So we don't scare the viroids on the antenatal thread with horror stories of no sleep, chomped boobs and endless laundry or make them envious with tales of cuteness....

There is a bizarre obsession with formula being a miracle for all your parenting woes.

I am shattered, but really enjoy breastfeeding. Not going to add formula top ups when ds is gaining weight steadily.

Our injections are closer to 8 weeks here. Will you have to go private Frak?

ConfessionsOfAWareFanjo · 29/09/2011 09:26

The thought of faffing about with bottles at anytime of the night just does my head in. So much easier to sit up, pick DD out of her moses basket, feed her then go back to sleep. Going for a wee should be the only reason for actually leaving the bed during any part of that (mind you I am spoilt in that DD has slept through most nights for a month now. She's 13 wks tomorrow)
Babies will sleep through when they are ready ff or bf.

vallinnapod · 29/09/2011 09:50

I love l how everyone has an opinion on what to do with someone else's baby...my fave so far was a quote my DH sent me: "Dear MIL, thanks for the advice on how to raise my child, however I married one of yours and let me tell you, there is room for improvement" Makes me Grin My FIL asked how long I was planning to BF for. A sort of eyebrow raise at 6 months...I think only because their other two grandkids were formula fed. I too really enjoy BF. Feel very lucky we have got it established as well as we have (in the end) I keep going to express but I just don't want him to have a bottle yet. Selfishly it's the one thing only I can do.

Esk because the borough in London I live in has over x% (can't remember what it is) incidents of TB they vaccinate newborns at 4 weeks with accordance to NICE guidelines. It makes me laugh at this criteria as I can travel through several London boroughs on one bus journey! As long as it keeps DS safe from nasty diseases then I am OK with it. Especially as he has proven himself such a brave poppet! We have all the 'normal' ones at 8 weeks etc too. I had my BCG at 13 which was the norm then!

Still not moved. I reckon 3 weeks. House completely gutted! Thought I wouldn't want to see it in that state but I was really excited by it instead though. Builders haven't been in all week due to a funeral so a bit Hmm (I am not insensitive but did EVERY person have to go?!)

Eskarina · 29/09/2011 14:02

Val exciting about the house. But where have the builders gone for a funeral to take a week? Surely an afternoon would suffice?!
Do I remember right that you took DS to a cranial osteopath? What did you think? A friend recommended I take DD (and gave me a money off voucher) as when she saw dd's hysterics she said it was just like her daughter was with colic and the C.O. really helped. Have booked it for next tues, bet DH is not going to be impressed...

cowboylover · 29/09/2011 22:21

I agree no kipper required! Intact I would like those purple furry arms from that soup advert IIRC!

I now have now got used to politely (sometimes!) telling DH what I want done as it's easier because I would wait forever for him to guess!

Mumming defo brings out the advise from every idiot and there mother! Everything from I should put her in her own bedroom and close the door for 12 hours ignoring her how ever much she cries or she will never sleep to breastfeeding is not a suitable food as no way can she fill up enough now she's 4 months Angry

I think we are all doing just fab!

Baby2b · 30/09/2011 03:41

Thanks Cowboy. I can be quite fiery, so good to check I'm not being irrational. Smile

I should get the keys to my new place tomorrow and be moving within 4 weeks. Very excited to finally own a place. Two of us moving should make the thread interesting GrinWink

Eskarina · 30/09/2011 05:28

Quite right that the sight of a baby makes some people come out with I'll-thought-out comments which can be downright hurtful. I've had ppl look into my buggy and say to DD "aww you don't need that thing (dummy). Well actually, if she's taken it then she probably does. The dummy is not something I've given her lightly, it was a huge decision for me, so thanks random stranger, now I feel crap!
I also had a leader of one of the groups we tried out tell me it's not right that DD cries as much as she does (pretty much all the time she's awake), which actually I do know but then it was "are you feeding her enough? Are you sure? Perhaps you should feed her now..." she really made me feel useless.

