Tonight I tried feeding Ethan upstairs he fell asleep on the boob (as always) so I walked over to cot but as soon as I put him down he woke up (as always unless it's 10pm or later) so I tried leaving him there to see if he would settle but no he starts crying! So we are back down stairs again for the evening. I just don't know what to do I wish I could put him to bed at a decent time say 7-8, instead of having him on me all evening until he eventually sleeps at 8-10 anyone have any ideas.

Purplefan · 22/07/2011 21:28

Pamela Glad you had a great night sleep.... fingers crossed that this continues for you.

Me23 Have you tried warming Ethan's cot/crib with a hot water bottle before settling him down? He is obviously lovely warm and snug on the boob and then perhaps it is the cool surface that is waking him as you put him down.

pettyprudence · 22/07/2011 21:31

me is he crying or shouting? Arthur has dropped the self-settling and now shouts when I put him down to sleep but I either sit next to his cot (like tonight) and he drops off in 5-10 mins. Other nights (last night) I stroke his head or body and try and sooth/calm him and it can take 20-30 mins (Thank god for smart phones to pass the time). I have given up putting him down asleep because as soon as his bum hits the cot it wakes him.

I despair if his shouting does turn to crying because then I do lift him out of the cot for cuddles but it puts us back to square one for getting him to sleep.

I do use a dummy but he spits it out as soon as he is asleep (I watched him pick it out with his fingers when he was napping in his pram in John Lewis today. He seemed to take such care to put it aside!) and thankfully doesn't wake up for it (yet, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it)

I'm off to list my prams on gumtree/Netmums now as today I bought a 2nd hand bugaboo bee - I am chuffed to bits with it and think I have finally found the pram that meets my needs (almost, it could do with folding a bit smaller to fit my boot better but I give up)

pettyprudence · 22/07/2011 21:32

ps, any other bf-ers find they keep having to buy new bras? My boobs and under bust keep shrinking. Breast feeding is costing me a fortune!

Lozario · 22/07/2011 21:54

me we did some PUPD and shush/pat with Lara. Had to really as she took over half an hour to rock to sleep each time and with a toddler running around downstairs I just couldn't keep rocking her! It has worked to the extent that if you put her down at the right time, she'll suck her fingers to go off to sleep nicely, but she doesn't always show obvious sleep signals so if she cries rather than grumbles I usually feed her to sleep. (anyone else find it tricky spotting sleep signals? I was hopeless with DS too!!) Have you tried a swaddle? White noise/musical lullaby, putting him down earlier so not over-tired?

bras all mine are grim now, I don't think they really fit but I'm too tight to buy any more til I stop BF!

Sooo tired, DS in proper terrible twos now. shudders

cherub59 · 22/07/2011 22:18

me have you tried feeding him in a gro bag then putting him down in that? That way there is no change in the snuggliness?

Starting potty training ds2 tomorrow. Got the great pants buying expedition in the morning. Ds1 has decreed they both need peppa pig pants so it is off to m&s who better have their sizes on or it'll be tantrum time!!!

House has strategically placed potties at the ready!!!!

haloflo · 23/07/2011 08:28

Hi all. Well i'm still in the no sleep club but the last 2 nights were because of jabs on Thursday. Hannah was so tired and grizzly after them & it lasted all day yesterday too. All smiles this morning so hopefully back to normal. Also she can self settle if she wants Grin She has now done it 4 times I think so not a conincidence. At 5.40am this this morning I could not face getting up. Next thing I know its 7.40am and we had a lie in! I did feel awful when I realised she'd slept without a blanket and in a dirty nappy but she can't have cried or i'd have woken up i'm sure.

We still feed to sleep early evening but I am reluctant to wake a sleeping baby to prove a point. I rock to sleep for naps and usually wake her when I put her down. Often she goes back to sleep though by sucking on her dummy. She doesn't spit it out for naps but does at night. Very strange I think.

lozario I can spot tired signals but still haven't figured out the best time to act on them so I don't feel much better about getting her to nap at the right time.

petty I wish - it would mean I was losing weight! My bras are less than pristine now. I did get a one bravado silk one though and its a "large" and meant to fit a few sizes. At £26 a pop it wasn't cheap but it might save you money in the long run? Glad you have found a pram. Envy of the bugaboo.

me23 I've not tried this but could you move his cot bedtime forward slowly? 5/10 minutes a day until you get to 7/8pm?

cherub Good luck with potty training. Are you staying in for a week to get it cracked or just hoping you have no outdoor accidents?

