So we don't scare the viroids on the antenatal thread with horror stories of no sleep, chomped boobs and endless laundry or make them envious with tales of cuteness....

esk we BLWd from 23 weeks so if she can hold very ripe melon/banana/steamed carrot try it.

val time out and exercise will do you the world of good. BFing is a huge investment of time energy and effort and we just don't live in a society where it's valued and other people will pick up the slack. It's no wonder so many people supplement with formula and we are fortunate enough to be in a world where we can get safe, nutritious alternative to BM.

The wonder weeks is a bloody amazing book - the app is good too but the book is really amazing. 14-20 was HARD, made worse by going back to work half way through, and noone really prepared you for that. It's all about how tough the first few weeks are and then it's supposed to be a doddle!

vallinnapod · 15/01/2012 10:26

Oh, will download the WW app now!

Thanks for the lovely words of encouragement and concern. 99.9% sure this is nothing more than sleep deprivation and a bit of a pity party Smile Also I tend to rant more than gush! We are having some lovely times too.

DS woke every 2 hours last night struggling with constipation poor poppet (and big guilt trip as it will be his little tum processing formula)

Am in the process of packing - eek! I have a teeny tiny suitcase (the size that could be hand baggage). DS has a huge bag! In fairness half will be the collapsed carrycot for his stroller but still...teeny bub, huge bag!

Esk - weaning sounds great fun. We are going to start towards the end of the month if DS remains keen :)

OhFraktiousTree · 15/01/2012 10:34

This will make me sound very crunchy but if he's waking and uncomfy and you want to continue BFing I would really advise safe cosleeping. There's a body if scientific evidence which says that even if daytime feeds drop, nighttime feeds up to 1 year can maintain a BFing relationship, give mothers better quality sleep and result in a more relaxed baby.

vallinnapod · 15/01/2012 13:00

I am just a bit worried I sleep too heavily now with him in bed - bit complacent about his presence which was why I started moving him back to his cot after night feeds.

That said, we go away in 2 nights and then we will have a big bed to ourselves so will more than likely co sleep for feeding ease and to help reassure him in the new environment.

OhFraktiousTree · 15/01/2012 13:20

If you are BFing you don't pass into the 4th stage of deep sleep so you're unlikely to sleep to heavily. Plus your body won't let you get complacent - in one study of observed bed sharing the mothers slept about 20cm apart from the baby no matter what position the baby took and not once did they see the mother roll onto the baby, whether they were habitual bedsharers or not.

You will honestly feel less tired for it and he may well sleep better.

vallinnapod · 15/01/2012 16:30

Thanks, def giving it a go :)

CuriosityCola · 16/01/2012 07:02

Has everyone had a decent weekend? I have decided I like Monday mornings as everyone is else is up early too Grin

For mixed feeding there is a little bit of advice in 'food of love'. It is against top up feeds and recommends introducing one bottle at a set time.

Still doing expressed bottle at 7pm here. I think it has saved my sanity as ds is sleeping until around half ten. I then co-sleep the rest of the night.

vallinnapod · 16/01/2012 08:30

Well, not up so early here. DS may be a pain in the arse at waking up at the mo but he still only 'gets up' around now. I have to say no matter how crappy our night's have been, I am always greeted with the most adorable smiles!

We co-slept most of last night bd it was a big sanity saver. Although DH put him in his cot at 11:30 ish Hmm. Clearly I was too tired to protest.

vallinnapod · 16/01/2012 08:33

Was meant to say, our FF has been a 'stand alone'. The first 2 were last thing but I then decided I prefer, and I think DS does too, to have a snuggly BF before bed so I moves it to 5 ish yesterday. TBH not sure what he really makes of it. I express just afterwards and am getting a nice freezer stash back so may well substitute for a bottle of expressed.

nickelhasababy · 16/01/2012 13:43

Hello all!
This thread dropped off my active convos, and I've been in such a bubble that I didn't even notice! Shock
I've even been on the Grads thread before this one...
Which means that although i've been JMing for exactly 5 weeks now, I haven't checked in at all. Blush
I think we're getting okay with it all now - haven't done any housework apart from laundry since the birth - thought about getting out the hoover but didn't have time. (and DH does the pots)
We've not been cocooned, though, we've been to church several times, done a couple of visits to family, and have even started at work. I haven't actually done much work though! (thankfully, it's january so very very quiet in the shop, but customers seem to flood in at the inconvenient moment - you know, when DD is just mithering for a feed, then in come customers, so I end up having to let her scream because customers don't seem to realise that the phrase "see to DD first then I'll ask my question" is the best way to get her to stop crying. Hmm (I'm okay if she's already latched on and feeding if they come in, it's just when they come in and then she wants food I can't do yet))
I've had a few explosive poos, two of which involved me having to change my skirt! Shock
In the main, she's okay, but she needs me most when I need to work.
And I'm being very clumsy around the shop - her pram is in my bit of shop, behind the desk, and I can't seem to get round it without slamming into things. I'm really cold, too, and that doesn't help my coordination.
This morning, I needed food, but I had to do a customer order and feed DD twice. well, i went for a wee, fed DD. Still hadn't eaten.i did the order, that which I had, then I needed to do the order - stumbling around and over furniture etc. DD was crying, so I put her on the chair while I sorted out the envelope. Bad plan.
She fell off the chair and got wedged between it and the wall. Which she didn't actually notice till I pulled her out feet first (it was all i could reach) and managed to whack her head on my arm as I pulled her out Blush:( Then she wouldn't stop wailing (mainly shock I think), so I had to feed her again to calm her down. I still hadn't eaten, so was feeling rather faint.
I've managed to eat something now, but I feel really woozy cos of the delay.

