Thought I'd steal the honours of setting up a new thread

think mp is referring to the hv of someone earlier in this thread saying that babies need 'tummy time' from 12 weeks on - am i right?

morningpaper · 07/02/2006 22:00

yes!

Redtartanlass · 07/02/2006 22:03

One minute talking about bumbles, next thing I know MP's arse and tummy!!!!

I've been away from this thread too longf!!!

JustBonnie · 08/02/2006 08:16

ruby really not keen on her bumbo. Her legs are so chunky she was sort of wedged in it. Started to cry every time I put her in it. I sold it on ebay (which is where I got it from anyway!) She still loves her bouncer though.

I tried tummy time and she hates that too. She'll roll over when she's ready.

Think I'm convinced on the sterilising issue. I was when I read the thread it's just the reaction from other people!

Elf1981 · 08/02/2006 08:42

Evie now quite likes tummy time. I think she likes seeing the world from a different point of view. Plus it helps when she's in the bath and we put her on her tummy and we can wash her back and hair
She gets bored on her back, she often cries if she's been lying down, but picking her up and sitting her on my knee will keep her quiet because she can see so much more.
My HV said that it was just to strenghten her neck and back not to help her crawl, though she does like to "swim" when she's on her tummy!

Johnny's in sleepsuits all day too despite having huge bags of clothes which were passed on from SIL. He has been trying to roll for weeks now but still no joy.

The poor mite seems to be teething. He has red cheeks, is dribbling and chewing his hands and also has his first bout of nappy rash which I read is more common during teething. He doesn't want to be put down at all. I'm still in my jammies! I'm usually showered and getting on with the housework by this time!

We have had great success the controlled crying that we started a couple of weeks ago. He now passes out as soon as he is put in his cot at 7pm and sleeps right through until 6.30am or 7.30am. On the odd nights where he has woken up in the middle of the night, we have done the 5 mins pick up/put down thing - after making sure of course that he is not actually hungry.

I must admit to being a bit lax with the sterilising too. I have lost the wee tongs that came with the steriliser, so I have to touch the teats etc with my (clean) hands which seems to defeat the purpose. I'm still exclusively b/f so it's not something that I have to do unless I am planning to express which is not that often as I am a lazy mummy. If DH gives Johnny a bottle of EBM before bed then it means I have to tidy up the dinner dishes instead of sititng down and feeding Johnny.

Elf1981 · 08/02/2006 08:57

mawbroon - I'm a lazy mummy too. I'm trying to express and build up a supply for when Evie goes to nursery, hoping that she'll have 10 - 15oz EBM to go to nursery with each day, the rest may be formula if needed (she tends to feed early and then after five so I will have to do a day of bottles to see how much she needs during the day). I prefer to sit and feed Evie while DH cooks tea / washed the pots rather than him feeding EBM and me getting on with the work!

As for clothes, I dress Evie everyday. She has soooo many clothes, and we have a stash of 6-9 £2.50 tops and two pairs of joggers for a £5 type clothes for when she goes to nursery in case they get ruined.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh - 6 weeks and i'm back at work!!! Have decided to go down the nanny route as nursery is now too expensive with 2 babies and I went off the childminder route after lurking for a couple of months on the childminding threads.(How to become the most hated mumsnetter in 1 easy move).
So she is going to do 3 daysaweek 8.30-4.30 and dpand I will have 1 day each aweek working from home.
bloody spacebar

Redtartanlass · 08/02/2006 10:01

OMG OMG OMG SCARLETT'S GOT A TOOTH!!!! JUST SPOTTED IT!!!!OMG OMG DS2 wasabout 7 months when his came through.

She is such a wee angle, nomoaning at all!!!!

Elf1981 · 08/02/2006 10:18

RTL- what a little angel you have!!

I'm back at work in just under six weeks.
Evie will be at nursery (only child so cost isn't too bad). She'll be going from 7:30 til 4:15 and I'll bring her home by 4:30 and spend the next two and a half hours cuddling, feeding, playing and squishing her to try to ease my guilt.
Unless I win the lottery, of course!!

JustBonnie · 08/02/2006 11:10

Congratulations RTL Think your little cutie has won the first tooth award on this thread! Ruby's the opposite, lots of moaning but no teeth

Sorry for everyone who has to return to work but I'm sure your babies will be absolutely fine in their nurseries. Just think the time you do spend with them will really be quality time and that's what's important. Good luck xx

mawbroon · 08/02/2006 12:48

What a wee darling not making a fuss RTL. I've just been to the chemist to get something for Johnny as he is miserable. The woman said that Ashton & Parson Infant Powders were very popular. Just as she picked it up, this other woman said "oh no, is that the last packet". Turned out that it was and she said that she was desperate and couldn't wait until tomorrow when they would be getting more in. I offered to split the cost and the packet with her which she agreed to. Two happy Mummys for the price of one Also, if the powders are shite then I've only wasted half the price

mummygow · 08/02/2006 12:49

Well done Scarlett!!!

