Gloomy outside here too, feel sorry for ds1 having to walk to school.

J amazed me as slept from 11-6am Shock very nice and she's asleep again. I'm up breakfasting ds's and got to take ds2 to preschool. He's watching nativity. Need to finish Xmas cards today and finish shopping.

Have good day everyone x

mpops · 07/12/2011 09:59

Hello! God, it is good to finally have a mobile version of MM because I can't go anywhere near my laptop.

Sorry I didn't respond to all your great comments to my HELP! post the other week. Read them all and it was a big comfort. We are doing better now, bit more confident - although still quite worried about everything! Been taking D to sensory groups and she seems to live it so that's lovely. Anyone else taking babies to playgroups?

Tally, for us the greatest three things helping D go to sleep like a dream at night are: warm bath, her night clothes and sleeping bag on the radiator for an hour before bed for more warmth, and a little nest in her crib made out rolled up towels that go under her sheet! She goes down around 9:30-10, sleeps through to 3 for a feed, then back to bed straight away, then up at 7am. The rest of the day is all over the place, mind, as she is still a very fussy feeder. But night-time is good!

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 07/12/2011 10:44

I have started going to playgroup in local church although its more for Christopher than mhairi. (and only managed it once so far between colds and weather)

Mhairi has started sucking her thumb!
Should I try an force a dummy do thumbs cause more tooth damage than dummies?

MamaMaiasaura · 07/12/2011 11:06

Thumb vs dummy whole debate, got me ds1 sucks thumb and tho he may need a brace they said not related to thumb sucking but just the way he is. He has narrow arch. It's great as he self soothed and can't lose thumb Wink he wouldn't take dummy either (or bottle). Ds2 had neither, and Jessica keeps sucking her fingers/hand/anything including her toy bunny lol

MamaMaiasaura · 07/12/2011 11:11

Mpops, love your idea of warming sleeping bag up and sleep suit. Will do that tonight. Trying to decide when I put her to bed at 7 rather than her staying with us till 10.30 ish (asleep on me). As we share room with ds2 too I don't want her waking him.

Nothing done today as she's fed and slept on me since dropping ds2 off. She's grinning at me now lol.

I go to bossom pals group when I can and they have play leader for older siblings. It today from 2-4 not sure if we will make if.

mpops · 07/12/2011 11:54

Aw, D won't take a dummy either so hands it is!

Do any of the babies go through days of not eating much? D is putting on weight as normal but there are days (like the last 2) when she just won't eat much. Should I be worried? The hv fobbed me off.

bilblio · 07/12/2011 12:07

DD always refused a dummy, found her thumb eventually to my relief, but then stopped sucking her thumb after a few months too. DH is a thumb sucker so I was equally relieved when she stopped sucking it, but she was a pain to get to sleep so maybe she would have been better to carry on. Confused

Seth uses a dummy, but generally only at night when he's being noisy, he grumbles with wind but the dummy keeps him quiet and he goes back to sleep. We also have it on hand in the car as he doesn't seem to like being in his car seat and cries when the car stops. I hope he doesn't become dependent on it.

Both have advantages/disadvantages. My nieces all suck their fingers or thumbs. Their teeth look okay at the moment but the dentist has warned the eldest in particular may have problems as she sucks 2 fingers with her palm up so puts more pressure on her teeth. The biggest problem I've seen is their health though. They always seem to be ill, even before they started nursery & school.

CheshireDing · 07/12/2011 12:44

Terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE sleep from P last night :(

Did not go to sleep until 1am , then woke at 4am and 6am. Such a shame as the night before was great, she just kept crying and would not settle. I did wonder if it was my fault as I had quite a few cups of tea yesterday and I also wondered whether there was enough milk for her as she seemed to feed all evening but still eat her hand she is still hand eating now

I might be strict tonight and try the sleeping bag, last night DH was worried the head hole was still too big and that as it's 2.5 to she would be too warm. I was thinking of buying a 1.5 tog too, as our house is always warm even though we do not have the radiators on in the bedrooms. What do you put underneath the sleeping bag though as I wonder will their arms/hands not get cold. I cannot imagine P wearing a vest, sleepsuit (with hands and feet) AND the sleeping bag. Too tired to think logically!