Slightly more positively, we go to a women's study group at church and they saw yesterday just how bad DD is. One later rang me offering to come over for an hour a couple of mornings a week to hold DD so I can eat breakfast/have a shower in peace. It's amazingly lovely of her. I'm stubborn though and part of me takes it as others thinking I'm not coping. Too independent for my own good...and it's ridiculously important to me that everyone else sees everything as being absolutely fine. But neither my parents nor ILs are close enough to help so I don't get any break from DD until DH comes home at night. Think I'll say yes. Would be mad not to...

Baby2b · 30/09/2011 06:50

Oh Esk, you should definitely accept. I am sure you are doing everything you can. Some babies are more likely to cry than others, doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong. Do you have the option of the weekly nhs babies group? I weigh son at it every week, bombard the health visitor with questions and have a good chat with other mums. Always makes things seem better.

cowboylover · 30/09/2011 09:46

Baby2 I am a natural red head and live up to all the stereotypes!

Esk I agree take a break if you can, that is a lovely offer.

Fingers crossed that there will be 3 of us moving soon as we think we have seen 'the' house for us so need to double check our numbers before we make an offer but it's very exciting Grin

Baby2b · 30/09/2011 14:25

I love the sunshine Grin

ConfessionsOfAWareFanjo · 30/09/2011 20:32

I was told to give DD a dummy the other day! Just because she was crying. By a checkout operator who had no idea. 2 minutes later outside, DD in sling and fast asleep, problem sorted! Not bagging out people who give a pacifier, bagging out unhelpful stranger who did bother to find out why DD was screaming the shop down (over tired and not wanting to sleep in pushchair or Daddy's arms, but I can't put things in and out of supermarket trolley with sling on, so she had to wait. Sorry she's crying, but I know she will be fine just as soon as we get outside, so can your charity lady please stop badly packing my shopping and talking rubbish with you so I can pay and leave. Smile sweetly)

Take the help Esk. There is nothing wrong with asking for help. This is a lesson I've had to learn recently and I'm so pleased I did or I would be in a corner rocking about now. Your friend sounds absolutely lovely by the way.

Good luck with all the house moves. I don't envy you in the least.

CuriosityCola · 30/09/2011 21:59

New name for baby2b Grin

Coaf, how cheeky...people just don't think do they?

Hope everyone has a nice weekend. From the forecast everywhere but Scotland is having a scorcher tomorrow...typical Smile

vallinnapod · 01/10/2011 13:07

Nice name change CC!

Thankfully I have avoided and real 'advice'. The highlight was our not-very-English-speaking builder managing to perfectly tell me my 4 day old should be wearing a hat on a scorching day Hmm

We are loving the sunshine here in the south Grin It's so nice being able to have the baby in just a vest kicking around in his pram. I thought he would be nearly one before that happened.

vallinnapod · 01/10/2011 14:16

Forgot to say, good luck with the moving and offers!

ConfessionsOfAWareFanjo · 01/10/2011 21:47

Envy at hot weather and babies in only a vest. DD had short sleeves on out today and I felt very bad as I think it was a bit cold for her (though she had tights on and was in the sling).

Like the new name CC. Though I suddenly find myself fancying a glass of coke Hmm.

vallinnapod · 01/10/2011 22:14

Not aiming to make any of you Scottish lassies jealous but gawd it was hot today. Just had DS in the buff on the bed with us and a fan. Took 'precautions' he was on a towel on the changing mat but he still managed to wee all over the bed and DH 5 times in about 30 mins! At least it put my mind at rest he had been drinking enough!! It has been so hot feeding him has been a bit wriggly for the both of us. He is now in his crib in only his nappy, could do with vest on but I didn't want to ruin the full drowsy moment before I put him down. Blush

Been at the outlaws all day which was really nice but leaves me a bit 'gimme my baby back' IYSWIM. Just lots of people wanting cuddles, which i totally understand. I get home and my mum comes up to our room, picks DS up and says she'll take him downstairs while we eat....err, nothing prompted this. She literally walked in and swooped. Walk off saying she'd bring him back if he was hungry Shock She never does this, she lets him chew on his fists whilst making 'light' of the situation. Could have screamed. He gets so hot being held any way and was chilling on his playmat. Managed a controlled implosion of Angry to DH, who was ready to lynch her. Cue her reappearing 10 mins later with DS, hot, hungry and grumpy...no shit sherlock. Could have told you that would happen...grrr, rant over.

