I thought I was right - took me ages to post so we crossed - are we allowed to ask how old?

Question for you girls who are bf. All the stuff I have read gives recommendations on number of feeds for newborns - but what about when they reach 6 weeks+ etc - how many times then? I'd find it useful for any guidance - dd2 seems fine etc but just like to know that she prob is having enough - as she would sleep if I let her etc. TIA Smile

Morning

Happy Birthday Flame (and belated wishes Hotmama - I blame the engagement news for us all forgetting to wish you a happy birthday.)

Ds is trying to find his thumb, too but still going for the whole fist more often. Also very smily all of a sudden Smile

terrible night last night. Didn't settle and I feel like I was feeding him all night. Eventually went to sleep after DP had gone to work...woke at 8.15, and then had mad rush to get to school, with crying baby as he thought he needed feeding again. He's asleep now and I really want to go back to bed, but I know he'll wake up as soon as my head hits the pillow.

Hotmama - can't help re number of feeds. I don't read baby care books at all, and just feed on demand. Wouldn't wake a sleeping baby to feed past the first month though.

Ds is getting more baths than the DDs at the momentBlushI'm a terrible mummy, and so disorganised. Used to bath them daily, then alternate day s...now its just not often enough. Must get my act together.

hotmama · 28/03/2006 09:34

At 39, I am happy to forgo greetings - but thanks!

Started a thread about feeds - so hopefully will get advice. Smile

Belated Happy Birthday HM!!!

I'm 25 :)

With feeds, I have always been of the opinion of they will feed when they are hungry. I know that about 3 hours is an average gap for a newborn (not allowing for growth spurts), and about 4 hours for bottlefed. Unless they suddenly stop putting on weight, then they tend to let you know how much they want.

He's still asleep despite me hoovering the entire house around himAngryWho wants to bet on how long he stays asleep now I've given up on going back to bed?

Tabs · 28/03/2006 10:51

Morning all - what a thoroughly crap afternoon/evening I had yesterday. Fed constantly (bar nappy changes, a whole 10mins in basket and 10 mins on gym) from 2:30pm - 11:30pm!!!! She'd go all sleepy when feeding, but when I tried to move her she'd wake and demand more. Wondered at 10pm if I was reading her wrong so gave her gripe water just in case, but still whingey. Ended up getting her to bed with me with my arm under her neck at midnight, so then had to stay in that position until 5ish this morning. She then had another big feed then slept still swaddled but cuddled up to me and loosely under my duvet too. Managed to get up at 9 and leave her asleep on her front in my bed until 10:15. All in all a nice medley of things you're not meant to do! Looks like our days and nights will all be muddled now.

Happy birthday flame - sounds like you have a nice day lined up.

Another one who's a bit lax on bathing here - she gets one about every 4 days. Glad it's not just me.

As for number of feeds, I think the baby whisperer suggests that they should get about 8, but reckon that Pippa prob does about 6 or 7 on an average day.

We are with the Abbey too, but find them ok - no worse than any other bank anyway! Because the company that DH contracts for are crap at paying on time, he sometimes gets rather large payments going into our account in one go, and they always phone us up and say that they've noticed that we have a lot of money in our account and would we like to talk with an advisor about how to invest it - quite amuses us that they aren't used to it by now!

Birthday greetings for today and yesterdayGrin guess we all got excited by the big shiney ring and forgot the b'day bit!

Been to dr, she was really nice def thrush, have got cream for me and oral gel for LO, wants me to try that for 3 days then if no better have got another perscription for oral stuff to try to fix it.

Re feeding, I work on the theory that I never wake a sleeping baby unless I have to and they let you know when they are hungry, being on ds3 he gets woken quite a lot as I have to fit feeds around school run but wouldn't if I didn't have to. He finished feeding at 8-30, we went to schoolthen he fell asleep on the way to the dr and is still asleep, have got to go get ds2 at 11-30 so hoping he will stay asleep till we get back or I will have a cross baby on the way home again, he seems to not understand the idea that all babies stop crying in the pram and has yelled allthe way home a few times.

Wish I'd poked him and fed him now boobs getting fullWink

Chloe55 · 28/03/2006 11:43

Talking of waking them to feed - I'm in a dilemma. DS tends to feed every 3 hours, last feed was at 8.30 so he is due one now and then again at 2.30 which would be fantastic as I am at baby group form 1.30-3.20 then I have an my 6-weekly check at 3.30, then I have to venture over to mamas and papas but would be back for 5.30 so.........do I wake him now as it is 11.45 and he takes about 30mins to feed or just let him sleep and worry about the fact he might fall hungry at the docs/mamas & papas later?

