full year but I was only off 5 1/2 months!

MP - I'm off on a hen night Sat, no doubt I'll be on her Sunday saying how much Evie behaved / misbehaved for DH!

morningpaper · 24/04/2006 21:07

MG: Sorry to hear about your shite few weeks. Hope you are feeling more positive soon.

Elf: bugger about pay rise!

I can't give dd rice cakes etc. because her teeth are sharp and she chews bits off. Her teeth are SO sharp that when I try to put a finger in last week to check for more teeth she went right through the skin and left a deep bleeding cut. Shock I've not tried since! Grin Otherwise her first word will be "F*!"

mawbroon · 25/04/2006 08:35

Well, Johnny is officially a piglet. He weighed in yesterday at 15lbs which is 1lb and 3oz gain in three weeks. I do have to bear in mind that he didn't poo before being weighed and had a tummy full of milk, but even so, it's way more gain than previously. He's still below the 9th centile line though, but like I keep saying, that's only a graph. This morning, he has wolfed down a whole banana and last night he fed himself a load of broccoli with great excitement whilst ignoring the sweet potato and turkey on the plate. I think he is attracted to green food which is good news!!

MG - sorry to hear about your situation. I hope you are feeling a bit better about things now.

Elf - thats a bummer about your work, are you going to contest it or will they stick to their guns?

DH is away down south with his work today and tomorrow so I'm going to see my parents which is always a bit of a break as I don't have to do any cooking/cleaning etc etc.

Oh no I think Johnny has just filled his nappy. I'm dreading this after the amount of food he has managed to pack away Shock That's the end of the nice breastmilk nappies Sad

Jockey · 25/04/2006 10:53

Sorry not posted for ages due to Easter holidays but - we haven't been anywhere, just really busy coping/muddling through.

MG very sorry to hear about your news.

Tiny bit of food getting eaten here, not much. No teeth, but it seems like people have been saying "oh, she must be teething!" for an eternity. Sitting up but she loses concentration when someone talks to her, she just smiles and flops down. Still bf and waking up quite a bit, she often ends up with me.

Free time, mmm what's that? If I could offload the little 'un in the morning I would be free for TWO WHOLE HOURS! Must get thinking about that.

Will quickly try and read the thread now...

morningpaper · 25/04/2006 13:13

After attending the 3 year old who was being sick last night (4 time - 4 loads of washing!) I tried to creep back into my bed in the dark and I forgot I'd put the baby in my bed and I completely CRUSHED her poor little tummy with my hand! It was awful. She squeaked but didn't wake up but I felt terrible ... MUST put the light on in future!

jai38 · 25/04/2006 14:17

Sorry to everyone who is having a cr*p time -things always get better when the sun is out for good - or a least seem better

BLW is going well ds has an addiction to cheery tomotos, cut in half, he sucks out the contents and then throws them away.

gave him liver last night as a finger food and he could not get enough, has no teeth but chews so hard he goes through.

we are still waking up a night so have now impemented 10.30 dream feed and diluted feed at the next wake up which seems to be about 3am, we are down to six ounces in 8 ounces of water and i take the bottle away as soon as he breaks for air and put him back to bed. he whinges a little but then goes back to sleep

I am hoping this works and working and waking up is not working for me!!!!

mummygow · 26/04/2006 08:52

Right I have a really daft question - when you are giving your lo's the food to eat themselves how big are you cutting it up. I imagine it has to be chuncky to hold and bite on rather than small and just going down the back of their throat???????????

jai38 · 26/04/2006 09:46

I do them quite big , small enough to get in mouth but big enough to pick up about double aa batery size, with pots etc I do wedges

nervousmum · 26/04/2006 12:27

God, i hate my employers! Having previously agreed to me reducing my hours, the other manager has now got involved and said it's not feasible as it stands and i have to go in for another meeting on FridaySad. The thing is, i previously worked 12.5 hour shifts, which really isn't conducive to being a mother. The only way round it is to go back on my existing pre-pregnancy hours but just do nights, and that's only if they'll agree to that! At least that way, i could still spend time with Joey during the day, even if i will become a walking zombie!! Sorry for the rant, it's just that i'm feeling a bit delicate emotionally at the moment, and i was led to believe that this had been all sorted and agreed when i went in and saw them 2 weeks ago!

Elf1981 · 26/04/2006 12:44

aw, nm, how awful for you. Cant believe they initally agreed then changed their minds. Hope things work out for you.

mummygow · 26/04/2006 14:00

NM that's awful - you cant possibly have no sleep that would tip you over the edge, can they not come up with some kind of solution to suit both?

morningpaper · 26/04/2006 20:48

Mine can't handle lumps like that, she CHOKES! It's mostly all sloppy mush, I keep giving myself a heart attack every time she starts gagging on something.

ponto · 26/04/2006 21:06

Dh away for the night so have finally caught up on this thread. Very impressed with the amount of food some of your babies are managing. We started weaning 2 weeks ago with baby rice mixed with formula (I can't be bothered expressing) and Alice really enjoyed it, but after a few days I found she was getting a rash around her mouth after eating. So I've moved over to fruit and veg and will try again with formula in a few days to see if it really is a milk reaction. I can hardly face it though as I dread her having a dairy allergy, don't know what I would feed her.

Otherwise she is doing well, has one tooth and can sit up by herself fairly reliably. She doesn't much like being left lying down on the floor to play so sits in her high chair or pushchair a lot, watching me and dd1. I think that's why she's not really rolling over properly yet, but I'm sure she will get the hang of it eventually.

Have sorted out nearly 4 more months of unpaid maternity leave, so will be poor but happy. Hope all those with work problems get them sorted asap. Sad

mawbroon · 26/04/2006 21:42

MG - I am giving Johnny food in fairly big chunks so that he can get a hold of it properly and bite off manageable sized pieces with his gums. As for banana, I give him half a banana to hold, but once he has mushed it a bit it gets very slippery and I have to hold it for him. I can't believe that such a small baby can eat a whole banana only 5 days after starting weaning Shock I know I said this before, but I can't get over it ShockShock and he's feeding it to himself, it's not like I am forcing it down Shock

jai - I'm going to try Johnny on cherry toms. What else are you giving your lo as finger foods? I am a lazy mummy and things that you just peel and hand to the baby are my ideal weaning foods Wink Cherry toms don't even need peeling Grin We've tried sweet potato quarters (skinned) as they only take 5 mins in the microwave, broccolli as it has an in built handle for holding, carrot and turnip sticks (boiled), avocado (which I ended up having to hold for his as it's so slippery) strips of cooked chicken and cooked turkey. Johnny is so funny - he looks suspiciously at new foods and then licks them before pulling a face. I have to try so hard not to laugh as I'm sure it will have some detrimental psychological effect on him. Wink

NM that is really pants about your work. Are you in a position to tell them to shove it and get a job elsewhere?

I am trying to organise a little holiday for us in September. DH is to be best man at his pals wedding in Gloucestershire in September. It's a no kids affair, and there is no way I am leaving Johnny at home for two nights. So, we have decided to make a weeks holiday or so out of it and bring the PILs down for a couple of night to babysit. RTL I might look you up when I'm down. Be warned Wink

Elf1981 · 26/04/2006 21:59

MB - I also have to avoid laughing at the faces pulled over new foods. I gave her a strawberry the other day, she licked it and looked really shocked, then she started eating it, and loves it now! She does it with all new foods, a sort of "ay up, what's this one then?!" face