On more positive notes - bought these from ebay shop on Saturday,
here, they were posted saturday afternoon (2nd class) and arrived today!
Brill service.
So we're going to try them out when I do the next nappy change. Grin

OhFraktiousTree · 16/01/2012 15:02

Oh gosh nickel you have been busy! Do you have a sling? A stretchy wrap sounds like it would be a godsend for you. Sad about DD getting wedged but you're both okay now. You absolutely must eat though! It's not optional Wink

nickelhasababy · 16/01/2012 15:18

I've got a carrier, but i can't put it on on my own!
must practise that.....

FeijoaVodkaPlease · 16/01/2012 16:40

Glad to hear my suggestion doesn't sound needed Val. It was intended as a last resort, but I'm not one to dither about MH issues. Smiles first thing ion the morning are the best.

Good to see you Nickel You need to keep a stash of muesli bars and fruit etc behind your desk for those times you need food in a hurry (voice of experience here, random crying in public in front of extended family is no fun...!).

Frak every time you describe yourself as crunchy, I think of cornflakes Grin

I've been doing a spot of baby proofing this weekend. DD can no longer (potentially) crack her head on the hearth, or climb in and play with the fake coal blocks, but daft me didn't measure the stair width so we have a gate, but it needs an extension piece. Doh!

nickelhasababy · 16/01/2012 16:47

oh, i've got food! I just didn't get round to eating it!
I had a yoghurt, and a muffin and a bag of crisps and a bag of "fruit and nuts"

OhFraktiousTree · 16/01/2012 17:36

nick Yep you need to learn! What kind is it? Maybe you could borrow something til you master it? Stretchy wraps are easy to tie after a couple of tries and you just pop the baby in rather than trying to manoeuvre unsecured baby and unsecured carrier! Plus once you get it down pat you can BF in it And food is not optional!

fvp I am bad and have not baby proofed Blush I am a little bit nuts and go soggy if left in liquid for too long so cornflakes not a bad comparison Wink

vallinnapod · 16/01/2012 21:25

Grin at the poos Nickel Ds has been really constipated and hasn't pooed for over a week. We get on a plane for 13 hours tomorrow morning. You can see where this one may be heading...I have two changes of clothes, for him. Not enough room for me....eek!

Its scary when they roll into silly positions isn't it? I was mortified when I clouted DS's head on to a table in starbucks when he was about 5 weeks old. I was trying to feed him at the time and he was bobble heading my boob. I cried, he didn't!!

vallinnapod · 16/01/2012 22:05

BTW downloaded the WW app, there is an awful lot of black cloud Confused

FeijoaVodkaPlease · 17/01/2012 09:22

Frak, we never baby proofed when it was just one baby, but now we have a boisterous almost 4 year old who doesn't realise he's come awfully close to smacking DD's head on the hearth a couple of times while playing rolling games with her. ]

nickelhasababy · 17/01/2012 10:27

I don't know what type it is....
it says porte bebe on the label.
It's not a sling, it's more like a baby rucksack! The straps criss-cross at the back, but it needs something to wrap around the waist, too, because it rides up.

nickelhasababy · 17/01/2012 10:28

Grin vallinna - lots of big poo to come then!

OhFraktiousTree · 17/01/2012 11:41

Mmmmm no idea so can't give you any tips. Does it look like a baby bjorn? Back carries are quite tricky.

nickelhasababy · 17/01/2012 11:49

it does carry the baby on my front, it's just the straps round the back.
tempted to make a waist strap for it.
actually, I don't know why i'm even bothering with it - I've got a pattern to make something similar, but that has D rings and straps that cross around the waist as well. (that'll be me having to get round to making it though Hmm ....)

nickelhasababy · 17/01/2012 11:50

yes, it is a bit like the baby bjorn, but no waist strap

CuriosityCola · 18/01/2012 09:21

Val, hope the flight was a success and not the mother of all poo explosions Grin

FeijoaVodkaPlease · 18/01/2012 10:59

Nickel I have a baby bjorn that a friend was no longer using. It is one of the ones that doesn't have a waist strap. We didn't use it much as it really hurts the back after too long. DD is still within the weight limit for it, but she's just to heavy, so it's sitting in the cupboard now. I'm now waiting for the next free insertion weekend on ebay to try and raise some funds for a good carrier (got my eye on a baby or toddlerhawk). I have heard good things about the moby for while babies are wee and they are a lot cheaper than some on the market and it would allow you to feed too.