Flamesparrow · 28/03/2006 11:59

If I've got something that I have to do, and know he will be hungry during it, then I tend to wake and feed (as late as possible before leaving), but the majority of the time, I try and leave him til he wakes and hollers.

He tends to have a feed at about 8am, then again at 11am, but often (especially if I have been in the car a lot) he will not want the 2pm one until about 3.25 - slap bang in the middle of school run. Depending on my mood I either wake and feed him about 2.30, or if I've been enjoying the peace and quiet - I sling him for the school run, and keep his fist near his mouth so that he can suckle until I get to my mum's at about 3.40 Blush. He tends to give in and go quiet until we get there.

The majority of the time though - if I can feed where I am (toddler group etc), then I say leave babies to sleep.

I have just realised how much I used the word "tend" in that post!!! Blush

Jasnem · 28/03/2006 12:02

I've just broken my don't wake a sleeping baby rule!
It was5 1/2 hours since I fed him, so I woke him at 11.30.
He'll probably not go back to leep 'til after I feed him again at 2ish before school run.
Don'tknow what to suggest. Every time I think I know what to expect in a day, he changes and does it all differently.

Frizbe · 28/03/2006 12:33

Jas, sounds like yours joined mine last night, after her being soo good for the nights, last night she decided to spurt and fed all evening until 12, then woke at 3.30 then again at 5.15, which resulted in me shouting loudly and making dd1 cry at 6am, when she insisted on turning the light on in dd2's room, when I took her in there to change her (dd1 got up at 6......grrrr) thus I managed to a) get no sleep, b) upset dd1 rather a lot c) upset hubby by upsetting dd1...ho hum........one of those days eh! dd2 has since joined Jas's ds and slept for 4hrs this am, she would have done 5, but I'm cruel and woke her for a feed, in attempt to shift the pattern a bit........

Hotmama Belated Happy Birthday, sorry got excited about your engagement too! also found that everytime I log on here dd2 demands me! If its any help to you I remember feeding dd1 in her sleep when she got older, so she slept all night, used to dream feed about 11 then as she got older 10pm so she'd go until 6-7am!! from 7pm hurrah!! oh and I'm also crap at bathing...

Flame, Happy Birthday! we're starting to chew fists here also, hurrah! Grin

Hope everyone else ok, you all seem to be getting on fine.

Helen, hope the thrush is sorted soon, and same for the rest of you dealing with it.

3k · 28/03/2006 12:37

Hello,

Happy Birthday Flame hope you have a great day. It is DH 30th today too Grin also belated wishes to Hotmama.

Had a late night with DS last night, he was feeding constantly from about 5pm until 1am!!! Eventually I laid him in his moses basket and hoped he would sleep and he did but he kept thinking he was hungry before that!! He then slept from 1am until 6.15am and is quite good at night but feeds every 1.5 - 2.5 hours during the day!! And he is bottle fed. Not sure if I should try and get him to go longer or not really but just feed when he cries for it at the moment. He is asleep in the nursery in his cot at the moment as he dropped off during his last feed so I popped him in there as I want him to try and get used to it.

I considered Abbey with the child trust fund too as we have our mortgage there but went with Nationwide in the end and they didnt ask for any ID. I did have DS birth certificate with me anyway so she took a copy but she said she didnt really need it.

Does anyone know if you claim tax credits if it interferes with your child benefit????? It says on the leaflet I got with child benefit that you have to inform them if you claim tax credits but I thought CB was paid to every child anyway????

Jasnem · 28/03/2006 12:51

3k CB isn't affected by tax credits(or anything else), but your tax credits will go up once you claim for child under 12 months so maybe thats why.

Tabs - funny timing, I have not been on for weeks but just snatching 10 mins now to catch up!

DD and I are well. She is a very active little girl and is awake a lot of the time now so is using all her food energy. She has been gaining weight and is now 9 pound 3 which is still a way off where she is "meant" to be.

We put her in her own room in her big cot about 10 days ago and she has done well. She is long and as I say active so there was no way she could stay in her basket, I wasn't getting a lot of sleep while co-sleeping and her cotbed wont fit in our room so all in all we had no option...it's working well for us.

I have not opened the CTF account yet, not sure who to go with.

We are going into my office today too see some old collegues before their redundency starts Sad

Hope you are all keeping well!!
