My goodness I've been away a while!!

Thanks aethel and Honey for keeping everyone posted - I am alive and almost completely well now so getting back into the swing of things! And hoping to meet up with both of you Smile

The short story of my disappearance is that after the appendix bursting in mid-Jan I got a post-op infection so it was straight to A&E, admission again to hospital, reopening the incision, then another two weeks of antibiotics and total exhaustion, then a series of ailments one after another (stomach bug, cold, another stomach bug etc etc) which were diagnosed finally as being unrelated - my immune system was just so zonked by the weeks and weeks of antibiotics and not enough rest that I was getting every bug going round. I also had a few days in London at the Cromwell Hospital having a second round of tests privately just to make sure everything was ok. But with lots of rest, quite a few days where I just stayed in bed, fed Pirran and read my way through all 20 or so of the Patrick O'Brien novels, I'm on the mend and ready to rejoin MN the world.

Luckily Pirran is happy and healthy, and enormous - he was 14lbs at 7 weeks, and MIL said she weighed him this morning and he had put on another pound or so since then Confused I feel really proud that we've kept up breastfeeding, even though Pirran had to have formula each time I was in the hospital because the medication I was on was no good for him - he took straight to the breast again each time I came home which has been heartening and enormously encouraging.

And quick tip - if you ever have an admission to hospital for a non-maternity reason, request a breast pump. They will freak out slightly and give you a private room, thinking you need privacy and quiet to express milk, not realising that you will happily breastfeed in Starbucks and have no modesty left!! I couldn't figure out why I was lucky enough to keep getting private rooms until one of the nurses mentioned it!

After a day at the US Embassy in London getting Pirran his US citizenship on Monday we drove down to Cornwall, staying with my MIL for half term - she gets a week of cuddles and laughs from grandson as my mother has had a good six weeks of him and has returned to the States for a rest for 10 days. And now we are about to eat dinner so I shall away - but I will now be returning regularly!

Much love to you all and thanks for the encouragement and pompoms everyone - I will now catch myself up on everyone's news and views. It's good to be back!! Smile

seven, I just checked the NCT website and there's an East Suffolk nearly new sale there in a few weeks: they often sell wraps in those
(I got a hug a bub wrap there for £5 !) so worth a try for that as well as for toys?

From website:

Good to see you back Tyel and glad you're on the mend Grin

Took Freya to clinic today - the chubba is now 9lb8oz Grin

OiMissus · 14/02/2012 20:53

honey- ET!!?
figgy - good weight gain!
tyel - hurrah! You're back! So sorry to hear you've had such a rough time. I hope your immune system is strong again, it certainly sounds like you've had enough misfortune. Well done for continuing to breastfeed, and getting good weight gain.
benny hope your cold is better soon. Have you heard from Carla about potentially meeting up tomorrow? I haven't. Hope you fit for meet ups. I've kept Friday free for the Trafford Centre.
hawthers so glad your LO is smiling to keep you smiling, and happy that you have proof that he isn't starving! Grin
I can't remember what else I wanted to say...
We've had a good day. LO is snotty and grumbly, but not too bad. He's been awake most of today, even whilst out in the pram dog-walking and shopping. I bought him lots of 3-6month clothes - some are too big, some fit nicely with a little room to spare. He's fighting tiredness now and needs a lot of soothing. -no romantic dinner here, we took it in turns to eat and soothe.
I hope he'll go down soon so we can start on the wine and chocolates! mopsy I'm failing on the alcohol abstinence.

EasilyBored · 14/02/2012 21:01

Wow tyel, you sound like you've had a rough start to the year! Good to hear you're feeling better!

Air, sorry about the jeckyl and hyde baby! Hope she turns back!

My inlaws are visiting tomorrow, meant to be arriving in the afternoon so I made plans to go for a walk with the women from the baby group, now they're arriving at 12 and are having a fit that the baby will be out. They're babysitting so we can go out, so its not like they're going to be deprived of cuddles.

