Shiny new thread: we forgot to discuss the title this time!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
AnAirOfHalloween · 08/10/2012 22:09

Aaron has the same thing. His temp was 42c when i took it before calpol and he is burning hot and saying he is cold and his legs hurt!
He has woken up for a wee and gonne back to sleep in his own bed but im worried about him. He had a fit due to his temp when he was 18 months so im always worried when he is ill and i dont sleep that well and i have to check on him.
The fit was very scary and i never want it to happen again.

I will be making a drs appointment for him tomoro.

Hope is perfect as normal its only Aaron i worry about all the time and seems to take up most of my time.

AnAirOfHalloween · 08/10/2012 22:19

Umm everyone has ff car seats. Im even more confussed now as to which one to get.

I have this worry: i buy a ff seat and have no accident as dh is a good driver but i spend the next three years worring incase we do and i didnt get the rf seat.

Or

i do get the rf seat and have no accident cos we buy it but hope there is no accident and three years later im upset cos i spent £319 on a car seat and i could have got one from Asda ff for £25.

Im no good at making dessions :(

OiMissus · 08/10/2012 22:42

I went to pramworld in Wigan where I could see a selection and try them in the car. The cheapest seat there was £85.
There's the In Car Safety Centre too (Milton Keynes, I think) that also show rf as well as ff. my advice would be to go and try a few out, then you can choose what's best for you.

LittleMissFlustered · 08/10/2012 23:42

My advice is to not buy the cheapest just because it is cheap. As Oi says you're best having a play with them. Mothercrap have a fitting service too, if the two places mentioned are too far away, and thy should let you see how the seats you're looking at fit with your wheels. Also, it's worth remembering that its not a case of good v bad with rear and forward facing. It's good v more ideal. It's advisable to rearface for as long as possible, but a decent well fitted forward facing seat is not a bad thing.

One thing I remember being told by a firefighter leading a chat on road safety with children is that one of the scariest dangers in a collision isn't the impact itself, as cars are remarkable these days, but the in-car environment. In an impact, everything in your car not strapped down is a weapon. Loose change and bits and bobs can often cause nasty injuries. So tidy away your gubbins into the glove box!

Hope you're feeling better soon Northern, sounds like you've got a viral party going on in your bones:(

Octoboy never sleeps through. He is always up at least three/four times a night. His chest is better than it was this time last week though, which is something:)

Off to try for some kip now. Wish me luck!

Aethelfleda · 09/10/2012 07:10

morning girls. Get-well wishes to poorly mummies and LOs...

OP posts:
Figgygal · 09/10/2012 07:14

lmf I had the same talk on car seats and general road safety and had same warning about flying items and that a box of tissues on a parcel shelf in a 30mph collision will hit you as hard as a brick being thrown at you.....scary!!

I need to get a car seat for my silly car now he's out of the rf but it will have to go on front passenger seat as the rear seats r bench seats and not wide enough for a car seat. It's a 21 year old car so has no air bag but I am worried it will just fold like a piece of paper in an accident, he doesn't go in it much but had best get on and get one.

Off to work today worked from home yesterday wasn't very productive due to a head cold so will be on crazy catch up duty today ......can't be arsed Sad

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 09/10/2012 07:24

Hope all poorly mummies & babies feel better soon.

I'm joining the feeling poorly bandwagon. Not sure what's wrong with me Sad just feel fuzzy, bit nauseous and shattered.

My girls have been good as gold tho which helps alot.

Tuesdays are my day off work. DP is working from home so he can help with Sky thankfully.

Is anyone here Robbie Williams fans?

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 09/10/2012 07:26

Carseats. We have got a FF seat. I prefer that as I can see my little lady. I've got the same style that I used for Darcie and was brilliant as can recline when she sleeps too.

GeeandTee · 09/10/2012 07:41

I have the same FF one as oi. DS loves it and it has very good safety ratings. I think you should also factor in that if your DCs hate rear facing and complain/cry/grizzle that is a distraction that could massively increase your chances of an accident when you're driving. DD is still RF and I've put a mirror on the back seat so I can see her in the rearview mirror but I still end up swivelling round to see her better when I'm driving, which isn't safe!

GeeandTee · 09/10/2012 07:44

dsm are you sure you're not pregnant?!

DD still waking hourly, took her for another check at GP and all fine, he doesn't think it can be a food intolerance as she's fine in the day and she will sleep through one day a week or so. Also got my CS scar checked and they think its nerve damage so given me Capsicum gel which makes the skin burn/tingle to try to re-educate the nerve endings. Not looking forward to using it!

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 09/10/2012 07:52

Pretty sure I'm not pregnant had my period and according to my AF calendar I'm only just starting to ovulate. I'm not on any contraceptives but we use condoms and none has broken as far as I'm aware!