Yeh dont worry you lot going back to work - somedays I wish it was me who went out to work because it seems in my house with Jess that - DADDY'S THE BEST
so, the way I see it, the less time you spend with them the more they appreciate you (do I sound slightly of daddy

Still doing the tummy time dont know if its getting any better, will let you know later. I loved it when Jess could crawl, it meant she could just follow me instead of having to go and sit and play with her in one spot.

Looked at bumbo's on e-bay but will go back on again tonight to see if I can get one at a bargain price.

mummygow · 08/02/2006 12:50

mb - ashton and parson are great!!

morningpaper · 08/02/2006 16:55

mummygow funny you should say that daddy is most popular because today my 3 year old told me that she wished daddy was at home and I was eaten by a crocodile. I think she found today a little boring...

Jockey · 08/02/2006 17:07

It can be a horrible feeling returning to work. But I must admit to feeling a little of dh sometimes - if only it were me walking out that door in the morning and leaving everything behind! But now I'm due back I don't want to go! I only left Sophie for a short while today and she was screaming when I got back (apparently she'd only just started though). Most unlike her, but she does have chickenpox and has been completely wonderful about it. I missed her so much - such a wimp about leaving her for goodness sake!!! Decided I shan't be going anywhere until she's 100%. She needs her boobie too much (and I need her to empty it!).

A tooth on the thread already! Well done mini RTL.

mummygow · 08/02/2006 20:06

mp Jess asks me from the minute daddy walks out the house when will he be home - I'm seriously starting to get a complex

trice · 08/02/2006 20:47

at the crocodile mp. ds has been asking me all day if I will grow him some more siblings. He would like twins this time apparantly .

Redtartanlass · 08/02/2006 21:19

Today I woudl haveliked ds2 tobe eaten by a crocodile

ponto · 08/02/2006 22:54

Trice, my dd1 has asked for twins too!

I love Alice's Bumbo, a friend has leant it to me and it means she can watch me in the shower while sitting in it on the toilet. So I get a long shower without having to jump out every 2 minutes to wind her cot mobile.

Tummy time is quite popular with her too, I mainly use it in order to clean the folds under her double chin - she was smelling very cheesy! But by putting her on a changing mat on the table she lifts her head up to let me wipe all the gunk out and put some cream on.

Nights have been a nightmare since the weekend, she's gone from waking once at 4 am to waking every 3 hours from 7pm. Plus I've got a cold, so am exhausted. Sorry to hear about others having a hard time, but at least it makes me feel that it isn't something I'm doing wrong.

JustBonnie · 09/02/2006 07:10

sympathies ponto. You just think you've cracked it and the nights get better but then they go back to worse than before.

I heard on a program I was watching yesterday that if you suffered with bad morning sickness in the first three months your baby is more likely to be a hungry baby and be bigger. This is (apparantly) because the part of the brain that controls appetite is being developed during the first trimester and if the baby is not getting much food (if you keep being sick) it triggers a need for food when the babies born. This certainly seems to be the case with mine as I had no morning sickness with dd1 and she's always been average weight whereas I had terrible sickness with Ruby and she's a really hungry baby and really big. They both weighed the same at birth.

Does this make sense to anyone else or do you think it is just a load of b**cks???

mummygow · 09/02/2006 07:27

Camerons decided to start wakening at 5am again although not hungry and he doesnt sleep too much in the daytime, is also not in any discomfort or pain - what is he doing - apart from trying my patience

Redtartanlass · 09/02/2006 07:29

jutbonnie - ds2 was mega hungry baby, and dd is a wee petit thing, but I wasn't sick with either of them

However I don't know if you remember from previouis threads, but I had the most awful heartburn with both, and they had masses of hair!!!

ds2 iswaking up about 4 times a night and wee baby is still a wee angel. I've now told the world about her tooth. No idea why I'm soooo excited about it. Don't remember feeling this excited with bot ds.Maybe 'cos it's so early.

nervousmum · 09/02/2006 09:54

I swear babies are alien beings sent to test us to the absolute limit!

Joey has slept through for the last week, lulling us into a false sense of security (and lovely sleep...)then last night he refused to settle despite everything. We were up at 11pm, 2am, 3am, 5.30am, and finally at 7am i gave in and got up! The 'little angel' is currently fast asleep on the sofa (with a decidedly smug grin on his face, or is it my lack-of-sleep addled mind playing tricks on me?!?), while i get to sit round like a zombie all day waiting for the man to come and fix our boiler! Ahh, the joys of parenting!

trice · 09/02/2006 10:02

It is all about managing your expectations, if you expect them to sleep and they don't you feel dreadful. If you expect them to wake and they don't you feel like you have won the lottery.

Dd is on the breast so I feed four hourly. I don't make any sense in conversation these days.