Why does my lovely baby turn into a beast at 7pm? Every flippin night? He sleeps like a gem in his pram or on the floor at baby group, at home? Won't sleep without being held. Gah!

EasilyBored · 14/02/2012 21:04

oi - don't want to barge in, but am actually in Trafford for a meeting at work in Friday, so if you go to traf centre (and don't mind me joining you) let me know?

LittleMissFlustered · 14/02/2012 21:06

Good to see you about:)

Am off to bed, quite knackered after a few nights of being a milk machine. Have been close to caving and giving a formula dream feed recently, but I'm soldiering on as I know my reaction to it will not be easy to deal with. I wish I knew how to bitchslap my demons.

OiMissus · 14/02/2012 21:33

easily I will keep you informed. You are very welcome to join us. The more the merrier! Anyone else in the NorthWest? Grin
lmf good luck bitchslapping those demons. Grin
Hotel Chocolat - oh my bob!!! Never have chocolates been so delicious! GrinGrinGrin

bennybenbear · 14/02/2012 21:36

To those in the north west I just sent a private message with details. Anyone who didn't get it and would like to meet Friday at the Trafford centre message me. OI not heard from Carla, will text her in the morning and let you know.

LittleMissFlustered · 14/02/2012 21:41

There needs to be a Yorkshire meet. Or, more precisely, an in my local coffee shop meet. That'd just be me then. Tomorrow it is! any excuse for coffee

mopsytop · 14/02/2012 21:50

Love Hotel chocolat Oi! yum yum yum! I thought about breaking the alcohol ban for vally day as I walked past the supermarket -was tempted to go in for a bottle of bubbles- but I managed to resist! Would love a cheeky glass right now though, baby has been crying since 6. They trick you into thinking they've a routine going, then bam! It's gone!

Welcome back Tyel yay!! Sorry to hear all of the crap you went through with complications but glad you are mending okay.

Sorry to not reply to everyone but need to go to bed now. She's been asleep for five minutes, better take advantage quick while it lasts ...

Coolhand · 14/02/2012 22:36

Wow you really have been through the wars Tyel - I'm glad you're on the mend and Pirran is doing so well.

Hawthers so glad the smiles have arrived!

We had immunisations today - he was a total star, cried when they went in and stopped the second I held him again. Having said that, DH then pointed out if that's all he cried at the injections, just think how much his reflux must have been hurting him (we had weeks and weeks of high pitched screaming that went on every waking minute - thankfully the HV and my doctor and the paediatrician were brilliant and after trying many things, the reflux is now managed and I have a completely different baby). He's been fine so far tonight but we'll see!

Hope everyone has a good night and gets some sleep!

aethelfleda · 14/02/2012 22:47

Dh home, sushi noshed, DS changed and fed again, and he's finally zonked. Run for the hills Time for bed!

(Easily, you're describing the well known phenomenon of "evening grumps", a kind of low key varient of colic. Baby's not a screaming wreck, but for several weeks is generally clingy, grumpy and needs altenate carrying and feeding from about 5pm-10pm each night. It all goes away at 3-4 months and one theory is that it's due to the developing gut lining being uncomfortable in the evenings trying to process all the intake from the day. But (QI moment here) Nobody Knows!

luckysevens · 14/02/2012 23:13

tyel glad to have you back. Sounds like you've had a pretty tough time.

aethel thanks, I'm watching one on eBay but I'll bear it in mind if not.

Figgygal · 15/02/2012 00:05

Been trying to put him to bed for 2 hours now he never doesn't go down to bed very frustrated!

Another Welcome back tyel Smile

bennybenbear · 15/02/2012 00:21

'k, I've had a brew and a bath and feel somewhat more human. Got to wait in for the health visitor today. Not amused, as have already had a visit from the fill-in one, and I'm not particularly interested in being snooped at by my named one. Gah!
