Hi all,

I have not had time to read everything, but I am stunned to find talk of teeth and weaning. My little guy is barely holding his head up on his own. Can't imagine him with teeth. Poor boobies...

Even though dh is out of town I have found plenty to do to keep busy. Max still won't sleep at home during the day so we have been taking long walks so that he can sleep in his pram. Hope to get him used to sleeping during the day this way and then switch him from the pram to his cot.

Hello Smiling. I'm new too. This thread is really welcoming and nice, as I'm sure you've noticed. Max has cradle cap, I think. The skin on his head is all dry and flaky. I started bathing him with Kiehls foam baby wash and using their baby cream right after his bath (I even rub some on his dry head). It seems to have helped a lot. I think their are Kiehls stores over there.

Cabe - It isn't just you. I am weird about leaving Max too. The longest I have been away from him is an hour and I felt nervous the whole time. I need to get over it though.

Hope all is well.

Cabe · 22/11/2005 05:10

It's not Conrad that doesn't sleep at night... It's ME!

Can't sleep at all tonight, have just finished a vile pile of ironing (phew) and just about to express these huge boobies then I'm going to try to sleep again 'til morning comes properly!

Jess - I'm glad it's not me being weird... it's just that I remember being so blase about leaving Noop when she was little... I think I've become more aware of how precious they are now I'm older.

Nighty Morning! x

Hi everyone

My dd1 didn't get her first tooth until 15 months!! So, I am not sure what to expect with Alice. But DH and I are never going to utter the words "she must be teething...." ever again or until we see evidence of her first tooth poking through.

Happy belated to birthday to Nandy... and happy birthday to PC's ds today. I know that because it is dd1's birthday today. She is 3.

And she has diarrhoea Nice! So she won't be going to Pre-school today and I won't have an extra chance to do any baking or get the house straightened before some family turn up this afternoon. She's having a proper party (for friends) on Saturday. It is mostly people from my antenatal class and post-natal group from 3 years ago.

Alice continues to do well. She was a bit slow to go down to sleep last night - took from 10:30pm to 11:30pm but then she slept through until 7:30..... of course, I was up at 6am with dd1 so didn't feel the full benefit.

KK - I haven't forgotten your email, just haven't yet had a chance to sit down and reply - because I can never write short emails

Redhelen · 22/11/2005 09:12

Morning

Cabe - I was fine leaving dd with mil -got to the wedding mingling with guests happily, until someone said - "Hows Rachel?" and I suddenly wanted to cry! Scar is healing again - so yes hope this is the last of it playing up! Going to Spain for 5 days.

ds got first tooth at 11 months - would be surprised it dd comes early - but she certainly dribbles alot!

Better go and sort stuff for the trip!

PiccadillyCircus · 22/11/2005 09:12

Happy birthday beatie's DD1 and my DS .

Alice is snotty again (as is DS and DH). Poor baby (and poor me as it has made her more wakeful).

Will try and catch up more later on

jessyandabbysmummy · 22/11/2005 10:01

PC and Beatie - happy birthday to your not so little ones!
G;ad weekend went well, cabe and noop (frantically trying to work out anagram of your ds' name!!) is maturte enough not to let silly girl's squbbling to spoil her day.
PC - Abigail is snotty too so I'm with you on the wakefulness thing!
She's aso very spotty - not so obvious from a distance but her cheeks and forehead are covered in tiny spots. they're not white or pussy or anything. Is this a milk rash or baby acne or something? DD1 had (and still has) perfect skin so it's a new one for me. Useless HV is coming for a visit on thurs so will ask her though not confident that she will be any help.
I have been ok leaving Abigail, though except for my night out with the girls last week (left dh in charge) it's mostly just been while i've popped out to the shops. Might be different this thurs when we're both out at Little Britain, leaving DM with DDs.
Glad you enjoyed db's wedding and have a fab time in spain, RH.
TEETH????WEANING???? nooooooooooo! They're far too small...time's going too quickly.
Off to open a bank account for Abigail today and finally sort out dd1's child trust fund account with the voucher that's been floating around for nearly a year!
Have a good day all!

