LMF I thought you were perhaps keeping the name secret as perhaps you didn't wanted to be outed (as an MNer in RL by someone you know may just click on this thread) or some such...
Do they think Edward has an umbilical hernia? DD1 has this and it gives her no end of joy squishing it back in (gives me the hibyjeebys as you can feel it 'pop' back in).

DD always sleeps in her sling so I'm also now restricting its use in the day seven. She isn't really awake very much out of the day anyway, I seem to have a very sleepy baby. There couldn't be anything wrong with her could there? When she is awake she is wide eyed and alert. She also doesn't "chatter" much, she makes lots of squeaky grunting noises when she's asleep but no noise when she's awake. Again there's no problem with that is there? I should know second time around but having a worry about everything day today!

Although just met DH for a pizza lunch as he's working near home today and now sitting in the restaurant with a paper, hot chocolate and feeding DD. I always feel better out and about than on the sofa in front of the TV!

mopsytop · 20/01/2012 14:22

Mine is the exact same Mmm, so if there is sth wrong with yours, then there is with mine!

sevenswansaswimming · 20/01/2012 14:33

Eva is the same, she's having an exceptionally sleepy day today. She had a feed at 7 and stayed awake until 9, but has been asleep since other than having a very sleepy feed at 11.30.

Kri5ty · 20/01/2012 14:54

hmm i am very jealous of everyones talking/ smiling babies
Saul doesn't get a chance to talk, he just crys/ screams as soon as he is awake!!

what slings are good i may try that

LittleMissFlustered · 20/01/2012 14:59

Look for a local sling meet. I'm going to one next week to try some out as I'd like one for the school journey but have no idea where to start >_

Kri5ty · 20/01/2012 15:10

wow i have never heard of one!! I'm off to google!

hawthers · 20/01/2012 15:13

I've bought an ergo sling which was recommended to me. So far it's been impressive and easy to get ds in and out of. He does tend to fall asleep in it but it's got this insert which you can then put the nipper down in and so far he's stayed asleep. We got it half rrp on eBay.

NorthernChinchilla · 20/01/2012 15:32

I really like my moby sling kri5ty, as recommended and used by several on here. Bar the car seat/pram when actually being used, it's the only place my LO will sleep during the day, and it allows me to post on MN do housework.

I think this group/thread has been so useful in demonstrating how, even at a few weeks old, all our babies are so different already. It's brilliant in many other ways, but I find it fascinating how individual they all are, and how none are 'textbook' (but all completely wonderful, obviously!)

I have a silent baby too mmmm- it startles me when he makes any noise when awake (other than crying), and I can't wait for him to start with the chatter. He does sometimes giggle in his sleep, and I wish he'd do it at other points!

Right, he's woken up- he goes from asleep to awake and yelling for food in seconds- and so must dash!

aethelfleda · 20/01/2012 16:08

Arg, someone pass me a haddock for the midwife...

DS is, in the grand scheme of things, FINE. He wees, he poos, he settles adter feeds (which are demand feeds), he cluster freds, I get a four hour break most nights from 10pm-2am ish. He's not had jaindice, his nails have grown, he's got short periods of alertness. BUT he's still not back to his 8lb 10 birthweight...
Since being weighed 4 days ago (on diff scales) he's put 60g on ie two ounces. So not a showstopper but he is gaining.

Midwives response: "give him formula".
Me "Do I really need to?

NorthernChinchilla · 20/01/2012 16:59

< passes large, particularly smelly haddock >

You know, aethel, that your DS is fine- more than that, as you list, he's progressing well. He is feeding, pooing, weeing, sleeping and entirely content for a three week old baby. He's just not larding it on- big deal, it's not like he's lost 3lbs or he's in any way distressed.

You've been great advising us, and it's crap that this woman should knock your confidence. It's absolutely unwarranted and unnecessary.

Bugger to expressing, and bugger to giving him formula if you don't want to.

They should take a holistic view of the baby and the situation at home- as you rightly say, there are two other children to think of!- and just give encouragement and be happy with what you're doing and how he's progressing. I hope you feel happy and confident enough- and with the support of your OH I'm sure- to ignore this woman's (and I hesitate to use the word) 'advice'.

msbuggywinkle · 20/01/2012 17:09

aethel aside from anything else, that amount of weight gain is fine for the period of time, you can't predict was he is going to do in the next three days, he might gain 4oz. You know that he is fine, you have experience and knowledge to back your feeling up.

Anyway, I have just averted a crisis by managing to get DD1 to blow the sweet out of her nose seconds before I was carting the lot of them off to the walk in centre...she feels very silly and sorry for herself. I am beyond happy that I don't have to expose us all to whatever lurgies are lurking in the waiting room!

LittleMissFlustered · 20/01/2012 17:13

I has found that certain midwives just don't like breast milk. Same with some health visitors. Nothing that can be said or illustrated will ver convince them otherwise. I had such a midwife in hospital, and they do make you feel two inches tall. Hold your ground aethel as you know you're both doing well.