MamaMaiasaura · 07/12/2011 12:45

Mpops as long wet nappies, gaining weight etc I wouldn't worry. She may be an efficient feeder (is she bf?) as if she is can't tell how much they take.

Bilb - the crying in car and grumblings at night sound just like j Grin

MamaMaiasaura · 07/12/2011 12:48

Cheshire Sad poor you. Re sleeping bag our house is warm too. I use 0-6 months 1 tog and Jessica wears sleep suit but no vest. Arms fine but hands get cold. Doesn't bother her tho. I just put her in bed/cot ontop of fitted sheet. She slept in cot last 2 nights till wakes for feed.

PenguinArmy · 07/12/2011 13:51

chesire DS did that the night before but stayed awake at 4 (that was then DHs turn). Last night was good he went to sleep early on and woke up at 6 (late for him). He did one 3 hour stretch to 1am and then fed every 90mins, but we're always both asleep by the end of them so they don't bother me too much.

I go to at least one playgroup everyday, normally 2 Xmas Grin but it gives me a rest as DD just runs off and plays with the toys.

chesire do you know how it is there? You could just do a long sleeved vest and some socks?

emmazed · 07/12/2011 16:39

i would like to start on sleeping bags, but J is still being swaddled. he flings his arms around so much that if he fights his way out of it then he wakes up. anyone else got this? or maybe he wakes up because he is cold not because of his arms?

good to hear other peoples evening routines. i was trying to get J into a routine, but it all stopped with his cold and i am finding it hard to get him onto it. he slept badly last night, and now like groovy he has spent most of the day asleep. if he is sleepy i dont want to/can't keep him awake if he wants to sleep, so there is little i can do. i do think that he longer he is awake during the day the more he will sleep at night but not sure how to make this happen.

i give half a feed at 5, then bath him or top and tail (swap every night), then at 6ish the other half of his feed and try to get him to sleep by 7ish. i find if he sleeps straight away then it is fine, if he struggles with sleep (as he did last night as a firework woke him as he was drifting off) then he wont sleep until his next feed around 10/10.30. he has no pattern in the night. in the last week i have had him sleep until 6, but also wake at 2.30.

i am hoping that he will start to settle better in the evenings so me and dh can have an evening. yesterday was our anniversary, and every time we tried to have some time together J cried! we just about managed to bolt down our dinner without him getting hysterical.

GroovyRach · 07/12/2011 16:40

S is in a 0-6 gro bag (2.5 tog). She wears a vest, sleepsuit and I sometimes put socks on her to if it's really cold. If I decided not to leave heating on all night, I put a blanket loose over the top. Her hands are just cold to touch, but face feels warm. Not sure what temp room drops to through night, but I often wear a jumper to bed and have a thick(ish) duvet so it must be cool at least.

Took her to be weighed this morning. Up to 10lbs 1oz at almost 10 weeks!!

I got my first proper period this morning. Don't know if it's normal or what, but I'm now aching down below Sad. Same sorta discomfort as after birth! Im thinking maybe everything hasn't fully healed yet Blush

Scheherezade · 07/12/2011 17:18

Hello all! Hope some of you remember me Grin from the antenatal October baby bus. I've had a pretty mad time since LO decided to make his (4 week early) entrance, and literally only just got around to getting back on here.

I started to lose the plot a little about 2 weeks after his birth, and went to stay in the mother & baby psych ward/respite centre for 5 weeks. Am (almost) back to normal functioning, and looking forward to getting back to avoiding housework discussing on here.

