green poo happens and isn't generally a cause for concern, I'll see if I can find a good link for it later. ILs due again in 30 mins and DD isn't well so don't know what to do.

You're all making me feel guilty. 5 weeks old today and S is still a very sleepy baby. His most awake time is from about 4pm until 11pm, when he cluster feeds, but he dozes then too. He's not very good at sleeping in his carrycot, but if he's been held he's fine, so I either sit and relax/MN, or put him in the sling, and co-sleep at night if we need to.
Even if he is awake he normally falls asleep within 5 minutes of being in the sling. I keep taking him to meet friends, or to BFing groups and he sleeps through it all.

I'm sending you all some of his sleepy baby vibes.
I'm also waiting for it all to end and him to turn into a demon child. Hmm

DD on the other hand continues to be stroppy and argue the toss about everything. She's great with S.. well he sleeps through her prodding him... but I'm dreading the teenage years! Thankfully her teacher continues to rave on about how good and bright she is. It's a shame she leaves the halo at the school gates. :o

We had a few days of green poos too, it was when I was ill last weekend. I had really painful stomach cramps & a temperature. We'd gone to my parents for the night but ended up staying 2 and DD had to miss school Monday. It was actually nice being ill there and being properly looked after. Mum sent me to bed and just brought me Seth when he was hungry. When they offered to take DD home so she could go to school, but let me rest for a couple more days I was very tempted.

edward Congrats on the pre-pregnancy clothes.
I'm in my mid-weight loss clothes, but they're too big now. I've got 1 stone to lose to get back to pre-pregnancy weight, 2 stone to my ideal weight but my parkin, flapjack & biscuit diet seems to be working as I lost another 2lb last week :o.
I think there's at least 1/2 a stone in my boobs too. I finally managed to get some pretty well-fitting nursing bras in ginormous size. They make me feel & look so much better. :)

Tally When I had mastitus with DD I felt like I had flu. It all happened really quickly too. I woke with a blocked duct, got a GP appointment for early that morning, started feeling achy & shivery at the surgery. GP gave me antibiotics and ibuprofen but said I may only need to take a few antibiotics. By the time I got home I felt dreadful and DH sent me straight to bed, he kept bringing DD to be fed, and I was fine again by the evening.

Epic post, but I've not posted for a week. Going to try to get S to settle somewhere other than my chest and do something practical now... like eat more parkin. :o

A few quotes from tiktok (the MN BF guru)

Green poos, by the way, matter not a jot in a healthy, thriving baby. A baby can be gaining weight well, and have green poos. We don't need to worry about foremilk and hindmilk if the baby is fine, and foremilk is good stuff anyway

and

^You cannot be dogmatic about green poo in newborn babies, and babycentre have it wrong if they say something as prescriptive as having to keep the baby on for 30 mins.

Green poo can be normal. Green poo can reflect certain supplements the mother is taking. Green poo can sometimes be a sign the baby is not taking as creamy a feed as other babies do. In all those instances it does not matter a bit if the baby is well, thriving and growing.

It can also be a sign of a temporarily upset tum. ^ e.g. if they have cold/illness coming or already there

Also this was a good link about the whole fore/hind milk nonsense that can get brandied around

hope that helps someone. I'm going to try a nap Shock

Thanks PA that's great x

emmazed · 18/11/2011 18:51

hey, finally managed to catch up after a week off here. J is over 4 weeks now and i can't believe it!

After several weeks of feeding at least every 2 hours i now realise that a fair bit of J's crying was wanting to sleep not hunger (i am FF and should have at least 2.5 hours between feeds if not 3 hours). i feel like a bad mummy, but i am now trying to recognise his crys and try to soothe him to sleep rather than feed him if it wasn't too long since he last fed. it is harder (he always stopped crying and then fell asleep when i fed him) but i will hopefully get there. any tricks to get your baby to sleep (apart from food)?

fortunately he mostly has 3 hours between feeds in the night so i get sleeps in 2 hour chunks. to those of you up all night - big hugs and i am sure it will pass when they start to get a bit bigger

BB3 · 18/11/2011 22:47

emmazed will he sleep in pram if you go/ send others with him for long walks? Ede likes to be sung too, Ayse likes the tumble dryer Confused both like warm bath, food and bed x

bilblio · 18/11/2011 23:10

emmazed Seth likes to be fed to sleep too. Other things which work are; being in the sling, the hoover, a dummy (only one particular brand though, we had a few to try from DD,) or having the bottom of his back rubbed preferably while laying on my chest.
DD used to fall asleep if we turned on the extractor above the cooker. They like white noise.

DH has realised tonight Seth has a different cry when he has a dirty nappy. I've noticed in the last couple of days he doesn't like having a dirty nappy, but tonight DH came down because he'd heard me trying to calm Seth for a while and thought it sounded like a dirty nappy cry. DH changed him and he was happy again.
DH was better at spotting the different cries with DD too. I think it's because he can distance himself from it a little... or it might be the musician spotting the different tones.

Having a baby who doesn't like being dirty is very novel. DD was more than happy to sit in her own filth for hours. It took a lot of persuading at 3yo to get her out of nappies so she could start nursery.... but then she was dry within the week during the day, and dry at night 2 weeks later. Hmm

TallyBear · 19/11/2011 02:53

seb likes the microwave!

also trying to recognise different cries but not easy. dh can tell by smell of nappy! seb willsit in dirty but not wet nappy - odd boy!

having to settle him on my shoulder as i think he has reflux. dh sent me to bed at 8 and i got up 15 mins ago - seb not stopped crying and dh gone through almost three bottles trying to get him to sleep - trouble is i don't think seb knows difference between hunger and sore tummy. any tips?