Am I right in thinking cheese and sam are in Spain now and mixedmama in Turkey? I hope you all have lovely holidays ladies!

Cheeseandbiscuits · 23/07/2011 10:12

Just about to head to gatwick. We've got far too much stuff!Grin. Can't wait to take Isobel in the seaSmile

Have a good week all
J

cherub59 · 23/07/2011 13:07

So the great pants expedition....and m&s no longer do peppa pig pants for boys!!!! Managed to find fire engine pants that made ds2 very happy and he is running around the house very happily in his big boy pants!!!!

7th wedding anniversary today!!! Am starting to feel old!!! Have a lovely dh and we are going for dinner tonight with bff and her dh who are over from oz. She was my bridesmaid so quite appropriate!!!! Just hope ollie plays ball and I don't have to come home and feed/settle him half way thru dinner!

Still not really taken a bottle but got the breastflow bottle as mentioned by someone earlier in the thread and at first attempt yesterday was happily putting it in his mouth and playing with it though didn't really drink. Big step on from tommee tippee where he screamed at it touching his mouth!!!

1Catherine1 · 23/07/2011 21:24

Congratulations Cherub

Purplefan - am glad I'm not the only one struggling to get LO on bottle for return to work this week. Anya is only 17 and half weeks old and I've resorted to food. Been told from HV that she isn't ready for solids but the HV hasn't seen how she reacts when I'm eating. She's my DD and if I think shes ready then I know her best! She's had 2 teaspoons of "solid" food for the last 2 days and she LOVES it. So cute to see her holding her spoon and putting it in her mouth.

had more to type but Anya is telling me off - I wish she would go to sleep already!!!!!

Muser · 24/07/2011 12:08

So many people going on holiday, lucky things!

No holidays here, hoping to sell our flat soon and move somewhere bigger, so having to save our pennies. Definitely think we'll need more space soon. I have a baby who can scoot backwards very speedily! I know crawling is a long way off, but it's coming.

Hope everyone starts getting more sleep soon.

Purplefan · 24/07/2011 13:47

Catherine Good for you.... you do know Anya best! I haven't even mentioned food to my Hv, just got on with it!!! To be honest Bethan isn't really ready because she is not interested in holding the spoon or anything, however...she does seem to enjoy lapping at the food on the spoon and smiles throughout the feed! I just did it because of the return to work!!! Might mention it in hindsight next time I'm at clinic!! Wink

DD1 Georgina is poorly at the mo..lots of vomit to clear up last night and bedding to wash/change!! She is sleeping on the sofa at the mo. Bless her, I do hope she is better later as I don't like it when they are ill and I am back to work 2moro!!!! Hmm

Jupiter118 · 24/07/2011 15:19

Hello on a sunny Sunday pm.

catherine good for you if she is ready. E has no interest in food just yet so hoping to delay for a while. Goodluck to you and purple for work!

muser Shock at a moving baby - how did that happen. She might crawl soon you never know. DS did at just over 6 months.

halo sounds like you are getting a bit more sleep - v pleased for you and also for pamela

me E constantly has hands in mouth and covered in dribble - yuck - getting through bibs at rapid rate. Have inherited some Skibz, but not competely convinced. Think I might need ones with a fleece backing to soak up the drool.

cherub well done on the potty training and hope your meal out was lovely!!

petty new pram sounds nice - hope it is your dream one.

On bras I had a couple of nightmares buying them when I was pregnant/feeding/expressing and bought one when boobs were empty which was a disaster and one because it was nice (H&M) even though I knew it wasn't really the right size. Anyway if either of them would be the right size you can happily have them (worn only once each and going to charity shop otherwise). White one is 36DD and H&M One (narrow blue stripes) 38E. Or any other takers?

My other ones are all too disgusting to go anywhere other than the bin.

lozario terrible twos - ouch - sympathies.

Right supposed to be clearing out shelves in spare bedroom so E can have her own room eventually. Blatently not supped to be on here Grin

x

hitchedhippo · 24/07/2011 19:16

Hello ladies, sorry I've not been on for a few days. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who's going backwards with night time sleeping. Am really exhausted just at the moment with Beth waking every 3 hours again for feeds.
Hoping we're coming out the other side of it and she is starting to take a little more solid food every tea time now.