jaydeelady · 22/11/2005 12:54

Hi all, just been reading the messages re weaning. I work for the SALT dept, and the government recommendations are sending everyone loopy !!! Weaning as late as 6 months makes tongue and mouth muscles weak. Babies need to learn to use their mouths to promote good speech and movement. There lesson over . my ds is now 12 and he was weaned at 13 weeks and it was the best thing i did, he started sleeping 6 til 6 almost straight away , my other girls were different though, dd1 was at about 4 and half months and dd2 was different again cos of her disabilities. don't know what i'll do this time but i'll get a rocket up my bum from work if i wait til 6 months!!!! had some terrible days ober the w/e but not too bad today. got a school governors meeting tonight and baby will NOT take a bottle of expressed milk! not sure what i'm going to do if i want any sort of life.!!!

milward · 22/11/2005 13:05

jaydeelady - this bf info from your work is rubbish!!! nhs, who & ubicef amongst others say bf exclusively for 6 months & then intro foods. This is the medically accepted info that is given by medical professionals in the uk.

The good news about bf is that promotes good jaw & mouth development - not the opposite as your work says. Just had to get this straight as there is lots of wrong bf info out there. The correct info is available on the nhs, govt bf sites & unicef so you can check it out.

Why not take your baby to the meeting & bf? I bf & take my ds with me. My bf relationship will not be compromised by others who are nothing to do with it.

beatie · 22/11/2005 13:30

jaydeelady ~ I had a teat recommended to me which has meant my dd takes a bottle of ebm with less fuss. It is a MAM Ulti-something. Ultivent I think. It is a flatter shape and the bit that goes in baby's mouth is a softer texture. It's great. It seems a much better fit for Alice who was gagging on regular rounded, harder teats. The other tip is to heat the ebm up a lot. For Alice, it has to be really warm.

PiccadillyCircus · 22/11/2005 13:41

beatie - what size of bottles do they fit? Feel I should/would like to make a bigger EBM effort

Holymoly321 · 22/11/2005 13:54

Oh my God! Weaning talk already!!! As a first time mum, I hadn't even thought about it - just getting used to having a baby around! There seems to be a lot of conficting advice here - when should I start thinking about weaning - and what are the signs that DS wants to start having some solids? Luca is only 8 weeks - should I be thinking about weaning him? I'm begining to feel faint!! Hi Jessinwa - I've bought some baby body / hair shampoo for sensitive skin from Boots today, so I'll give it a go and see what happens with Luca's cradle cap and dry skin. He's got a horrible horrible cold at the moment - any tips from anyone on what I can do to help the poor wee thing?

beatie · 22/11/2005 13:58

PC ~ the teats fit a wide neck bottle like avent or TT. I bought a MAM bottle too but the plastic is different and it took too long to heat the milk in a jug of boiling water so I use the teat on an Avent bottle.

Smiling ~ saline drops? Raise the head-end of the crib/cot/matress.... I think that's all you can do for a 2 month old with a cold. Once they're older you can guve Medised - a medicine with paracetamol and an antihistamine.

Holymoly321 · 22/11/2005 14:00

Thanks Beattie - I'll try those - fingers crossed it gives him some relief - heartbreaking watching him suffer .

jaydeelady · 22/11/2005 15:28

Well that told me!!! feel like i've had a real telling off now, thanks for making me feel so good!!
thanks for the advice about the teats beattie i'l try them but probably not tonight - left it a bit late to go hunting for them now, but thanks again.

jessyandabbysmummy · 22/11/2005 16:12

jaydeelady - my sister is a speech therapist and has never mentioned to me that bf would be detrimental to speech/jaw development. I fed dd1 exclusively til 5 months so she's either not heard the recommendations that you have or bit her tongue (pardon the pun) which would have been very unlike her. Anyway, recommendations seem to change with this as with every other issue. As long as you're comfortable with when to wean.
Did I mention that I'm doing a La Leche course? Don't think I did. Don't know how I roped myself into this one. Anyone else been involved with La Leche?
Smiling - if you don't have a humidifier, try soaking a towel and placing over the radiator to tyr and help Luca's cold. This is what I do and then add some olbas oil/karvol when they're a bit older (about 3 months). HTH

Holymoly321 · 22/11/2005 18:28

Thanks for the tip! Will def try the wet towel on the radiator tonight. Someone else also mentioned a humidifier to me today - how much do they go for? I've just given him some nasal drops too. Had Luca weighed today at HV's - he's now a stonking 13lbs!!! As there has beena lot of talk about weaning on this thread and I havent' got a clue about it all, I just mentioned it the the HV and she said that I shouldn't start weaning him until 6 months but to 'look for signs if he wants to start earlier' as he's quite a big baby. What are the signs???

beatie · 22/11/2005 20:51

Smiling - I looked at humidifiers in the Argos catalogue recentky and saw there was one made specially for nurseries. Can't remember the cost.