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 19/11/2011 03:25

Well got my night out at the flicks breaking Dawn was amazing! I was away for around 3 hours in total, I fed M immediately before leaving and when I came back mum said she had drank the whole 5oz bottle and was still looking for more! Shock does she really get that much from me? She's only 3 weeks old? (although HV said last week she put on 1lb in a week so prob yes!)

tally so sorry you're having trouble with seb I've never really dealt with reflux so not sure what to suggest, have you tried raising one side of his bed? And swaddling him? My dc always sleep better when swaddled. Also speak to pharmicist re reflux perhaps there's somethin you could give him to relieve it? Sorry not much help but I know how awful it is to hear you're baby cry and not know how to help them Sad

Bumpsadaisie · 19/11/2011 08:08

Edward i think sometimes they do get a lot of milk from us - my DS has put on a pound this week too and has literally just drained one hugely engorged breast in 5 mins. Slurp slurp slurp with such a look of determination in his eyes (and then of course he puked everywhere as it was far too much for his little tum!)

LittlePebble · 19/11/2011 08:32

Morning all. Edward how was the film? Envy at you getting out to see it. Was it expressed milk or formula? Going to try expressing this morning for the first time...

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 19/11/2011 09:04

It was expressed! But if u have trouble expressing my original idea (before buying a pump) was to go to a cinema in a shopping centre, feed before going in and mum walks round shops with pram and calls if she needs me.

It was excellent (even hubby liked it) I would say best one yet, acting was much better than previous ones too, and both Edward and jacob were looking GOOD! I was almost drooling. Although a few critics have said there's not enough explanation of the plot (think they are relying on people having read the book)
If/when u go though don't leave till after the credits a there's a wee extra bit that most people in cinema missed.

I can't wait to see it again, but fear that really would make me a terrible mother lol

BB3 · 19/11/2011 09:09

I'm going to see it on Wednesday for my birthday! I can't wait!!!!

BB3 · 19/11/2011 09:16

I have a poorly little boy with temperature and sickness, right now we are cuddling skin to skin after he threw up all over himself and me so looks like a day snuggling on sofa! Smile

LittlePebble · 19/11/2011 09:42

Oh bb3 my birthday is Thursday Grin. Hope DS gets better. I am currently attached to breast pump and DP has been very excited about milk coming out and recorded it on my iPhone to show me Hmm he's excited as if my boobs are a new gadget! On plus side have managed 60ml in fifteen minutes is that good?

BB3 · 19/11/2011 09:59

So we're almost birthday buddies! What's that in oz's?

PenguinArmy · 19/11/2011 10:08

2oz

Only a few more hours of ILs to go

OP posts:
PenguinArmy · 19/11/2011 10:15

tally I feel the same here, feeding gives him horrible wind so at night I feel like I'm poisoning him

babies can overfeed on bottle, it's quicker and just to comfort suck mans they take in milk. They don't feed just for food so that's a why a baby left can down loads. Also some carers resort straight to fod i.e. you don't have leave 10ozs to go out for 3/4 hours. Although if it's there and a one off, why not? Just I remember some people getting themselves really stressed about having the express shed loads of milk for some longish event. Saying that I expressed 100 oz in the two weeks before I went back to work Blush didn't even use it for 6 months Grin

OP posts:
LittlePebble · 19/11/2011 10:15

It's one little pot. Do I need to do more for one feed? (Blush at how little I know).

Haven't even thought about my birthday it seems so unimportant now I have Eli.... And I've always loved my birthdays!

PenguinArmy · 19/11/2011 10:16

3-4 oz (90-120ml) is normally a good amount to leave for a feed, it's normal to need to express twice for one bottle feed.

OP posts:
LittlePebble · 19/11/2011 10:17

Thanks again penguin what would I do without you! Wink

BB3 · 19/11/2011 10:41

Ayse takes about 4 oz, ede about 7 (but they are that little bit older and ede goes longer between feeds.

Birthdays are strange things post kids. In 30 next year and I always expected it to be a big deal but now I'm not bothered. Ds being 5 in a few years however freaks me out completely x Wink

PenguinArmy · 19/11/2011 11:34

mind you DD would often drink what ever was available. We took the tactic of smaller bottles and then offering more if she still seemed hungry, however this was once I was back at work and expressed milk was a logistical operation.

If she went say 5 hours between feeds then I would have offered DD 6oz, but she was a 2 hourly feeder.

Hello all!
Have not been on here since I announced the birth of Matilda on 30th Oct. Just haven't found the time - have caught up a tiny bit - will read more tomorrow, as it looks as if you are experiencing all the same things that I am, the same worries/concerns etc.
But just a quick question for now:

Can anyone recommend a nursing pillow?
I'm finding that the maternity/nursing pillow I bought from Mothercare is too soft and too low down, my back is bent over constantly unless I hold Matilda up which makes my arms ache!
I found the Widgey nursing pillow:
www.amazon.co.uk/Widgey-Nursing-Pillow-Cow-Print/dp/B000NCAFOQ
which looks quite good, but, as usual, there are just so many out there that I'm confused! I need one that comes quite high up on my waist so I don't have to bend over...
Can't find a section on MN reviewing all the diff ones.
Thanks :)

Hope you are all well. As I say, I'll catch up properly tomorrow. :)

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 19/11/2011 18:39

My nursing pillow is also quite soft but I put one of my own pillows or a couch cushion under it to prop it up. HTH