AWomanCalledHorse · 09/10/2012 08:07

We're going to FF when DS is poking over the top of the seat, we've got a Britax firstclass plus (stage 0-4) & it's bulky.
The sort of accidents in which DS will die or be serverly injured FF are the sort of accidents in which he'' die/be injured RF.
We've discussed it at length & no know one (including traffic investigators etc) who've done ERF.

LMF, DH's biggest bug bear at work is people with dogs running about the cars, some people have no idea how things work in accidents!
We've already put the child lock on the door next to DS.

Gee, glad things went ok at the Drs, hope the capiscum helps!

Seven, Grin excellent to hear you're progressing well, do you think you'll be able to relax a bit about being pg now?

Hope everyone gets well soon!
I'm symptom spotting here, I never feel nauseous unless I'm pg or on a boat....and I'm deffo not on boat. But bfn yesterday!

OiMissus · 09/10/2012 09:01

(What's bfn?)
BOi had a bad night last night. (Will it ever end? :) ) He slept ok-ish in the evening, upstairs. But when we went down to bed, he woke and was inconsolable. After what seemed like an hour of rocking, singing and cooing, trying teetha powder, and a bottle of water (he didn't take it), we gave him 4oz of milk. Then he calmed down. (Don't know why he was hungry.)
But he still wouldn't settle and go to sleep, he was wide awake after all the screaming. :(
He refused to lie in his cot, and only settled when he lay next to me, and I curled around him and held the little tinker down... :) He physically fights sleep with flailing arms and kicking legs, and he's a champion wriggler. (Octoboy the 2nd!)
Anyway, he woke frequently and we snuggled constantly, and between us probably got a couple of minutes. :)
I'm fine.
But I could have killed DH. He was being such an idiot. BOi was screaming, and DH wasn't getting far consoling him, so I told him to pick him up and cuddle him. So DQH (DramaQueenH) petulantly swung him up, and swung him another way, and BOi was writhing around, and DQH was saying "You'll probably tell me I'm doing this wrong now", and I bit my lip, because BOi's head was hanging off DQH's arm, no support at all, so he was looking at me upside down and screaming... I watched helpless for a short period, and then took BOi from him. And cuddled him properly. Boi calmed a little and was chewing his finger. I thought maybe his teeth were hurting, so I asked DQH for a teetha sachet, so he flung back the duvet, ... to reach to his bedside cabinet...
I've told him a few times now that he needs to chill out as BOi will pick up on his mood, but he's too much of an drama queen to grasp the idea. Eventually he dropped the DQ and became helpful and supportive - getting water and then the milk.
Oh good bob, when I said, let's give him some milk, DQH said "But then he'll have won". Believe me, this was not a little boy testing us to get what he wanted. this was a little boi who had been screaming for about an hour and either was genuinely hungry or really really just needed something to calm him down. I saw no smirks of victory.

OiMissus · 09/10/2012 09:08

Oh but we almost have a first word. For ages he's been dadada-ing, and nanana-ing, and making other sounds. He knows who dada is, and that's probably his almost first word. But his most pointed/directed word is "teddy"
He loves his big teddy, and is always kissing it. he can almost say "sandy" too, apparently, although I haven't heard it. This is the name of one of the GPs dogs. Sandy loves BOi, and BOi loves sandy. So much so that he now wants to give Sandy the big, open, mouth-to-mouth kisses. WE are trying to dissuade tis. I'm not sure that Sandy is so keen either. But they are great friends. The daft dog has even developed Lassie-type-tendencies, of alerting my mum when BOi wakes, etc.
Grin

LittleMissFlustered · 09/10/2012 09:30

BFN is mumsnet for 'big fat negative'.

Xiaoxiong · 09/10/2012 10:33

Biggest of hugs for BJR - how is it going? I've been thinking about you all weekend.

AWCH sorry for the BFN. I know it will be a BFP soon Grin

It's always funny reading back after a few days in RL and seeing that everyone else's days reflect ours so directly - uncharacteristic vomiting, mega clinginess, saying "deh-dee" which I assume means "teddy".

He has two teddies - we have christened one "Teddy Manusco" after the character in Confederacy of Dunces and the other is "Orwellian Teddy" because he has a t-shirt that says "I'm the Big Brother!". When he manages to say "Orwellian" we'll have a party Smile

figgy and northern I've had sciatica this morning for the first time since the dumpling was born. Hopefully not a permanent fixture in my lower back, ouch!

aethel am following your house saga with interest (self-interest?) Smile

DSM I'm sorry to say I'm not a RW fan ever since he murdered his way through many of my favourite songs on that swing album he did. His pop stuff is better though. Are you going to see him in concert?

MissRee · 09/10/2012 11:33

I have a snotmonster at home too :( She slept for about 5 hours during the day yesterday at my Mum's too, poor little munchkin.

She did do two wees and a poo on the potty though!!! Just a case of Nanny putting her on there at random intervals at the moment but she's doing something on it every time she sits on it so she definitely knows what its for Grin

We have Dada, Mama, Nana and yesterday randomly, bubbles!

