I'm struggling to convince DH on the ergo thing - he gets stuck on the idea that the baby bjorn can't be that bad or else baby bjorn wouldn't sell it and they wouldn't be so popular. (If John Lewis sell it, it must be ok). I've tried explaining it as maybe the bb isn't dangerous as such, but the ergo is just better for them but he's not having it Hmm. His arguments do male me wonder why, for example JL sell the BB but nothing like the ergo or similar? but I still want an ergo.

In fact he's now extending his argument to 'if BB make a dangerous carrier you shouldn't buy anything by bb'. This is because I want to look for one of the bb bouncy chairs that go up to 2 years Hmm.

I think he wouldn't care if I could get more than about £10 for selling our bb carrier, but the second hand marketing flooded with them!

I paid £33 for our first BB carrier that broke and £26 for our second on eBay biscuits, you might get slightly more? Here is my list of Reasons for an Ergo (having had both):

  1. The baby feels half the weight in an ERGO. Genuinely, due to how their weight is distributed
  2. The BB goes up to 10kg, or 12kg, depending what style you have. The ERGO will be used til E is about 2-4, like if you go on a 'proper' countryside walk as backpack carriers are SOOOO heavy or certainly til E is a decent walker and can do his own thing eg in playgrounds with DS1 he can be with you on your front/back and not left in a buggy before he's walking. My friend found that invaluable with her second DS.
  3. E can go on your back in an ERGO. Minus how heavy they feel by another half, and it is much better for pushing your eldest on a swing etc etc.
  4. If you need boot space going out you can ditch the pushchair and just carry E in the Ergo- up to age 10 months I could carry DD for up to 3 hours comfortably, I could do 30-40 minutes in the BB maximum by then as it killed my shoulders and back
  5. Its better for them and more comfortable because their weight is spread over bottom and thighs not hanging by their crotch. When I borrowed the Ergo at 9 months, DD would sleep up to an hour in the BB (carried by dh, I could barely do that long) but immediately slept 3 hours in the Ergo so she was clearly more comfortable.

The natural mamas websitehas a for sale section. This is the first time I've been on the laptop in about 6 weeks so I'm off to look now too- its very lentil-weavery but I hear very good things about it, and they are selling second hand slings. As your DH is tall, I've heard (at a sling meet) the Manduca highly recommended for taller men. You might spot one of those on there if no Ergos?

DreamingOfPeace · 03/07/2012 11:56

NB I only say up to 10 months because that is when I got pg again, we didn't do big walks in the first trimester, or most of second as I was too sick so didn't have anything to try again. Not that it would have been uncomfortable from then on.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 03/07/2012 13:01

Oooh, I want an Ergo too! Envy of Jen. I love your list of reasons for one, Dream. Must scroll back and find the list of non-fake sellers.

Biscuits, we do have TK Maxx and I did notice sleeping bags last time we were in! Excellent idea.

hawthers · 03/07/2012 13:03

Yrs to the infant insert jen but make sure you get a genuine ergo not a bloody good fake that I had until recently.

Just had a lady give us a sleep seminar. Worth considering for those with issues? She has a 99% success rate for one on one consultations.

Wowsers Hawthers - that sounds exciting. What sort of thing did she do?

OP posts:
JenFraggle · 03/07/2012 13:16

I've ordered from First Signs, they were ok, weren't they?

DH has always wanted to get a sling. He doesn't really know much about it and spotted the BabyBjorn one in Mothercare for £71 on Sat. I told him that you lot had had problems with that one and that the Ergo was considered a lot better, lasts for longer and is only £9 dearer. conveniently forgetting to add on price of insert He said to go for it so I did :o

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 03/07/2012 13:57

Have just sent DH the link to First Signs and to this page so he can read Dream's list of reasons for getting an Ergo. I want the Galaxy Grey one!

musicalmrs · 03/07/2012 14:13

I'll bear all this Ergo talk in mind for if we decide we want something more structured. Our Moby is working brilliantly for us at the moment though - no backache for me (hurrah!) and Iz sleeps happily in it for hours. May well change when she grows though..

Purple, thanks for your words of wisdom as always. Particular thanks for explaining breast compressions, as I'd never understood them before!

Hawthers, the sleep consultation sounds great!

Biscuits, thanks for linking to the travel Grobag - didn't know they existed! Only the other day we travelled back from somewhere late and I had to put Iz to bed with blankets, which she of course kicked off.. will have to keep an eye out for a travel one on offer.

Too, sorry to hear about M's sleep. Iz does the same thing with DH and his laptop! Girls clearly knowing how to wrap their fathers round their little fingers from an early age Wink

I think Iz may be quite refluxy. She has always spit up/been sick quite a bit, and is a very hiccupy baby - was in the womb and can still have 3-4 bouts a day. She's recently started really arching her back after feeds, and nearly every time I try to put her down on her back/right hand side after feeding at night (sometimes wakes herself up doing it too). I've heard putting them on their left is better... any other words of wisdom? Is this where tilting the basket can help?

