I hope they are as good as the last 6!

Don't worry MM - we still give Joey his milk feeds (and most of his water/juice!) through a bottle, simply because he won't take from a cup yet despite all my efforts! I have just ordered a NUK sippy cup though (he uses their bottles already), so watch this space!

Joey was crawling round earlier, and i was shocked how little effect my previous efforts of babyproofing had! Looks like i'm going to have to go out and buy loads more cupboard locks and paraphenalia (?sp) as i clearly have a very inquisitive child, who wants to open all the doors, and not just the ones i thought necessary to shut NM x

Elf1981 · 29/08/2006 20:07

Evelyn took 10 steps in a row today.
Chuffed mummy. She does have a little wiggly bum when she walks

Elf1981 · 29/08/2006 20:12

NM - I have cupboards full of bottles that didnt work. Mind you, I went the same way with bottles - one day we brought about 10 bottles, none worked, only the NUK. I think I remember you going through the same type of thing?
here we started with the Easiflow cup 6+ which even DH & I found hard to drink from, after a few similar types, we worked backwards to the First Cup which will get your carpet wet but it helped Evelyn figure out what she needed to do. So then we ended up with this

nervousmum · 29/08/2006 20:24

You've got a good memory Elf We actually got the NUK bottles in the end on your recommendation!

Unfortunately we've tried the Avent Magic Cup, amongst others, with no luck. My HV is unconcerned (she thinks he's just being a typical awkward boy!), and said so long as he's getting fluids in, the container is unimportant at this stage. I'll just keep trying! NM x

Elf1981 · 29/08/2006 21:06

The only problem with trial and error is the expense!!
Evelyn also likes drinking out of one of those clear cups you get at vending machines (my dad gets stacks of cups) but I dont trust her to do the grin and chuck the cup all over daddy thing.

Elf1981 · 29/08/2006 21:07

I deffo spent more money on bottles than cups though. I could have wept with delight when I discovered NUK.

mawbroon · 30/08/2006 09:39

Congratulations Evie on those 10 steps!
Johnny's bum seems to be glued to the floor. He could get from one side of the room to the other if he really wanted to, but it would take him all day!! No interest in crawling or pulling himself up at all. I got him weighed yesterday and he is 21lbs 12oz. I have a really sore back after walking for over an hour carrying him on Monday so that is the end of the backpack and I am going buggy shopping today. I will have to aquaint myself with all the lifts and dropped kerbs etc now.

Re cups - on the very rare occasions when Johnny gets EBM we are still using a bottle. He gets water at each meal and at other times through the day just out of an open cup (no handles) which I hold for him. Except he doesn't drink much before he sticks his hands in and puddles about. I have consistently told him "no" about this, and also about trying to chew the handles in the bath. I am worried that he will headbut it and knock his teeth out. We have been moving him away, saying and signing "no". Last night, he was testing us by going to do it then checking to make sure that we were going to say no. He's fly that boy!

Daisy05 · 30/08/2006 10:52

Hi, am new to MN, have one DD born 21/10/05. Just thought would introduce myself & see how you're all doing.

mozarellamamma · 30/08/2006 10:57

thanks for all your support on the bottle/cup thing. we also find the doidy cup is quite good for lunch and dinner sips by the way. stells just about manages to hold the NUK but doesn't tip it far enough to get the liquid in bless her!! we tried her with a straw too but she hasn't quite got a stong enough suck (tho it felt pretty strong when i breastfed!!). we now have three milk feeds a day - what does everyone else do? I still give her a feed first thing and then breakfast - do you think i should reverse that. just wondering.

i LOVE the wiggly bum. i bet it's even more squeezable than ever Elf! Stell's is a stealth crawler and waggles like a duck across the floor.

