Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
KateM77 · 15/04/2012 16:22

I haven't had a chance to catch up since last night but have a quick question for aethel if that's OK? I've just been told that DD's friend we saw on Fri has chicken pox. I've looked on NHS direct and it says newborn babies are amongst the most at risk. Do I assume DS being 4 months old is no longer classed as a newborn?

LittleMissFlustered · 15/04/2012 16:31

I hate McClarens, the suspension on them is non-existent:/

I hate trainers too though, so my irrationality ought to be taken with a liberal dose of "ignore the mad woman!":o

aethelfleda · 15/04/2012 16:36

Hi Kate: To be honest the risk is more related to how much exposure your LO got, how contagious the child was, and whether you are still breastfeeding. The worst-case scenario is below, and you can judge from that how likely there is to be a risk. It will come out 14-21 days from exposure.

Highest risk is:
If you saw the ill child from 48 hours prior to 48 hours past the first spots (as the viral load is highest at this early stage of illness)
If the child had prolongued close contact with little one (kissing/hugging/sharing a sofa) for 30 mins or longer.
(it's spit and coughing that spreads the virus most effectively though it also lives in spot blisters).
If you are no longer breastfeeding at all OR breastfeeding but mum is not immune. (you have chickenpox antibodies in your breastmilk which protect little one if you're immune)
If Your LO is premature or immunosuppressed (not the case I think?)

My DD2 got it at 7 months When i'd just put her in childcare :( but hey.

KateM77 · 15/04/2012 16:41

Aethel thanks so much for the speedy reply. DS should be in the clear then as I'm BFing, but quite likely DD will get it. We were in the park on Fri, and her and her friend sat on a little table at the cafe together having drinks and snacks. They often end up drinking from each other's cups. Oh well, it'll get it out of the way I suppose!

aethelfleda · 15/04/2012 16:42

Yep LMF, you're right about no suspension, but they are just so practical, fold up small (ish), never fall apart despite years of abuse, and are so much less cumbersome than some of the other brands. Plus you don't have to take out a mortgage to afford one -the Bugaboo Donkey is £1100, for Bob'S sake! (Ok, I cheated, that one's a double, but single Stokkes and bugaboos can set you back £600+ easily)....

Ps is it just me or do Stokke Explorys look like someone's cannibalised an office chair and a car seat? What IS the attraction of the baby-onna-stick look??

aethelfleda · 15/04/2012 16:47

You might get away with it Kate if you were in the open air: wait and see and if she gets snuffly in 2-3 weeks keep away from pregnant/immunosuppressed friends for a few days just until you know either way for sure...

2-4 is a good-ish time to "get" it as then they are immune before school age and it won't bollox up their exams when they are older (it's more severe in adults). .

MissRee · 15/04/2012 17:25

Is anyone else's LO totally fixated on food items? There was a pack of biscuits (clear packet) on the sofa earlier and she was staring at them for about 10 minutes! She's also fixated on anyone eating and tries to grab at food now... surely she's too young to understand/want food??? I did buy some baby porridge the other day (pound shop bargain - Cow & Gate Banana flavour!) but she's on just 3 months so far too early to be giving her solids Hmm

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 15/04/2012 17:28

MissRee Sky is starting to get fixated on what we eat. She turns 17wks on Thursday so will be giving her half a rusk or a couple of spoonfuls of baby rice before bed for a few weeks before introducing fruit & veg for daytime. Smile

mopsytop · 15/04/2012 17:35

Oooh now I want a mountain buggy swift. Looks ace! Problem is I can't try it as nowhere seems to stock it. Massive risk to buy online without testing ... Ugh I hate decisions!

Minim is 17 weeks tomo and not the slightest interest in food. She won't want to be weaned until 6 mths I suspect.

mopsytop · 15/04/2012 17:44

Oh and aethel, I quite agree about overpriced buggies. I really liked the iCandy Peach but over six hundred quid? Like, really? And the bugaboos, which I didn't even like, were around eight hundred. Madness!!

aethelfleda · 15/04/2012 18:11

misree, with the banana porridge, before you feed it to Freya do checl on the side that it says "gluten and dairy free". If it's not then leave it in the cuPboard until she's six months. It's teed me off for years that some companies market wheat/gluten based baby mush "from 4-6 months" when gluten before 6 months is bad for little tummies and raises the risk of coeliac disease in later life. (it may be rice based porridge but a lot of the oat ones have gluten in them as a contaminent due to the processing). Just sayin'....

LittleMissFlustered · 15/04/2012 18:35

aethel I love the height of the stokke, but detest pretty much everything else about it >_< I need suspension and adjustable handlebar as I've dodgy wrists. I've got a zezu as it does birth to three for £200. It doesn't fold small, but I don't have a car so it wasn't ever going to be an issue. It wasn't my first choice pram, but it was a reasonable compromise:)

MissRee · 15/04/2012 18:37

Thanks Aethel, it definitely says gluten free but will check on the dairy as well Grin

AWomanCalledHorse · 15/04/2012 18:42

MissRee, our DS is 17wks, he's amazed by food, everything I eat I make a big show of 'om nom nom' and he likes to chew his fist along with me as I eat...we're going to wean him either this week or next week as he's waking more at night/wants feeding more often. Dh wants to wait a litter longer, I've been wanting to since last week.
I was weaned at 10wks & I've got no food intolerances/allergies or digestive issues.

mopsy. my maclaren xt can cope with a walk in the woods (and keeping DS asleep during the walk) and it's easy to clean dog shit off the tyres. I can't get excited about pushchairs..so I did just pick the easiest thing for getting up/down stairs & in our boot.
We bought our carseat online and it came in a box with no packaging Hmm

OiMissus · 15/04/2012 18:56

Oi you Stokke-bashers! Leave us alone. It is stylish and gorgeous. It is pretty rubbish over rough terrain, I agree, but amazingly smooth and easy to manoeuvre on the street. I love him being up at a height where he can see everything that's going on. At the wedding he joined us, sat up, at the table, and was really happy. We love it. So there. Wink
I've got a really sleepy BOi here today. And he's feeding every 2 hours.
Week 18, growth spurt #18.

seven How long does it take you to get to Norwich? There's a start rite outlet store on the outskirts which is fab. They still measure the feet but the shoes are half the price.