CuriosityCola · 01/10/2011 23:57

Just discovered this drink...it tastes like cola bottle sweets...yum!

Today's weather has been really overcast, but still really warm. Yesterday I returned from the park to find my flat was 27degrees. Had to sleep with balcony door wide open and couldn't get the place cooler than 25degrees. Was lovely letting ds kick on his mat in the park though. Some more warm days would be lovely.

Also visited inlaws and extended family today, so know how you feel. They pick ds up for a cuddle even when he is fast asleep... Cue 'aw look, he is awake'.Angry Plus niece thinks he is a toy. Can you tell I have had a good rant to dh?! Grin He always comes away tired and overhandled.

Also, have funny breastfeeding story. Don't want to out myself so will keep it vague. Was at a school fete and ds started making hunger signs. I was just going to sit in corner and feed him...feeling more confident about discreet feeding. Oh no, mil insists I need my privacy and gets an office unlocked for me to sit in. Confused Felt like a right numpty, but couldn't stop myself from giggling at how prudish she was.

Coaf, how many layers do you normally put on dd when using the sling? The ergo is really good, but the insert is very warm. Worried about people judging ds being without coat etc...

Right, I had better get some sleep before the next feed.

fraktious · 02/10/2011 02:35

I know we're hot here but I count the sling as a layer of clothing so DS often goes in it in just a nappy. When it was cooler we did sling plus body and babylegs.

On the BF stories, I had a funny moment with BIL yesterday who was chatting away to me when all of a sudden he went "oh my god, just realised what you are doing" (feeding DS) and promptly left the room Grin

Eskarina · 02/10/2011 09:29

Grin at BF stories. I have the opposite problem with my DH who is v pro BF and of the opinion that I am doing womankind a service if I feed in public. I'm usually fairly chilled about it but there are some places where it doesnt feel right and he doesn't get it.

Sorry for all the IL difficulties. We have the ILs coming today but they're usually well behaved to the point of not doing things/visiting much, presumably in case we think they're taking over or something. They don't live far away but this will only be the 2nd time they've seen DD - she's 5 weeks old! If my parents lived where they do and not at the other end of the country they'd be here every day or two. Probably a good thing each set of parents live where they do!

CuriosityCola · 02/10/2011 21:16

Any suggestions for colic like symptoms from a sleep deprived mum. Ds has been screaming with tears and getting himself in a right lather. Also, do you think your diet impacts on them...keep reading conflicting advice. Sad

Eskarina · 03/10/2011 08:23

Keep him as upright as possible, in a sling or over your shoulder - DD spe

Eskarina · 03/10/2011 08:33

Sorry..
DD spends hours over my shoulder. Try lifting legs up to chest and/or bicycling them gently.
I've no idea if our diet affects them, as also keep reading conflicting advice. One of my friends cut out al dairy, eggs, nuts and a whole host of other stuff for both of hers and found it made a difference. But there are severe allergies in the family and the older child has continued with allergies into childhood, so there was more going on there than colic.

Do you all feed from 1 breast or 2 at each feed? DD is inconsistent. In the morning she'll have both sides but later in the day she might only take 1. But have been reading the baby whisperer book, and she is adamant that baby should only have 1 side at a feed so that they get the hind milk. But DD always does empty 1 before starting the other...so confusing

MightilyOats · 03/10/2011 10:48

I went to a la leche league breastfeeding class last week Esk and the leader said that the foremilk/hindmilk thing is basically a load of bollocks... the more watery stuff is still full of protein etc, its just that the fat cells, which are larger, are a bit behind them as it takes a while to push them through - its basically the same stuff. She said to always offer both breasts at a feed and the original research that suggested the foremilk/hindmilk was basically a) based on cows and b) based on a study of 4 babies... Hmm

ConfessionsOfAWareFanjo · 03/10/2011 10:51

Esk, ditch the baby whisperer and follow your DD's lead. As long as she is emptying the first side, it's absolutely fine for her to have the otherside. Just wait til she starts taking 3 sides! (this is generally growth spurt behavior)

Can't help with colic advise sorry.