NM I know what you mean about babyproofing! we've moved all the worrying kitchen stuff top the higher cupboards so now if she goes snooping it's just bits of tupperware which does much to entertain her of course!! i think we should get some catches and stuff.

oh we went to look at colchester and really didn't like it soooo we are now going to peek at wivenhoe, witham and arlesford which are nearby villages so fingers crossed. otherwise we will need to change the plan to kent - anyone know much about it? mm x

nervousmum · 30/08/2006 20:11

I live in Kent! Lovely place, but v expensive housing-wise in certain areas. My house is still up for sale if you're interested, at a very reasonable price!!

I've ordered over £70 worth of stuff for re-baby proofing! Mind you, that does include £40 for a curved gate to fit our current awkwardly shaped staircase (i was going to wait until we moved, but Joey keeps trying to climb the stairs, and his safety must come first). We already had basic locks on the kitchen cupboards, but Joey has already sussed out how to open them, so i've ordered some special locks that can only be opened with a very strong magnet. Hopefully they'll be worth the expense!

As for milk drinks, Joey has 3 a day too. He has the first one after breakfast, one mid-afternoon after his nap, and one before bed. Although he drank gallons yesterday. He normally has about 600-700mls milk and 400mls juice or water in a day, but yesterday he had 1600mls in 24 hours! Mind you, he's eaten me out of house and home again, so i think it's growth spurt time!

nervousmum · 30/08/2006 20:12

PS - Mawbroon, how did the buggy shopping go?

And welcome to Daisy NM x

Elf1981 · 30/08/2006 23:50

welcome to the thread Daisy

Baby proofing - we have a stair gate between the kitchen and living room. Cant have one on the stairs as it's all open plan. Just using observant eye at the moment for when she's anywhere near the stairs!

Evie walked halfway across the CM's room today and then about exploded in delight with all the people clapping at her.

I read somewhere that when babies learn new things, it can disrupt sleep. I think its true - I've just put her down again, for about the 10th time tonight. I expect I'll be up and down all night!

MB - Evie beats me to the punchline when I say no. Usually I said "Evelyn, NO!" but now when she's doing the same naughty thing, I say "Evelyn" and she says "No!" before I do!

Elf1981 · 30/08/2006 23:56

re feeding:

I b.feed first thing in morning
Breakfast about an hour later at CM's.
She'll have 8 oz milk during the day at CMs plus water
Home with us and tea.
B.feed at bedtime.

mawbroon · 31/08/2006 08:57

Welcome to Daisy. My ds Johnny was also born on 21st October as was Mozerellamammas dd (if I remember correctly) and another poster called RedTartanLass's dd was also born on 21st.

I got a buggy yesterday. I went for a Maclaren Triumph. Just quite basic but should do until he's walking. Johnny didn't seem that fussed by it yesterday when we were out, but I am going to take badly to having to find all the lifts, having to find mother and baby toilets (I just used to be able to go with JOhnny still in the backpack), not being able to go on the grass etc etc. My sister's dd was a right skinny minnie and was 20lbs at 18 months so she was able to carry her until then!

Elf - Johnny's sleep is unsettled too. He is right under a thundercloud on that chart that I sent you so I really think there is some truth in it.

I have my first potential mindee coming today to look round and wade through the paperwork

Daisy05 · 31/08/2006 09:44

Thanks. How lovely that they have the same birthday! And not long now til the big day...am getting excited and can't believe they've only been around 10 months. Seems like forever.
Elf- is Evie walking alone?? Wow. DD walks really well holding on to something or someone but won't try alone. She was actually due mid Nov but came early. Seems to be pretty much on track tho.

Elf1981 · 31/08/2006 13:48

Yes, she is walking alone. She's been standing for ages now by herself, well, since July anyway! She's taken the odd steps over the past month or so but this is the most she has done without holding onto anything. Bless her!