She had us in stitches on Friday last week. DP and I both had the day off (hospital and haircuts) so we treated ourselves to some dinner out. Freya was sat in her highchair, happily munching on a bit of bread when two ladies sat down next to us. Clear as anything, Freya turned to them and said "Ellooo" and gave them a big grin!!! Now, I'm not sure if its just a coincidental noise but its not the first time she's done it!

hawthers · 09/10/2012 13:11

Lordy lord. F has been asleep since 10. No idea what has prompted the epic nap but I've been doing sod all since 10.30 expecting him to wake up. Shit I've just wasted the entire morning...

Figgygal · 09/10/2012 13:23

Hawthers i hate it when they do that!! Chance would be a fine thing we are lucky if we get 30min naps at the minute.

DS now says ta when you give him something the cm noticed it last week i dismissed it but he does he really does!!

dsm have to confess i used to hate RW thought he was an egotistical arsehole and that he couldnt sing.....but have softened a little ....why?

AWomanCalledHorse · 09/10/2012 16:05

My BUBBLES! MissRee, that's great.

Oooh Figgy, I must've inherited your hatred for Robbie! I've never liked him but recently it's gotten worse (think it was the 'I can't fly to London for the Olympics'...'ooh look I'm in London promoting my album').

Xiao! Are you another who likes 'old people music'? DH always takes the mick out of my love for 50s-60s music.
Hope your sciatica stops being a pain soon (literally).

Oi, hope you have a better night tonight!

Everything tastes of mouldy cheese today so still hoping it turns into a BFP! That or I'll lose lots of weight through not eating.

Baking DEC-ers; has anyone got a fantastic recipe for a vegetable (not carrot) cake/brownies?

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 09/10/2012 16:38

MissRee That's brilliant.

RW - I love. He's a brilliant entertainer. Couldn't get tickets tho. They sold out fast Sad

I'm off to Zumba tonight much to my dismay lol.

Oi Happy 40th.

Sick of the cold weather already. Need some St Lucia sun!

Xiaoxiong · 09/10/2012 16:56

Yes yes yes make the beetroot chocolate cake by Nigel Slater. Absolute bliss!

And yes I like old people music. In fact I like dead people music - you should see the dumpling's face when we crank up the Josquin and Bach, he is completely rapt. (Or he is so bored he has turned into a zombie...) In terms of pop music my tastes are definitely catholic and it's easier to list what I don't like instead of what I do.

Don't likes:
synthetic over-produced pop music (eg. Katy Perry, any boyband)
house/trance/hardcore/rave (eg. whatever bass thumping shite our Ibiza wannabe lame-ass downstairs neighbor puts on at 3pm on a fucking Saturday afternoon when the baby is napping)
misogynistic violent rap (eg. Nelly)
self-indulgent out of tune moaners with poor vocal technique (eg. Adele)
self-consciously quirky hipster moaners (eg. the Decembrists, Neutral Milk Hotel)

Whoof, clearly I needed to get all that off my chest! I like pretty much everything else really.

Xiaoxiong · 09/10/2012 17:07

DSM my prescription:

  • peppermint hot choc from your coffee shop of choice
  • a new warm scarf and snuggly warm socks (these are brill)
  • a rough apple tart for dessert this weekend
  • kicking leaves in your wellies
  • any chance of a wood fire/bonfire?

I love the autumn Smile

NorthernChinchilla · 09/10/2012 17:11

Woah. I have not been this ill in ages. I've had a second day off work, and very much doubt I'll be going in tomorrow, although I could work from home. I think I can classify this as flu now: between the masses of green snot (sorry), raw throat, aching all over, random shivers and sweats (I woke up this morning with wet PJs) and zero appetite, I feel it's a little more than a cold. Thanks for the good wishes all.

Xiao, that's so crap about the sciatica, poor you. It's doubly irritating by being agony and absolutely invisible to the naked eye. I had it during pregnancy, and find that now it does re-occur occasionally, so sounds like we're in the same boat.

Glad they're doing something about the scar Gee, but ouch! does that sound like a painful way to treat it.

It's weird Oi, I've come across a few threads where the OH (and it does tend to be the OH or occasionally the PiLs) are obsessed with this 'winning' thing, and doing anything to stop the baby doing so.... At our LOs' age, they are not capable of being manipulative!

Soon, sooooon DP will be home with bags full of paracetmol and decongestant...

seven77 · 09/10/2012 17:48

northen sounds like you're pretty rough, tell DP to get day nurse, they're the only ones that work. Hope you're well again soon!

oi I'm not surprised you were annoyed with DH. Hope you get a better night, I tend to just give them calpol when they get in that state tbh.

AWCH I was 8 days late before I got a BFP with Eva, despite testing from when AF was due. My fingers are firmly crossed for you. I'm a bit more relaxed now thanks, won't relax completely until after the 12 week scan though.

xiao another firm lover of autumn here! Apple and blackberry crumble mmm.