Little Cyrus is not so little, we haven't weighed him in about 2 weeks, but he'll be easily between 12 and 13lbs now. I really, really, really struggled with BF and ended up with my nipples ripped to shreds, but I was so determined to do it - I was pumping every 3 hours to bottle feed EBM, and he's quite a guzzler, so I was having to aim for 6oz+ every 3 hours, and ended up feeling like a milking parlour! Anyway, pumping every 3 hours for 5 weeks paid off, nips are now back up to scratch, and we're exclusively BF, apart from one big bottle of formula before bed for dad to feed (am hoping it will become part of a bedtime routine).

Feeds are still a little all over the place, he'll go about 2-3 hours in the day, and between 4-6 at night. But as he's still only 10 weeks I'm hoping that's normal!

I have finally started cooking again, as (hospital food aside) me and DP were living off frozen everything and homecooked meals gifted to us by family members!

Scheherezade · 07/12/2011 17:20

(am guessing his weight as 3 weeks ago he was 10lbs 7oz at 7 weeks(!) and then a week later he was 11lbs 7 oz, so he had gained a whole lb in a week! He's very heavy, and my arms ache to hold him.

I, meanwhile feel cheated by the people saying how BF helps you to lose the baby weight, they didn't account for my love of chocolate continuing post-birth!

GroovyRach · 07/12/2011 17:27

Good to have you back schech!! Smile

mpops · 07/12/2011 18:03

Glad to hear you're all doing better Scheh! I'd have lost the plot too if mt parents hadn't stayed with us for the first 3 weeks. You could say I actually did lose it actually. It's tough, for sure. Sounds like Cyrus is doing great!

Engelsmeisje · 07/12/2011 18:33

welcome back schech!

PenguinArmy · 07/12/2011 18:46

emmazed I heard people swear by these

scheh glad you made it back and massive awe at getting back to bf under those circumstances, you must be superhuman

BB3 · 07/12/2011 19:49

Hey Scheh welcome to the post natal bus! I have not lost any weight through bfing, didn't with Ds and haven't with the girls either!!! Angry

Glad you got through everything ok and LO seems to be thriving no matter what the circumstances. I am considering starting formula before bed to see if it is heavier and helps them sleep a bit longer - do you find it makes a difference?

MamaMaiasaura · 07/12/2011 20:03

Oh my, J has been crying so much today Sad feel drained. Just don't know why she's so upset. She settles then starts again.

MamaMaiasaura · 07/12/2011 20:05

Sorry missed Scheherazade post. Welcome back and glad your feeling better. M&b units are fantastic places when mums need that extra support. Did they diagnose PND? Good to have you back xx

Scheherezade · 07/12/2011 20:34

BB3 - formula before bed definately makes a difference, even if he has a BF top up after 2/3 hours, once the lights are off he goes for 5-6 hours, which he doesn't do with just boobs, I suppose the formula is less easily digested/ sits heavier in the stomach, so he isn't hungry as fast.

I can't really complain for my tubbiness, today I have eaten 4 digestice biscuits, a kit kat, bacon/beans/sausages/fried bread for dinner, and chocolate cheesecake for pudding. Yes, I am THAT disgusting today. And I stayed in my PJs all day. God, it's no wonder he's gaining so much weight is it, my BM must be like chocolate milk!

Awen - Am not sure of any diagnosis, but they said I just needed the respite. That must be really tough for you with the LO, is she wrapped up warm? Are you BF? I find that always settles him as a last ditch choice, I don't want to be a dummy, but it's always a comfort. Could it be colic? Cyrus is a fan of the over the shoulder firemans lift/bouncing up and down when he has tummy pain from wind etc. Can anyone take her for you, so you can get some rest?

Our winning formula for getting cyrus settled is swaddling, dummy and the slumber bear - fantastic invention!

Scheherezade · 07/12/2011 20:38

Thanks penguin - however I'm lucky that I could concentrate 100% on baby and feeding, as I don't have any other kids, and have a very understanding DP! I'm also far too lazy for bottle feeding, I already resent having to STAND UP and WALK to the kitchen for just the one bottle a day!

(p.s. am not 50 stone really, god knows how I'm not rippling all over, I deserve to be!)

PenguinArmy · 07/12/2011 20:49

I had doughnuts for breakfast!!