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 03/07/2012 14:17

Hooray, have bought one! Yay! It's an investment. Grin

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 03/07/2012 14:21

Oh, cross post, Musical. I think tilting the basket is supposed to help with hiccups. M went through a hiccupy stage when she was very small and I tried tilting the basket - not sure if it helped or if she just grew out of it! Hopefully someone with more knowledge about reflux will be along soon.

hawthers · 03/07/2012 14:28

Sleep consultation went through the science of sleep, how much sleep they should get, outlines of different strategies and common problems. Think I have a few things to sort to help things here but we did get another full nights sleep last night. She also answered problems re the older one's sleep si hopefully we'll have some more good sleeping coming our way.

Biscuitsandtea · 03/07/2012 14:40

So how much sleep should they be getting? The $64,000 question ......

OP posts:
hawthers · 03/07/2012 14:50

At 3 months 5 hours in the day and 10 at nighttime. 6 months 3 and a half in the day and 11 ish at night. Will see if I can take a photo of the graph and add it to my profile. Just put f back down for the second half of his afternoon nap and then as I was leaving caught a whiff of poo - oh dear.

musicalmrs · 03/07/2012 14:55

Hurrah for buying one Too! As for tilting, her hiccups are never at night - hadn't thought of that before. How odd...

Hawthers, interesting! DD doesn't normally get anywhere near that amount during the day.

That said, it's looking like she might today - fell asleep after a baby group, then again after some food! I'm getting lots of online chores done, for a change...

Wants3 · 03/07/2012 15:13

I am angling for an ergo with DH by telling him how highly recommended they are on here! I need something for cross country dog walking!
D currently fighting sleep here,he had 15 mins in the car seat at lunchtime. He is now grumpy, just fed and won't be put down:(

DreamingOfPeace · 03/07/2012 15:28

Hmm. I have Ergo envy, but I can't decide whether to go straight for the Ergo, or try to get to a sling meet and try a Manduca- I know someone brings one, or go for a madame goo goo as they're so funky. ooh, or a Rose and Rebellion. Soooo many options!!!

too, of course its an investment, you're a dog walker planning at least one more baby- cheap at double the price :)

I have run out of energy. 3pm. It's going to be a looong afternoon.

pommedechocolat · 03/07/2012 15:47

That's sooo much sleep hawthers! Im pretty sure dd1 never slept that much and dd2 obviously gets nowhere near!

musical - 'typical' reflux symptoms should be helped by tilting basket/cot and most refluxers are happier on their front (up to the parent how to deal with this!). A is not helped by either though - another reason I think she has reflux caused by cmpi. Most babies with reflux grow out of it by 3 months (again those that don't more likely to be cmpi!).

musicalmrs · 03/07/2012 16:24

Thanks Pomme - will give it a go! She's definitely napped more today on her front on me - not sure how to deal with this at night but will have a think. She seemed quite happy on her side (when I suspected she was refluxy) until the last few nights (when I've been pretty sure!). She doesn't seem to be too bothered most of the time, except for the back arching at night when she's really seeming to be disturbed, so that's what I want to help her with!

pommedechocolat · 03/07/2012 16:52

Some people with babies who only settle on their tummies reflux or not use angel monitors musical but they've really expensive.

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 03/07/2012 17:16

Just wanted to say hi and let you know I'm still lurking. I've just been insanely busy the last few days. Today is my first day of supposedly "nothing", and yet it took me until 4.30pm just to send off a nursery registration form. Nothing else on my to-do list has been even started! I wish DD slept for 5 hours during the day! Not sure she's getting anything like enough sleep actually, because she doesn't sleep much at night either... [yet another thing to worry about emoticon]

No Brooking hard for Pomme's little A to keep improving. How is everyone else's sleep going? I hope Too's M settles back into good habits asap!

Loving the Ergo chat as well. One of DH's good friends very kindly bought a carrier for DH to use, and I know that DH won't want to get a different one simply because it would be like rejecting such a generous gift. So I'm too scared to google any reviews and see if it's any good Confused It's the Mamas & Papas Morph.

Biscuitsandtea · 03/07/2012 17:44

That looks quite clever Scream Smile. What a generous gift!! I would imagine the thing about not having knee to knee support applies to that as it does to the BB? But other than that it looks really functional and easy to use.

You see this is my big question mark over the ergo. BIG companies like Baby Bjorn and M&P make carriers that aren't knee to knee support, and that can face outwards. So is it really bad for the babies? and respectable retailers like JL sell BB and the like, but don't sell any of the ergo or similar things. If they are sooooo much better, why don't the big retailers sell them? If the BB style are so bad, why do the big retailers sell them?

OP posts:
DreamingOfPeace · 03/07/2012 19:47

biscuits, that's like saying if alcohol and cigarettes were really bad for you why would they sell them?! Confused Grin . It's going to be knowledge partly, whether they know they're not recommended and on the part of selling Ergo etc whether there's incentive for ERGObaby to want JL to sell their stock maybe?! Even precious little one or kiddicare or one of those websites sells a manduca. Just an opinion :)

I am now really really fed up, I just want the boys to calm down and go to sleep so I can buy some chocolate from the corner shop as an essential for today and go to bed!!!!

hawthers · 03/07/2012 20:08

Was on steady weight loss but have fallen off the wagon big style today scoffing loads of millionaires shortbread due to a tiff with DH. Grump