MB - hope the potential mindee visit goes well!

mawbroon · 01/09/2006 09:44

Oh dear. What a nightmare night. Johnny woke at 4.15am and that was him. I got into the spare bed with him for a cuddle/feed which often does the trick allowing him to go back to bed, but last night he was adamant that I wasn't going anywhere and was going to be the milk bar on tap. Like you say Elf, I do think it's connected to the big developments which are happening just now. He managed to stand for a second holding on to something which is a huge thing for him. Couple this with the new images he will be taking in whilst in his new car seat and buggy, I think his little brain has gone into overload!! He is trying to speak as well. Although the words aren't recognisable at all, he always makes the same sounds which I am interpreting as "nappy", "daddy", "water". And at 5am this morning, I swear he said "lilk" (ie milk) He's bossing me around and he's only 10 months.

mawbroon · 01/09/2006 10:47

I don't believe it! I left Johnny sitting in the hall for 2 seconds while I got my coat. When I came back, he was playing with the socket cover which he has pulled out of the socket. Well, they do their job really well, eh?

mawbroon · 01/09/2006 17:31

and another thing! I went to get him from his nap. This is the boy who has never ever ever rolled over from his back and I found him lying on his front with his feet at the head end of the cot with both legs sticking out through the bars. What on earth was he doing????

He seems to be on fast forward and everything is all happening very quickly.

nervousmum · 01/09/2006 19:23

Aww, sounds like he's having fun Mawbroon

Joey went thruogh this about a month ago, then all of a sudden he was crawling, pulling himself up on everything, and cruising round the furniture! He's now at the tentative 'proper' first steps unaided stage. 3 weeks till his first birthday too - Where has the time gone?!?

Have a good weekend All, NM x

nervousmum · 01/09/2006 19:24

Sorry, that should have said 'through'

Elf1981 · 01/09/2006 21:18

I cant believe they're nearly a year old!

Evelyn has been trotting around at the CM's today, bless her. It's still a bit odd seeing her walking, so used to seeing her crawling, or even just sitting there, so it is odd to see her walking iuswim!

Elf1981 · 01/09/2006 21:20

Hope that things get better soon MB - Evie went through this, waking constantly etc and I'm sure it's around all the big milestones - she did it when she first learnt to roll over, but I think it was because she kept getting stuck

Yokefleet · 02/09/2006 22:03

What a busy lot of babies (or toddlers ) we have!!
We have had a busy week with my MIL and 9yr neice and nephew staying (they have gone home today ) I am ready for a nice quite evening.
Welcome Daisy
Congratulations to Evie!! Thomas has started taking a few steps today (about an hr after MIL left to drive back up to Yorkshire - naughty boy ) He managed 6 steps but then decided that he didn't want to be stood up again and when we tried to lift him up he kept his legs up in the seated position!!
mb hope your back is feeling better. I have no idea how much Thomas weighs now will wait for his 12month check now I think (not been weighed since 8m) I hope your mindee visit went well.
As for qty of milk (sorry can't remember who asked?? ) Thomas has 4 bottles of 5oz each - after breakfast about 9am, after lunch around noon, about 3pm and then his bedtime one at about 6.15pm. He also takes several oz of water through the day too.
elfmb Hope you have better nights tonight with your lo's
We have been really lucky with Tom's sleep this last 2 weeks whilst dh has been on holiday, we usually have to have him up between 6 and 6.30am but whilst dh has been off apart from the 1st couple of days he hasn't been waking until around 8am and today it was 8.30!!!!!!!!OMG just a shame that dh is back at work on Monday so its back to the early starts again
Anyway better go and get the bottles done!

Congratulations to the babies taking their first steps. I wish mine would get on with it - fed up with her picking stuff up off the floor. The sooner she is standing the better. Don't think this will be for a few weeks yet though.

Anyway she definitely rules the roost in this house! She screams if someone takes something from her (usually something she shouldn't be tampering with). She won't play with hardly any of her own toys & always wants what the others have got. I've made up a set of old keys for her but she still wants mine - not daft are they!!!

Will try to post more now that the school term has started (hooray!).