I love te idea of fore and hind milk being the same. Has she never actually seen the difference? I'd have been tempted to flap a boob out and demonstrate the difference :o

mopsytop · 20/01/2012 17:23

Ugh aethel, not what you need! How much weight did she expect him to gain in 4 days? I hope you have the confidence to continue ad you have been. You know your baby best after all. When mine wasn't getting enough from the breast she would never settle and spent a lot of time crying. Yours sounds totally content! Go with your gut, it will be right I'm sure! Sorry your confidence has been knocked :( all the different advice from different people. It's all very difficult.

aethelfleda · 20/01/2012 17:43

Aw, thanks guys, I really appreciate the support. If I thought that he needed supplementing I'd give formula like a shot: what annoyed me was the pushiness to treat the figures with calories for the sale of it and she was ignoring everything I said about whether he was well, and fixating on the scales.

I had all my expressing stuff on standby anyway, so when I got home I sterilised my hand pump: after feeding DS for 10 mins on left boob He fell asleep with the "full!" sign in both eyes. A quick pump got me 1/2 oz of creamy looking hindmilk but not a lot else, so I think he's emptying the boob PK. Took a bit off the right one to make it up to 2oz and it's in the fridge (might get DH to give it over the weekend) but I think I'm probably just going to wave my boobs at DS at every opportunity over the weekend and try to chill out about it. He's lovely and it just makes me cross that there are MWs out there stressing us about well babies. I'm sure they mean well, but...

Anyway, onward and upwards! New car getting picked up tomorrow! Bye bye savings and hello (gulp) MPV! At least it's only a 1.8 engine so won't burn too many dead dinosaurs...

LittleMissFlustered · 20/01/2012 18:12

Your son will love the travelling by dinosaur analogy when he's old enough to appreciate itWink If your girls are anything like my girl, they'll like it too:o

NorthernChinchilla · 20/01/2012 18:15

< climbs up through mountain of used tissues >

Well, sod me if LO hasn't just slept in his sling today, but after a feed and being settled (and using dummy) been put down and slept for an hour and a half in his moses- and is still there! This is the second time I've made a comment about him refusing to sleep in the moses, and the second time he's actually done so.

Must remember to post about never winning the lottery...

Now as long as he doesn't actually wake himself with the magnificently loud farts he's doing, all's good. I just hope that this won't stop him sleeping tonight- we've got to travel a fair way to go and visit OH's eldest sister and her, um, somewhat trying? children tomorrow, deepest joy.

Glad you're feeling OK aethel, and rightly so.

OiMissus · 20/01/2012 20:14

Oh am I too late to add another haddock in for the MW aethel?
and I'll add to it some virtual sumptuous Belgian choccies and champagne for the girls on this thread for their v wise and supportive responses!
I am celebrating today, I have been liberated from maternity pads! Hurrah!
And to celebrate I am going to have me some sex. I am. Grin
But first, I'm gonna have me some Tesco's finest ruby red Malbec. Chin chin!
Have a lovely weekend! X

Kri5ty · 20/01/2012 20:22

enjoy oi!! more like oo err missus!! I am jealous, but my delivery lef my pelvic floor in such a mess it is still going to be a while for that :( and as the time goes on, the more paranoid / nervous i am about it! its like being a teenager all over again!!

Kri5ty · 20/01/2012 20:24

Ps she deserves more than a haddock aethel!!

Kri5ty · 20/01/2012 20:25

pps (i realllly need to stop hitting enter! Dam phone keypad!)

hurrah msb!! out of interest what type of sweet was it?? and was she tempted to eat it hehe :o

LittleMissFlustered · 20/01/2012 20:29

Oi does Mr Oi know he's in danger?Wink:o

sevenswansaswimming · 20/01/2012 21:15

aethel does that mean she hasn't signed you over to the HV? She sounds bonkers, he's gained weight so you're obviously doing something right.

Hope you're enjoying your sex oi :o

aethelfleda · 20/01/2012 21:48

Yep, seven, I'm still under the madwives (I think until DS is back to birthweight as a minimum).

DS continues to be fine. I spoke with a lovely friend of mine who's an NcT breastfeeding counsellor, she reckons the thing that may be making the difference is DS's tongue-tie: while he's clearly happy, it could be making his feeding less efficient so that he just gets tired before he's had quite enough calories. She also suggested something called jack Newman's Breast Compression (he's a canadian paediatrician) which has online videos of babies drinking versus nibbling on boobs, so I'm going to check those out, stuff DS as full of milk as I can. If he's not gaining more by the next weigh in I will ask the other MW who's coming to do a home visit (!!!) Monday if she can refer us to the tongue-tie clinic. (if that is the problem then snipping it will lead to an improvement in the weight thing).

Wow, oi, you go for it!!

lmf, my two DDs are total tomboys already. Toy of today was a
Pirate flag tied to a cardboard tube. Cue two hours of them rushing around the house yelling "Har-harrrrrr!!!" at each other :)

Figgygal · 20/01/2012 21:57

I bought mother and baby magazine today because there's an article about post baby sex didn't learn anything new I must say. I am also terrified by the idea of recommencing "relations" after stitches and a graze but it's definitely on my mind now we 4 wks down the line. Romantic I know but i pretty much want to get the first time over with now.