My exciting news, I know one or two of you have already discovered, I am engaged! Wooh hoo! Grin

We have decided to have the wedding and have both our daughters christened at the end of the ceremony. So one big party afterwards! Date is already set- we're probably slightly mad, but the big day is middle of October this year. SO I have less than three months to organise a church wedding - wish me luck... Cheers everyone Wine

Lozario · 24/07/2011 19:29

WOW CONGRATULATIONS HIPPO!!!!!!!! Grin Was it a surprise proposal? I'm all for short engagements, ours was about 9 weeks I think! Didn't get married in church though just reg office so not quite as much to do!

pettyprudence · 24/07/2011 19:44

Congratulations Hippo, I had a short engagement too but reg office rather than church so a bit easier to organise (and only a wedding, not a wedding and 2 christenings!)

RE: bras, thank you for the offer Jupiter but my boobs have "shrunk" to 34J Blush. I was a 34H pre preg and 40L post preg/enngorged. I actually bought my new bras in a HH though because I'm hoping they'll keep going down a bit. Off to flog my old bras on ebay as they have had such little use.

I am chuffed to bits that I am about a stone lighter now than pre-preg, but it doesn't seem to have made much difference to clothes size Hmm. I think bf-ing suits me (I have made no effort to watch what i eat - currently chomping on a Biscuit) but i think I will have to be one of those women who bf's forever to keep the weight off Grin Hmm

Jupiter118 · 24/07/2011 19:57

hippo congratulations what fabulous news!!!!! Congratulations and good luck with plans.

petty wow at boob size and well done on being stone lighter (I wish). I now weigh what I did when I got preggers which was too much. However Rome not built in a day and have shed 9lb on WW so far so mustn't give up thoughts of thinness.

I have put sec things on eBay today always takes me an age.

Anyone else for the bras?

X

Muser · 24/07/2011 20:12

Many congratulations hippo! Lovely news.

Medee · 24/07/2011 21:29

Congratulations, Hippo!

me, the difference for bedtime came for us by setting a routine so she has a bath, massage (if in the mood), her medicine, change, into grobag, all in our room with dimmed lights and classical music. I then give her final feed and transfer her already asleep into the cot, or transfer and settle her with the dummy. Works most of the time, though has been a little hit or miss recently. Once it was established, starting bringing it forward, and we now start at 7pm.

I'm gutted that I have had to chuck our two bottles of defrosted EBM as she wasn't interested. Thankfully, she didn;t need them when with her gran/ dad, but they tried to give her them afterwards so they weren't wasted. I'm hoping it isn't a warning sign, as otherwise my rare forays out woudl have to stop.

Medee · 24/07/2011 21:30

I've got 5 bras since BFing, and not had to change size. Have 2 John Lewis ones, which were a bit tight earlier but comfier now, and 3 Bravado ones, so so comfy.

pettyprudence · 25/07/2011 08:38

checking in bleary eyed this morning as Arthur was "chatting" in his cot between 3am and 7am with the occassional nap inbetween. I tried to nap with ear plugs and pillow over my head but it was a lost cause! Bringing the move into his own room asap - where he can chat away all bloody night if he wants to!

pettyprudence · 25/07/2011 08:39

Oh he has also decided that bedtime is now 7pm (probably why he had so much energy at 3am!) and that naps now must be taken in his cot with the curtains closed with no noise - how did i get such an inflexible baby? He's like a little old man set in his ways already!

cherub59 · 25/07/2011 08:43

Congrats hippo

hitchedhippo · 25/07/2011 10:03

It wasnt really a surprise proposal Lozario - we've been talking about doing it for ever, its just I planned to get the girls Christened and wanted to sort it out before my best friend emigrates at the end of October, and we suddenly thought, while we're at it - lets get married at the same time! Vicar agreed so there we have it. Shouldnt have too much trouble, as it will be fairly low key and very low budget - back to pub function room for buffet and disco, no sit down meal planned and no honeymoon! (maybe next year...)

Why are so many of us having trouble getting bubs to sleep through the night?! I am certain DD1 slept through more or less reliably from about 8-10 weeks. we are now 19 weeks and waking 2-3 times a night. Grrr.

Pameladej · 25/07/2011 12:03

Congratulations hippo!

wow at boob size petty! I've always been pretty flat chested and was a 32B before got preggers but since then my bra size has increased every time I've gone for a fitting so have lots of barely used bras in my drawer. Am now a 34F but weirdly don't feel I look much bigger than before.

Am about a stone heavier now than I was before pregnant and don't my think breastfeeding is going to shift it so need to start doing some exercise (have been saying that for ages but have offices urging about it yet)!