LittleMissFlustered · 15/04/2012 19:15

Oi my main issue with the stokke is the fact that in parent facing mode there's a ruddy great stick going through the carrycot. My babies have all been wriggly shuffly side-sleeping types, the stokke wouldn't have cut it for them:)

KateM77 · 15/04/2012 19:17

jiggle the pelvic floor was fine with running. I haven?t suffered from any incontinence so far thankfully, but have to work really hard on my exercises to correct the prolapse and prevent any incontinence in the future

Air and kitty sorry to hear you?ve had crap days. Hope things have improved for you both

Well done on the run neverenough. It really bloody hurts when you first start again doesn?t it?

aethel thanks again for the advice earlier. Oh, and I know what you mean about those weird Stokke buggies!

MissRee yes, DS is fascinated too. He?s 17 weeks now, but I?ll hold off on weaning for a bit yet I think, because he hasn?t regressed at night yet. I plan to do the same as I did for DD and introduce bottles and formula for a couple of weeks prior to introducing solids, rather than lots of new things all at once. I started at 5 months with her, but she was smaller than DS is. I?m going to stock up on bottles, formula, baby rice, weaning spoons and little pots for purees this week so I?ll be ready to swing into weaning action as and when required!

GeeandTee · 15/04/2012 19:30

I got very excited about weaning DS but it wore off prettry quickly as he was such a messy eater and it totally threw all the milk feeds out of routine. I found it a right pain so will be waiting until 6 months for DD! I would like her to be able to sit up properly first as well.

Had a lovely weekend, not done anything special but both DCs have behaved well and managed a few daytime naps which alwasys helps. Have also eaten quite a lot of ice-cream and chocolate so that could have helped me mood too!

I would like to get into exercise but just can't fimd the time. DD doesn't sleep more than 45mins at a time and in that time I need to get housework/paperwork done, eat, get dinner etc. Think I need to get out for some more walks with DD. She hates the pram so have to use the sling which I guess will help with weight loss!

I'm with whoever it was said earlier that they have only 5lbs to lose apathy. I have 4lbs to lose to get to pre-DD weight but 9lbs to lose to get to pre-DS weight! But in the face of tiredness/yummy food I just can't help myself eating too much unhealthy stuff. I reckon I could lose it pretty easily if I cut out junk but sometimes it feels like the only thing getting me through the day!

Kitty5824 · 15/04/2012 19:51

I've calmed down now. Sorry about earlier rant. Blush

DH has arrived. We have not yet unpacked the car, but have had a lovely roast (beef, yorkshire puds, horseradish. yum!) and a glass of wine.

I'm 3lb lighter than I was at my booking in appointment. But I actually have about 5 stone to lose to be anywhere near a weight I'd be happy with. She says unwra;pping her Lindt easter egg......

YBR · 15/04/2012 20:24

air you can defo buy thrush treatment for you from the chemist but don't you get free prescriptions? Via the Dr might be cheaper. no idea about the LO though.

YBR · 15/04/2012 20:31

Sorry, MN seems to have taken hours to actually post that for me Confused

LittleMissFlustered · 15/04/2012 20:33

Kitty I need to lose at least five stone too, minimum >_< :( I've never been bothered with body shape, but my health is what's starting to concern me. I need to find a way to suppress my appetite:/

AnAirOfHope · 15/04/2012 20:33

i asked the chemist when waiting 2 hours to see the dr. The chemist said no i had to see the dr.

I feel fobed off and that they have no idea about bf mothers. The Dr. couldnt find lanolin on the computer or the drug book. I had to tell him that i had it at home. He didnt even take a good look in lo mouth just said that my nipple looked abit sore.

i still hurt parasitomol just dont touch it and he would not give ne codine/cocordimal (sp?)

Rashkakeller · 15/04/2012 20:39

Baby onna stick....teehee

Ds is very grumpy at the moment, I think it's teething and maybe a virus as well because dd has a similar rash to him but he has very red cheeks as well. So teetha granules are the dogs? Must investigate because he isn't a fan of Calpol yet. Must also get baby ibuprofen too...so unprepared! Would you ladies say red cheeks, chewing his fists, horrible poos and being a grump would be teething?! Dd didn't suffer at all with hers so totally new to me.

We're still trying the baby rice once or twice a day because he's def interested in food and has sleep regressed but he hasn't lost his thrusting his tongue out reflex yet so it's messy and hard work. Hope he gets the hang of it soon.

Glad your day improved, Kitty! Our cat is brilliant re toileting but occasionally yaks up, usually on our bedroom carpet during the night...grim!

The wedding sounded fab, Oi, glad babyOi was good for and sounds like he stole the show :) I love taking dd to weddings and my sis gets married next year so can enjoy it with both dcs.

Talking of weddings, I can't be fatter for my sis' big day so do you mind if I add those on myfitnesspal to mine? I'm not doing the diary yet but tracking my weightless so could do with a further incentive to stay on the straight and narrow (or curvy and slim?!). I did do the diary before falling pregnant and found it great.

Hope everyones LOs allow a great nights sleep
