Hi All, I thought I'd start a new 2006 thread for the October 2004 Mummies and Babies.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Maisiemog - I haven't done a birth plan - yet - supposed to be doing one today - FWIW!

I've got an open mind and just to see how things go - but think I should write at least what I don't want especially after reading the "bf myths heard in hosp thread"

Hopefully, the birth will be quicker and easier - in hindsight I went in too early last time - I now know how bad the pain needs to be irrespective of how far apart my contractions are!

Wish me some labour vibes - hoped I would be early as dd1 was 9 days late - what will be will be I suppose!

biglips · 25/01/2006 09:28

my birth plan was "go with the flow" meaning offer me anything

hotmama · 25/01/2006 09:36

Biglips LOL!

Last time mine was as little interventions as possible, will be using a TENs machine and would like to have a water birth. After tooing and frooing to the hosp for 3 days - when they eventually kept me in I had Tens, Gas & Air, diamorphine, epidural. epistomy, forceps and a 4 pint blood loss! So going with the flow is what I'm doing this time!

Hopefully, she will pop out as I sneeze! Yeah right!

hotmama · 25/01/2006 09:38

Cazzybabs - didn't realise the names of our dd's , dd1 is Grace Isabel - great minds etc.

maisiemog · 25/01/2006 19:05

Lots of labour vibes Hotmama, I hope it all goes really well for you. I had a weird labour, because of a fibroid that actually stopped Alfie from being born (poor Alf, he must have been really fedup).
However, I was at home most of the time and that's one thing I would repeat, I definately don't want to hang around a labour ward, home's the nicest.
Has anyone got any ideas for names for their next babies????

Good luck hotmama, was holding a friends baby today thinking that when I had ds2 dd was the age he is now (hope that makes sense). Can't really imagine having a newborn now but I did it and so will you! If its any help I have BF each of my babies longer than the last. I think your plan sounds good, my experience says that second and subsequent babies are so much more laid back than firsts because we ignore them

maisiemog · 25/01/2006 21:58

Hotmama, I meant to say, what happened the last time you bf'd?

OP posts:
hotmama · 25/01/2006 22:08

I bf dd for 10 weeks - mainly bf but started to introdue formula on the advice of my HV!

Dd was a very sleepy baby - good in some ways but not for feeding. Also, because I lost loads of blood this apparently effected my milk supply. Also, had flat nipples so had to use nipple shields.

DD took ages to regain birthweight (she was 8.10 at birth but 7.9 by the time we left hosp after 6 days (I was kept in because they weren't sure whether or not to give me a blood transfusion - that I didn't want - and didn't have)

Then dd started to lose weight so this is the reason I stopped bf and moved to formula - still have issues with this - but want to concentrate on doing the best for dd2.

Basically, had crap advice from hvs - was advised that I as long as I was feeding 5-6 times a day that would be enough. Now realise should have been more like 8-12 times for a newborn! Hence dd losing weight and my milk supply reducing.

However, I have got gemmed up and attended La Leche bf seminars - so feel positive this time. [crossed fingers icon]

hotmama - my birth plan with moley was basically to be offered every possible pain relief known to man - ended up having moley at home on the bathroom floor with none whatsoever! Hope all goes well.

Moley is sleeping a lot better, ended up giving him medised for whatever was troubling him and it was brill!

maisiemog · 26/01/2006 19:51

It's so bad if you get a HV who doesn't support you and isn't properly informed, because you are so vulnerable. Anyone would worry about a baby losing weight, beyond what is expected (is it 10% or something?). Then to get rubbish advice like feeding 5 times a day it's just pathetic.
It sounds like you are doing all the right stuff, getting all the info, and there's so much support on Mumsnet for breastfeeding, that you don't feel as if you are the only person doing it. I ended up being the only one of my two friends breastfeeding after three months, so I was so glad to logon to Mumsnet during that time, to feel part of a group and get advice.
The main thing I will do this time that I didn't do last time, is get the baby from the midwife immediately and make sure he/she isn't dressed or put in the cot unless he/she has fed. I wish I had just kept him with me in the bed, skin to skin for hours after the birth, because I think he might have had a chance to latch on. Next time though I will have more of a clue - I was so uninformed last time and I felt embarrassed about trying to feed him, in case I did it wrong or something. Anyway it all worked out in the end.
Oh and don't forget to make sure your HV uses bf growth charts for you, not the other ones. I think a lot of the data is based on formula fed babies and includes babies that were weaned early as well.
Not long to go now.

Kath, it works like a dream doesn't it. I hope you're feeling a bit better now you have had some sleep. I think Moley sounds like a very advanced baby, so you might have a budding genius there.
I was totally up for an epidural and all that stuff, but ended up having gas and air for about ten minutes until they told me to stop because I was starting to hyperventilate. I didn't think it would work, but it was the biz.

OP posts:
KathH · 26/01/2006 19:59

Masiemog - I cant believe how it works! Just got to get him weaned off it now (only joking!)

biglips · 26/01/2006 20:01

lol!! (grin)

i was so off my head on the Gas and air as i felt so ssttoooonnnneeddddddd!!!!! lol!!!!

maisiemog · 27/01/2006 18:32

Wooohoo gas and air.
Kath are you still there??
Any contractions??

OP posts:
maisiemog · 27/01/2006 18:34

Sorry I don't know why I wrote Kath I was thinking about Moley instead of Grace. I'm a bit knackered so you'll have to bear with me. Have a tummy thing, feel queasy. Ick!
Hotmama, I probably sound a bit trivial with my upset tummy considering.

OP posts:
KathH · 27/01/2006 21:06

you frightened me to death then!

biglips · 27/01/2006 21:07

LOL!!!

maisiemog · 27/01/2006 22:27

I've discovered a new phenomenon with Alfie, called forgetting to have lunch. Is this just me? I never forget to eat normally. OK my tum's a bit dodgy at the moment, but I didn't have brek or lunch on Thursday, kind of forgot then was too busy.
I have this kind of panic to get out before all the shops close - it seems to take ages to get out of the door with Alfie. There are so many things to remember.

Hi Guys...God what a nightmare no broadband connection for a month!!! bloody internet provider having major network probs. I haven't had time to read the post but will catch up with them later. Hope everyone ok...its good to be back on line

hotmama · 28/01/2006 12:13

Still here - due tomorrow - convinced I am going to be late again! On a positive note at least that it is a delay in looking after two!

maisiemog · 28/01/2006 16:08

How are you feeling Hotmama? Eating, sleeping OK. My problem was I didn't wee for ages and it caused trouble for me, the stupid midwives didn't check, although it is a standard procedure for women in labour.
Hi Reibee, ditto, we have just got our broadband back, after weeks of sloooooooooow dialup. Guess what? We were using the wrong password, so it didn't work. Doh!

well i finally got round to buying Moley his shoes today. He loved them so much in the shop he cried when I took them off. Bought a pair of leather boot type things and some lace-ups. Bargains - both in the sale, reduced from £22 to £4. Got home, put them on later to go out. He wont walk in them. Its like he's glued to the floor. He's been walking since October - cant ruddy believe it! He stood totally still while the top half of his body wobbled about and would not move his feet at all. He wore them in his highchair to have his tea tho!

biglips · 28/01/2006 20:44

ha ha ha!!!! baba was like that too as she couldnt walk in them and was falling over but she got the hang of them now for the past week.. its so funny watching her!!! he he he

biglips · 28/01/2006 20:44

kath.. did he start walking on his birthday like mine?

ans where did you get them bargains?

biglips · 28/01/2006 20:52