KiwiKate · 22/11/2005 21:01

Hi all. I'll catch up on the posts later.

After a week of feeding 2-hourly and being generally miserable, I tried some tooth-gel (bonjella) on Grace last night. She slept 6 and a half hours (her longest ever). I felt 4 sharp bits in her mouth - definately teething - but back teeth coming out rather than the "usual" front teeth. I had forgotten how they can yell everytime you put them down when they are teething (just think of when you have a toothache, how lying down makes it a zillion times worse).

ON the weaning front, I had planned to wean my first baby at 6 months, as the health professionals advise (esp as there are food allergies in our family). By 3 and a half months he was a nightmare - never settled, not sleeping, very miserable - I was convinced he was hungry. At 4 months I offered him some ripe mashed banana (expecting him to spit it out) and he at the WHOLE BANANA! After an initial taste he literally grabbed dh's hand (which was holding the spoon) and shoved it towards his mouth, while lurching his mouth towards the spoon - it reminded us of a cobra strike! I know that Unicef advises weaning at 6 months, but for ds 4 months was the right time (could probably have done a week or so earlier). He is now a very healthy and active 2.5yo with no allergies and has never had a major illness.

Smiling (Welcome!) if Luca is snotty, you can try a nasal aspirator (looks like a little tube, with a bulb on one end. Squeeze the bulb, then put the tube on the end of baby's nose, release the bulb, and the mucus gets sucked out - these are only 3 or 4 pounds at your local pharmacy. I think Tommy Tippee makes them as well as other brands)

Hope everyone is well.

Hello!

Didn't realize how much work getting organized to go away with little person(S) would take - havn't stoped all day! Didn't help when I found some of the clothes I wanted to take with me don't fit - so had to go shopping too!! Night night zzzzzzzzzzz

jessyandabbysmummy · 23/11/2005 09:17

Have a fab hol RH. hope scar behaves itself while you're away.
Abigail slept from 10 til 7 last night...hurrah!
DD1 woke at 3 and refused to go back to bed...booh! So am zombie again today.

jessyandabbysmummy · 23/11/2005 09:19

Oh and wheel has seized up on double buggy so limited on getting out and about...need brain wave on what to do!
Hope all ok. x

LadyLazarus · 23/11/2005 09:32

Morning all! I'm finding the weaning debate interesting... I think 6 months is quite late, I will just try with Elise when she seems to look like she wants mroe than the milk, but she's settled on it for now (but only 10 weeks!). Does the 6 month thing apply if you are bottle-feeding?

Elise has really bad cradle cap as well - have been making a paste with 1tsp bicard of soda + 1tsp water and leaving it on head for 5 mins, then shampoo off. Read it in a book and it does seem to get some of it off, although it just comes back of course. Looks very nasty tho

RH - have a fab holiday!

Redhelen · 23/11/2005 10:33

Morning - still busy getting ready! Had to pay travel insurance loading for c-section. Made me angry as I'm not ill - £10 I could have spent on tapas!

Rachel has cradle cap too - its a shame - dosn't seem to bother her though.

jaydeelady · 23/11/2005 10:35

morning all, i will talk to the girls at work and find out exactly what the score is re weaning etc. i only know that the feeding specialist in our dept was tearing out her hair at the recommendations. I've never been one to follow what any one says about my kids i do what i want and when i want. i was only trying to get involved in your conversations, not cause a riot

jessyandabbysmummy · 23/11/2005 12:08

Jaydeelady - no riot caused. Could you please let us know what your feeding advisor says? We need different input, if only so we can make an informed decision...and it's good to chat, too!!! Hope you're not upset.
